Life Maps: Why do you need one?

Life_Map.jpg

Most of us don’t live life according to a map. We float from one thing to another, which is great, because it gives us the flexibility to go with the flow and make the most of opportunities. There is, however, a downside to making things up as you go. For more, go to the link attached.

Navy Aviation Prospect Scheme - NAPS Quicklook

Last week, 19 students took part in the Naval Aviation Prospect Scheme (NAPS) Quicklook, a unique opportunity designed to provide an engaging overview of aviation careers within the Australian Defence Force. Hosted at HMAS Albatross, students were welcomed onto one of the Navy’s largest and most dynamic aviation bases.

The visit offered students firsthand insight into a wide variety of Defence career pathways — from helicopter pilots and technicians to aviation mechanics and roles in unmanned aerial systems (drones). Students were particularly fascinated by the behind-the-scenes look at how these operations are supported and the teamwork required to maintain high safety and performance standards.

Adding to the experience, students enjoyed lunch at the Sailor’s Mess, getting a real taste of life on base.

This immersive experience not only broadened students' career horizons but also highlighted the exciting opportunities and structured pathways available through Defence.

STUDENTS REPORT ON THE DAY

The day started with a bus ride to HMAS Albatross which started with the 723 squadron pilots to observe the EC125 training helicopters where we got a deep insight into how they operate and the process of becoming a pilot. We then progressed to the 808 squadron which showed us operation at sea and the roles of jobs within the fleet air arm. We were fortunate enough to talk to a seaman recruit about her enrolment process, her training and her experience in working throughout the navy. Then we proceeded to the Sikorsky SH60R hangers within 808 that allowed us to get a detailed insight to the maintenance roles that keep these helicopters flying. We also got an insight into their systems including their submarine warfare capabilities. After that we were shown the  equipment necessary for Navy pilots to succeed in flight missions. We were fortunate enough to be able to put on some  of the equipment including the helmet, pilot's vest and life raft pack which gives pilots everything they need to recover from a major crash. The equipment was quite heavy, with the air crewman vest weighing 15kg and an additional 5kg for the life raft. After that it was lunch time. We arrived at the Junior Sailors Mess where a Moroccan themed lunch awaited us. After a meal of Moroccan foods and a break in the games room we proceeded to 822X squadron where we learnt about the ScanEagle and S-100 drones. Once we were done, it was time to pack it up for the day and head back to school. Overall, the day spent at Albatross was satisfactory and  gave us a new experience dealing with the aviation department of the Navy.

Building Futures: Trade Readiness Sessions

Trade_Readiness_Construction_Electrical_5_.jpg
From Tuesday, 20 May to Thursday, 22 May, a group of Year 10 students took part in a three-day Trade Readiness Session, gaining valuable insight into the construction and electrical trades.

Throughout the program, students were actively involved in hands-on activities, including practical electrical tasks and building their own footstool — experiences that sparked interest and developed basic trade skills.

Highlights included guest presentations from Matthew Simms, owner of Simmark, a local electrical company working across solar, air conditioning, and refrigeration, and Jordan Peters, Director of Hotondo Homes Nowra. Both guests shared their career journeys and gave students clear advice should they choose to follow in their footsteps. Their insights helped students understand what employers are really looking for in an apprentice.

In today’s competitive job market, the sessions offered students a clearer picture of how to stand out in an application, make a strong impression, and prepare for life in a trade.

A big thank you to REIP and Fusion for providing this fantastic opportunity to our students at St John the Evangelist Catholic High School.

UAC - Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS)

Applications Close 5 September

The Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) is one way institutions make early offers of undergraduate admission to Year 12 students. They do this by using criteria other than (or in addition to) the ATAR. Each institution has its own policy for determining SRS eligibility and making offers. For example, you may also

have to submit an EAS application institution-defined dates, or attend a school in a particular region. SRS is not available for all courses. The institution-specific SRS criteria detail any exceptions.
