YOUNG ENDEAVOUR VOYAGE

During our assembly last week, Dylan Johnstone of Year 11 shared his story about the life changing experience he enjoyed, sailing upon the 'Young Endeavour'.
1.jpg

The young Endeavour is a tall naval sailing ship, 44 metres in length with a mast height of 33 metres.

Young people between the ages of 16-23 years are able to apply for the unique 10 day voyage, with the selection process being on a ballot system, similar to a lottery.

The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme focuses on personal development opportunities for the youth of Australia. The emphasis of each voyage is building skills and attributes to develop each participant into a better team player, a more effective communicator and a leader.

"You are doing this while having a lot of fun too. Each day is filled with fun based activities and everyday is different to the other as you learn to sail this huge ship." - Dylan (Year 11)

On 9 April Dylan set out on the adventure from HMAS Waterhen located in Northern Sydney,  sailing for ten days up and down the coast of Australia going as far North as Broken Bay and south as Jervis Bay. Initially the trip was planned to go from Eden to Sydney but Covid prevented that from happening. Although it was disappointing in that part, Dylan said it opened up more time to do other things as they didn’t have to keep a tight schedule.
6.jpgOn the trip they learnt how to climb the masts, set and furl the sails, navigate and steer the ship and keep watches to keep safe and under control. They also got to swim in the ocean, watch seals play off the bow of the ship, go for beach hikes, play games and learn about each other. This all led to a day called Command Day, where the Youthies had total control of the ship for 24 hours.
They had to complete 24 challenges, one being finding the navigation instructions located on the nearby beach. We then navigated the ship throughout the day and night. As well as this we had some amazing food cooked by our personal chef who works onboard.
Whilst Dylan describes his experience as the best adventure he has ever undertaken, his thoughts are echoed by two of our Year 12 students, Jade Poulton and George Broome who also took on the challenge of the Young Endeavour Voyage in November 2021.
Applications are now open for future voyages. We encourage students to jump online and apply. For further details, visit www.youngendeavour.gov.au or chat to our students; Dylan, George or Jade.

2021 GRADUATE CARRIES ON COMMUNITY WORK

Joe Visser graduated from St John's in the class of 2021. The talented Purcell House Captain with a passion for music and writing, has continued to demonstrate the Catholic values we engage in here at St John's, volunteering in various community roles and encouraging other young people to do the same.

1.jpg

In addition to writing his own songs and balancing his studies, Joe volunteered alongside another St John's graduate, James (JD) Talty, creating the radio segment 'J²' becoming hosts and  interviewers on the Triple U FM radio community radio station throughout 2020 & 2021.

One of J²'s first interviews on air was with a local Shoalhaven 2 piece rock band 'The Debbies', consisting of 2019 St John's graduates Alex Robertson and Noah Egan.

Joe also donated many hours assisting with local beach patrols as a volunteer lifesaver and around the same time joined the #LoveOzYA committee, a group dedicated to promoting Australian Young Adult literature to Australian teens.

Joe has combined his writing talent with his commitment to making a difference, publishing an article in the Sydney Sentinel's online publication encouraging youth to make a difference today, as Australia marks National Volunteer Week.

Joe's articles may be viewed on the following links. We are extremely proud to see our graduates continue to live by the values instilled at St John's. Congratulations Joe!
