BLUESCOPE - STEELWORKS INDUSTRY TOUR

'SEE YOURSELF HERE'

In August, our enthusiastic students from Year 9 to 12 embarked on an exciting journey with Bluescope's 'See Yourself Here' Steelworks Tour! This incredible opportunity allowed students to dive deep into their passions for engineering, minerals, and science.

During the tour, participants had the chance to explore various areas of steel production and witness firsthand the intricate steps involved in the manufacturing process. It was a truly immersive experience that sparked their curiosity and creativity.

The tours left everyone buzzing with inspiration and potential ideas for future career pathways!

A special thank you to Ms Blades for accompanying this group on the excursion.

ACU Information session

ACU.PNG

ACU representatives met with a group of Year 10 students recently to provide them with essential information about the unique opportunities this university has to offer.

The event offered an excellent chance to hear, in person, the diverse array of career pathways and scholarships that ACU is currently providing to students. Furthermore, during the open forum, we delved into details regarding accommodation options and the many support services available for students. The attendees were highly engaged and asked key questions to enable them to take the first steps in planning their post-school pathways.

It was a valuable opportunity for them to get a first hand look at what ACU could offer on their educational journey!

White Card Training - Congratulations to all Year 10 participants!

Statistics show that in 2019 an average of 183 workers were fatally injured as a result of accidents in the workplace in Australia. The White Card Course in NSW is designed to raise awareness and help implement strategies and practices to eliminate these risks that cause injuries and fatalities in the workplace.

On August 24, a further twenty students successfully completed the White Card Training with Accelerated Training. They engaged in all activities positively and clearly demonstrated the knowledge and skills required to work safely in the construction industry. Students are now able to seek work experience in a range of industries within construction.

Well done everyone!

Year 10 Work Experience 2024

December 4 - 8

In Term 4, Week 9, all Year 10 students will have the opportunity to participate in the work experience program. This is a valuable chance for students to delve deeper into a field of their interest, gaining a firsthand understanding of the roles within it. Such immersion can prove immensely beneficial as it allows individuals to discern whether their chosen industry aligns with their aspirations.

To facilitate this process, I encourage parents, guardians/carers, and students to refer to the Careers Google Classroom for guidance on how to approach potential employers. For your convenience, I have included all necessary documentation as attachments, streamlining the entire process.

To participate in this program, It is compulsory for all students to:

  • Complete and upload the Work Readiness Certificate to the Careers Classroom
  • Complete the White Card Training if they intend to work on a construction site
  • Complete and submit the Working with Animals Guideline form
  • Complete and submit the Student Work Placement document to the Careers Office

UAC Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS)

Applications Close 18 September - You should all apply!

The Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) is one way institutions make early offers of undergraduate admission to Year 12 students. They do this by using criteria other than (or in addition to) the ATAR.

Each institution has its own policy for determining SRS eligibility and making offers. For example, you may also have to submit an EAS application institution-defined dates, or attend a school in a particular region.

SRS is not available for all courses. The institution-specific SRS criteria detail any exceptions.

UAC Let's Chat - Applying to the Schools Recommendation Scheme

6 September

While the ATAR is still the main selection tool used by most universities, there are other ways for you to show that you’re ready to succeed at uni. Many institutions have one or more early offer schemes for Year 12 students. Through these schemes, institutions assess you using criteria other than (or in addition to) your ATAR.

We'll give you an overview of the Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) and discuss:

  •       how to apply
  •       whether you're guaranteed early entry if you apply
  •       other universities' direct early entry schemes
  •       how many early entry schemes you can apply for.

https://uacdigital.easywebinar.live/registration-srs2023

Have a back-up plan: Pathways to Uni

UAC always recommends that, when you choose your course preferences, you include a 'back-up' course; that is, a course you are confident you'll be offered a place in and will be happy to study if you miss out on offers for your higher preferences. For example, you could include a diploma course in a similar area of study as your preferred degree course. You could then use your diploma studies as a stepping stone to the degree: you may even be able to move straight into second year. Pathways to uni.

UAC Career mapping: where to after school?

Many students are uncertain about their next steps after Year 12. But – as Phillip Williamson, Head Teacher Careers for the NSW Government’s Educational Pathways Program, writes – it’s vital to go easy on yourself, self-reflect and do your research. Here are Williamson’s practical tips for starting your career journey. The most important thing, he advises, is to focus on your direction, not your destination.

https://www.uac.edu.au/media-centre/news/career-mapping-where-to-after-school

What is the ATAR?

The ATAR is a rank, not a mark.

The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a number between 0.00 and 99.95 that indicates a student’s position relative to all the students in their age group (ie all 16 to 20 year olds in NSW). So, an ATAR of 80.00 means that you are 20 per cent from the top of your age group (not your Year 12 group).

Universities use the ATAR to help them select students for their courses and admission to most tertiary courses is based on your selection rank (your ATAR + any applicable adjustments). Most universities also use other criteria when selecting students (eg a personal statement, a questionnaire, a portfolio of work, an audition, an interview or a test).
