Religious Education in a Catholic school is far more than Religion lessons. The “education” of students about the Catholic faith integrates a variety of learning opportunities which are all grounded in the teachings of Jesus.
IMMERSION
During the recent school holidays a group of eleven Yr 10 and Yr 11 students, accompanied by Mr Marshall and Ms Fox, participated in a 10 day Immersion experience to Darwin, Tiwi Islands and Kakadu. The Immersion was an opportunity for those attending to "immerse" themselves in Aboriginal culture and to engage in developing an understanding of a worldview from the perspective of an Aboriginal person. The students were outstanding ambassadors of St John’s and actively engaged at a deep level in all the activities, learning modules and experiences provided during the 10 days.
STUDIES OF RELIGION
Year 11 students this term have begun the HSC Studies of Religion Course. It is timely, given the devastating conflict currently present in Israel and Palestine, that students undertaking the 2 unit course will have the opportunity to study various modules which will increase their understanding of the complex situation in this highly religious part of the world. Students will study Holocaust Theology and will also investigate the work undertaken by Islam and Christianity in working towards world peace. At this point of time we pray as a community that the human dignity of all people is respected by all involved in the conflict and that a peaceful solution is found to end this war forever.
SENIOR RETREAT
This week students from Year 11 participated in the Senior Retreat. The retreat this year was held at a new location - The Tops Conference Centre which is located in the northern part of the Illawarra at Stanwell Tops. Unlike a camp, the retreat is an opportunity to push the pause button on their busy lives, and spend time reflecting about who they are, how they relate to others and to develop a deeper understanding of their own individual spirituality. The retreat provides a valuable learning experience which also aims to assist students to recalibrate their lives as they undertake the final year of secondary education.
CATHOLIC MISSION MONTH AND VINNIES
Over the first four weeks of this term, social justice initiatives will focus on the work of Catholic Mission here in Australia and the final six weeks will focus on the Christmas Hampers which will be distributed by Vinnies to families in need across the Shoalhaven.

SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM 2023
A brief note to inform parents/guardians and students about the Sacramental Program
running this year at St John’s.
Any students that would like to be baptised into the Catholic faith or receive the Sacraments
of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion or Confirmation, are invited to participate in the
Sacramental program that will be running during the year and in school time.
