DUKE OF EDINBURGH - ADVENTUROUS JOURNEY

On Wednesday 26 February, 18 students, accompanied by Ms. Semmens and Mr. Wilson, embarked on our Duke of Edinburgh adventurous journey. We traveled by bus to Tallowa Dam, where our three-day, two-night expedition began. After paddling for just over 4 km, we paused for lunch and a refreshing swim before continuing approximately 5 km to our campsite.

The first afternoon and evening was spent setting up camp, discovering multiple cold waterholes, fishing, preparing dinner, and gathering around the campfire. Later, Mr. Wilson led most of the group on a mesmerizing night paddle, where they rafted together and admired the star-lit sky from the water.

The second day commenced with breakfast and the packing of barrels containing our essentials for the day. We set off in our canoes, making occasional stops to appreciate the scenery before arriving at a small bank within sight of the rapids. Shortly after, we returned to a larger bank, where we cooked lunch and took another swim before paddling back to camp.

The second evening was a favorite for many. We enjoyed swimming in both the dam and the waterhole, fishing, preparing our meals, and playing games around the campfire, including rounds of "Celebrity Heads." The night concluded with some more stargazing.

On our final morning, we packed up our campsite, ensuring we left no trace behind, and loaded our barrels onto the canoes. We paddled approximately 6 km before making one last stop for lunch and a swim. With only about 3 km remaining, we powered through the final stretch, rowing back to where our adventure had begun.

All in all, the journey was filled with new experiences, valuable lessons, and the opportunity to form deeper connections with peers. The journey also pushed us out of our comfort zones due to the lack of amenities available which was all part of the adventure. Having paddled between 25–30 km in total, the students who participated successfully completed their Bronze or Silver Duke of Edinburgh adventurous journey component. It was a rewarding achievement and definately one to remember.
