SOCCER GIRLS - JUNIOR

In the Diocese of Wollongong Girls Football Championship, the St John’s U13 team played fearlessly and confidently throughout the Championship proudly coming 3rd after just losing the semifinal to the eventual winners. The team had a number of goal scorers with all girls showing amazing skill and determination. The team played marvelous football throughout the tournament, with many players staring especially  Lexy who was brilliant in goals.

SOCCER GIRLS - INTERMEDIATES

On the 31st of March a well trialled and poorly trained experienced footballers travelled across Hillcrest road by foot. The year 9 pathways team started their campaign against Corpus Christi and took a while to settle into the game. They scored early in the second half with a goal clinically slotted in by Hayley Short, unfortunately Corpus snuck in an equaliser late in the game resulting in a draw. A slow and disjointed game followed against St Joseph’s, which resulted in a nil all draw.

In a game with a bit more feeling St Johns maintained their cool and beat Mt Carmel 2-0 with a beautiful free kick from Hayley Short and a wonderful strike from makeshift right wing Bridie Glover. Taking an early lead in a game against Holy Spirit thanks to the aerial presence of Hailee Glover, disappointingly again we allowed an equaliser.

We finished equal first in the pool with two other teams. We were moved to equal second based on for and against, and finished third based on the number of goals scored which meant we missed the semi-finals. We comfortably accounted for St Benedict’s in our final game finishing in fifth place overall. The girls demonstrated great sportsmanship and respect for the officials and opponents on the day, a team to keep an eye on into the future.

OPEN BOYS SOCCER

The open boys soccer team exhibited their competitive spirit by participating in the Open Boys Soccer Championships held in Woonona on Monday 8 May in very cold and windy conditions. They played against several teams from the region, including John Therry Catholic College, Edmund Rice College, and Corpus Christi Catholic College. Although we did not secure any victories, the event was a great opportunity to showcase their teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship. Moreover, our students had the chance to build new connections within the diocesan community, which was an added bonus.
