Year 7 - Personal Discovery - ‘Who I Am’

Students explored how passion can have an impact on the type of work people do. They also learned about career tests as a resource for further research and undertook the Torrens Career Crush. 

Year 8 - Career Exploration - Me at Work 

Students signed up to iThe Careers Department' website and undertook profiling to see what work style they have and using their interests and skills looking at possible careers that may suit them to explore further. 

Year 9 - Career Discovery - What is my current strategy? 

Students learned that many pathways can lead to the same career. They used checklists and career timelines to further reflect and develop a plan based on their current identified areas of career interests.

 

YEAR 11

University of Wollongong (UOW) Summer Master Class.  This program caters for Year 12 students who wish to get a head start on their university study and their HSC preparation by completing a university subject over their Summer school holidays.

2022 Summer Master Class applications are *NOW OPEN* and closing at midnight on Sunday 10 October 2021. A great opportunity for all Year 11 students considering studying at UOW in 2023.

 2022 SUMMER MASTER CLASSES

  • Complete a university level subject during their Summer Holidays, earning themselves 6 unspecified credit points that can be used towards most UOW undergraduate degrees
  • Undertake a subject that draws on and expands on current HSC subject syllabus
  • Get a taste of what it is like to undertake university study, including engaging with university staff, systems and processes
  • Students who successfully pass their Summer Master Class subject will at minimum be guaranteed an Early Admission Interview to the university degrees that align with the Summer Master Class subject (please note students are guaranteed at minimum one interview offer to a course determined by UOW staff to be the best fit based on student interest and demonstrated academic ability. 

 

The cost of the program for 2022 will be free or $230 (as we are an In2Uni school), depending on a student’s personal circumstance. This is great value compared to HECS fees between $495 – $1812/ subject. Click here for more information.

 

CAREERS WEBINARS 

Careers webinars have been offered to students in the last 2 weeks. Students need to keep up with their Careers Google Classroom pages as this is where these opportunities are advertised. 

 

CYBER SECURITY 

Cyber Security is a growth industry of the future. 

Panel Discussion: Exploring Career Pathways in Cyber Security

BLUESCOPE STEEL 

In this 60 minute online session, we heard from the BlueScope team on some of the potential areas of work and jobs available within the steelworks, focusing on the following areas:  Engineering (Materials, Electrical, Mechanical), Trades (Electrical and Mechanical), Cyber Security and the Environment Department

This was a valuable session from one of our biggest employers across the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands showcasing to students that working for BlueScope doesn’t simply mean a life on the foundry floor, but a rewarding long-term career with a company that is embracing future tech, environmental considerations, women in non-traditional roles, a diverse workforce and invests in its employees with life-long learning opportunities for professional development.

 

HAIR, BARBERING AND BEAUTY 

This interactive 45 minute session provided an overview of the careers in the Hair, Barbering and Beauty Therapy industry. It covered the TAFE NSW pathway options and included Industry experts sharing their career and pathway journeys. 

The session began with information on the career pathways and courses available followed by 2 demonstrations on how to create a Fashion Brow and Faux Freckles.

 

YEAR 12

SCHOOL RECOMMENDATION SCHEME (SRS)

School Recommendation Schemes (SRS) is one way institutions make early offers of undergraduate admission to Year 12 students. They do this by using criteria other than (or in addition to) the ATAR, this information is provided by the school. SRS Applications close Sunday 19 September.

 

UAC

Just a reminder that early bird (on time) UAC applications close on 30 September so you only pay the early bird fee of $70, rather than $200 if you pay after that date. 

 

SCHOLARSHIPS 

Year 12 students are encouraged to apply for as many scholarships as they are eligible for. Scholarships are available to all school leavers. They can be awarded for students from rural areas, families in financial hardship, sporting, academics, having a passion for a particular industry and many other reasons. Click here to view a list of current scholarships to consider.
