WHERE THE HELL IS GOD?
Some time ago I attended a presentation by Fr Richard Leonard, a Jesuit Priest. I was recently reminded of his book 'Where the hell is God?’ This book looks at the question of where God is in our lives in the really tough times and indeed, why he has let them happen in the first place. Famines, droughts, infant death, war and the pain and suffering for our elderly are things that people often question as to - why does God allow these things to happen? The book was written as a response to Fr Richards’s reflections on how he, and his family, has responded to the crisis of his then 28-year-old sister becoming a quadriplegic. His sister, who as a trained nurse, and who spent more than three years as a volunteer working in Calcutta with Mother Theresa in the Hospital of the Dying and then later in the Northern Territory in a remote aboriginal settlement. He asked where was God in this situation? How could God let this happen to such aperson? Why her?
In our lives we have experiences that challenge our thinking and shift our balance of thought, they leave an entrenched feeling that our previous 'way' was not quite enough or was out of sync. In essence these experiences change us and challenge our core beliefs.
It might be good to read Harry Potter or Twilight or other books for entertainment but I recommend that we also search for some literature that challenges our thinking. This book leads us through an examination of our own beliefs and expectations for God. Why does God allow innocent infants to die in their cots? It leads us to reflect on our own expectations of our God and through this to an examination of our relationship with our God.
So, how could God let this happen to Fr Richard’s sister? In the end Fr Richard realised that when he sat in the hospital crying, with his mother, at his sisters bed, God was there weeping beside them. God is beside all of us in the terrible and tough times. Are we too busy and self absorbed to notice the ‘God’ moments, the times of grace and encounter? We certainly will miss them if we are not open to recognize them.
I see God moments regularly at school. The way the students treat each other, the
care for those less able, the interactions with Staff. I wish all good luck on their
search.
A big thank you to those students and families that attended the youth mass at 5.00pm on Sunday.
The church was three quarters full and had a lovely feel and atmosphere. Fr Pat
presided and spoke beautifully to the Gospel reading. The youth Mass occurs on the
third Sunday of the month – all are welcome.
Have you ever travelled to a big city, and stopped, and noticed how much concrete,
glass and metal surrounds us there? Soon the sense of the lack of nature enters
your thinking. Modern cities have many more green spaces than some of the older
ones to counter this.
In his message for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation on 1 September
2023, Pope Francis calls us to a change of heart and “the renewal of our relationship
with creation so that we no longer see it as an object to be exploited but cherish it
instead as a sacred gift from our Creator.” Pope Francis encourages us to avoid
waste and to promote practices that promote care for our environment and the
earth’s resources for future generations.
At St John’s we have a proud tradition of environmental action. Currently our
environmental group are working on the staff garden beds, reducing plastic in the
canteen, composting, the sustainability garden and a movie night to promote the
protection of environmental species.

RECENT EVENTS
On Thursday, August 17, Year 10 students participated in the second day of the Naval Aviation Prospect Scheme, marking a significant step in their educational journey. The day was dedicated to enhancing students' collaborative and leadership abilities through a series of challenges. The event proved to be a fun and highly successful way of developing teamwork skills, as students progressively grew at ease with their peers, pooling their talents effectively to overcome challenges. The afternoon consisted of enlightening presentations, a shared lunch with aircrew, maintainers, and Defence Force Recruiting personnel. This interaction not only provided valuable insights into the world of naval aviation but also left a lasting impression on the attendees. Notably, the experience fostered an increased sense of readiness and self-assurance among the students when it comes to compiling a compelling Resume and Cover Letter. The students' remarkable engagement and accomplishments during the event deserve commendation for their promising development.

UAC Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS)
Applications Close 18 September
The Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) is one way institutions make early offers of undergraduate admission to Year 12 students. They do this by using criteria other than (or in addition to) the ATAR.
Each institution has its own policy for determining SRS eligibility and making offers. For example, you may also have to submit an EAS application institution-defined dates, or attend a school in a particular region.
SRS is not available for all courses. The institution-specific SRS criteria detail any exceptions.
https://www.uac.edu.au/future-applicants/scholarships-and-schemes/schools-recommendation-schemes
Have a back-up plan: Pathways to Uni
UAC always recommends that, when you choose your course preferences, you include a 'back-up' course; that is, a course you are confident you'll be offered a place in and will be happy to study if you miss out on offers for your higher preferences. For example, you could include a diploma course in a similar area of study as your preferred degree course. You could then use your diploma studies as a stepping stone to the degree: you may even be able to move straight into second year. Pathways to uni.

