NATIONAL APOLOGY DAY
National Apology Day is commemorated annually on 13th February and encourages remembrance of - and apology to – the Stolen Generations and those whose lives have been blighted by past government policies of forced child removal and assimilation.
This commemoration differs from Sorry Day which is held annually on 26th May, to mark the original tabling of the ‘Bringing them Home’ report.
On 13th February 2008, the first sitting of the new parliamentary year, then-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd formally acknowledged the immense suffering experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people due to past government policies of forced child removal and decades of mistreatment of Indigenous Australians.
The National Apology to the Stolen Generations remains a momentous turning point that demonstrates the importance of historical acceptance in paving the road to reconciliation.
On February 13th 2022, it is 14 years since this apology was offered.
National Apology Day is a day to remember and pray for the children who were taken away from their families and homes. It is a step on the path to reconciliation. It is a commitment to right the wrongs of past injustices and is about building a bridge of respect between all people.

P&F MEETING
I would like to invite all parents to consider attending the P&F meetings. This group is advisory and not fund raising and aids me in understanding the needs of the school and be better able to implement initiatives and make changes. The first P&F meeting of 2024 is 6.00 – 7.00pm on Monday 18th March.
PROJECT COMPASSION
On the 13th of February, we went to John Therry, Campbelltown to participate in the launch of Caritas Project Compassion. Here we were joined by 40 other schools where we engaged in a short liturgy run by Bishop Brian before we collected our donation box. The people director of Caritas Australia was also present and shared some of the incredible stories and achievements of Caritas Australia assisting people in need, nationally and internationally. One of these stories featured Leaia, a young mother from Samoa, who has lived for years without access to clean, reliable drinking water. Through Project Compassion, Caritas Australia was able to install a water tank in their home, improving their health and living conditions. We would like to thank John Therry and everyone who contributed for making this amazing and important day possible.

FIRST FEW WEEKS
The first few weeks have flown by and officially we have completed three. The first week was the Staff Day and a few school days, so the last two weeks have been full and most exciting. I have attended the SRC leadership day at Culburra SLSC and the Year 7 Camp at Tapatalee. I have also met with the P&F committee and look forward to meeting more parents.
Our recognition Assembly of our high achieving students from the 2023 HSC group was also wonderful occasion. Again, I congratulate all of those who attended and also those who could not attend as they prepare for life after St John’s. Some have already moved interstate or to their University or work place to move forward with life.
We have also celebrated Shrove (pancake) Tuesday and Ash Wednesday and commenced the season of Lent. Ash Wednesday focusses our mind and heart on repentance, prayer and alms giving and is symbolised by the ‘ashing’ of a cross on our foreheads. The Priest will say ‘turn away from sin and stay faithful to the Gospels’ or ‘ from dust we come and from dust we will return’. We reply with ‘amen’ as a sign of entering into the agreement to try to improve ourselves.

NAPLAN
Each year the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is undertaken by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students will participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
NAPLAN 2024 will take place from Wednesday 13 March to Monday 25 March.
NAPLAN is just one part of our school learning assessment program. The tests assess literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning at school.
In preparation for NAPLAN, our school will undertake activities to help students become familiar with the format and functionality of the online tests. These activities are not an assessment of student ability and will not be marked. Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not required nor recommended.

YEAR 9 SHORT COURSE
This year all Year 9 will be doing a Short Course - Critical Thinking.
Critical thinking is a form of purposeful thinking that emphasises evidence and reasoning. In today’s world, where information is readily available, critical thinking is becoming more important than remembering and recalling facts. Society values critical thinking because it is an interdisciplinary and transferable skill. It means that no matter what path or profession is pursued, critical thinking skills will always be relevant and useful.
Critical thinking skills include the ability to deconstruct, analyse, synthesise and reconstruct ideas while emphasising evidence and reasoning. Those skills are part of every toolkit for success in educational and professional arenas.
The Critical thinking course emphasises the fundamental attributes of critical thinkers and gives students a wide range of opportunities to transfer these skills across multiple disciplines. The course structure encourages students to think about thinking.

PALM BURNING LITURGY
A number of students on Tuesday 13 February participated in a Palm Burning Liturgy. The palms were collected from Mass centres across the Shoalhaven last year and were burnt today to provide ashes for the Ash Wednesday Liturgy. Fr Joseph presided at the liturgy and blessed the ashes.
ASH WEDNESDAY
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent.

