YEAR 11 NEWS

Term 2 is set to be another busy term for Year 11. Students have a number of tasks to complete and the workload is picking up. This is a timely reminder for each student that they need to have a well structured study plan, to look over the one they created at the start of the year and make relevant changes where needed to suit current circumstances. If students need support in preparing their study plan please see your PALS teacher.

Year 11 continues to get involved in a variety of areas across our school and wider community. It was pleasing to see so many students from the year group attend local ANZAC Day marches as well as play significant roles in our school ANZAC Commemoration Assembly.

PASSPORTS

A reminder that students need to be completing their PASSPORT whenever they participate in extracurricular activities or community service. This record is evidence that will support senior involvement in the community and contributes to their final report and reference. Passports will be checked over the next two weeks to ensure students are getting involved in the school and wider community.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

St John’s Athletics Carnival is coming up on Friday 13 May.

This is always a fun day for students and staff and a great opportunity for getting involved and earning house points. I look forward to seeing many of the Year 11 students competing in the events on the day. Go Purcell!!!!!

YEAR 11 UOW FUTURE ME WORKSHOP

On Tuesday 3 May Year 11 students attended the University of Wollongong ‘Future Me’ workshop to assist in planning their future study and employment options.

YEAR 11 GEOGRAPHY FIELDWORK

Recently our Year 11 Geography students participated in on in-site fieldwork study, examining the characteristics of soil through collecting samples from various locations and charting the texture, colour, structure and pH levels.

KEIRA BUCKPITT - BILLABONG OZ GROM SURFING CHAMPION

Keira.jpg
Keira Buckpitt of Year 11 continues her dominance in the surf, recently winning her first Billabong Oz Grom Cup presented by Coopers Surf Australia after years competing in the event. Here’s a little about Keira, as published by Surfing Australia's Facebook Page (Images; Lighthouse Sports Photograhy.)

Home: Culburra Beach

Club: Ulladulla Boardriders
First wave: 4 yrs old - I always wanted to keep up with my brothers.

Keira_Surf.jpgWHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT YOUR FIRST WAVE?
I got a Roxy wetsuit for Christmas and a yellow red back soft top board. I can remember us all going to a place called Currarong and us meeting up with our friends, The Smalls, their daughter Holly pushed me onto a wave and I stood up properly for the first time. I can remember mum and dad cheering.

WHAT WERE CONDITIONS LIKE THIS WEEK?

The waves were quite challenging it was more the amount of water moving and wash through sets that was most challenging. I don’t mind big waves as I do often surf large conditions living where we do and having 2 older brothers to go out with.

WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS?
One of the highlights was watching the jet ski assist towing the kids out the back in a junior comp at McCauleys.
It was awesome getting to surf with only 4 people out at Park Beach corner with good waves. And it’s aways good seeing all of my friends from up and down the east coast.

HOW WAS THE FINAL?Keira_Surf_a.jpg
The final was actually hard especially when no one caught waves for over 10 minutes. I was stoked when I finally got a wave it got pretty tense when we all couldn’t get onto them. I was so happy when I got 2 scoring waves and the hooter went off.
HOW DID IT FEEL TO WIN?
I have always wanted to win the Oz Grom Cup. I’ve gotten close over the years so this win was special as I have aimed for this for a long time. I’ve been to every one since it started. I’ve actually now got a full set of cups! I was stoked to now have made the Hoey Moey Wall of Fame in my final year.

Keira_Trophy.jpgPLANS FOR 2022?
I would really like to make a final in a Pro Junior because semis have been my best result so far. At Worlds in May I’d really like to get through a few rounds.
I also want to Thank the people who are supporting me Southernman Surf Ulladulla,Roxy, Ocean n Earth, Otis eyewear and Surfpaste they help me so much to follow my dream.

A fabulous opportunity was experienced by Finn Lochrin on Saturday, with Finn along with his friend Ollie combining as 'The Pipers Son' to perform their original songs at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre.
The songs are about being your best person and being true to yourself and were performed as the opening act for St John's Alumni, Annaliese Szota’s 'Hearthstone' album launch.
