A MID-TERM REFLECTION

Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s hard to believe we’re already at the end of Week 4 and approaching the halfway point of the term. I don’t know about you, but this term seems to be flying by! Amidst the busyness, it’s important to pause and reflect on the many moments that have made this term so special already.

YEAR 11 RETREAT & AWARDS NIGHT

A heartfelt thank you to all staff and students who participated in the Year 11 Retreat in Week 2. It was a truly special experience, with many students returning with a renewed perspective and a rejuvenated spirit. This retreat has beautifully set the tone for their Year 12 journey, and we couldn’t be prouder.

Yr_11_Senior_Retreat_2025_29_.JPG

That same spirit of commitment and gratitude was evident at the Year 11 Awards Night, where we celebrated not only academic success and growth, but also recognised those students who live our school values each day. This event served as a meaningful halfway checkpoint in their senior studies.

To those who were recognised, keep growing as learners and as people. And to those who missed out this year, keep striving. As I shared on the night, achievement is wonderful, but our true focus is on personal growth. Every student has the potential to be great, and our goal is to help them become the best version of themselves—not because they aren’t good enough, but because they are capable of so much more.

YEAR 12 NEARING THE FINISH LINE

Congratulations to our Year 12 students who continued to make us proud as they completed their final exams. We eagerly look forward to celebrating their journey at the Graduation Dinner on Wednesday November 12th. This remarkable group of young men and women will always be part of our community, and we have no doubt they will continue to make us proud long after they walk through the gates for the last time.

YEAR 9 LEADERSHIP DAY

In Week 3, our Year 9 students engaged beautifully in their Leadership Day. I encouraged each of them to look within and recognise the leadership qualities they already possess. Leadership is not about titles—it’s about service. When we live to serve and uplift others, we follow in the footsteps of the greatest leader of all—Jesus.

Successful students from this day will go on to become Year 10 Peer Support Leaders, helping our incoming Year 7 students in 2026 feel welcomed, safe, and supported—a memory not too distant for our current Year 9s.

WORLD TEACHERS DAY

On Friday, October 31st, we celebrated World Teachers’ Day. I want to publicly thank all of our teachers for their tireless efforts in making our school one of the most inspiring communities I’ve ever been part of. Your passion, dedication, and unwavering support for our students and families is truly remarkable. You continue to inspire me every day—thank you!

ALL SOULS' DAY - A TIME TO REMEMBER

On November 2nd, we marked All Souls’ Day, a time to remember and honour those who have passed. We especially hold in our hearts the staff, students, and families—past and present—who are no longer with us. You are never forgotten and will always hold a special place in our community.

Take care, stay safe, and may God bless each and every one of you as we continue through this term together.

JUNIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Our Junior girls basketball team competed at the Wollongong Diocesan Championships on Monday 20 October at Beaton Park Stadium and had quite a successful tournament. Our opening game against St Marys was the most difficult match of the day. The girls fought really hard but in the end St Marys were simply too good and took the win. In our next 4 round games the girls had comfortable wins against St Josephs, Edmondson Park, St Patricks and St Benedicts. Unfortunately there were no crossover games between the two pools at the end of the round matches so despite winning more matches than any other team other than St Marys the girls could only play off for third place. In that play off match for third our girls had a comfortable win against Corpus Christi winning 27-10. Congratulations to the junior girls team for achieving third place, playing with great sportsmanship and being wonderful ambassadors for St Johns. Thanks to Georgia and Alannah for doing bench and also to Ms Gray for organising everything from uniforms to buses for the day

Mr Burian

OPEN GIRLS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Girls Diocesan Basketball Championships held at Beaton park stadium was a successful event for our girls teams this year!

The senior girls team started the day with a convincing win against Holy Spirit,  followed by two more wins and one narrow loss. The open girls progressed to the semi finals with another win and made the grand final against St Marys, Our biggest competition for the day.

The St Johns girls played a strong and competitive game holding the lead for the majority of the game. Our girls played hard, made critical shots and defended well. St Marys scrambled back to narrowly take the win in the last few minutes. Very proud of the whole team for being supportive and encouraging throughout the day. A special thank you to Georgia Hayburn and Alannah Oke.

