ASSORTED NEWS
NSW LAW SOCIETY MOCK TRIAL
Some of our students were provided with an incredible opportunity this term, taking part in the NSW Law Society’s Mock Trial Competition. The event provided students with practical experience of running a court case in a true adversial setting. Our team acted as the prosecution in a criminal assault trial with Chevalier College via Zoom link, with both teams displaying and learning a range of great skills and knowledge.

St John's were the prosecution against a defendant charged under Sections 93C and 93D of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW), for the offence of causing Affray.
Whilst the defendant tried unsuccessfully to have the charge reduced to a lessor one, they did concede that that the act was committed in 'self-defence'. The prosecution was unsuccessful in proving beyond a reasonable doubt that when the defendant committed the offence, that it was not done in self-defence.

Our prosecution barristers and solicitor were supported by the prosecution witnesses, Louisa Gilmore and Constable Heinz. Our team also supported the smooth functioning of the court with the magistrate's clerk.
Congratulations to all students for challenging themselves with this exceptional opportunity!
