Dear Parents and Carers,
Last week, our Year 12 students came together, led by the dedicated teams of Mr Comensoli and Mr Garner for a truly special Spirituality Day. After the intensity of their trial exams, this day offered a much-needed opportunity to pause, reflect, and reconnect—not only with each other but with themselves. Through guided reflections, shared experiences, and moments of gratitude, students embraced the chance to celebrate how far they’ve come and acknowledge those who have supported them along the way. The day culminated in a vibrant and joy-filled Colour Run, where our Year 12s let loose, embraced their inner child, and had an absolute ball. Laughter echoed across the grounds as students—armed with colour and enthusiasm—ambushed none other than our amazing Principal, adding a playful and memorable touch to an already special day…at least I didn’t need to spend hours washing it out of my hair!

TRIVIA AND FRIENDLY COMPETITIONS
COLOUR RUN
As we continue to honour our Year 12 cohort, we’ve seen major works submitted across several HSC courses, showcasing the depth of talent and dedication within our community. The CAPA department hosted stunning Showcase Nights for Drama and Visual Arts, where creativity and expression took centre stage and students were able to test their performances with live audiences, a truly important component in getting them ‘match ready’ before the big day! Our Construction students, under the expert guidance of Mr Gibson, have been hard at work building concrete ramps to improve accessibility across our campus—an inspiring example of practical learning with a meaningful impact. In the world of Hospitality, our talented students, mentored by Mrs Chittick, Mrs Standen, and supported by Mrs Johnston, treated families and friends to a beautiful High Tea. From the impeccable service to the delicious food, the event was a testament to their skills, professionalism and the strong relationship between teachers and students in practical courses. As a fortunate attendee, I can personally attest—the experience was absolutely top shelf!

This week’s assembly was a moment of deep reflection and celebration, led by o MacKillop House Captains Mitchel and Rhianna, who honoured the life and mission of Mary MacKillop of the Cross and our House Value of Justice. In reflecting on her legacy, students were reminded of our two guiding wells: Excellence in Learning and Peaceful Relationships. While we strive for academic growth, we equally value the development of our students as compassionate, thoughtful human beings, living out the Gospel values that Jesus taught us. Yes, we may falter at times, but if we continue to grow in service of others and act with Justice—just as Mary MacKillop did—we move closer to becoming the best versions of ourselves.

Looking ahead, we also turn our attention to the future leaders of our school for 2026. The Year 12 2026 Leadership Process has officially begun, starting with a targeted Leadership Day facilitated by Mr Vaughan, Mrs Standen, and their teams. Students explored the core values of leadership within a Catholic school context, reflecting on integrity, service, and community. Each student was invited to self-nominate for leadership roles, presenting their vision and values to their peers and the wider staff. The process culminated in a panel interview, where the year group gathered and staff posed thoughtful questions to gain deeper insight into the leadership potential of our Year 11 students. Being involved in this process for a number of years now, I can honestly say that these were among the best I have seen and a real testament to the strength of character of the whole year group. Congratulations to all involved and good luck.
This season of celebration, reflection, and forward-thinking has truly highlighted the spirit and strength of our entire community, in particular, our senior students. We are proud of their journey and excited for what lies ahead.
Warm regards
Acting Principal
We are excited to offer an opportunity for parents and carers in our community to engage in a valuable presentation by Paul Dillon from DARTA (Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia). Paul has been working in the area of drug education for almost 30 years and is regularly contracted by agencies and organisations across the country to provide updates on current drug trends. He continues to work with many school communities to ensure they have access to quality information and best practice drug education. The details of Paul’s parent/carer presentation is as follows:
Date: Thursday 11th September 2025
Location: St John the Evangelist Catholic High School Hall
Time: 6pm to 7pm
Cost: Free
Presentation Topic: ‘Risk taking’ – why do teens do the things they do? What can parents do to keep them as safe as possible?
Adolescence is a risky time. As a teen matures and becomes more independent, they experience dramatic hormonal changes, increasing social and peer pressure and have greater access to alcohol and other drugs. This presentation will briefly examine the history of ‘teenagers’, rebellion and the different ‘temptations’ that have existed over time. Using the latest research on the developing brain, it will also discuss why young people make the decisions they do during this time. Sleepovers, parties and gatherings provide teens with valuable opportunities to develop important socialising skills but are not ‘risk-free’. Some practical strategies and tips for parents considering allowing their teen to attend such events to help ensure they are as safe as possible.
We invite all parents and carers to attend this valuable presentation.

