- SHOALHAVEN COMMUNITY OF CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
Change is our new normal and, as a community, if we support each other and place clear communication at the forefront, we will not only manage this change but it will also provide us with an opportunity to learn and grow.
Our staff, students, parents and carers have met this challenge with a willingness to ‘give it a go’ and the outcome has been admirable.
We will continue on this journey by maintaining our school and community events with a new approach. We are committed to continuing to provide access to information, support and connection and encourage all students and their families to join us on this journey.
PARENT AND STUDENT INFORMATION AND CONNECTION
We have held a Year 12, HSC and Post-School Options Information session via streaming and will be engaging with the same technology for subject selections for Year 10 over the coming weeks. We will also hold our Parent-Teacher interviews via ZOOM. We will be sending information about these events shortly and encourage you to seek support if you require it to engage with these opportunities.
We will also continue to stream our assemblies, the bonus of this has been the ability to have our parents and carers also attend remotely.
COVID RESPONSE PLAN
I also wish to assure parents and carers that providing a safe environment is a priority for the school. We will continue with our hygiene practices and increased cleaning. We have a comprehensive COVID19 response plan to be implemented should a student or staff member test positive to COVID19. We will use our usual channels for any communication via COMPASS and as such emails will be sent, notes will be placed on the school website to ensure that everyone is up to date with the current information. In case of more urgent messages a SMS may also be sent. If you have any concerns please contact the school.

STUDENTS DROP OFF AND PICK UP
Thanks so much to the student and parent/carer drivers who have assisted in the smooth transition to our new circumstances with traffic, especially in the afternoons. It has helped so much that parents have staggered the collection of students. Year 12 students have moved quickly to their cars and left their car spaces with caution. We are all learning patience during this pandemic and the safe departure from our school grounds is essential. I hope that this approach continues.
A reminder that no one can be dropped off in the bus bay. This is incredibly dangerous as buses swing into the area without expecting parked cars.
THE SCHOOL DIARY
Many students found the diary to be a very helpful tool whilst remote learning. Other students have fallen out of the habit of using it on a daily basis. Students are encouraged to list their subjects for each day and then write homework in for each lesson. Students should have their homework and assessments written in their diaries to help them plan for what is due. An idea for parents might be to go through the diary with your child and help them plan for the week ahead.
Mrs Leonie Pearce
YEAR 10 - 12
As we return from remote learning I would like to remind students to follow the St John’s absence, illness and misadventure process.
ABSENCE FROM/NON COMPLETION OF AN ASSESSMENT TASK
If a student is absent on the day a common task is due or an examination is to be held, the student will make sure that the office is notified by 8.30am by a parent/caregiver clearly on or before the due date. The following information should be provided:
- student's name,
- the name(s) of the task or tasks that will be missed because of the absence. This message will be given to the relevant KLA Coordinator.
Each task must be completed, and to support this, a student who fails to submit or submits a task late will be placed on Lunchtime Learning to complete the task.
The student must complete an ‘Application for Illness/Misadventure Form’ on their return.
APPLICATION FOR ILLNESS/MISADVENTURE
Students must have ALL sections of the Application for Illness/Misadventure Form completed before it will be considered by the Assessment Committee. No class teacher or KLA Coordinator can approve an Application for Illness/Misadventure. This responsibility lies with the Assessment Committee who will inform the relevant student and teacher once a decision has been reached.
- The student must fill out Section 1 indicating why they are applying for Illness/Misadventure and how it has affected their ability to complete a task.
- A parent/guardian must sign the form.
- The student must get their class teacher to complete and sign Section 2.
- Documentation must be provided.
- Once Sections 1-3 have been completed and documentation attached, the student is to submit the form to the Curriculum Office for consideration by the Assessment Committee.
DO NOT ASSUME ILLNESS/MISADVENTURE FORMS WILL BE APPROVED
YEAR 11 2021 SUBJECT SELECTION
Over the last few weeks Year 10 have engaged with the SJE Careers Google Classroom and they have been exploring career options under the guidance of Mrs Hill. As we begin the subject selection process I encourage parents and carers to start careers and futures conversations with your child.
During Week 7 Mrs Murphy will be presenting the curriculum information to students and this will also be available in an online format. Students will receive their subject selection booklet and a website which outlines information about individual subjects on offer at St John’s will be accessible. Over the following weeks students will watch all the clips for all subjects and they will then have the opportunity to ask questions.

FLINDERS UNIVERSITY (SOUTH AUSTRALIA)- UNITEST
Flinders University is offering uniTEST as an entry pathway for 2021.
UniTEST is an aptitude test that has been developed to assess the kinds of generic reasoning and thinking skills that underpin studies at higher education and that are needed for students to be successful at this level. UniTEST is offered to students at no cost and they cannot be disadvantaged by participating.
Flinders University will select applicants based on both their Year 12 results (60% weighting toward the ATAR selection rank) and uniTEST results (40%). NEW for 2021- Flinders will also consider applicants based on their uniTEST results (100%) as a standalone entry score (subject to SACE completion and any course prerequisites or specific admissions requirements).
Since 2014 over 1,000 students have received an offer to their preferred course at Flinders University based on their uniTEST results. This includes popular courses such as Law, Psychology, Medical Science, Nutrition & Dietetics, Paramedic Science, and Speech Pathology.
You must register with Mrs Hill as the test will take place here at St. John's. If you are considering Flinders University please let Mrs Hill know as soon as possible.

