Dear Parents and Carers,
We hope you all had a restful and rejuvenating break over the student vacation period. Whether you travelled or stayed local, we trust you had the chance to enjoy the stunning part of the world we’re lucky to call home.
STARTING OFF WITH A PURPOSE
This year, we’ve chosen to begin Term 4 a little differently—with our Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences held right at the start of the term. Traditionally scheduled at the end of Term 4, we felt that bringing these important conversations forward would better support our students in setting a positive tone for the weeks ahead.
These conferences are a valuable opportunity for students, families, and staff to reflect on the journey so far: what’s worked well, what challenges have arisen, and how we can work together to finish the year strong. By having these discussions early, we aim to provide our students with a clearer sense of direction and purpose, helping them grow day-by-day and make the most of every learning opportunity.

Parents and carers may remember that in Term 1, we reached out with a survey to capture your thoughts, perspectives, and voices regarding some of the changes we had made around the school and the direction of our learning culture.
The feedback from that survey—completed by 97 families—offered valuable insights. It helped us implement new initiatives and refine existing ones to better support our students, families, and staff. Your input truly made a difference.
Now that we’re in Term 4, we’d love to hear from you again. Gathering your perspectives at this point in the year allows us to reflect on the impact of our efforts and shape our future direction as we look ahead to 2026.
We’re aiming to hear from even more families this time around. Your feedback is essential in helping us move forward in a positive and constructive way. To support an authentic and open response, the survey is anonymous and email addresses will not be collected.
If you haven’t already, if you could please take a few moments to complete the survey and support our collective journey forward, it would be very much appreciated!

HSC EXAMS UNDERWAY
The HSC officially commenced on Thursday 16th October, and we’ve already seen our Year 12 students begin this final chapter with strength and grace. Many have been arriving early, sharing a quiet cup of tea or coffee, and stepping into their exams with the same determination and perseverance that has marked their approach all year.
While we want all of our students to do well, it is important to note that exam results themselves could never fully capture the worth of such a special group of young people. What matters most is the effort, resilience, and growth they’ve shown throughout their journey. We hope that the preparation and countless hours of practice help each student achieve their personal best—because that’s all we could ever ask for.
We’re incredibly proud of them and will continue to support them every step of the way.

YEAR 11 BEGINS THEIR SENIOR JOURNEY
Our Year 11 students have officially commenced their Year 12 courses, marking the beginning of their senior year journey. To celebrate and support this transition, they headed off to their Senior Year 12 Retreat at Stanwell Tops this week.
This retreat is a special time for students to pause, reflect, and begin laying the foundation for the year ahead. Through shared experiences, meaningful conversations, and time spent together in a beautiful setting, students will build stronger bonds with one another and set intentions for a purposeful and connected final year of schooling.
We look forward to seeing the growth and leadership that will emerge from this experience.
Warm regards
Principal

YEAR 7 - 9 GIRLS AFL CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Friday the 17th of October the 7-9 Girls AFL team travelled to Macquarie fields to compete in the AFL championships.
Battling the 30 degree heat throughout the day the girls showed amazing determination to progress throughout the day undefeated, with only 2 subs, winning all 5 of their games. The girls took out the tournament with a convincing 33 - 7 win against Holy Spirit in the grand final.
Congratulations Ruby, Porsha, Emerson, Miley, Imogen, Olivia, Allira, Lexy, Olla, Imojen, Lily, Ivy, Lani and Nevaeh. Thank you to Kai and Fergus for helping the girls with trials, training and boosting morale on the day.

