HSC Minimum Standard Testing

As you would be aware Year 9 NAPLAN tests are no longer available as an early way for students to demonstrate the minimum standard of literacy and numeracy needed to receive the HSC.

The HSC minimum standard is set at Level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).The ACSF is a nationally agreed framework used to identify and develop core skills required for personal, community, work and training contexts. Level 3 of the ACSF describes the functional literacy and numeracy skills required for life after school, for work and further education.

Some students will be eligible for extra provisions or be exempt from meeting the HSC minimum standard in order to receive their HSC.

Current Year 12

For students completing the HSC in 2019 - You do not need to meet the HSC minimum standard or pass the online tests to receive the HSC.

Current Year 11

For students completing the HSC in 2020 - You need to meet the HSC minimum standard to receive the HSC. Most students have already met this requirement.

To show you meet the standard you need to:

  • pass the online reading test or have achieved Band 8 or above in reading in Year 9 NAPLAN in 2017.
  • pass the online writing test or have achieved Band 8 or above in writing in Year 9 NAPLAN in 2017.
  • pass the online numeracy test or have achieved Band 8 or above in numeracy in Year 9 NAPLAN in 2017.

Current Year 10

Students who will complete the HSC in 2021 are required to demonstrate that they meet the HSC minimum standard by passing online tests in Reading, Writing and Numeracy. Testing will be occurring during Weeks 3 and 4 of Term 2.

Results

Students will be able to view their progress towards meeting the three areas of the HSC minimum standard via their students’ Students Online account.

In order to become familiar with the testing, students and parents are encouraged to access the NESA website to try demonstration questions to get a feel for the test format and view sample test questions and answers online.

For further information about HSC Minimum Standards please refer to the NESA website. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the curriculum office.
