As I write this Newsletter I recognise that we light the first Advent candle at mass this weekend and the lighting of both the first and second candles the following weekend. The first candle, which is purple, symbolises ’hope’. It is sometimes called the ‘prophecy candle’ in remembrance of the prophets, especially Isiah, who foretold the birth of Christ. It represents the expectation felt in anticipation of the coming Messiah.

The second candle, also purple, represents ‘faith’. It is called the ‘Bethlehem candle’ as a reminder of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem.

The third candle is pink and symbolizes ‘joy’. It is called the “Shepard’s Candle,” and is pink because rose is a liturgical colour for joy. The third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday and is meant to remind us of the joy that the world experienced at the birth of Jesus, as well as the joy that the faithful have as we pass the midpoint of Advent.

On the fourth week of Advent, we light the final purple candle to mark the final week of prayer and penance as we wait for the birth of our Savior. This final candle, the “Angel’s Candle,” symbolizes peace. It reminds us of the message of the angels: “Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men.”

The white candle is placed in the middle of the wreath and lit on Christmas Eve. This candle is called the “Christ Candle” and represents the life of Christ. The colour white is for purity—because Christ is our sinless, pure Savior.

HELPING KIDS DEAL WITH HORRIFYING NEWS

Terrorist events and war in Europe in recent weeks have reverberated around the world. Graphic images have been brought into our living rooms and onto our devices via the media over the last few weeks and will continue to do so in the immediate future. But what about the impact of the event and the subsequent effect of media coverage on children and young people? As adults we all want our children to live carefree lives and keep them from the pain and even horror of tragedies such as terror attacks. In reality we can’t do this. So what is a parent, teacher, or other caring adult to do when such events fill the airwaves and the consciousness of society?

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS

1. Reassure children that they are safe. The consistency of the images can be frightening for young children who don’t understand the notion of distance and have difficulty distinguishing between reality and fiction. Let them know that while this event is indeed happening it will not affect them directly.
2. Explain what happened. Sounds obvious but it’s important not to simply assume that children and young people understand what’s happened. Be calm and stick to the facts, using a map to show older children where it happened.
3. Be available. Let kids know that it is okay to talk about the unpleasant events. Listen to what they think and feel. By listening, you can find out if they have misunderstandings, and you can learn more about the support that they need.
4. Help children process what they see and hear, particularly through television. Children are good observers but can be poor interpreters of events that are out of their level of understanding.
5. Support children’s concerns for others. They may have genuine concerns for the suffering that will occur and they may need an outlet for those concerns. It is heart warming to see this empathy in children for the concerns of others.
6. Let them explore feelings beyond fear. Many children may feel sad or even angry with these events so let them express the full range of emotions.
7. Avoid keeping the television on all the time. The visual nature of the media means that images are repeated over and over, which can be both distressing to some and desensitising to others.
8. Be aware of your own actions. Children will take their cues from you and if they see you focusing on it in an unhealthy way then they will focus on it too. Let them know that it is happening but it should not dominate their lives.

 Children’s worlds can be affected in ways that we can’t even conceive of so adults need to be both sensitive to children’s needs and mindful of what they say and how they act in front of children.

In difficult times, it is worth remembering what adults and children need most are each other.                                                                Source: Practical Parenting

UNSW Bridging Courses

Chemistry and Physics Bridging Courses are now closed for 2023 and will next be offered in Jan/Feb 2024. 

Mathematics Bridging course is OPEN for registration. Bridging courses offer you the opportunity to revise or strengthen your knowledge of HSC Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics so you can successfully manage your studies in year one of university. 

You lecturer or tutor will reasonably expect this assumed knowledge at the beginning of your studies. Undertaking the bridging course will ensure you’re not at a disadvantage if you do not have a strong background or any prior knowledge in one or more of these HSC subjects and intend on studying a degree that assumes knowledge of these subjects.

Announcing the New $10,000 UNSW Advantage Award

For 2024, we’re introducing the $10,000 UNSW Advantage Award to support all students from low-socioeconomic areas as they transition to UNSW.

If you live in an eligible low-socioeconomic area, receive an offer from UNSW and enrol for Term 1 2024, you will be eligible to receive the $10,000 UNSW Advantage Award to support you in your first year of studies. Low-socioeconomic areas are based on IRSAD and IEO indexes of SEIFA criteria. 

Additionally, for 2024, all students who attend a Gateway school, apply through the Gateway Admission Pathway and enrol at UNSW will receive a $1,000 one-off payment to make the transition to uni easier, meaning you could be eligible for a total of an $11,000 award to make the most of your studies.

A Trade Support Loan is an interest free loan to help you purchase trade tools and supplies while being an apprentice. You can borrow up to $24,492 (2023-2024), which is paid in monthly instalments. You will not have to repay your loan until you are earning an income above the minimum repayment threshold ($51,550 for 2023-24). INTRODUCING MRS LAWRENCE - NEW DEFENCE SCHOOL MENTOR

Hi, my name is Mrs Lawrence. I am the new Defence School Mentor.

I started at St Johns the Evangelist High School in 2010 as a School Support Officer. In 2020, I transferred to St Michaels and enjoyed my time back in kindergarten. I am currently working between both schools. I have been a Defence spouse and travelled around Australia with my husband for thirty-three years. I have experienced the challenges that relocating interstate with a family can bring.

I aim to connect the Defence families to be more involved in the school community. I am busy organising year group Christmas parties for the end of the year and getting to know all the Defence students and their friendship groups. I am also currently liaising with Kookaburra Kids and Open Arms to see how we can connect into the services they provide to Defence families.

In 2005, our family moved back to Nowra after moving five times in five years to five different states. My children attended Cambewarra Public School and then completed high school at St John the Evangelist Catholic High School. My husband was a Rear Admiral in the Navy. He was based in Canberra and commuted for nine years while my two teenage boys and I lived at Culburra Beach. I know the impact mobility and service-related parental absence can have on a family. I am very well known in the Shoalhaven. Due to my experience in different schools in the Shoalhaven I have got to know many students but I have always gone out of my way to make Defence students feel welcome.

I am very passionate about all aspects of a Defence lifestyle. My oldest son has joined the Royal Australian Navy as a pilot and has finished a degree in the Australian Defence Force Academy. My youngest son is a helicopter technician with Sikorsky Australia working at HMAS Albatross. I am very happy to assist any students who might be looking for similar career opportunities.

CHRISTMAS PARTY INVITATION - DEFENCE STUDENTS

All of the Defence students have been invited to attend a Christmas party with fellow defence peers from their Year group next week. Year 10 has already had their party as they will be out next week on work placement.

Students are encouraged to attend these Christmas parties as Mrs Lawrence is going to a lot of trouble to organise them for the students. Here is a copy of the invitation Year 11 Defence students have received and all Defence students will receive their own invitation.

YEAR 10 DEFENCE CHRISTMAS PARTY

On Tuesday 28 November Year 10 Defence students were treated to a christmas party with some yummy goodies by their Defence Mentor Mrs Lawrence. 

YEAR 7 2024 DEFENCE STUDENTS

Mrs Lawrence, the Defence School Mentor, is currently occupied with preparing welcome packs and visiting Primary schools in the area to meet the incoming Year 7 Defence students for 2024.
