Silverdale Farm & Kembla Grange Racecourse - Equine Industry Tour
The Industry Exploration Tour held in early September, was an enriching experience for Year 9 and 10 students who had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of the equine industry. Participants were introduced to various job roles and career prospects within this dynamic field. Throughout the excursion, students had the chance to interact with industry experts who shared their insights and experiences.
The day began early as students ventured into the heart of the equine world—the stables. Here, they gained firsthand knowledge of the daily activities, facilities, and the diverse job roles that revolved around these magnificent horses. From stable hands to trainers, the equine industry boasted a multitude of career options.
A visit to NSW's premier racecourse opened students' eyes to the numerous job variations associated with horse racing. The excitement of the track, combined with administrative roles and event management, underscored the industry's vastness.
The opportunity to explored a breeding stud farm was a key highlight for the day. The serene surroundings, adorable foals, and the intricacies of horse breeding made for a memorable experience. This segment showcased the industry's commitment to animal welfare and growth.
Meeting industry experts offered valuable insights into career pathways. Students learned about the courses, traineeships, and opportunities that could pave their way to a successful career in the equine world.
A big thank you to Ms Hall for accompanying the students on this excursion!

Have a back-up plan: Pathways to Uni
UAC always recommends that, when you choose your course preferences, you include a 'back-up' course; that is, a course you are confident you'll be offered a place in and will be happy to study if you miss out on offers for your higher preferences. For example, you could include a diploma course in a similar area of study as your preferred degree course. You could then use your diploma studies as a stepping stone to the degree: you may even be able to move straight into second year. Pathways to uni.

UAC Career mapping: where to after school?
Many students are uncertain about their next steps after Year 12. But – as Phillip Williamson, Head Teacher Careers for the NSW Government’s Educational Pathways Program, writes – it’s vital to go easy on yourself, self-reflect and do your research. Here are Williamson’s practical tips for starting your career journey. The most important thing, he advises, is to focus on your direction, not your destination.

What is the ATAR?
The ATAR is a rank, not a mark.
The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a number between 0.00 and 99.95 that indicates a student’s position relative to all the students in their age group (ie all 16 to 20 year olds in NSW). So, an ATAR of 80.00 means that you are 20 per cent from the top of your age group (not your Year 12 group).
Universities use the ATAR to help them select students for their courses and admission to most tertiary courses is based on your selection rank (your ATAR + any applicable adjustments). Most universities also use other criteria when selecting students (eg a personal statement, a questionnaire, a portfolio of work, an audition, an interview or a test).

ATAR Myths Busted
HSC students hear a lot of confusing messages about the ATAR, so UAC’s ATAR expert, Dr Helen Tam, has busted the top 5 myths.