What an amazing term Year 7 have had. Our first lot of Merit certificates went out today and it was amazing to see the amount of students who have achieved this already.
Students have a two year period to work through this system.
For more information see the school diary.
Students will be doing some interesting activities in PALS over the coming weeks. They had the opportunity to reconnect with their peer support leaders and we are hoping this can continue in the coming weeks. Next fortnight we will be having a visit from our local police liason officers and we will keep you updated with the information they share with students.
A reminder about who to contact if there are any concerns that you are having with your child's wellbeing or learning. Emailing the school at info@sje.dow.catholic.edu.au and asking to direct the email to the specific person you need. Teachers will respond as soon as they can but please allow time for teachers to get back to you.“Be gentle and humble in heart.”

Year 7 Leader of Wellbeing
Dear parents/carers of Year 8,
It has been an action packed year so far with more exciting events to come!
SUBJECT SELECTIONS UPDATE
Thank you to our Year 8 students and their families for being so thorough and thoughtful during the subject selection process. All selections are now being carefully worked through with Ms Akai. Please note that student subject allocations will not be available for some time, but the school will communicate with families once this information is finalised.
YEAR 8 EMPOWER ME DAY
Year 8 will be participating in Empower Me Day on Wednesday the 3rd of September (Week 7). This pastoral program is designed to help students build confidence and self-esteem, strengthen friendships, and create a more supportive year group through a series of structured activities. The majority of the day is run by Enlighten Education. Enlighten Education offers evidence-based programs designed to boost self-esteem and confidence in young people. These workshops encourage students to become discerning consumers, critical thinkers, and to find their voice and power in a complex world. The workshops aim to help students move beyond stereotypes, resolve conflicts, connect with their peers, and develop positive wellbeing behaviours. For more information, visit Enlighten Education.
Key Information:
-
Uniform: Sport uniform
-
What to Bring: Packed lunch, recess, and a water bottle (canteen open as usual). Students also need a pen. Girls will additionally require scissors and glue for one of their workshops.
-
Organisation: Students will meet as a year group in the gym after PALS. The day will conclude in time for students to catch their usual buses home.
-
The day’s program will be separated into boys and girls groups to allow for tailored discussions and a more supportive environment in each session.
-
Note: This is a compulsory event for all Year 8 students.
ELECTRONIC DEVICE CONFISCATIONS
-
Mobile phones are not to be used at any time between 8:30am and the end of the school day. If a student has their phone out, it will be confiscated.
-
AirPods are also not to be used by students unless under direct teacher instruction. These will also be confiscated.
Consequences for repeated breaches:
-
3rd confiscation: student will be required to complete an in-school withdrawal.
-
4th confiscation: a second in-school withdrawal will occur, followed by a four-week phone monitoring period, as ongoing defiance is taken very seriously.
-
Further confiscations: will result in suspension.
We appreciate your support in reinforcing these expectations at home so that all students can remain focused and engaged in their learning. We also encourage Year 8 to use lunch and recess to connect with friends, play games, and recharge. Breaks are a great time to build friendships, so we ask students to avoid isolating themselves or relying on devices.
BEING SAFE AND SENSIBLE ONLINE
Recently, there have been some negative incidents involving mobile phones and social media platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, and Instagram. To support our students in making safe and informed choices online, the Police will be visiting Year 8 in Week 8 to address important topics including sexting, online safety, pornography, and vaping. This session will highlight not only safe practices but also the legal ramifications of certain online behaviours.
We encourage families to continue having open conversations at home about responsible online use and to remain aware of their child’s digital activity.
LEARNING IN ACTION
It has been wonderful to visit Year 8 classes and see their learning in action. Recently, I dropped into a Science lesson where students worked in groups to construct their own marble towers. I witnessed lots of problem-solving, designing, and testing of their creations with enthusiasm!

