A STORY OF TWO MARY'S
FEAST OF ST MARY MAGDALENE AND THE FEAST OF MARY MACKILLOP
A woman of strength, presence, resilience, hope and love. On Saturday 22 July we acknowledged a woman from within our tradition who epitomises these qualities. Saint Mary Magdalene has always been regarded as the first witness of the Lord’s resurrection and the first evangelist.
Mary Magdalene’s story is a moving and inspiring one. After Mary encountered Jesus and experienced some healing, she followed him throughout his active ministry. Mary Magdalene was there when Jesus was nailed to the Cross; she was there when he died. Mary Magdalene was the first one to see that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb. She was the first to meet Jesus after his resurrection and was the first to go out and tell others about this. Mary Magdalene was a loyal friend and a true disciple of Jesus. She loved Christ and was loved by Christ.
Friday 8 August is the solemnity for St Mary of the Cross Mackillop and we celebrate MacKillop Day. Two of my favourite quotes of hers are “never see a need without doing something about it” and “we have much to be thankful”.
Mary was a determined woman who set about making a difference in the lives of the children on Penola, South Australia. Together with Reverend Julian Tennison Woods she founded the sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. While setting up schools for the rural poor and changing lives her order grew.
After a period of great growth and success with her order, Mary suffered the humiliation of excommunication from the Church. Later, an episcopal commission completely exonerated her. Her life of devotion to doing God’s will is an example for all.
Mary MacKillop was Canonised on October 17, 2010 at St Peter's Basilica, Rome. Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed Mary's sainthood during the Canonisation Mass. Over 8000 pilgrims from Australia and New Zealand attended the ceremony.
The Church does not make a saint – it recognises a saint. Canonisation is the act by which the Holy Father declares in a definitive and solemn way that a Catholic Christian is actually in the glory of heaven, intercedes for us before the Lord and is to be publicly venerated by the whole Church. Canonisation is a double statement – about the life of the person and also about the faith of the people who are alive at this moment. They are as much a part of the canonisation as the person who is being recognised.”
If any parent or student has not had the opportunity to travel to North Sydney, to Mary MacKillop Place, I urge you to do so. A short walk from the train station and close to the Catholic University Campus, this tranquil and prayerful place is where Mary lived much of her life, died and is buried.
HSC TRIAL EXAMS
I wish the Year 12 group of students all the best for their exams over the next two weeks. We have a talented group of seniors who, if they perform to their ability, will do themselves proud.
These exams can be stressful for many so managing self through them is important. If your child is in Year 12 please support them during the next few weeks.
We also approach the due dates of the MAJOR PROJECTS. These students have been dedicated and hard working in developing, constructing and completing these.
SCHOOL PLAY
I had the opportunity to watch the school play – Fight With all Your Might, the Zombies of the Night – several times. Each time I witnessed the confidence and quality of performance improve as the students lost their initial fears of performing in front of crowds. Congratulations to all involved, especially Mr Burian and Ms McKay.
CROSS + GENERATION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM
NETBALL CARPARK
This project is finally complete and we can return to our normal use of this wonderful resource. As always I ask parents and carers who pick up students to be patient and careful driving around the pick up areas. The ‘peak’ traffic issues last less than ten minutes and a small amount of patience will be rewarded.
FINALLY
I wish all well as we progress throughout these colder months and head toward spring. At the recent School Assembly I reminded students that as we pass the half way mark of this year, to reflect on their learning and judge whether they have grown in the learning by the same – or more. Learning growth is a journey that never ceases, it also has varying paces. Make the most of this and life opportunities open up.
I wish all families and staff a wonderful few weeks until the next Newsletter.
Mr Wayne Marshall

SUPPORT YOUR CHILD WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH
For parent in need of support and guidance their is a parental section (https://au.reachout.com/#parents-carers) to access information and support to help you and your teen feel better. The topics covered on the website are a great place to explore and generate discussion for you and your young person.
VAPING
Research has shown that one in six teenagers aged 14-17 has vaped and one in four young Australians aged 18-24 has vaped. Most vapes contain high amounts of nicotine which has long been associated with a number of long-term health problems. In addition to that, more than 200 chemicals have been associated with the liquids inside vapes, including chemicals commonly found in nail-polish remover and weed killer.
According to the Australian government, the short-term effects of vaping can include increased risk of lung infections, asthma, heart disease and a weakened immune system.
Here is a website to help parents and carers talk to their children about vaping.