Mrs Carla Hill
Transition and Pathways Specialist
It is great to have students back at school and Year 9 have embraced their learning and commitment to the St John’s community with open arms. I encourage all students to continue to look for ways they can demonstrate their gifts either in the classroom or in the wider school community.
During our time of remote learning Year 9 worked hard to ensure that they lived out our year group motto;
“God has no hands but yours”.
Long PALS activities were designed so that students were able to engage in ways to stay connected to family and friends and to reach out to those in need, as well as reflect on what they are grateful for during this time of uncertainty.

Mrs Lynette Kelly
Year 9 Coordinator
A warm welcome back to all of our students who are returning to school after the COVID-19 lockdown. Students have been so excited to catch up with friends and get back into the classroom for some face to face learning. I know the staff missed you and were very happy to see you all back at school! It has been a relatively smooth transition back to daily school life and a massive shout out to all the support from parents and carers at home.
Hopefully a return to school and our ‘normal routine’ will be a welcomed relief to many. It is important to reflect on the experiences that our students and families faced during this time. As a Year Coordinator, I was so proud of the level of responsibility and dedication the majority of students showed towards their studies and how they conducted themselves during remote learning. This effort needs to be commended, celebrated and harnessed as we move towards our senior years at St John’s. Some of the work that students produced during this time has been outstanding and a testament of what they can achieve when faced with adversity. I know all our Year 10 students will come out of this experience better equipped to deal with the pressures of the senior years schooling.
In PDHPE students completed a project based learning assessment focussing on helping young people in the future; they made websites, short film clips, posters and informative presentations highlighting their technological skills.

Students were conducting science experiments from home and in Industrial Technology building models of their projects with paddle pop sticks. Despite not being able to physically go on bushwalks for Bushcraft, Mr Jak and Mr Higgins had students planning expedition trips to places all over the Shoalhaven. In History, students were studying changing rights and freedoms exploring human rights and changing government policies which in the current climate is a very topical conversation.
Our students showed off their fantastic musical talents by making music for hand sanitizer advertisements or dramatic music for scenes in the toilet paper aisle in supermarkets. For their English studies some students were studying the novel “Of Mice and Men”, analysing text and writing essays. Others have been studying poems by Robert Frost. When looking at his poem “The Road not Taken” it talked about a forked road in an Autumn wood and the resultant choice in choosing a path. Students can use this as a metaphor for their own journey as they transition back from remote learning and reflect on the choices and experiences they had along the way.
The above is just a small snippet of the fantastic work and learning experiences our students undertook during remote learning. Since returning it has been pleasing to see students continue to build upon the progress they made with their remote learning studies. Mrs Hill has been helping our students explore future career pathways and in the coming weeks we will start to look at subject selections for Year 11 with Mrs Murphy. I look forward to guiding these fantastic young people as they look toward their futures.

NEWS FROM THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
As we returned to school full-time from Week 5, it was a very busy week as students quickly embraced the learning culture back in their science classrooms. A quick round-up and highlights from the first week back.
Year 7 students are working through classification of living organisms and their adaptations.
Students collected vegetation samples from around the school to develop a classification key to help them to understand how scientists organise living organisms. Students have also met some of the reptiles to examine their adaptations, Monty was a big hit as usual. Students also dissected fish to examine their vertebrae and gill structure.
Year 8 students got to grips with chicken wings as they continued to develop their study of anatomy. They have been investigating the homologous structure of the pentadactyl limb to demonstrate the similarities between bone configuration and the extended structural connective tissues, including ligaments, tendons and muscles.
Year 11 Biology students began using the senior microscopes this week as they further develop their microscopy skills to quantitatively explore the microscopic world of Cell Biology. Students were able to measure microscopic structures to the thousandth of a millimetre (μm). Students were able to measure the length of locust muscle fibres 360μm and human red blood cells 6.5μm.
Year 12 students enjoying their third week back at school, have been really busy completing essential practical experiences in preparation for HSC assessment practical tasks in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
In Physics students are tasked to determine the wavelength of light emitted by a laser pointer, to achieve this they used a double slit diffraction grating to measure the interference caused by overlapping light waves and the patterns caused by this can be used to determine the wavelength of light. Clever people, those Physicists!
In Biology students investigated the genetics of an inheritable disease, sickle cell anaemia and a mutation in tumour suppressor gene P53 resulting in Breast cancer. Students prepared a gel electrophoresis chamber and separated the DNA fragments to determine causality. One of their gels is pictured below with a simplified key.
Biology students are now investigating the work of Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch as they shift their studies from genetic technologies to infectious disease. Investigating aseptic techniques to cultivate bacteria and replicating Pasteur’s classic ‘cheesy’ experiment.
Chemistry students have been preparing for their HSC Titration practical. A titration is an experiment where a volume of a solution of known concentration is added to a volume of another solution in order to determine its concentration. Solutions in which a few drops of phenolphthalein (indicator) have been added turn from colorless to brilliant pink as the solution turns from acidic to basic. Having the correct volume required to neutralise the acid-base reaction allows our young chemists to calculate the unknown concentration.
