SJE Newsletter 2025 Term 3 Week 4
Eirth_James.jpg

Dear Parents and Carers,

Today Friday 15th August, we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, a deeply significant event in the Christian calendar. This holy day commemorates the moment when the Virgin Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven, marking the end of her earthly life and her entrance into eternal glory.

Often referred to as Mary’s “heavenly birthday,” the Assumption reminds us of the hope and promise of new life, and the importance of faith, grace, and devotion.

Feast_of_the_Assumption_.png

As we reflect on Mary’s journey and her unwavering commitment to God, we are reminded of the strength and resilience within our own community—especially our Year 12 students, who are nearing the completion of their HSC Trial Examinations.

We are incredibly proud of each and every one of them. The feedback from our supervising staff has been overwhelmingly positive, praising not only the students’ conduct but also their dedication, focus, and the wholehearted effort they brought to every exam. Their commitment is a true reflection of the values we hold dear.

In the coming weeks, students will begin receiving their results. As with any significant milestone, there will be a range of emotions—joy, relief, disappointment, and everything in between. It’s important that we, as a school and as families, stand beside our young people, offering encouragement, perspective, and support.

It may sound unusual coming from a high school principal, but achievement is not the ultimate goal. Growth is. If we can celebrate the progress our students have made—no matter where they started or where they are now—then we are truly nurturing lifelong learners.

Let us also remind our students that completing the Trials marks the end of their internal assessments, but not the end of their journey. There is still valuable time ahead to reflect, refine, and grow before the final HSC Examinations. This is often the period where students take feedback to heart and make remarkable strides toward their potential.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to our dedicated HSC teachers and support staff. Your tireless efforts, detailed feedback, and unwavering belief in our students make all the difference.

As we honour Mary’s Assumption today, may we also honour the journey of every student in our care, the dedicated staff beside them and the loving families behind them.

Warm regards

James Eirth

Acting Principal

Diaz_Sonia.jpgWELCOME MILO - NEW WELLBING DOG

We are excited to announce this week the launch of a second wellbeing dog through the Dogs Connect program in our school. This is a whole school wellbeing program that has seen the introduction of another support dog, Milo in our community. Our school wellbeing dogs, Riot and Milo, will be much loved and important members of our community.

The Dogs Connect program will support us in implementing this very thoroughly, and considerately. At this stage we encourage anyone who would like to know more about this program to look through the website link below:

https://dogsconnect.net.au

We are very excited to be introducing our second wellbeing dog. We have a team of staff who will lead this program. We would also like to assure the community that this program will not involve anyone who does not wish to be involved. We know that this work will continue to have a really positive impact on many people in our community, and we acknowledge and respect that connection with our wellbeing dogs will be offered on a great variety of levels.

PROUDLY SUPPORTING 'BULLYING NO WAY': NATIONAL WEEK OF ACTION - 11 - 15 AUGUST 2025
Bullying_No_way.jpg

Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm.

It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening. Bullying can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert).

Bullying behaviour is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time (for example, through sharing of digital records). Bullying of any form or for any reason can have immediate medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders.

Single incidents and conflicts or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.

St John’s is proudly supporting Bullying No Way: National Week of Action, 11 to 15 August 2025. The theme for this year's campaign is Be Bold. Be Kind. Speak Up.

Bullying No Way Week is a commitment being made by thousands of schools and supporters across the country. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to bullying prevention. It gives us an opportunity to connect with students, staff and school communities to implement workable solutions to prevent bullying.

It takes a community to be brave and address bullying behaviours, within and beyond the school gate. Students can be bold, kind and speak up to support others being bullied. While trusted adults are there to support children and young people learn how to be kind to each other and report bullying.

Parents and carers play a crucial role in preventing and responding to bullying. Understanding the definition of bullying is the first step in talking about how to prevent and respond to bullying with your child. 'Bullying' is a word that is used for behaviours that are not actually bullying. These other behaviours can be just as serious but may require different responses.

School responses to reports of bullying can be much more effective when parents and carers report bullying and support school staff efforts to respond to it.

If your child reports that bullying is occurring at school, or the bullying is occurring outside school hours and involves students from the school, you should contact your child’s PALS teacher or Leader of Wellbeing and let them know about the situation.