YEAR 7 CATHOLIC CULTURE IMMERSION
As an integral part of the first Religious Education topic, “Being Catholic,” and as part of the Year 7 orientation, last Friday all students experienced a Catholic Culture Immersion during periods 4, 5 & 6. During this immersion, students explored Catholic and school traditions associated with; Jesus, Saint John the Evangelist, Pax Christi, prayer and rituals. Activities included; small group discussions with our Year 11 Youth Ministry Leaders, learning and singing our school song, analysis of our school prayer and explanation of the history of our school Chapel and Catholic practices to be experienced throughout the year.

UOW Discovery Day 2024
Once again, Year 12 students seized the opportunity to attend the Discovery Day hosted by the University of Wollongong. Throughout the day, students actively engaged in a diverse array of activities geared towards enhancing their understanding of available courses, exploring pathways to achieve their career aspirations, and discovering the wide spectrum of employment opportunities stemming from their educational accomplishments.
Furthermore, students had the chance to interact with current university students, gaining valuable insights into the day to day life as a UOW student. This firsthand experience allowed them to forge a stronger connection with the university, including its beautiful green spaces, state of the art facilities, and fooderies! These interactions not only boosted their confidence and knowledge, but also built their connection with UOW, paving the way for a very positive transition into university life, should they choose to do so.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Navy Aviation Prospect Scheme (NAPS)
2023 NAPS Participants
Prospects Scheme (NAPS) offers high school students (Year 10) aged 15-18 an insight into Navy Aviation careers. The program is broken into three sections; Quicklook, NextStep and Longlook.
The program is designed to provide each Student with a continual insight into FAA and Defence careers with an overarching intent of; Raising the profile of the FAA within the community; Generating prospective applicants by encouraging Students to consider a career in the FAA; providing a service to the community through team building and leadership training; Fostering civic virtue.
The number of places is limited and to be considered for the program the Expression of Interest posted on the Careers Classroom must be filled out by Thursday, February 29.
Shoalhaven Food Network
The Shoalhaven Food Network (SFN) 2024 Gaining Through Training programme is once more providing fantastic opportunities for passionate and curious year 10 students interested in a hospitality career pathway.
The first of a series of opportunities will be an industry tour on Tuesday 27th February for targeted students in year 10 who are considering a career in hospitality and those currently enrolled in VET Hospitality.
The tour will provide students with an experiential day out at some of the Shoalhaven’s premier eateries where they will participate in hands-on activities, hear from guest speakers, and apprentices and enjoy lunch at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre.
Stage 2 which will involve TAFE masterclass sessions the week of the 8th of April followed by working alongside industry professionals at select events during the festival in May & June.
Students are to fill in an expression of interest through the Careers Google Classroom no later than February 10.
Property and Civil Construction - JohnStaff Shoalhaven Hospital
RIEP & EPP are seeking expressions of interest from Year 10 & 11 students who would like to explore the careers on offer via a STEM pathway in the Property & the Civil Construction industries. This opportunity is only available for high school students in the Shoalhaven and offers a unique experience to see a piece of major infrastructure unfold over the next 12 months as work begins on the upgrade to Shoalhaven Hospital.
The program will be devised and led by the expert project management team at Johnstaff and students will hear from industry experts including Architects, Engineers, Project Managers and more!
Students will participate in workshops and site visits on the Monday of the last week of each term throughout 2024. Transport can be arranged upon request.

NEW! Tertiary Health Study Subsidies
The Tertiary Health Study Subsidy Program will support 12,000 students from 2024. The subsidies incentivise students to enter the NSW Health workforce by reducing financial barriers to study.
The payments can assist students with fees, technology, travel, or other associated personal costs.
What subsidies are available?
NSW Health offers two subsidies:
- $12,000 subsidy paid over three years to students commencing study, and intending to work for NSW Health upon completion.
- $8,000 one-off subsidy paid to students graduating study with employment in NSW Health.
Each subsidy will see 2,000 students awarded annually for the next three years.

Charles Sturt University is offering a pathway program for Year 12 students dreaming of a career in the diverse and progressive field of medical radiation science.
You can start your undergraduate journey early by studying Charles Sturt’s Fundamentals of Nuclear Science and Safety micro-credential for free.
The program allows you to:
- Start your studies early
- Fractional load (25%), which would allow managing Year 12 studies concurrently for most students
- Reduce overall HECS debt (FREE program for domestic students)

