NEWS FROM GOOROON -

WAMINDA PROGRAM

On Thursday 5th December Gooroon were fortunate to host staff from Waminda to run some health and wellbeing programs with our Aboriginal students.

St John’s has a long running relationship with Waminda as an important Women’s organisation within the Shoalhaven community. They have always supported our work in the school by coming in and delivering important programs.

Students were taken through a mindful art activity and the importance of stories and communication within artwork was highlighted with a yarn afterwards. Everyone was given the chance to explain the details represented in their art to the group.

After the artwork and a feed it was time to dance. Aunty Betty along with Uncle Drew as song man demonstrated some dances and the girls were then able to jump in and have a go. This was a lot of fun with everyone getting involved.

For the first time in our long history with Waminda, with the expansion of the organisation into men’s business, we had male students participating in the programs delivered. The boys troupe were very excited to have the chance to dance under Uncle Drew’s guidance and they did not disappoint, showing off their skills and impressing everyone with their knowledge of local dances.

Moving forward we hope to foster a long relationship for our male students in parallel with the fantastic work already happening with our girls. This continues the strong connection of St John’s with community and ensures our students have valuable opportunities to access culture and learn from local knowledge holders.

FOOTPRINTS ON COUNTRY - GREENFIELDS BEACH

On Friday, 13th December, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, along with the Gooroon staff, gathered to celebrate the end of the year at Greenfields Beach in Vincentia.

Upon arrival, everyone enjoyed some fun on the beach, playing soccer, touch football, and building sandcastles, while others learnt some weaving skills with Aunty Chris. A delicious lunch was provided, followed by an insightful Bush Tucker walk with Uncle Archie in the afternoon. Before heading home, we took one last stroll along the beach and dipped our feet in the cool, refreshing waters.

This event offered a wonderful opportunity to connect with our beautiful Country and strengthen the bond between our dedicated Aboriginal Education Assistants (AEAs) and the students who bring so much joy and success to their educational journey.

We wish all our students and their families a joyful and restful festive season.
