Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome back to Term 4. Where has this year gone. Who would think that it is only two months until Christmas. I always enjoy the noise of the start of a school term. Firstly in the Staffroom as the Staff reconnect after the holiday break and then in the playground where the talk, handball, hugs, basketball and stories bring life to the school.
HSC COMMENCEMENT
We wish the Year 12 students all the very best as they sit their HSC exams. The hard work, stress and effort will be tested and pay off for most students. We pray that they simply do their best.
Please pray the following prayer for them:
Lord,
As our students in our diocese commence their HSC exams, we thank you that their value is not based on their performance, but on your great love for them.
Come Holy Spirit, into their hearts so that they can walk through this time together.
Help them, not only with this test, but the many tests of life that are sure to come their way.
As they take this exam, help them to recall everything they have studied and be gracious
with what they have overlooked.
Remove their anxiety, and help them to remain focused and calm, confident in the facts and in their ability, and firm in the knowledge, that no matter what happens today you are there with them, always.
Pax Christi ….. peace of Christ
St Francis …… pray for us
FEAST DAY FOR ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI
The /Peace Prayer, inspired by St Francis of Assisi is a key prayer at St John’s and supports our core values. On 4 October 2023 we celebrated the Feast Day for St Francis of Assisi. A man who recognised the gift of “savouring”.
St Francis had a strong sense of God’s presence and calling. There were three instances in his life where he sensed God instructing him to “repair my Church.” Initially, he perceived that this was a literal instruction and he began to repair the dilapidated church at San Damiano.
God however continued to communicate with St Francis and over time he came to realise that this repair was in relation to spiritual matters. There are so many ways in which St Francis endeavoured to do this. He had a strong desire to walk in the footprints of Jesus and was someone who had a deep love for creation and a heart for the poor.
In many regards, St Francis was ahead of his time in the area of ecological conversion. St Francis saw creation as a gift and as God’s first revelation. He came to see the unique beauty in every aspect of creation and to see the way in which we are inextricably linked.
St Francis prompts us all to savour moments in nature and to see these as sacred moments. It is in these moments that we are able to capture a glimpse of something beyond ourselves and for our hearts to be healed, re-fueled or realigned. There are many practices promoted today that can help us to become more aware of God’s presence and at the same time support our wellbeing. Over the last few years, a practice called “savouring” has gained traction. Savouring is a practice where we deepen our attention and appreciation for moments and the things that surround us (Bryant and Veroff, 2007). This deeper attention and willingness to savour experiences has proven to have an extensive range of positive outcomes. This practice of savouring is one that St Francis lived.
When we are willing to slow down and truly savour all that surrounds us, our hearts open. We appreciate creation more deeply and recognise our shared responsibility to take care of this gift more clearly. Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ provides a beautiful expression of the importance of savouring. “If we approach nature and the environment without…openness to awe and wonder, if we no longer speak the language of fraternity and beauty in our relationship with the world, our attitude will be that of masters, consumers, ruthless exploiters, unable to set limits on their immediate needs. By contrast, if we feel intimately united with all that exists, then sobriety and care will well up spontaneously. (#11)
We learn so much from our Indigenous brothers and sisters who remind us and teach us how to savour, how to deeply listen, and how to care for this world we have been given. And today St Francis of Assisi calls each one of us to savour, to savour creation, moments, and people. What will you savour today?
COMMISSIONING CEREMONY 2024 LEADERS
As elected leaders these students exemplify the leadership qualities that we value in all our young people. They have decided what is important to them and they are prepared to work to make this happen. For Leaders at St John’s this aligns with our school values. Leaders at St John’s value peace and speak up for justice. They value excellence in learning and always do their best and look to the words of Jesus to guide their actions. Leaders at St John’s value the Catholic social teaching of the Dignity of all human persons and get involved to bring about justice and peace and help others to create supportive and rich learning environments.
I encourage not just our new school leadership team but all our young people to use their leadership qualities to make a difference and support others to do so.
It was wonderful to see so many families attend the commissioning ceremony to witness their students receive their badges and take the pledge for their new leadership roles at St John's.