UAC Let's Chat - Applying to the Schools Recommendation Scheme
6 September
While the ATAR is still the main selection tool used by most universities, there are other ways for you to show that you’re ready to succeed at uni. Many institutions have one or more early offer schemes for Year 12 students. Through these schemes, institutions assess you using criteria other than (or in addition to) your ATAR.
We'll give you an overview of the Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) and discuss:
- how to apply
- whether you're guaranteed early entry if you apply
- other universities' direct early entry schemes
- how many early entry schemes you can apply for.

UAC Career mapping: where to after school?
Many students are uncertain about their next steps after Year 12. But – as Phillip Williamson, Head Teacher Careers for the NSW Government’s Educational Pathways Program, writes – it’s vital to go easy on yourself, self-reflect and do your research. Here are Williamson’s practical tips for starting your career journey. The most important thing, he advises, is to focus on your direction, not your destination.

MILTON PARISH
Dear parents and guardians of Year 7 students, my name is Mrs Abbey Simis (previously known as Miss Baker) and I am thrilled to introduce myself as the acting Year 7 Coordinator. It is with great enthusiasm that I embark on this journey to work alongside you and the students until Mrs Kate Jennings returns from maternity leave in 2024. My primary goal is to create a nurturing and inspiring environment where each student can flourish and achieve their full potential.
Year 7 students have well and truly crossed the halfway point of their first year in high school and it is an opportune time to reflect on the challenges they’ve overcome, the progress they’ve made and the exciting opportunities that await them.
In the short time I have been the coordinator of Year 7, I have been impressed with the large number of students who are actively involved in social justice groups, sporting teams, faith based initiatives and extracurricular activities. In recent weeks in particular, there has been…
- The Under 13’s Boy Rugby League Team - travelling to Sydney on Thursday the 17th of August to play in the finals and were crowned the NSW Country Champions! They also placed second overall in the entire state! Well done boys!
- Taj Thomas who was awarded the 12 Years Age Champion at the Diocesan Athletics Carnival!
- The Girls 7/8 Netball Team and the Boys 7/8 Netball Team who represented the school with pride at recent carnival days
- The Junior AFL side - who came away with many wins at the recent gala day
- Students who attended the recent Youth Mass at St Michael’s
- Many Yr 7 students who are donating items to the Vinnies Winter Appeal.
- And the Yr 7 Rock Band who I hear is performing in front of the school very soon!
- Tiarn Schell who competed at the Interschools Equestrian Event with some outstanding results.

MPOWER ME DAY 14 / 15 SEPTEMBER
The Year 8 MPower Me is a two day pastoral event aiming to build the self-esteem and confidence of Year 8 students by connecting them through friendship and structured activities to create a cohesive and friendly school community.
Young people face many pressures such as, conflict, stress, bullying and low self-esteem, that require a number of learnable skills such as assertiveness, reflectivity, self-awareness, empathy, problem solving and conflict resolution. St John’s, with its school motto the challenge to live out PAX CHRISTI – the Peace of Christ, endeavours to improve the physical, mental and social wellbeing of young people to help them manage these pressures in a positive way.
Sessions will focus on right & respectful relationships, self-representation, belonging and connection and self-talk. Students will also participate in activities including team building, bushwalking and Box ‘N’ Breathe.
This is a highlight of the year for Year 8 students at St Johns in which wonderful memories and connections are formed through shared experiences and challenges.
Mr Zac Ellul is busy coordinating events for MPower Me day and the staff involved are looking forward to sharing the experiences and developing our connections with Year 8 students and having fun!!!
On the 22nd and 23rd of August year 8 participated in a STEM day. Throughout the day the classes participated in three activities: plane building, earthquake simulator spaghetti towers and catapult construction. These two days were organised by the science department along with some help from senior students. These activities all required components of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Our highlights were the catapult construction where we built our own catapults that launched a tennis ball across the gym. All the groups had to work together to problem-solve. Some groups liked destroying their models and other groups had fun seeing their designs come to life. The spaghetti towers were really challenging and some groups' towers didn’t make it far, whilst others survived the earthquake and weight challenges. It took a lot of trial and error to make the planes have stability whilst in the air, but everyone loved seeing how high their planes flew. Overall it was a really fun, educational and entertaining day that everyone enjoyed. Thank you to the Science department who made this experience possible.

