YEAR 9 NEWS

Year 9 have been working hard and engaged in several interesting activities/content within their subjects. The outlines below will hopefully give you an insight into the daily lives and education our Year 9 students are receiving.

Thank you to all the teachers who have provided summaries of this term’s classwork and events.

LEADERSHIP DAY

On Tuesday Year 9 engaged in their Leadership Day, completing a variety of fun and exciting group challenges! Some of these included;

  • The Four Way Chair Sitting Challenge

  • The Drumming Challenge

  • Students finished the day working in teams demonstrating fabulous group work and creativity to produce some wonderful outfits in our traditional paper fashion parade!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Year 9 were tasked with a learning matrix to complete for their Religion assessment this semester. Students were to pick different activities to complete including creating a symbol of the Passion of Christ, choreographing a dance routine depicting the story of Jesus' passion, creating an iMovie or writing a journal entry from the perspective of someone in the crowd, just to name a few. Leilani Bagley chose to create a diorama to represent a scene from Jesus' passion. Ms Berryman.

STEM

Students have finished a graphical presentation based on measuring out areas and relevant equations related to real life Mathematics in a workplace. The presentation of their project was through Adobe Illustrator. Students have started a sustainable housing design where students learn about passive design and apply this in a design project and justify their materials, placement of windows, design and orientations. They will use Floorplanner and Google sketchup in their presentation. Mr Gould.

DANCE

Year 9 Dance have had an incredible year in their elective subject! They have been learning about composition, in groups and individually, responding to a stimulus, studying musical theatre works, creating dance films and analysing dance works. Every practical lesson is full of laughter, smiles and high energy and a highlight has been watching each students' confidence grow throughout the year. I am blessed to have such a committed, passionate and dedicated year 9 cohort, there is never a dull day with this class and they make me so proud each and every week! Ms Lloyd.

GEOGRAPHY

In Geography, Year 9 has begun studying Changing Places. They are acting as 'town planners' and have been given the very exciting opportunity of designing a new sustainable town. The best part is they have an unlimited budget!
Some of the amazing town features Year 9 students have come up with so far include roads made from ink cartridges, solar and wind farms, community gardens and electric car charging stations. Students are enjoying the creative side of the task and linking it to a real world job. We might have some future town planners in our Year 9 group. Ms Freshwater.

PDHPE

9PDHK has been lucky to have two new students join us this term. Welcome Milli and Yanna! In our theory lessons we started off with a Kahoot to test our knowledge and see how much we remember from our risky business unit in year 8. Well done to Caidan, Georgia H and Mia who took out a podium finish and were winners of the popular joystick lollies! We have had some great conversations about partying safely and ways to minimise harm. We will be looking at strategies to keep ourselves and our peers safe. For our practical component we are looking at net/court games and we are looking forward to some competitive badminton games as well as volleyball and other variations of court games involving nets - it's time to get creative!. We are hoping the sun makes an appearance and we can get out on the oval towards the end of the term for some summer games to wrap up the year - fingers crossed! Ms Fulop.

BUSHCRAFT

In Bushcraft this term the students are learning how to canoe. This involves a number of practical sessions on the Shoalhaven River and Bomaderry Creek during class time and culminates in an overnight canoeing trip towards the end of the term.

While we are teaching students the skills of canoeing one of our big focusses is on the interpersonal skills of teamwork and communication, which also involves listening. These skills are vital for successful canoe paddling but are also developed during the preparation and pack up phases of our trips. For some students these essential life skills are proving a little more difficult to master than the technical aspects of canoeing! Ms Semmens.

MATHS

Year 9 Maths have been looking at Similar figures and Enlargements. They have been exploring what happens to the dimensions of a shape when you enlarge it . They discovered that if you enlarge the side lengths by 2, the area will be 4 times bigger, and the volume will be 8 times bigger. From modelling this in a diagram, they were able to come up with a general formula for an enlargement of any size. They also found out that you can work out the height of something very tall such as a tree or flagpole if you know the height of a person or something else smaller that you can measure. Both of the subjects will cast a shadow which can be measured and using our knowledge of similar figures, we can work out the height of the tall item. The only issue we had with this was the constant rain and  cloudy days meant a shortage of shadows! Ms Kidson.
