Why work experience matters for your future

Work_experience.jpg

Choosing a career path can feel overwhelming when you’re making decisions based on limited information. You might have strong academic interests or exciting ideas about certain industries, but how do you know if those translate into careers you’ll actually enjoy? The answer lies in getting real-world experience before committing to a future direction – and that’s where work experience comes in.

Work experience bridges the gap between theory and reality, giving you insights that no amount of research can provide. It’s your chance to test assumptions, explore different environments, and discover what truly motivates you.

RECENT EVENTS

UOW Nursing and Health Careers Workshop

On Thursday, 19th June, a group of enthusiastic Year 10–12 students attended the Nursing & Health Careers Workshop at the UOW Shoalhaven Campus, hosted by RIEP in partnership with the University of Wollongong.

The event offered a fantastic opportunity for students seriously considering a future in healthcare. Across the sessions, students showed great participation, asked thoughtful questions, and engaged positively with industry professionals to better understand the variety of roles and pathways available.

The workshop featured interactive hands-on activities in Nursing and Exercise Science, giving students a fun and practical taste of what these careers involve. The expo area was well-represented, with professionals from sectors such as Aged Care, Disability Support, and Occupational Health available to chat directly with students and share real-world insights.

Pathways into healthcare were clearly explained, and students left the workshop with valuable information—not only about career options but also about the opportunities available through UOW in the health field. It was a highly informative and engaging day that helped inspire the next generation of health professionals.

UOW: Year 10 Subject Selection and Year 12 Early Admission Information Sessions

This term, students across Years 10 and 12 took part in two valuable sessions delivered by the University of Wollongong, one focused on Year 10 subject selection and the other on Year 12 Early Admission.

Both sessions were well attended, with students engaging thoughtfully and asking excellent questions. The Year 10 group left feeling more informed and confident about their subject choices and how these may align with future university pathways.

The Year 12 Early Admission session helped clarify the application process, particularly how to respond to the written questions required as part of their application. Students were given practical tips and guidance on how to meet faculty-specific criteria, helping them feel better prepared and more confident in taking the next step.

It was a worthwhile and empowering experience for all who attended, and a great opportunity to connect directly with UOW staff and gain insight into the world of university.

If you need assistance with the application process, please see Ms Arenas.

UAC - Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS)

Applications Close 5 September

The Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) is one way institutions make early offers of undergraduate admission to Year 12 students. They do this by using criteria other than (or in addition to) the ATAR. Each institution has its own policy for determining SRS eligibility and making offers. For example, you may also

have to submit an EAS application institution-defined dates, or attend a school in a particular region. SRS is not available for all courses. The institution-specific SRS criteria detail any exceptions.