Year 11 PDHPE HIKE
Preparation for the hike had been in motion for weeks. Groups were put together, food started being packed, and necessary skills were learned, the only thing left to do was actually start walking. Thursday the 3rd of August started with a wave full of excitement and nervousness, but the bus came around and suddenly we were on our way. On the bus, we were divided into two groups, it was designated that one group would start at Kioloa and the other to start at East Lynne, the exact track still yet unknown.
After the hour-and-a-half trip, the first group left the comfort of the air-conditioning, had a quick lunch break and the 13.5km walk in the heat of the sweltering winter began. Right along the south coast, the walk took us down to every beach available with a few favourites being Pretty Beach and Merry Beach. About 4 hours later, the rolling sand of Pebbly Beach made an appearance. Starting at East Lyne, the second group followed many sheltered fire trials that edged through Murramarang National Park, coming to the end of the 11km walk with a 3km stretch of bush-bashing, climbing under and over trees, and problem-solving a river crossing. Eventually, both groups met at Pebbly Beach.
The afternoon was spent setting up camp, and the night was filled with stargazing, a full moon, laughter, card games and damper kindly prepared by the teachers. The next day started early at 6:30 am, the camp was packed up and the groups swapped walks with group one now walking to East Lynee and Group 2 walking to Kioloa.
Overall the hike was one of the most positive experiences, being a very big highlight of Year 11 PDHPE. We would like that thank Mrs Gray, Mrs Isemonger, Mrs Semmens and Mr Higgins for all the preparation for planning this hike and for making it one of the most enjoyable experiences this year!

YEAR 11 SLR
Monday? More like FUNDAY! Every Monday both Year 11 SLR classes go head to head in fitness based challenge activities. Push-up, ball-squat and sit-up challenges are some of the many activities Mr Leishman’s and Mr Vaughan’s classes complete in. These intense challenges usually finish with Mr Vaughans class winning thanks to his Drill Sergeant like training.

During the double SLR periods, classes take a trip to the Pumpin Iron gym. Here, students complete workouts which have been created by themselves. These workouts vary greatly thanks to the wide variety of equipment available at Pumpin Iron; large cardio rooms full of machines, boxing equipment and the main weights room are all of great utility. Students are asked questions regarding safety and correct form during their workouts, in relation to the resistance training program assessment task for this term. Student engagement is excellent and the classes of SLR thoroughly enjoy this activity.

YEAR 9 CHILD STUDIES
I had the opportunity to bring the infant home for the evening on August 8. Despite the fact that I had to wake up 12 times, it was a quite wonderful experience. It was a long night, and having to go to school the following day was challenging. Even though I had to give the baby back the next morning, I really wanted to keep it. Without a doubt I would definitely do this again.

The baby for me was an amazing opportunity. It taught me that babies aren’t just cute and cuddly, they need patience and responsibility.
Ashlynn Crangle
Having the mechanical baby overnight for me was an educational experience. It showed me that when a baby cries you have to figure out what they want and how long it takes for them to settle. Overall, I had a fun time.
Miriam Hutchinson
In child studies you have a chance to get an electronic simulator baby ( approx 4 months old) you get this baby for one night in year nine then in year ten you get this baby for the WHOLE weekend. This is a great experience because you have a chance to see what it’s like to have a baby. The things that you need to do with the baby is stop it from crying and you will also need to have the baby with you at all times because it will not stop crying until you put the right key in the babies back from doing all types of care including burping, feeding, attention, nappy change and this gives you the opportunity to learn about the routines and duty of care for a baby. Having this baby was a lot of fun because you get a great understanding of on why parents are sleep deprived and you get the understanding of what it’s like to have a baby.
Jasmine Barber
For us the baby was comforting to hold and we enjoyed the experience. The baby has taught us how difficult it can be to look after young ones.