JUNIOR BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

St John’s Junior Boys Basketball travelled up to Minto Basketball Stadium on Monday 20 October to compete in the Diocesan Basketball Championships. The boys opened their pool games with two games against Magdalene and St Francis which resulted in tight games up until the last five minutes of the game. In this period, the boys were able to create distance and put up some big wins in their final results. Later throughout the day, the boys started their back to back pool games, these being the last two games of their pool draw for the day. Again, the boys were in a tight tussle until the last five minutes against St Joseph’s which saw the boys separate themselves on the scoreboard before meeting Edmund Rice for their last game. This game was a tight one with the boys narrowly losing by six points. Onto the major semi final, the grand final qualifier. Our third game in a row in thirty-five degree heat. The boys fought against John Therry in a cliffhanger where the boys narrowly lost by two points with the final score being 27-25. Overall, the boys finished 4th for the day which was an amazing effort considering they played three games in a row in those conditions. Congratulations on your performance Junior Boys Basketball Team.

SENIOR BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The senior boys basketball gathered in the bus bay early on Monday 20 October for a day full of slam dunks, rejections and highlight reels at the Diocesan Basketball Championships. Unfortunately Edmund Rice had a similar plan as we came up against the eventual winners first up. A comfortable win against St Benedicts followed as the boys seemed to hit their stride. A competitive game against St Joseph’s followed as the boys went down narrowly. The highlight of the day came against John Therry as we held the lead against a perennially strong team for the majority of the game going down by three. In this game we were led by Blayne Rumble’s double-double, the creativeness of Toby Royston and the defensive menace that is Nate Rees, all long term contributors to basketball at SJE. The team finished 7th on the day with consistent contributions from Liam Crumpton and Aiden Spurway throughout the day. Many thanks to some first time ballers in, Liam “buckets” Johnstone, Jack Fernie and George Hyam who all made valuable contributions throughout the day.

ACTING YEAR 9 LEADER OF WELLBEING

Hello, my name is Nick Garner, and I am excited to introduce myself as the Year 9 Leader of Wellbeing for the remainder of the school year.  My focus will be on helping students build positive relationships, strengthen their resilience, and feel confident as they continue their journey through high school. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or would like to discuss your child’s wellbeing.

PEER SUPPORT

This year, our Peer Support Leaders have been selected based on qualities such as their willingness to step outside their comfort zone, engage positively in new situations, and demonstrate leadership and empathy towards others. We received an outstanding number of applications from students eager to contribute to our school community, and the decision-making process was incredibly difficult. Although we were unable to select every applicant, we sincerely appreciate each student’s enthusiasm and commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive school culture.

LEADERSHIP DAY

On Wednesday 29 October year 9 participated in Leadership Day. The cohort explored the skills and qualities necessary for leadership. The students engaged with the activities positively and developed stronger connections with their peers across the year group.

Mrs. Renshaw, Student Leadership Facilitator, along with Anya Ellerington and Xavier Smith (2026 School Captains), Lani Richardson and Charles Holden (2026 Vice Captains), and Codi Weber and Jake Swan (2025 Year 10 Peer Support Leaders), spoke to Year 9 about the significance of leadership and what being a school leader involves. They addressed the cohort, emphasizing that every student has the capacity to take on a leadership role within the St. John’s community, encouraging the whole year group to embrace the opportunity to lead by example, contribute positively to the school culture, and support one another in their growth and development as they transition into the senior school.
Yr_9_Leadership_Day_2025_38_.JPG

The aims of the activities included:

  • Drumming Activity – Highlighting the importance of working with peers to achieve a goal.
  • Failure Time! – Working in teams to solve challenges, highlighting the need to persist at a task, accept imperfection in themselves and others, and demonstrate support for others, even in the midst of failure.
  • Mindful or Mind Full? – Good leaders know they need to care for themselves first. This session focused on calming skills and provided tools to use when feeling overwhelmed.
  • The Leader I Want to Be! – This session explored leadership as a concept, personality types, and what is required to achieve the perfect balance for good leadership.
  • Facilitation and Communication Skills – Focused on the importance of good communication skills using activities that required students to give instructions to their peers to achieve a goal.
  • Smart Gym – De-escalation and self-regulation strategies were developed through physical challenges.