For more information about Bullying No Way Week and bullying prevention, visit the Bullying No Way website.

PAUL DILLON - PARENT PRESENTATION

'SAVE THE DATE'

We are excited to offer an opportunity for parents and carers in our community to engage in a valuable presentation by Paul Dillon from DARTA (Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia). Paul has been working in the area of drug education for almost 30 years and is regularly contracted by agencies and organisations across the country to provide updates on current drug trends. He continues to work with many school communities to ensure they have access to quality information and best practice drug education. The details of Paul’s parent/carer presentation is as follows:

Date: Thursday 11th September 2025

Location: St John the Evangelist Catholic High School Hall

Time: 6pm to 7pm

Cost: Free

Presentation Topic: ‘Risk taking’ – why do teens do the things they do? What can parents do to keep them as safe as possible?

Adolescence is a risky time. As a teen matures and becomes more independent, they experience dramatic hormonal changes, increasing social and peer pressure and have greater access to alcohol and other drugs. This presentation will briefly examine the history of ‘teenagers’, rebellion and the different ‘temptations’ that have existed over time. Using the latest research on the developing brain, it will also discuss why young people make the decisions they do during this time. Sleepovers, parties and gatherings provide teens with valuable opportunities to develop important socialising skills but are not ‘risk-free’. Some practical strategies and tips for parents considering allowing their teen to attend such events to help ensure they are as safe as possible.

Opportunities to hear from experts such as Paul Dillon are invaluable so our advice to you is to SAVE THE DATE and please come along.

FEAST DAY OF SAINT MARY OF THE CROSS MACKILLOP - DIOCESAN MASS

Mary Mackillop, Australia's first saint, was an Australian nun and educator. She dedicated her life to serving the poor and underprivileged through education and charitable works.
Friday 8th August marked the Feast Day of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, where Youth Ministry Leaders Anya, Marnie, Kate and Maddy from St Johns attended the Diocesan mass in Wollongong to remember and celebrate her life.

    2025 DIOCESAN TENNIS

This year marked the end of an era for the St John’s Tennis Team, with five senior players retiring – Billy Broadhurst, Viktor Creighton, Toby Royston, Hannah Phillips, and Amelia O’Neill. Special mention to Billy, Hannah, and Amelia, who have represented the school every year since Year 7.

The boys had a standout tournament, with Viktor and Lucas Duncan each winning two of their three singles matches, and Toby impressing at the net. In the semi-finals, Billy’s crucial singles win secured the team’s first-ever finals appearance, finishing runners-up to Corpus Christi.

The girls opened with a dominant 6–0 win in all singles matches by Hannah, Gianna, and Bridget Gonzaga, before bowing out to eventual champions St Mary’s. Hannah’s skill and the team’s sportsmanship were a highlight of the day.

YEAR 11 LEADERSHIP DAY - MONDAY 11 AUGUST

The Leadership Day this week was an outstanding success and really highlighted what a composed and peaceful year group we have in Year 11.

The main messages that had an impact on the day were:

    • St John’s is not just looking for the most suitable people to wear a badge; it's also about learning to lead in any situation in life. A student can lead from the front, from behind, or alongside others.
      ● The year group is in its final years of school together. The importance of teamwork is paramount. It’s important to acknowledge that we all slip up now and then — sometimes you succeed, sometimes you crash.
      ● Student lives will likely reflect this description over the next 12 months, so working as a team is vital to support each other through this time.
      ● All our senior students are leaders, whether they are wearing a badge or not — younger students look up to you.
      ● You need to think about leadership throughout Year 12 and strive to be the best you can be — not just for yourself, but for others as well.

Students now have access to an electronic nomination form via Google Classroom if they wish to nominate for a leadership position in 2026. These positions include School Captains, Vice-Captains, and House Captains. Students who gain the role of House Captain may be required to change houses.