YEAR 10 CHILD STUDIES
Year 10 Child studies have also been engaging with the simulator baby experience. The students have been responsible for caring for their babies for three consecutive nights over the weekend.
Some quotes from the students include : ‘I gained my first wrinkle from this experience’, ‘it was a stressful but rewarding experience’ and ‘babies are hard work’. This is a great insight into caring for a newborn for these students.
Students are also in the process of creating their own story book which they will be printing off and gifting to some special little people. They have been engaging with a range of children's literature and enjoyed a visit to our school library and a talk with Mrs Brodie about some key concepts in writing children's story books.
BUSHCRAFT
YEAR 9
Bushcraft is a great way to learn and improve skills that are very useful. We have been learning about how to cook on trangias and set up sleeping tarps in preparation for our overnight trip in week 8. We have learnt about many useful techniques to navigate yourself in and out of school using a map and compass. We loved the rogaining, it was so fantastically good.

YEAR 10 EXPEDITION
Despite all the challenges we faced on hiking expedition, we still put smiles on our faces when we tripped over logs and slipped down. We learnt great teamwork skills, an example is when we were standing/climbing in an arms width cliff passing our food and drink bottles through the hands of all 26 students that attended the overnight expedition, which led to the most beautiful view of all the mountains and valleys in that area. Our teachers led us well through the bush always shouting out words of encouragement and bringing us together to allow us to connect with one another. As the sun went down we found ourselves still breaking branches and snapping spikey bushes. We watched the stars appear in the clear night sky while enjoying the company of a helicopter 20 feet above us. As we met with emergency crews all our faces were brightened and we just couldn't wait to finally arrive at our campsite. Most of us were so cold, we couldn't even feel the prickles that covered our legs. A highlight of the trip sitting around the nice warm fire whilst enjoying each other's company and celebrating getting through the day. Overall the struggles made all of us individuals stronger than ever. Massive shoutout and thanks to Mr Higgins and Miss Semens for putting together this trip.

During both Term 2 & Term 3 in Bushcraft we have been studying and being involved with Rockcraft. We engaged in practical sessions, including a day at the Indoor Climb South Coast facility in Huskisson. We learnt about different knots, techniques of climbing and how to safely belay someone. Overall, Rockcraft has helped us challenge ourselves, overcome obstacles and develop positive attributes and skills.

ST JOHN'S NEW BUS
P&F COMMITTEE
Did you know that there are over 122,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in Australia? Homelessness is not exclusive to living on the streets. It also includes living in your car and couch surfing. These conditions are extremely difficult to live in, especially during winter.
To support homelessness awareness and people in need, vinnies is putting together food and toiletry packs to be donated to people in need. We ask every one of you to bring in items to support this cause.
This includes packs of sultanas, popcorn, muesli bars, dip its, juice boxes and toothpaste, toothbrush, soap , sanitary items, shampoo, combs, etc. The list is open for all staff and students to bring in items to make these packs possible.
Fortunately, the Saint Vincent de Paul society around Wollongong and Nowra has food vans to ensure that these people get a warm dinner a couple of times a week. It is here that our snack packs and toiletry packs will get handed out to make life a little easier for those doing it tough this winter.
Even if its just throwing in an extra box of muesli bars while doing the shopping, your support will be greatly appreciated. Any donations can be left in the student foyer.
Donations are being taken until Friday 1 September. So please get behind this worthy cause.
Thank you.

GROWING GOOD MEN FATHER AND SON WEEKEND
FATHER AND TEENAGE SON WEEKEND -20 TO 22 OCTOBER 2023 CATARACT SCOUT CAMP, APPIN
One of the most important influences in the lives of men is the relationship they had with their father or significant father figure. The encouragement and affirmation that this relationship could, and should , provide, is a key ingredient for how young men view themselves and embrace their gifts as they take their place in the world. Don't miss this life-changing father and son weekend! Spots are limited to just 25 fathers with sons aged between 12 and 16 years.
This a unique opportunity for dads and their sons to embark on a quest of discovery with Robert Falzon and the team from menALIVE.