Our Respectful Relationships program has been instrumental in promoting positive interactions among peers, teaching invaluable skills for effective communication and conflict resolution. The engagement and participation from our Year 7 cohort have been truly commendable.
Additionally, our recent Laptop Bootcamp equipped students with the necessary digital skills and knowledge to utilise technology effectively for their academic pursuits. The Catholic Culture afternoon provided an enriching experience, fostering spiritual growth and strengthening our sense of community.
Amidst these specialised programs, we've also conducted PAT testing to gauge students' academic progress and identify areas for growth. Alongside these activities, we've embraced the rhythm of everyday school life, engaging in lessons, extracurricular activities, and forming lasting friendships. In addition, we've been fortunate to have Transition Specialists in each Year 7 class, dedicated to ensuring every student feels comfortable and supported in their new school environment. Their keen observations, combined with the valuable data gathered from PAT Testing, have played a crucial role in finalising official class lists from Week 4 onwards. Students can expect to receive their updated timetables on Tuesday of Week 4.
I extend my thanks to all of you, the parents and carers, for your cooperation and guidance of your children throughout these initial weeks. Your support has been instrumental in ensuring a smooth transition for our Year 7 students, and I, along with the entire Yr 7 PALS Team, am immensely grateful for your partnership in their journey.
On Wednesday as we left for Year 7 Camp the students were very excited, a recap and report of this amazing event will be had in the coming weeks!

It brings me immense joy to resume my role as the Year Coordinator for Year 8 in 2024. The year has commenced on a highly positive note, with students displaying enthusiastic attitudes and a genuine readiness to embrace the learning journey ahead. As we navigate the beginning of the school year, I encourage our students to embody the spirit of our year group motto, 'Let your light shine.'

Our Year 8 students have actively explored the diverse extracurricular opportunities available at St John’s, providing them with valuable avenues to excel and contribute to the collective success of their peers. In our PALS (Pastoral and Learning Support) sessions, we have dedicated time to goal setting for Semester 1, empowering students to identify areas for improvement in their learning journeys. These sessions also serve as a platform for students to forge positive connections with each other and their PALS teachers, fostering a supportive and inclusive school environment.

STUDENTS BEING ORGANISED AND PREPARED
To make each school day a breeze, we're encouraging our students to get into the habit of packing their bags every night. This includes laptops charged, student diary, hats in bags and all the books and gear needed for the next day sorted. Your support at home is key, so if you can chat with your child about making this a nightly routine, that would be amazing. Maybe even find a spot at home where they can keep everything organised and in check.
Students should have already identified, in collaboration with their PDHPE teachers, the designated days for sports and normal uniform attire. I encourage students to display this information somewhere visible at home for easy reference.
SPORTS CARNIVALS
In Terms 1 & 2, Year 8 will actively participate in all three sports carnivals (Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics). It is imperative that parents/carers provide consent for these events through Compass, as the deadlines are now due. Your support in this matter is highly appreciated.

As we move into Term 3 we will continue to be a focus on developing core skills, with a particular focus on reading. To that end, I remind all students and parents about the importance of home reading. Students engaged in sustained individual reading develop critical thinking skills and a depth of understanding in relation to the construction of texts. There is no mystery to becoming a strong English student. Students that read regularly and widely open up a wide world of words and situations that stimulate the mind and expand their knowledge. There is a wide selection of texts available in the library for students to borrow and I encourage them to make the most of this resource. I also encourage students to let our school librarian know if there is a particular author or text they'd like the school to purchase.
Year 12 moves into a demanding part of their high school experience. In the coming weeks I encourage students to revise class notes, access 2021 and 2022 HSC markers comments and the syllabus rubric on the NESA site. If time permits, reading texts again will also enable students to look at the texts through a sharpened lens. As we do revision in class in the lead up to the Trial HSC, I encourage all Year 12 students to seek and take on feedback and direction given by the English teachers.
To students in Year 7-11, I encourage you to set goals for your study of English this semester and these should be set using feedback from the Semester One report and in consultation with the class teacher. This goal should ideally involve reading on a night basis as there is no better way to improve reading and writing than to read well written texts.

The boys were led by the experienced Billy Broadhurst and Jacob Ey and well supported by our first-timers Viktor Creighton and Toby Royston. The combination of experience and fresh talent obviously worked with the boys winning the Consolation final (going one better than last year!) Billy’s experience and focused play was an asset for the team with Billy winning his single match convincingly 6-1. In the final, Jacob and Billy combined to win their doubles match 6-1. Toby was the surprise packet of the team winning his first ever tennis singles match! Viktor, in his doubles match with Toby, was really getting into the swing of things smashing down aces and powerful forehands to wipe the opposition off the court.
The girls had an experienced team led by Hannah Phillips with Ava Groves, Amelia O’Neill and Gianna Gonzaga. The team started strongly, and it was so good to see the growth in the confidence of the girls which was reflected in their first match win, with all girls winning a set. The second round saw the girls come up against their archrivals St Marys. Hannah put on a masterful exhibition of tennis in her singles match. In fact, it was heard in the crowd that the standard of play was so good that they didn’t need to go to the Australian Open next year – they can just watch Hannah play! Ava rallied well in all her games, fighting for every point. Amelia was more confident this year and it showed in her play, she was really enjoying herself! Gianna has also improved since last year and chased every ball down and didn’t make it easy for the opposition.
As always, the sportsmanship demonstrated by the students was excellent and they represented St Johns with pride. Thank you for a great day out and to all the teachers who covered my classes back at school.