Going to the Ball! - This was the final activity and the highlight of the day! In groups, students chose a few “couples” to dress up in paper outfits made by the groups, to take part in the fashion parade at the end of the day. Each group cheered on their “couples,” enjoying the unique designs that had been created for their respective princes and princesses.

Student Reflections on Leadership Day

Ivy

On Wednesday 29 October we all had a fun day connecting with our friends, while learning new leadership skills at our leadership day. We did a range of activities getting us out of our comfort zones and helping gain confidence in ourselves. We learnt all about what qualities build a great leader and how important it is to manage our life.

Henry

Leadership day was fun in the fact that we were all able to enjoy being ourselves without fear of rejection or being judged. There were many fun activities ranging from boxing to arts and crafts. These activities aimed to push us out of our comfort zones and they did for the most part. The different activities all showed us what we needed to be a leader through struggle and through the breaking of boundaries. We all learnt something even those who didn’t participate as much which was really the aim of the day, which was to learn how to be the most competent leader you can be.

“Let your light shine.”

YEAR 10 FUTURE READY WEEK 9 - 8th -12th DECEMBER

Year 10 Future Ready Week is designed to help students start thinking practically and proactively about their senior school studies and/or post-school pathways.

The day's objective is to connect classroom learning with real-world careers, essential life skills, and future opportunities.

The week will consist of the following:

Senior Subject Taster Lessons: Students will get a sneak peek into the learning environments of various Year 11 and 12 elective courses.

Life After School: Budgeting and Independence: Practical advice on managing finances, living away from home, and becoming truly self-sufficient.

Managing Stress and Anxiety: Coping mechanisms and self-care strategies

Catholic Social Teachings: This session will center on the principle of Human Dignity, using small group activities designed to explore practical applications of Catholic Social Teachings  and service

Defence Careers: Students will have the unique opportunity to engage with high-tech flight simulators provided by the ADF, allowing them to test their skills and learn about the training required for aviation and technical roles within the Army, Navy, and Air Force. This is a unique opportunity for students interested in leadership, technical skills, and non-traditional careers to learn directly from ADF personnel.

Upskilling Opportunities: We are facilitating short courses focused on essential life skills and certifications. This includes an introduction to crucial upskilling options like First Aid (students must nominate for this course see details following)

** First Aid Course “Provide First Aid” HLTAID011 has been offered to all of Year 10.  This course can be provided here at school during the activities Year 10/11 days at a cost of $90 per student instead of the regular cost of $150. A google form has been sent to all students in the year group to indicate whether they would like to participate in this course.  This course has a range of uses in life outside school.  The certificate is valid for 3 years with the CPR component needing an update annually.

PLEASE NOTE: Students who have elected Year 11 Certificate 2 in Outdoor Recreation and the Fitness Course - MUST !! have this certificate to complete the course, so this is obviously a perfect opportunity to complete the course at a much better cost.

There will also be an alumni panel who will answer students questions and address topics such as:

  • Resilience and Bouncing Back: Stories of academic setbacks, changing courses, or career failures and how they recovered and learned from them.
  • The Importance of Networking: Tips on connecting with people, mentors, and peers that helped them throughout their journey.
  • Alternative Pathways: Stories of success through apprenticeships, TAFE/college, or starting their own business, not just the university route.
  • Skills for the Future: Identifying the ‘soft skills’ (like communication, teamwork, resilience) that employers truly value now, beyond academic results.

The Future Ready Week will conclude with a fun celebration on the final day! We'll mark the end of Year 10 with some lively Year Group Trivia followed by the highly anticipated Op Shop Ball.

As the highlight of the PDHPE calendar and the culmination of the Year 10 Dance unit, this event is all about fun, style, and charity! Students are strongly encouraged to find their most creative outfits at an op shop, as prizes will be awarded for the 'Best Dressed' and 'Smoothest Movers'. The bonus is that by choosing op shop attire, students are making a direct contribution to a great cause.

