PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Dear Parents and Carers,

On the 9th of May, a dedicated group of St John’s teachers and students trekked up to Kiama to compete in our annual school Athletics Carnival and from all accounts, it was a true celebration of talent, determination, and school spirit. Although this year’s event was limited to competitors only, the energy on the field was electric. Students gave their all in every event, from sprints and relays to high jump and discus, proudly representing their houses and setting new personal bests.

While we missed the cheers and support of the wider school community, we’re actively exploring ways to bring the carnival back as a full school-wide event, making this celebration of athleticism and school spirit accessible to all once again. A huge congratulations to all our athletes—you made us proud! And to our community: thank you for your continued support. We can’t wait to cheer together again soon.

On 12th May, the Parents & Friends Association met to discuss the academic, wellbeing, and faith progress of our school. It was fantastic to meet again and discuss with gratitude just how far we’ve come and excitement for what lies ahead. While we trialed a recording and potential streaming of the event, technical difficulties meant that the recording was unfortunately not up to standard. We will review this prior to our next meeting and again look at offering opportunities for all to engage especially those hampered by distance.

Among the highlights were several new ventures aimed at enhancing our physical facilities:

  • Playground Landscaping: Minor upgrades will refresh and revitalise outdoor areas while maintaining the beautiful natural landscape that carries throughout our school.
  • New Undercover COLA Area: The construction of a large, sheltered space is due to start later this term and will complement our fitness gym and provide additional coverage for students during all weather conditions.
  • Bathroom Upgrades: Hopefully by the end of the year, major refurbishment and demolition work will transform our existing bathrooms into single-use stalls with external basins, improving both privacy and hygiene. In addition to this, a new build on the oval will also support student’s greater access to bathrooms and minimise congestion.

In Week 5, our Year 10 students will begin their subject selection process for senior study. It’s a privilege to offer such a wide range of choices, but it’s essential to follow the principle of “right course, right student, right outcome.” When students choose subjects aligned with their interests and abilities, they unlock incredible opportunities. However, selecting based on peer influence or perceived prestige can lead to disengagement and underperformance. We encourage all students and families to engage in open conversations with teachers, ask thoughtful questions, and work in partnership to ensure the best outcomes for every learner.

The Year 10 2025 / Year 11 2026 Subject Selection Informatiion Evening will be held on Thursday 5 June at 5.30pm in the school hall and is compulsory for all students and their parents/carers to attend.

Finally, we continue to be impressed by the engagement and focus of our students in Years 7–12. This commitment to learning has led to a noticeable decrease in disruptive behaviours in the classroom. While there’s always room for growth, we want to celebrate the many students who embody what it means to be a St John’s student—respectful, curious, and committed to excellence.

Warm regards