UAC Career mapping: where to after school?
Many students are uncertain about their next steps after Year 12. But – as Phillip Williamson, Head Teacher Careers for the NSW Government’s Educational Pathways Program, writes – it’s vital to go easy on yourself, self-reflect and do your research. Here are Williamson’s practical tips for starting your career journey. The most important thing, he advises, is to focus on your direction, not your destination.
https://www.uac.edu.au/media-centre/news/career-mapping-where-to-after-school
What is the ATAR?
The ATAR is a rank, not a mark.
The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a number between 0.00 and 99.95 that indicates a student’s position relative to all the students in their age group (ie all 16 to 20 year olds in NSW). So, an ATAR of 80.00 means that you are 20 per cent from the top of your age group (not your Year 12 group).
Universities use the ATAR to help them select students for their courses and admission to most tertiary courses is based on your selection rank (your ATAR + any applicable adjustments). Most universities also use other criteria when selecting students (eg a personal statement, a questionnaire, a portfolio of work, an audition, an interview or a test).

YEAR 7 STUDENT REFLECTIONS
I have asked students to reflect on their first year of high school and they happily shared some of their fond memories with me:
Luke Keating - My favourite memory of Yr 7 is being involved in the footy team
Allira Hepburn - A challenging moment from Yr 7 has been the school work, but I overcame it by keeping up with it!
Caiden Green - The funniest moment of Yr 7 was when me and my mate Harper capsized our kayak at camp
Lilly Moore - My favourite moment from Yr 7 was when I broke two school records at the athletics carnival in javelin and discus
Phoenix Wright - A challenging moment from Yr 7 was knowing where my classes were, I eventually remembered them all
Rya Lucas - My favourite memory from Year 7 was Foundation Day. Being able to walk around the school and win fun prizes and compete in fun games. I also enjoyed running my house group's stall and watching students cheer as they won prizes.
I wish all students of Yr 7 a very happy and successful Term
Year 7 Coordinator
Last term Year 8 students took part in Mpower me Day. Over the two days, the activities provided opportunities for students to strengthen connections and challenge themselves both physically and emotionally.
I was very impressed with the positive energy the students brought to each activity ( even in some unseasonably hot weather!!) and their willingness to step outside their comfort zone and embrace the message the various activities provided.
I would like to thank Mr Zac Ellul for the work he put into planning the day and the staff - Mr Elton, Ms Denny, Mrs Renshaw, Mr Stephenson, Mr Kyriacou, Mr Higgins who gave up their valuable time to run the activities and connect with the students. Also, our support staff, Mrs Millington, Mrs Smilie and Mrs Edwards who ensured all students were supported on the day and the staff back at school, who covered lessons so that these staff members were able to attend the day. It was a team effort!
Below is a reflection of the day written by Kate Walker, Emmeline Le, Aidan Smith, Charlotte Hertzberg, Isabella Ngyuen and Bonnie Jennet
MPOWER ME DAY 2023
Introduction/Aidan
Last term in week 9, year 8 participated in the M power me day which was organised by Mr Elull. It was spread across two days which was split into two sections; on campus and off campus and separated by girls and boys.
For the first day, the girls started off campus. The girls all made their way to the bus and sat with their friends, the bus filled with chatter and laughter. They were excited to arrive at Nowra showground.
While on the school grounds the boys all went up to k block and were organised into 4 groups. The boys were looking forward to the fun activities and ready to embrace the challenges.
The second day,the activities were reversed and there was lots of anticipation about the events ahead.
Rock climbing/Emmeline
This was the first activity off campus. The group started off by walking down a rough track with helmets and harnesses to protect ourselves. As we walked down the track, we got to see the beautiful view of the Shoalhaven River. Making it to our Rock Climbing spot, we first learnt the safety rules to rock climbing and that year 10 students would be guiding us along the way as well as making sure we are safe. This activity allowed other students and I to test our courage and confidence capabilities. I personally learnt from this activity to have trust in others so that I would be able to make my way up the rock wall. I enjoyed this rock climbing activity very much. And a big thank you to Mr Higgins, Mr Kyriachou and all the year 10 students that helped us along the way.
Bush walk / Kate
The second activity was the bush walk and Mr Stephenson led us out to Ben’s walk. The group quickly split up into friend groups as we joyfully set out, observing the beautiful surroundings. The walk followed along the shining river, with people stopping every two steps to ask; “Sir, can we take a photo?”. Mr Stephenson reluctantly agreed, allowing for our phones to be quickly filled with amazing memories. The track followed the river, making its way into the forest, where sudden screams were let out at the sight of a huge diamond python. We made our way across the rocky bridge that led us over the beautiful water, violently shaking at every step we took. The conversations as we walked along the path were filled with happiness and jokes.
Initiative Activity / Emmeline
In the initiative activity we did many challenges that pushed our teamwork abilities. Are groups split in half, and we were given different tasks to try and achieve. Afterwards we put the buckets of water we had from the previous tasks to have a water fight which was great in the hot weather.
Chewing the Fat / Charlotte
"Chewing the fat" focused on connecting with our peers, learning new ways to focus and relax our minds, and learning new things about one another. We were asked to bring in an object that was meaningful to us and we had to explain why our item was important to us. This activity made us learn more about each other and our passions. We shared our stories with each other and gained a deeper understanding of each other's values. It was a great way to bring us closer together.
Get over It / Aidan
Back on campus my group of boys and I went to our first activity being “Get over it" which included us building a bridge with limited supplies and having all the boys standing on it and getting squished up, and we ended up playing jenga with the bridge after we ripped it apart. The main message of the “Get over it”activity was to identify your life challenges and the ‘building a bridge’ was symbolic of building a bridge and working together to overcome challenges.
Blast from the past / Kate
“Blast from the past” was an activity led by Miss Renshaw, where we wrote out a script for our future self and went outside to record ourselves reading out the script. This video will be shared with us when we are in Year 12 - which will be interesting (and possibly embarrassing?!) to view.
Box and Breathe/ Isabella
Box and breathe was an amazing on campus activity hosted by Mr. Ellul. It consisted of boxing with a partner, one holding the holding punch pads, and the other with the gloves. We also ran back and forth along the hall. Afterwards, we had to unwind and relax with mindfulness and breathing exercises that helped de-escalate after boxing and running. This activity made us more aware about how our bodies make irrational decisions when escalated and heightened. It taught us how to be more mindful and make wiser decisions when our bodies are fired up. Overall this activity taught us how to regulate ourselves and focus on the present moment.
Thank yous / Bonnie & Isabella
We want to give a big thanks to Mr Ellul, year 10 helpers and all the other teachers who were involved in organising and planning the day.