DANCE PRACTICE

As you can see, this is going to be an absolutely action packed week, and we are so excited to present these opportunities for our students. While attendance is a required part of the Year 10 curriculum, with the variety of experiences offered we're sure no one will want to miss a moment!

A huge thank you to Mr Wilson who has been overseeing the planning of the week.If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Mr Todd Wilson (assistant Stage 5 coordinator).

    GEOGRAPHY
    Sarah_Blades.jpg

    STAGE FOUR

Stage Four Geography has been an exciting place in the HSIE space in the last term, with students drawing upon their critical thinking and data analysis to create responses to a variety of crisis scenarios in their latest assessment. Most students were given the task of selecting an evacuation site that survivalists could relocate to in the event of a zombie apocalypse.

While it was a fictional task, it required our students to consider the environmental, infrastructure and service requirements that would allow the highest standard of living while also offering shelter from the crisis. This gave students the opportunity to exercise their learning in Geography that has delved into factors of liveability.

Students needed to write their report and to upload this into Scribo. This allowed them to see instant feedback and they were able to implement this to improve their report writing skills.

    Student feedback

What did you learn from the feedback that Scribo gave you?

    •  I need to work on my interactions and spelling. I could also work on putting more detail in my work.
    • I learnt that in the future I need to have more detail on my report

When you implemented the feedback, how did you know you were improving your work?

    • I knew my work was improving because my work started to flow smoothly when I read it and my grade improved.
    • I knew my work was improving because it was more detailed and answering the questions better.

    YEAR 9 GEOGRAPHY

Ms Swan’s class studied the importance of sustainable food. In this group project, students investigated innovative and sustainable foods that could help feed the world’s growing population in the future. They started by watching an episode of “Eat the Invaders” of their choice. Working collaboratively in pairs or small groups, students selected a “food of the future” such as edible insects, cane toads, camel, rabbit, seaweed, algae, or plant-based proteins and developed a campaign to promote their chosen food.

Through the project, students gained a deeper understanding of sustainable food production and the importance of innovation and consumer awareness in building a more sustainable future.

Work example from Lucy, Aela, Alicia and Abi who created a video that detailed how we could eat the invasive species of cane toad.

In Ms Blades year 9 Geography class last term students were asked to consider the role consumers play in ensuring our biomes are managed in a sustainable manner. After watching an excerpt from the 2016 documentary “Before the Flood” where a climate scientist stated “If you want something that you can do without appealing to any higher authorities, such as the government, I can't think of an easier, out, than changing your diet.”

Students planned, researched and cooked their sustainable meals. As a class we celebrated our class success by investigating OzHarvest research and each student received some Oz Harvest “use it up tape”.

    YEAR 9 HISTORY

Year Nine History has begun to conclude their investigations of Australia’s involvement in the First World War and now have begun to learn the integral role Australia played in the Pacific theatre during the Second World War. As students have begun to understand the unique challenges of jungle warfare and united effort required for victory in the Pacific, they have further strengthened their skills of source analysis by reading and viewing excerpts and records made by the men and women that fought in Singapore, Papua New Guinea and the following island hopping campaign. It has provided students the opportunity to consider the pivotal role Australia along with its allies played in shaping the world and circumstances they live in today.

    YEAR 10 HISTORY

As part of their study on the Holocaust, our Year 10 History students were recently introduced to the remarkable story of Eddie Jaku. The classes watched his TED Talk, which offers a firsthand account of his survival through the horrors of Auschwitz and the loss of his family.

This session moved beyond the statistics and dates often found in textbooks. Students were able to connect with the human reality of the Holocaust through Eddie’s personal testimony.

What struck students most was Eddie's ultimate message. Despite enduring unimaginable suffering, he made a conscious choice to live a life free of hate, dedicating his future to teaching kindness, friendship, and respect. His ability to find and share happiness after such tragedy served as a profound lesson in resilience for our students, reinforcing the vital importance of combating prejudice and valuing humanity.

