NEWS FROM GOOROON
NAIDOC WEEK ASSEMBLY AND MORNING TEA
On Tuesday 27 June, we held our NAIDOC Assembly at St John's. National NAIDOC Week is held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The theme for National NAIDOC Week 2023 is 'For Our Elders'. To acknowledge that across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and a prominent place in our communities and families.
PAST AND PRESENT STUDENTS REFLECTIONS ON NAIDOC CELEBRATIONS
I feel privileged to have been asked to have my input into our NAIDOC artwork. For me, NAIDOC is an important week to celebrate our culture. I enjoyed getting together and connecting through Indigenous art, and to be able to share this opportunity with my friends made it extra special.
Thankyou for giving us girls this opportunity!
Kilarni Aldridge - Year 8
For me, NAIDOC serves as a reminder of the continuing journey of reconciliation and the need for more understanding and recognition of the unique experiences and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is a time to reflect on the importance of listening, learning, and respecting diverse communities and to work towards a more inclusive and equitable society.
Davis, Matilda - Year 9
What does NAIDOC mean to me
NAIDOC means to me, celebrating my culture, embracing my heritage and sharing it with others.
Kiah Shine - Year 12
As a past student of St John's, this year's NAIDOC celebration was special to watch. The dedication and commitment of all students involved was relayed through their performances. I am thankful to be able to watch our students grow and connect with their Aboriginal culture through art, song, dance. It is vital that we keep learning, passing on knowledge from our elders and embracing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievements.
