Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Term 3! It’s hard to believe that half of the school year is already behind us. As we step into the second half of the year, it’s a valuable time for reflection on the journey so far and the aspirations we hold for the months ahead.
At our recent school assembly, we took a moment to celebrate those students who were recognised last term for either excelling in their learning demonstrating remarkable perseverance and growth. Their commitment to learning, even in the face of challenges, is something we deeply admire.
I also spoke to our students about the importance of personal reflection. Semester 1 offered each of them unique experiences and lessons. I encouraged them to consider:
- What worked well for them in their learning and what can I continue to do?
- What habits or distractions might they let go of to better support their growth as we move forward with our learning?
We also think of our Year 12 students who embark on their HSC Trial Examinations next week. We hope that the work you have put in over the last few terms comes to fruition. Your dedication and resilience have not gone unnoticed, and we wish you every success. In preparation for this, it was great to see our Year 11 and 12 students take full advantage of their new study space - the furniture has truly created a vibrant learning environment!
Finally, on Thursday 31st July, we celebrated 50 years of NAIDOC—a truly special moment in our calendar year. This year’s theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy”, beautifully embodied all that we are here at SJE. It is not something that we do—it is who we are: bugiya, nhaway, buraadja. Yesterday, today, tomorrow.

We took this opportunity to thank all of the staff who work tirelessly every day to support our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Special thanks to Mrs Ramognini, our Gooroon Coordinator, and to Uncle Archie, Uncle Sean, Aunty Deb, Aunty Katey, Aunty Jo, Aunty Lizzie, and Aunty Chris, who continue to be the holders and teachers of our culture. Their leadership in opening cultural programs—such as boy’s didj and dance, girl’s dance, and our choir to all students, irrespective of background, is a testament to the inclusive spirit of our community.
The pride and dedication of all students involved in the NAIDOC celebration were on full display during our ceremony. It was a true example of black feet and white feet walking soft upon the land, keeping our culture alive and well. And while we will always honour and celebrate the elders of bugiya, as Aunty Chris so beautifully said, it is our young people who are our nhaway, our buraadja.

Thank you again to all our families and special guests who joined us to mark such a meaningful occasion in our community.
NAIDOC ASSEMBLY
Take care, and I look forward to another amazing term of growth at St John’s.
Warm regards
Acting Principal

The performance was brilliant and a true showcase to the creativity and teamwork of the talented students and staff of St John’s and their many hours of dedicated work!

YEAR 9 PDHPE
This term in PDHPE, our Year 9 students are engaging in a Project-Based Learning (PBL) unit , exploring the driving question: "How can I keep my mental health at its best and support the mental health of others?" Over the first five weeks of the term, students will work collaboratively in groups to investigate key mental health concepts, reflect on personal self-care strategies, and consider the importance of supporting others. Their learning will culminate in the creation of a meaningful resource designed to educate a specific audience on the driving question.
This unit not only builds health literacy but also encourages empathy, teamwork and real-world problem-solving as students take ownership of promoting positive mental health in their community.
Please have a conversation with your child about what they have created!

WORK EXPERIENCE: A WEEK TO BE PROUD OF!
From June 30th to July 4th, our Year 10 students participated in a work experience program. After reading through the feedback from employers, I couldn’t be prouder of this group.
Before heading off to their placements, students were reminded:
"Remember, you are representing St John's, your family, and most importantly – yourself. Ask questions, be proactive, look for things to do, and be respectful."
It was incredibly rewarding to see that message echoed in the feedback we received. Employers consistently spoke of the students’ enthusiasm, initiative, and respectful attitude. A few examples of this feedback are included below.
As parents and caregivers, you should also feel a strong sense of pride in how your children represented not just our school, but your families and themselves.

This was an engaging and eye-opening experience for our Year 10 students. It provided them with valuable insight into how the workforce operates and the expectations they will need to meet—and exceed—as future employees.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding work of Ms Arenas in coordinating the entire Work Experience program. It was a significant undertaking, and her efforts ensured the success of the week.
A sincere thank you also goes to the staff who visited students and connected with their employers during the placements: Mrs Frew, Mr Wilson, Ms Lloyd, Mrs Renshaw, Mrs Standen, Mrs Manley, and Mrs Kelly. Your support played a vital role in the students’ positive experience.
REPORTS
At the end of last term Year 10 Semester 1 reports were emailed to parents/carers. Take the time to talk to your child about their report, focus on their learning profile and see if there are any areas for improvement and recognise areas where they have excelled. Discuss some goals they can work towards and re-visit the”My Study Time” (see below) to incorporate some or more “brain training” into the family’s schedule!
Ms Wendy Isemonger
Year 10 Leader of Wellbeing
YEAR 12
Year 12 moves into a demanding part of their high school experience. As part of being prepared for the Trial HSC I encourage students to revise class notes, access 2023 and 2024 HSC markers comments and the syllabus rubric on the NESA site. If time permits, reading texts again will also enable students to look at the texts through a sharpened lens. As we do revision in class in the lead up to the Trial HSC and the HSC, I encourage all Year 12 students to seek and take on feedback and direction given by the English teachers.
YEAR 7 - 11
To students in Year 7-11, I encourage you to set goals for your study of English this semester and these should be set using feedback from the Semester One report and in consultation with the class teacher. This goal should ideally involve reading on a nightly basis as there is no better way to improve reading and writing than to read well written texts.
Ms Michelle Selmes
English Leader of Learning