    YEAR 10 ELECTIVE HISTORY

As a part of their studies Year 10 History Elective students investigated the concept of Heroes and Villain in History. Students were placed in an historical courtroom where they had to debate with each other about historical figures. Figures included Winston Churchill, Julius Caesar and Napoleon Bonaparte.

    PRELIMINARY HSC - ANCIENT HISTORY

In the final weeks of Term 3 as Year 11 came to a close, our Ancient History class had some special visitors. Some Egyptian mummies came alive to visit the class and share with us a mystery. After a long evaluation and decoding of the ancient texts, we discovered that there was a mystery in the Ag Farm. We quickly assembled our tools, not forgetting our special hats. We rushed to the Ag Farm to see something sticking unusual out of one of the garden beds. We closed the site off and began to dig. Please enjoy this video highlighting our findings. A huge thank you to Ms Hall and Mr Horne for letting us invade the Ag farm.

    YEAR 9 COMMERCE

Our Year 9 Commerce students have begun learning about running a business this term. The topic combines business studies theory with practical business experience as the students have the opportunity to run a business at school in Week 6 of Term 4. Students will be guided through the process of product creation and development, budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting, and implementing marketing strategies. They will be encouraged to focus on their environmental impact, ensuring that their business aligns with corporate social responsibilities. Finally, a main goal of their business will be to achieve the highest return possible on their initial capital contribution. We look forward to engaging with their business ideas and purchasing their products later this term!

    YEAR 11 ABORIGINAL STUDIES

The Year 11 Aboriginal Studies class have commenced their HSC course work, which has seen them start to write proposals for their Major Project’s, which is a major component of their HSC course. Students have considered their own interests and are currently working on proposals for the project. We were also given the opportunity to travel to Bomaderry on the 29th October, 2025 to speak with Uncle Sonny Simms at the Bomaderry Aboriginal Children’s Home. Uncle Sonny showed us through a number of photographs from when the home was operational, and shared with us some of the history of the birthplace of the Stolen Generation. We are grateful to Uncle Sonny and Travis at the Nowra Aboriginal Lands Council for helping us organise the visit, Uncle Archie for coming with us and Mr Benedetti for driving the bus.

2026 RSL AND SCHOOLS REMEMBER ANZAC ART COMPETITION

      Art_Competition_2026.JPG

      ENTRY 1: LUCY BACALES - YEAR 9

      Yesterday Lives On Today

My artwork is titled "Yesterday Lives on Today" and depicts two Gallipoli soldiers walking together through the trenches, with a puddle stretching out behind them. In the puddle, behind one of the soldiers, is a reflection of a contemporary veteran standing at attention, and instead of a reflection of the other soldier, lies a trail of poppies. The poppies symbolise how the Spirit of the ANZAC lives on through our memory of the courage and sacrifice of our WW1 soldiers, representing their hardship. The reflection of the contemporary veteran symbolises how their memory lives on in the minds and actions of our present-day soldiers, who fight to protect the same land fought for all those years ago. In this artwork, I also painted my contemporary veteran with my father and grandfather in mind, who both served in the Australian Defence Force Navy and Army. Through their service to our country, they have continued the legacy of the Gallipoli soldiers, ensuring that today is a reflection of their bravery.

      Yesterday_Lives_On_Today.jpg

      ENTRY 2: JAZMINE TOLHURST-MOON - YEAR 9

      A Hand on History

My artwork, 'A Hand on History', explores the Spirit of ANZAC, then and now, by illustrating how my family’s defence history connects past and present service. I created the piece as a still life to capture the idea that memories and values can live on through ordinary objects. The still life arrangement represents the ANZAC Spirit as it continues to exist within Australian homes. It reminds us that the courage and sacrifice of those who served are not just a chapter in a book, but a living part of who we are today.

The hand holding the letter represents courage and the strength to remember the experiences of those who came before us—the two figures in the framed photo show mateship and family connection. The younger figure represents my brother, who has recently been accepted into the Royal Australian Navy, while the older figure symbolises a father’s guidance. My dad serves in the Navy, and my ancestors fought in both World War I and World War II. The War Medal 1939–1945 represents sacrifice and endurance that continue through time.