    Criteria for ALL nominees include:

    • Participation in school carnivals and special days (e.g. Foundation Day)
    • Wearing the school uniform with pride and in accordance with school expectations
    • Maintaining a high standard of behaviour
    • Demonstrating a good work ethic
    • Participation in a range of extra-curricular activities, including community involvement, as evidenced by their School Passport

    Expectations

A school leader at St John’s will:

    • Represent our school with pride at all times in both conduct and appearance
    • Extend the gift of friendship to all students by being understanding, kind, and a good listener
    • Follow and comply with all school rules, and assist other students in doing the same
    • Promote school spirit and represent the interests of all students

Students intending to nominate themselves must submit the completed online form and their up-to-date Passport as supporting evidence to their PALS teacher by Monday, 18th August 2025.

Successful nominees will take part in a Leadership Panel/Forum with the Year 11 cohort as the audience during Week 6.

HOT CHOCOLATE - VINNIES WINTER APPEAL

Year 11 took on the job of selling hot chocolate on Wednesday mornings while Year 12 had their HSC trial exams. Many students enjoyed a lovely hot chocolate to start their day.
Thank you for supporting the 'Vinnies Winter Appeal'.

What a busy and productive start to the term it has been for Year 12.
With the HSC Trial Examinations nearly complete, I would like to congratulate all students on the mature and dedicated way they approached this important milestone.

We are now entering the final stage of their school journey — the countdown to graduation. I would like to remind all parents and students of the importance of these remaining weeks before both graduation and the HSC examinations. This time is critical for academic preparation and growth, but it is also a special and memorable period for students to come together as a Year group.

Friday 12 September: Paul Dillon Presentation (morning session)

Tuesday 23 September: Year 12 Activity Day - Breakfast / Crazy Photo

    Tuesday 23 September: Year 12 Liturgy & Recognition Award Presentation - 6pm

As a reminder, our Reflection/Wellbeing Day will take place on Friday 22 August (Week 5). All students are asked to bring a white t-shirt for this day.

Congratulations to all of our students who recently performed in our school production Alice in Wonderland: Down the Rabbit Hole.

Good luck to all students who are preparing their major works which are due for completion in the coming weeks. We wish all year 12 students the best over the coming weeks.

'God's gift to you is your life. What you become is your gift to God.'

    Mr Nicholas Garner

    Year 12 Leader of Wellbeing

    STAGE 4

Year 7 and 8 have been working hard on Maths Pathways ensuring that gaps in their Mathematics knowledge are being filled or in some cases extended beyond the Stage 4 syllabus. Year 7 have been investigating scale drawings by designing a room in their house and drawing the furniture to scale to ensure that it fits. Year 8 completed an assessment at the end of last term to check their recall of work they had completed in Semester 1. This would be a good time to check in with your child as to how these tasks went.

We also have a few students in Year 7 who are being extended through the Australian Maths Trust program designed to broaden their mathematical understanding beyond the syllabus. Problem solving is at the heart of this program and these skills are developing nicely. Year 8 are focusing each week on problem solving by using the Singapore Bar model method. This technique allows for a visual representation of the problem to be built by the student leading to an algebraic model. These problem solving methods are used to improve students' engagement with real life problems and allow them to develop the skills needed to be successful in senior school and life in general.

    STAGE 5

Year 9 and 10 both had assignments as an assessment at the end of term 2. Year 9 developed their understanding of financial mathematics, specifically taxation, through an activity where they selected a future job, calculated their income and annual tax followed by establishing a loan to buy their desired car. Year 10 were required to focus on the Australian Open by understanding the current draw and developing an alternative proposal. This allowed them to deepen their understanding of  indices and why mathematics is important in sport. Students engaged with both these tasks and strong results were achieved throughout the year groups.

Year 9 is currently working on trigonometry and year 10 equations. Both these topics will be assessed in their Term 3 tasks in week 9.

    STAGE 6

Year 12 have been reviewing for their trial HSC this week and will return to school to complete the last of the course work. Students value the support they receive at home and with about 5 weeks of classes left on their return to school it is important they are reviewing past HSC papers and checking in with their teacher for study hints to get the most out of this time.

Year 11 students are also starting to prepare for the Preliminary exams in week 8. Students should be reviewing their class notes, completing past papers and clarifying misunderstandings with their class teacher.

With senior exams fast approaching it is a good time to remind families that the Mathematics faculty supports our students during lunchtime on Tuesdays and Fridays in B5 by providing access to teachers to help with any questions, or just a quiet place to study. All students are welcome.

