GOOROON NEWS
FOOTPRINTS ON COUNTRY
On Thursday 26 September, Gooroon held a joint excursion with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from St Michael’s. The purpose of the excursion was to provide our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with a cultural learning experience on country.

Aunty Christine Campbell sought advice from Aunty Grace and an excursion was organised to Jerrinja Country at Currarong. Aunty Chrissy Locke led a wonderful walk to Whale Point stopping along the way to point out and describe important bush tucker and medicinal plants.
She also showed students the amazing 1900 year old rock shelter used by the ancestors of the Jerrinja people.

Uncle Mark Mongta and Aunty Grace shared their knowledge of tools, weapons and local culture and Uncle Mark explored the beach and rock pools with the students. Aunty Jo Coleman manned the BBQ and kept everyone well fed and did much of the organisation to ensure everyone arrived and returned safely.

Thanks to Aunty Vanessa, Aunty Marion, Aunty Jody, Uncle Leland and Mrs Frawley who assisted on the day. Sincere thanks also to Cory Carter and the St John’s P&F for funding our wonderful lunch. We look forward to planning more Footprints On Country experiences in 2020.