NRL LEAGUE TAG CHAMPIONSHIPS 2023
JUNIOR GIRLS
The junior girls league tag team participated in the NRL's League Tag Championships event held at Lyrebird Park in Nowra on the 19th of October. The team was successful throughout the day, winning all games by a high margin, making the grand final which was played against Kiama High School. Unfortunately the girls did not take home the trophy, but were awarded second on the day which is an excellent achievement. Overall, the junior girls team were determined, confident and showed excellent sportsmanship throughout the day. Well done girls, I am proud of your efforts.

CCC CRICKET - JUNIOR GIRLS
History was made on Tuesday 17 October as the St John’s Girl’s Cricket team played their first ever match representing our school in the Sydney Zone of the NSW Catholic Girls Cricket Competition at Gannon’s Park in Peakhurst. For each of the three games each team was to play, the sides were restricted to 9 players and 12 overs per innings.
Our team was inexperienced with only one member having played cricket before using a cricket ball and playing on a pitch. This lack of experience, however did not dampen the girls’ enthusiasm to have a go and encourage others to do their best in the process of learning the intricacies of cricket.
The girls were set a challenge for the day. That being, to learn the basics of cricket and have as much fun as they could in the process.
Each member of the team then backed this up by having a go and showing their individual ability and potential. Even though we did not win a game, future stars were unearthed.
Mia and Emily showed their ability to catch and stop a ball behind the stumps as wicket keepers and also their ability with the bat. Hannah, Aurora, Sarelle and Hayley bowled with pace and accuracy. Laini, Bridie, Amelia, Mali, Georgia, Jorja, Abbey and Claudia bamboozled the opposition with their deceptive bowling techniques. Hannah, Aurora and Laini ended up being the best of the St John’s bowlers ending up with two wickets each for the day.
In the batting department, Emily, Aurora, Georgia, Laini, Brydie, Hayley and Sarelle were the standout performers with the bat. Aurora accumulated the most runs for the side with 9 runs. Two things the girls did learn from batting was the importance of watching the ball in the field and the importance of calling when running between the wickets. Most of our dismissals on the day were run outs caused by the inexperience of not calling loudly or clearly enough when running.
Some standout performances in the field included great catches from Amelia, Sarelle and Hannah.
There was a lot of laughing and positivity in the field. What the girl’s lacked in experience was outweighed by their desire to learn and compete fairly. A big thank you to Ms Swan and Ms Abbott for assisting on the day. Looking forward to next year’s competition already.

FATHER AND TEENAGE SON WEEKEND -20 TO 22 OCTOBER 2023 CATARACT SCOUT CAMP, APPIN
One of the most important influences in the lives of men is the relationship they had with their father or significant father figure. Don't miss this life-changing father and son weekend! Spots are limited to just 25 fathers with sons aged between 12 and 16 years.
This a unique opportunity for dads and their sons to embark on a quest of discovery with Robert Falzon and the team from menALIVE.
