On Thursday 7March 2019, the St. John’s community officially launched the school social justice program. Representatives of Johnnies Action Group (JAG), the Peace and ‘Xceptance’ (PAX) group, Bully Busters and Vinnies Youth all delivered presentations at the Assembly, highlighting not only the wonderful initiatives that each group participates in, but also the energy, enthusiasm and teamwork of their student members. A particular highlight was Lucian D’Hudson’s leading of ‘JAG Storytime’, in which he told the story of a tiny hummingbird doing its part to protect its home from an overwhelming forest fire. The student body most definitely connected with the moral of the tale, that being the practical and symbolic importance of the ‘little person’, or the ‘one’, in the face of adversity. The relevance of this message to social justice, to making a difference in the lives of others, and to giving to those in need, was clear for all to see.

It was also especially pleasing to see so many students attend the ‘O-week’ style booths at lunchtime on Thursday, and all social justice groups reported a great deal of interest from current and new members. Every student is invited to join a social justice group, and to contribute their individual talents and voice to their chosen group’s ‘mission’ to identify and respond to the needs of society – locally, regionally, and even globally. Students should pay close attention to the Daily Notices for specific group meeting locations and times.

Project Compassion is now also in full swing at St. John's. Collections will be made every Wednesday during Lent in PALS. We urge you to wholeheartedly support Caritas Australia in this appeal, as all monies donated will go directly to helping those most in need in our world.
