GIRLS ABORIGINAL SPIRITUALITY DAY

On Thursday the 21st of November, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and dance troupe were involved in our Girls Spirituality Day which was conducted by Aunty Chris Finney, Aunty Kate Nye and Aunty Elizabeth Luland. The purpose of this day was to reflect on the importance of women and culture.

We started the day with a smoking ceremony to cleanse and walk in the footsteps of our ancestors, followed by a welcome to Country. Students understood the meaning of the sacred space and how it tells a story of life, morals, culture and prayer. Students were invited to come forth to connect the elements of mother earth and feel the earth, water and oil. The ceremony reminded everyone of when they were born and the old ways of our peoples and the journey of spirit.

We were privileged to have Elizabeth conduct a dance workshop which taught the girls the movements of the black cockatoo and the story of the local area. It was rewarding to see the resilience and discipline shown by the girls throughout each of the different dance stages.

We ended the day with a deep meditation and spiritual reflection which focused on the spiritual bond Aboriginal people have with the land and how we can include culture into our own lives to be the best versions of ourselves. It was an eye-opening experience for staff and students and a day filled with lots of positivity, smiles and self reflection.