MATERNITY LEAVE UPDATE
Earlier this term, I shared with Year 8 that I will be finishing up at the end of this term as I begin maternity leave. While it will be hard to step away from such a wonderful group, I know they are in great hands. The school is in the process of appointing an acting Year 8 Leader of Wellbeing, and I will ensure a smooth transition by sharing with them the needs of our students.
I am so grateful for the support I’ve received from families and look forward to returning to the role midway through 2026.
Ms Abbey Simis
Year 8 Leader of Wellbeing
YEAR 9 PDHPE
Year 9 students have recently completed their Mental Health Project Based Learning unit, where students explored the driving question: “How can I keep my mental health at its best and support the mental health of others?”. Over the term, students worked collaboratively to design creative and thoughtful products aimed at supporting the mental health of a chosen target age group. We encourage you to ask your child about their project and what they have taken away from this experience. It has been fantastic to see the level of creativity, teamwork and empathy demonstrated throughout the unit.
Here are some examples of the projects created:

Year 10 PDHPE students completed their practical Movement Appraisal unit this week. Over the first six weeks of term, students have been actively engaged in a range of invasion games, with a strong focus on developing their attacking, defensive and teamwork skills. Throughout the unit, teachers have worked closely with students to strengthen their ability to justify their observations and decisions, a key skill in both sport and learning.
The unit culminated in a written peer appraisal, where students applied their practical experiences to analyse and justify the performance of a classmate. This task not only encouraged critical thinking, but also gave students valuable insight into the importance of feedback, reflection and communication in improving performance.
YEAR 10 PROJECT BASED LEARNING - ADVOCATES FOR THE FUTURE
Year 10 are beginning a Project Based Learning unit designed to help them, and others, respond positively to the challenges that young people may face in the future. Guided by the driving question; “What initiatives could help assist young people in overcoming future life challenges?” - students will work collaboratively to design a product, service, or initiative that supports adolescent wellbeing.
This project is an opportunity for students to be creative, empathetic, and solution-focused, while building the skills to navigate challenges they are likely to encounter themselves. It also empowers them to see their potential as positive change-makers within their community.
We encourage you to check in with your child over the coming weeks and ask about their project and what they are learning from the experience.
YEAR 9 CHILD STUDIES
Our Year 9 Child Studies students are experiencing the realities of caring for a newborn through the RealCare Baby simulation task. This hands-on learning activity helps them understand the responsibilities, challenges and rewards of caring for an infant for 24 hours. There may be a few tired looking students around over the next few weeks.
Indie “Looking after the baby was definitely a challenge, I got 2 hours of sleep max, and got over it crying VERY quickly. I thought it would be fun and wouldn't be as hard as it quickly turned out to be”
Leila “Having to look after koa was definitely fun but a real challenge at times (e.g. When the baby would wake up in the middle of the night when I was least expecting it)”
Imogen “It was fun when the baby wasn't crying and you could actually treat it like a real baby and dress it up. It was also fun watching how my dogs reacted to the crying baby”

After four days of consistent rain last week the Year 9 Bushcraft students were issued the challenge of fire lighting, in preparation for their upcoming hike. After nearly an hour of resetting and restarting the majority of the class achieved success, maintaining a fire good enough to toast a marshmallow. The driving force behind Outdoor Education programs is developing student's resilience and perseverance through setting a goal and persisting until they achieve it. Skills which will be invaluable when they are faced with future challenges.

As part of the Exploring Early Childhood course, students recently completed two days of work experience in local early childhood education centres. The aim was to deepen their understanding of course content and apply their theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting. The experience proved to be invaluable, giving students the chance to build confidence, develop practical skills and gain genuine insight into working with young children.
In the words of our students:
I was hoping to gain a better understanding of what this career is like in a real workplace and see what the day to day responsibilities involve. I also wanted to explore whether its something I would enjoy in the future and see if it sparks other potential career interests.
What I was hoping to gain from this experience more skill development, experience, problem-solving, and more knowledge as I was able to observe the more experienced educators, learning from them with their techniques, strategies, and approaches to childcare.
I learnt how important it is to be patient, approachable, and understanding when working with children. I also observed how staff members manage routines and create a positive environment, which gave me a better idea of the skills needed in this career.
What I was most excited about spending time with the kids especially when being with the different age groups, gaining more knowledge, and developing essential skills in childcare.
In the rooms they all had puzzles and matching games, storytelling and reading, counting and sorting games, and building blocks. These activities all supported skills such as attention, problem-solving, language, and memory. Each activity helping them learn and make sense of the world around them.
Strategies to interact positively with young children were bending down to their level when speaking to them so that they didn’t feel overpowered or scared, speaking at their level of knowledge and vocabulary (differed depending on age group, eg. older children are more advanced), understanding the opinions and differences in all children and accommodating the attitude you approach them with to best suit them
YEAR 11 SPORT, LIFESTYLE & RECREATIONYear 11 SLR classes have been visiting Pumpin Iron in South Nowra to put into practice the theory behind resistance training and how it can be used to enhance sports performance and prevent injury. This activity is directly related to their assessment task, which is the final component of their yearly program. After conducting research, students initially designed four 60-minute resistance training sessions tailored to help them achieve their identified fitness goals. These sessions are then performed in the gym, using resistance machines, free weights, and cardio equipment.