14 YEAR BOYS AFL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Under 14 Boys St John’s AFL team represented the school with pride and determination at the recent Diocesan AFL Day. Throughout the competition, the players showcased impressive skills, strong teamwork, and genuine sportsmanship. Their positive attitude and support for one another reflected the true spirit of St John’s, making the school community proud of their efforts both on and off the field.
A big welcome back to all our students and families as we kick off the new term! We hope everyone had a wonderful break and is feeling refreshed and ready for a term packed with learning and fun.
SUMMER UNIFORM
Just a friendly reminder that with the warmer weather here, we have officially switched to our summer uniform. Please ensure your child is wearing the correct summer attire each day. A reminder of the uniform requirements can be found on the school website or by checking your student diary. Each student has marked on their timetable the days that they can wear sports uniform. A reminder that wearing the wrong uniform will result in withdrawal.
THE YEAR 7 HOUSE CUP IS ON!
We are excited to announce a fantastic new initiative for our Year 7 students: the PALS Mini House Cup! This term, the Year 7 PALS groups will be competing against each other to claim the title.
The Cup will involve a variety of engaging activities designed to promote teamwork, healthy competition, and critical thinking. Students will have the chance to earn points through:
- Sporting Challenges: Fun, inclusive activities to get everyone moving.
- Trivia Quizzes: Testing general knowledge and classroom learning.
- Logic and Problem-Solving Games: Putting those sharp minds to the test.
The best part? It's not just about winning the activities! We want to celebrate great citizenship and positive behaviour. Every positive affirmation a student receives in class—for great effort, helpfulness, participation, or respect—will also be counted as valuable house points. This means every student has the opportunity to contribute to their team's success simply by being their best self!
Let's make this a term of great effort, great fun, and great team spirit! Good luck to all our Year 7 PALS groups!

“Be gentle and humble in heart.”
Mrs Sophie Daley
Year 7 Leader of Wellbeing
At the end of last term, we farewelled Ms Simis as she takes some well-deserved time to prepare for the safe arrival of her baby. We take this opportunity to thank her for her incredible dedication and wish her all the very best in this exciting new chapter. As I step into the role as Acting Leader of Wellbeing I look forward to getting to know and supporting our Year 8 students.
This is a crucial time to maintain the high standards we’ve set, particularly around organisation. It is expected that all students arrive at each lesson with their diaries, laptops, and pencil cases (fully equipped - some have been a bit empty lately!). We will be having further discussions in morning PALS to reinforce these habits, and your support at home would be greatly appreciated. Please remind your child of the importance of being organised and ready for learning.
SUMMER UNIFORM
Additionally, we ask for your help in maintaining uniform and behaviour standards. These expectations ensure that students continue to present themselves well and contribute positively to the school community.
'With Jesus we can reach the highest of heights.'
Mrs Valerie Lewis
Acting Year 8 Leader of Wellbeing
During Week 2, our Year 11 students took part in the much anticipated Senior Retreat at Stanwell Tops, spending three meaningful days away from the busyness of everyday life. The retreat provided a valuable opportunity for students to pause, reflect, and reconnect - not only with each other but also with themselves and their personal spirituality. Through a variety of activities, discussions, and quiet moments, students were encouraged to explore who they are, what they value, and how faith and reflection can guide them into their final year of school and beyond. It was a powerful experience of growth, connection, and renewal in a peaceful and inspiring setting.