AGRICULTURE SHOW TEAM - INTERNATIONAL DAIRY WEEK
The St John’s Agriculture Show Team were presented with their International Dairy Week ‘Cows Create Careers’ school challenge prize money, 2nd place sash and certificates at our school Assembly. In January, 4 students were selected to compete in 3 events in Tatura Victoria. Keira, Ben, Ben, Charlie and Ms Hall travelled south for a fun filled 3 day excursion for this fantastic opportunity with a well deserved 2nd place on the day.
Hard work and commitment to Agriculture at SJE continues to see our students participate in these merry making events.

Hi, my name is Mrs Lawrence. I am the new Defence School Mentor.
I started at St John the Evangelist High School in 2010 as a School Support Officer. In 2020, I transferred to St Michael’s and enjoyed my time back in kindergarten. I am currently working between both schools. I have been a Defence spouse and travelled around Australia with my husband for thirty-three years. I have experienced the challenges that relocating interstate with a family can bring.
I aim to connect the Defence families to be more involved in the community and am currently busy settling in our new Year 7 Defence students and our Kindergarten students. I am also presently liaising with Kookaburra Kids and Open Arms to see how we can connect to the services they provide to Defence families.
In 2005, our family moved back to Nowra after moving five times in five years to five different states. My children attended Cambewarra Public School and then completed high school at St John the Evangelist Catholic High School. My husband was a Rear Admiral in the Navy and was the Head Navy Engineer for six years. He was based in Canberra and commuted for nine years while my two teenage boys and I lived at Culburra Beach. I know the impact mobility and service-related parental absence can have on a family. I am very well known in the Shoalhaven. Due to my experience in different schools in the Shoalhaven, I have come to know many students, but I have always gone out of my way to make Defence students feel welcome.
My passions are AFL and Surf Life Saving. Our family have been a part of Bomaderry Tigers Australian Football Club and Nowra Culburra Surf Life Saving Club since 2005. My husband is the President of the Surf Club and he also coaches the Bomaderry Tigers Senior Women’s AFL team.
I am very passionate about all aspects of a Defence lifestyle. My oldest son has joined the Royal Australian Navy as a pilot and has finished a degree in the Australian Defence Force Academy. My youngest son is a helicopter technician with Sikorsky Australia working at HMAS Albatross. They are now both in their sixth year. I am very happy to assist any students who might be looking for similar career opportunities.

We are excited to announce that we are about to relaunch the Dogs Connect program at St John's. We are excited to begin working with a wellbeing dog with small groups, this term. Our school wellbeing dog, 'Riot, will become a much loved and important member of our community.
Prior to commencement, we ask you to provide any information that may be relevant to your child and our program through completion of a short survey. We are aware of the range of considerations that we need to make so that our work is inclusive and successful. Within the survey is a list of common considerations we would like to be aware of.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The St John’s P&F AGM will be held on Monday 18 March commencing at 6:00 pm, at which time all positions will be declared vacant and available for nomination.
P&F Executive Committee positions available for nomination in 2024 include;
President - The P&F President presides at all meetings and provides leadership and direction for the Association by working cooperatively and collaboratively with the Principal and Parish Priest.
Vice-President - assists the President and fulfils the duties of the President when the President is unavailable.
Assistant Vice-President - understudies and shares the Vice-President’s workload; observes the roles and duties of the committee with a view to volunteering for any role at some point in the future.
Treasurer - is responsible for ensuring that all the financial dealings of the Association are carried out in accordance with the constitution.
Secretary - manages the day-to-day communications and records of the Association; organises meetings, records accurate draft minutes.
Assistant Secretary - understudies and shares the Secretary’s workload; observes the roles and duties of the committee with a view to volunteering for any role at some point in the future.
Parent Liaison Officer - keeps the parent body informed through the school newsletter and website of all P&F events and functions. They contact parent volunteers for various school events such as sporting carnivals, exam supervision and general helpers.

EUCHARISTIC RETREAT DAY
Men and women (13 years and older) are invited to join the Dominican Sisters of Saint Cecilia for a retreat day. This day will help you grow in your love for and devotion to the gift of the Holy Eucharist. In addition to talks, a personal testimony, and discussion, the day will include time for silence and prayer during a Holy Hour. An opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available.