How much homework should you be doing in high school?
Are you spending hours hunched over textbooks wondering if you’re doing too much or too little homework? You’re not alone. The homework debate has been raging for decades, with students, parents, and teachers all having different opinions on how much study time is actually beneficial.
The truth is, there’s no magic number that works for everyone. But there are some research-backed guidelines that can help you find the sweet spot between academic success and maintaining your sanity.
Using labour market insights to guide subject selections
Subject selection season is here again, and as careers advisors and educators, you may be facing the familiar challenges of helping students make informed choices about their academic pathways. But how often are real-world employment outcomes considered when guiding these decisions?
This year, why not try approaching subject selection differently by integrating Labour Market Information (LMI) into your guidance. By combining pathway possibilities with employment data, you could help students make choices that align with both their interests and career prospects.
The 7 best time management apps for students
We all struggle with time management from time to time, and as a student, juggling homework, extracurriculars, social life, and sometimes even a part-time job can be a real balancing act. Luckily, there’s an app out there for just about anything nowadays, which means there are loads of time management apps available to help boost productivity.
We’ve gone ahead and found 7 of the best apps to help students keep on top of their tasks and manage their time effectively.
Understanding the ATAR: Common questions answered
If you’re not entirely sure how the ATAR system works, why you might need one, and how they’re calculated, you’re definitely not alone. The Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (or ATAR) can seem confusing at first, but once you understand the basics, it all starts to make sense. Here are some of the most common questions answered and misconceptions about the ATAR busted.
How a gap year can help your work and life skills
For many students, the final year of high school can feel like a race to the finish line, with university or career plans immediately on the horizon. But it’s also OK to take a step back and consider a gap year instead – in fact, it could be one of the most impactful experiences of your life.
Far from being time off, a gap year can be a chance to gain valuable experiences, skills, and insights to set you up for future success. Here’s how taking a gap year can help boost your work and life skills, making you stand out in the professional world and beyond.

RECENT EVENTS
Year 10 Work Experience – A Week of Growth and Discovery

Year 10 students have returned from their work experience week with renewed confidence, valuable skills, and a clearer sense of direction. It was a positive and exciting time, with students preparing and presenting themselves with pride in a variety of workplace settings.
Throughout the week, students built new skills, discovered personal strengths, and identified areas for growth. Many gained a deeper understanding of what the world of work looks like, with some potentially securing casual jobs as a result of their strong work ethic and positive attitude.
For those in trades-based placements, the rainy weather presented some challenges – but this proved to be a valuable real-world lesson in how trades are directly impacted by conditions on site. Students took this in their stride, learning to adapt while still showing great commitment.
As Ms Isonmonger shared in her article, employer feedback across the board was overwhelmingly positive. Students supported one another, they made new connections with professionals in their field of interest, and left their placements inspired and motivated for the senior years ahead.
It was a fantastic experience all round – one that not only opened doors, but also opened minds to the possibilities of the future.
Well done everyone!
Navy Aviation Prospect Scheme - NAPS NextStep
We kicked off the term with the annual NAPS NextStep program, an exciting and well-attended event that took students to both HMAS Albatross and HMAS Creswell. Over the course of the day, students participated in a variety of physical and team-building activities that sparked friendly competition and brought out the best in everyone.
One of the highlights was the overwater obstacle challenge – a true test of endurance and resilience! Students gave it their all, pushing themselves to complete as much of the course as possible. It was inspiring to see the camaraderie grow throughout this particular activity, with students cheering each other on, sharing strategies, and offering words of encouragement at every hurdle.
The positive energy and team spirit were clear, with clapping and laughter creating a genuinely uplifting atmosphere. Lunch in the Junior Mess at Albatross was a great opportunity for students to relax and connect, followed by a comprehensive career talk from ADF recruitment. Students learned about the wide range of pathways available, the opportunity for travel, and the many challenging yet rewarding roles on offer – all of which sparked genuine interest in ADF careers.
Looking ahead, students are encouraged to apply for the next phase of the program, LongLook, taking place in Term 4. Please come and see me if you have any questions.
Well done to everyone who participated – you represented our school proudly!
Rural Allied Health and Medical Society UNSW Workshop
Year 10 and 11 students took part in an engaging two-hour workshop led by the UNSW Rural Allied Health and Medical Society. The session offered a hands-on introduction to various health careers, with students rotating through activities such as psychological games and cognitive function tests, as well as basic first aid procedures.
Students had the unique opportunity to speak directly with current UNSW students studying medicine, optometry, physiotherapy, psychology, sports physiology, and dietetics. These conversations were open and honest, with university students sharing not only the highlights of their journeys, but also the challenges they faced and the strategies they used to succeed.
There was strong interest in the career pathways offered through UNSW, particularly for those considering study in rural and regional areas. Students also received valuable information about scholarships, accommodation, and the vibrant social life at university.
It was a fantastic opportunity to see our students so inquisitive and engaged. Experiences like these can truly shape and inspire their future choices.

Here are Williamson's practical tips for starting your career journey. The most important thing, he advises, is to focus on your direction, not your destination.

Through this scheme, you may receive adjustment factors (points) to enhance your selection rank when applying for eligible courses at participating institutions.