There have been a number of articles and news segments released recently about the issues of vaping. The following link is from an article posted on the ABC website.

The Four Corners segment below investigates the thriving vape black market, fuelled by rising demand among young people and a failure to police the rules. It also discusses the harms of vaping and how the federal government is cracking down on the industry, announcing plans to ban recreational vapes and introduce strict rules for their sale through prescriptions and pharmacies.

Career mapping: where to after school?
Many students are uncertain about their next steps after Year 12. But – as Phillip Williamson, Head Teacher Careers for the NSW Government’s Educational Pathways Program, writes – it’s vital to go easy on yourself, self-reflect and do your research. Here are Williamson’s practical tips for starting your career journey. The most important thing, he advises, is to focus on your direction, not your destination.

MILTON PARISH
Year 9 have started the term with positive attitudes and from all accounts are making every effort to work to the best of their ability in the classroom. Students are working with their PALS teachers to reflect on their recent reports and to create a simple goal around a subject that they may need to spend some more time on getting some things right. This is a short term goal that will be recorded by the PALS teacher and followed up regarding progress over a couple of weeks.
SPORT
Year 9 are to be congratulated for their active involvement in school sport so far this term. The students have been involved in a variety of activities offsite and school based competitions onsite. This is a relaxing and fun time for the year group.
REMINDER
Hair - Just a reminder that hair should be managed in relation to the policy as stated in the diary and as reinforced daily at school for each and every student. Boys should have no extreme hairstyles, including Mullets and carved hairstyles. The length must be kept to the length of the collar. Girls hair should be tied back at all times including when first arriving at school and in the afternoon when catching buses home.
Social competitions - These are designed to give Year 9 further opportunity to interact with each other in a social way at school during lunchtime. A sports competition and another round of the UNO competition will be offered to the year group to participate in this term.
Attendance - Just a note to inform parents that attendance is of paramount importance for students at school and that data indicates that those who attend school regularly achieve highly and are much more likely to build strong and positive social connections. To support this and for your information, PALS teachers are asked to call home if your son/daughter is away from school for 3 consecutive days as a way of offering support and to assist in managing any issues.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your son and daughter moving through Year 9 this term, please do not hesitate to contact their PALS teacher and/or Year Coordinator.
Kind Regards
Year 9 Coordinator
All students should have finalised their Year 11 2023 Subject Selection choices.
If there are any concerns please do not hesitate to contact the school. Students will be notified of their final subject choices early Term 4.
Last term saw a number of exciting activities for Year 10. Thank you to all those teachers who gave the students the opportunity to participate in a diverse number of activities across a number of subject areas.
Mr Nick Garner
Year 10 Coordinator
YEAR 12
Year 12 moves into a demanding part of their high school experience. In the coming weeks I encourage students to revise class notes, access 2021 and 2022 HSC markers comments and the syllabus rubric on the NESA site. If time permits, reading texts again will also enable students to look at the texts through a sharpened lens. As we do revision in class in the lead up to the Trial HSC, I encourage all Year 12 students to seek and take on feedback and direction given by the English teachers.
YEAR 7 - 11
To students in Year 7-11, I encourage you to set goals for your study of English this semester and these should be set using feedback from the Semester One report and in consultation with the class teacher. This goal should ideally involve reading on a night basis as there is no better way to improve reading and writing than to read well written texts.
Ms Michelle Selmes
English Coordinator
