MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS
SDIA54.jpg

On Tuesday 19th November the school community paid tribute to the young men in our community as we recognised International Men’s Day. The recognition of this day was led by a motivated group of year 9 students who wanted to bring awareness to an often-overlooked issue: the mental health of our teenage males. St John's students and staff were able to show their support by wearing blue hair ribbons and blue socks. Through a sausage sizzle and donations over $250 was raised for 'Beyond Blue'.

Adolescence is a time of significant change, and for many young males, it can come with unique challenges. Research shows that teenage boys may be less likely to seek help for mental health concerns, often due to societal pressures to "tough it out." However, understanding and addressing their mental health needs is vital for their long-term well-being.

Recognising the Signs

Parents play a crucial role in noticing when their adolescent son may be struggling. Here are some common signs that might indicate your son needs support:

  • Withdrawal: Avoiding friends, family, or previously enjoyed activities.
  • Mood changes: Persistent sadness, irritability, or anger.
  • Academic struggles: A noticeable drop in school performance or motivation.
  • Physical symptoms: Complaints of headaches, stomachaches, or other unexplained physical issues.
  • Risk-taking behaviour: Experimentation with substances or engaging in unsafe activities.

If you notice these signs, it’s important to approach the situation with care and open communication. Let your son know that it’s okay to talk about his feelings and that seeking help is a sign of strength.

Taking Action

Here are some steps you can take to support your son’s mental health:

  1. Start a conversation: Create a safe space for your son to share his thoughts without fear of judgment.
  2. Encourage professional support: Help him access a counsellor, psychologist, or GP experienced in adolescent mental health.
  3. Promote healthy habits: Encourage physical activity, balanced nutrition, and regular sleep to support emotional well-being.
  4. Stay informed: Learn about mental health to better understand and support your child.

Helpful Resources for Parents in Australia

The following websites offer excellent resources and support for parents navigating adolescent mental health:

  • Kids Helpline: Provides 24/7 free counselling for young people aged 5-25. They also offer advice for parents.
  • Headspace: A national youth mental health foundation providing early intervention services for 12-25-year-olds.
  • Beyond Blue: Offers resources and a 24/7 support line to help people understand and manage mental health challenges.
  • ReachOut Parents: Tailored advice and resources to support parents of teenagers.
  • Black Dog Institute: Evidence-based tools and programs to support mental health and well-being.
  • MensLine Australia: A 24/7 support service for men, with resources specific to parenting and mental health.

As we celebrate the positive role men and boys play in our lives, let’s also commit to nurturing their mental health. By creating supportive environments and promoting open conversations, we can help our teenage sons thrive now and in the future.