RELIGIOUS LITERACY ASSESSMENT (RLA)
On Tuesday 11 November, our Year 8 students will complete the Wollongong Diocese Religious Literacy Assessment (RLA), an important part of their faith and learning journey. This online multiple-choice examination is designed to assess students' knowledge and understanding of key concepts covered in Religious Education across both Year 7 and Year 8. The RLA provides valuable insight into how well students are engaging with their RE learning and helps identify areas for further growth. It also supports the development of religious literacy, enabling students to articulate their faith with confidence and clarity as they continue to explore their spiritual and educational formation.
As we approach the end of the academic year, students in Years 7 to 10 are engaging with their final Religious Education topics, each designed to deepen their understanding of faith in a contemporary context. Year 7 is exploring "Stewards of Creation", a unit that highlights our responsibility to care for the environment as part of God’s creation, encouraging students to see themselves as caretakers of the earth. Year 8 students are studying "Striving for Goodness", which examines moral decision making and the importance of forming a well informed conscience guided by Gospel values. In Year 9, students are learning about "The Church in Australia", focusing on the history, role, and ongoing mission of the Catholic Church within our local and national communities. Finally, Year 10 is exploring "Ecumenism and Interfaith Dialogue", a topic that promotes respect, understanding, and collaboration among different Christian denominations and world religions, fostering a spirit of unity and peace in a diverse world.
This term our Year 11 students who are undertaking the HSC course in Studies of Religion will be exploring the topic “Religion in Australia Post 1945”, offering them a rich opportunity to understand how our nation's religious landscape has evolved in the modern era. In Australia today, while Christianity remains the most commonly identified faith at around 43.9 % of the population, this marks a significant drop from 52.1 % in 2016. Meanwhile, those reporting “No religion” have surged to 38.9 % - an indication of increasing secularism and diversity. At the same time, “Other religions” (including Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism) now make up about 10 % of the population, reflecting Australia’s growing multicultural and multi‑faith character. By situating their learning in this rapidly changing context, students will be challenged to reflect on the place and significance of faith - both personal and communal - in a pluralistic society, and to consider questions such as: How has migration shaped religious communities?
From Thursday 2nd October till Saturday 11th October, Madi Cleal (Corpus Christi) & I had the privilege of accompanying 14 Year 11 students from Corpus Christi and SJE to the Top End of Aus on a Catholic Mission Immersion.
Our home base was in Darwin, but we ventured south to Litchfield National Park, east to Kakadu National Park, and north to the Tiwi Islands.
During these 10 days, students had the opportunity to completely immerse themselves in the culture, community and faith of the Northern Territory and Aboriginal communities. This included going to national parks, trying bush tucker, exploring different Aboriginal art forms, going to a local community Mass, participating in cultural modules at Nungalinya College, and much more. We were very grateful to have the support from local elders, priests, educators, and other community members to make our trip so insightful, meaningful and impactful.
Thank you to Val West and Taleah Reid in Year 10 (Corpus Christi), who designed and painted an incredible artwork that we could proudly display while wearing our polo shirts. The polos depict the dreaming story of Yuin (black cockatoo) and Dharawal (whale) country, to represent our communities and culture.
A BIG thank you to Jack Lopez (SJE) and Brett Herron (Corpus Christi), who gave up time in their holidays to drive the school bus to and from the airport. We owe you!!
Please ask the students about the trip, they will be very proud and excited to share their stories!

SCHOOL STUDENT TRAVEL - 2026
BUS TRAVEL TO AFTERNOON SPORT
Dear Parents
Students travelling on a School Bus to and from school are required to have a valid school bus pass for the school service they are catching. If a valid school pass cannot be shown a fare will be charged. You can help make your child’s school bus journey more pleasant by ensuring your child has a valid school bus pass and presents it to the driver in the morning AND afternoon. Parents are reminded that the School Free Travel is only valid between home and school as per the conditions on the back of the pass. Fares will be charged for all other journeys.
Students travelling to after-school sports, such as Oztag, on a bus service that is not their regular route must pay a fare of approximately $2.50 and board only after students with a valid bus pass for that service.

INFO AND TIPS
Schoolies alternatives you want to know about
Getting teenagers to open up about their future plans can feel impossible, especially when they clam up the moment you ask “What do you want to do when you leave school?” The problem isn’t that they don’t have thoughts about their future – it’s that direct questions about careers can feel overwhelming and judgmental.
One of the most common questions we hear about school-based apprenticeships and traineeships (or SBATs) is whether you can pursue one while still aiming for an ATAR. It’s a fair question – after all, an SBAT involves working at least one day per week plus attending training, which is time you won’t be spending on your ATAR subjects.
Study Guide - What is Study??
Study is about more than just good grades - it’s a chance to build skills and habits that set you up for success throughout life. Whether you’re in high school, starting university, or returning to study later in life, how you approach your studies can shape your future pathways.
See the guide below to unpack what ‘study’ means, and the different approaches you can take to build effective study habits.
Understanding the ATAR: Common questions answered
If you’re not entirely sure how the ATAR system works, why you might need one, and how they’re calculated, you’re definitely not alone. The Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (or ATAR) can seem confusing at first, but once you understand the basics, it all starts to make sense. Here are some of the most common questions answered and misconceptions about the ATAR busted.

Shoalhaven Education Fund
The Shoalhaven Education Fund was established to provide much needed financial assistance and support to local youth to help them achieve their post- high school education, training and vocation aspirations. We recognise that the cost of rural students pursuing their post- high school goals is often much greater than those of their metropolitan counterparts and that sometimes these costs can be prohibitive.
SEF fundraises throughout the year and accepts donations from local residents and businesses in order to provide financial grants to students who need an extra helping hand. The funds come directly from your local community – none of it is government funded – celebrating the aspirations of local youth and working to help them achieve these aspirations.