On the 27th of August, Year 11 Aboriginal Studies ventured to the Kareela Ngura Gardens, run by Waminda - a local organisation who have implemented numerous opportunities and community health and outreach programs that have helped, and strengthened, the local Indigenous communities. Accompanying us on the visit were Aunty Jo Coleman and Aunty Chris Finney, as well as Mr Smith who drove the bus for us.
We thoroughly enjoyed the talk and tour of the gardens, which saw us trying Kia's wellness and lemon myrtle tea blends, listening to Michael talk about the programs that Waminda runs and Uncle Les talking us through the things found in the gardens that are then used in their cafe, Blak Cede. We particularly enjoyed the taste test of the finger limes grown in part of the garden - these have the texture of caviar some say, but have a sour citrus taste and a burst to them. They are DELICIOUS.
While we were there, Aunty Chris and Aunty Jo were able to present the Waminda team with a check for $2027.33 which was raised during our Foundation Day stalls.
We would love to thank Aunty Jo for organising the visit, Aunty Chris for coming along and sharing some local knowledge and stories on our drive, Mr Smith for driving the bus and the Waminda Kareela Ngura Gardens team for sharing their cultural knowledge with us. We are so grateful for the opportunity.

SCHOLARSHIPS - START NOW!
The Shoalhaven Education Fund was established to provide much needed financial assistance and support to local youth to help them achieve their post- high school education, training and vocation aspirations. We recognise that the cost of rural students pursuing their post- high school goals is often much greater than those of their metropolitan counterparts and that sometimes these costs can be prohibitive.
SEF fundraises throughout the year and accepts donations from local residents and businesses in order to provide financial grants to students who need an extra helping hand. The funds come directly from your local community – none of it is government funded – celebrating the aspirations of local youth and working to help them achieve these aspirations.
Education Department - Teaching Scholarships
If your future plans include completing an initial teacher education degree or you are currently studying to become a secondary mathematics, science, technological and applied studies (TAS) or English teacher or an inclusive/special education teacher (K - 12), you could be eligible for the Teacher Education Scholarship.
The Teacher Education Scholarship provides financial support of up to $7,500 per year whilst studying full-time, a $6,000 appointment allowance and a permanent teaching position with the NSW Department of Education following successful completion of studies.
Applications close Friday 12 September 2025, 11:59 pm (AEST).
SIT - Teaching Scholarships - Open Week 3
A reminder that the Year 12 SIT scholarship applications are open from week 3 to week 9 this term (4/8/25 to 19/9/25). Applications will not be accepted after COB on Friday 19th September 2025. We would encourage students to submit their applications before their trial exam period begins.
During term 4, students will be informed (via email), the process to move forward with their application.

Bluescope Engineering Cadetship
We’re reaching out to share an exciting opportunity for your students who are interested in engineering, innovation, and making a real impact.
BlueScope’s 2026 intake for the Materials Engineering Cadetship is now re-advertised and open for applications until September 1st. We’re especially encouraging Year 12 students to consider this pathway and we’re committed to creating opportunities for aspiring engineers.
At BlueScope, a deep understanding of materials is at the core of what we do. This cadetship offers students the chance to dive into what makes steel strong, versatile, and enduring, studying the structure and properties of materials while applying that knowledge to improve performance, production, and sustainability.
Our cadetship program combines university study with paid, hands-on experience, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world scenarios while building a career in a globally relevant industry. Materials Engineering is a broad and dynamic field, leading to careers in operational leadership, product development, technical innovation, and more.
If you have students in Year 12 (or even recent graduates in their first two years of university) with a passion for STEM, problem-solving, and meaningful innovation, please encourage them to apply.
Applications close September 1