    Mr Craig Holden

    Mathematics Leader of Learning

KILARNI ALDRIDGE - YEAR 10 - CSIRO 'DEADLY GENERATION STEM CAMP'

On Sunday the 3rd of August I travelled to Stanwell Tops to take part in the CSIRO Deadly Generation STEM Camp. Over five days, we took part in a range of meaningful activities connected to Indigenous culture and the environment.

On the first day, after a smoking ceremony by Uncle Peter, we learned about bush medicine from Aunty May and practiced throwing boomerangs. The next day began with a sun ceremony, followed by marine data collection at Coal Cliff Beach, and we learned the whale dance in the afternoon.

That evening, we gathered around a campfire to study the stars. On the third day we headed to Symbio Wildlife Park and had a tour of the zoo and were shown the drone technology which is currently being used all over NSW to count populations of deer, koalas, etc, using thermal technology. A highlight of the trip was visiting the significant Aboriginal site Hill 60 and meeting Indigenous rangers in planting over 300 trees at Coomaditchie as part of a regeneration project.
This experience has made me feel more connected to my culture, I had the opportunity to meet STEM professionals for future pathways and make new friends. I recommend this program to future year 8, 9 and 10 Students.

SEAN HARRIS - YEAR 9 - COMMUNITY SERVICE DURING NAIDOC WEEK

We would like to recognise Sean Harris for his Community Service during NAIDOC week celebrations. Sean visited Jumping Jellybeans Early Childhood Centre in Berry to perform on the Didgeridoo for the children and staff.

The staff informed the school that the 'friends sat and listened so contented for a long time he had to keep going for ages. He brought in his own Didgeridoo which he made for our Indigenous family to see and was told it was Deadly, such a compliment.'

Well done Sean for contributing to the NAIDOC celebrations within the community.

BlueScope Industry Tour - Port Kembla

        Blue_Scope_Tour_4_.jpg

On August 6, Year 9, 10, and 11 students had the opportunity to tour the BlueScope site at Port Kembla—a truly eye-opening experience. From the very start, students learnt about the importance of Occupational Health and Safety, listening to strict site guidelines and putting on the required PPE gear to ensure they could explore the site safely.

The sheer size of the plant - comparable to Melbourne’s CBD, made a lasting impression, as students came to understand the vital role BlueScope plays in local employment. The company employs over 3,000 people directly, with a further 8,000 positions outsourced, making it a major contributor to our community.

Presentations gave students valuable insight into the wide range of potential career pathways, including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, administration, and logistics. BlueScope’s strong partnership with the University of Wollongong has also opened doors for students to secure cadetships, allowing individuals to build long-term careers within the company.

Students interested in pursuing a career with BlueScope are encouraged to see Ms Arenas for further guidance and support.

UOW Teaching, SLSO and Early Childhood Education Workshop

        UOW_Teaching_SLSO_and_Early_Childhood_Education_Workshop_19_.jpg

The UOW Teaching, SLSO, and Early Childhood Education Workshop, held on August 13, was once again very well attended. Year 10 and 11 students gained valuable insight into the job market and the strong projected growth in these fields. These roles are currently in high demand due to workforce shortages and are expected to continue growing into the future.

Students were provided with detailed pathway information for each career area, along with an overview of the many government incentives available; including grants and guaranteed permanency in teaching positions. Traineeship and TAFE pathway options were also explored, with Early Childhood Education generating significant interest among participants.

It was fantastic to see students engaging so actively in the hands-on activities, from lesson planning and organising ball games for young children, to using art as a form of self-expression. The mini canvas artworks were a particular highlight!

Students interested in pursuing a school-based traineeship in Early Childhood Education are encouraged to speak with Mr Gibson or Ms Arenas for further guidance.

UAC - Career Mapping - Where to after school?

Many students are uncertain about their next steps after Year 12. But – as Phillip Williamson, Head Teacher Careers for the NSW Government’s Educational Pathways Program, writes – it’s vital to go easy on yourself, self-reflect and do your research. Here are Williamson's practical tips for starting your career journey. The most important thing, he advises, is to focus on your direction, not your destination.

Through this scheme, you may receive adjustment factors (points) to enhance your selection rank when applying for eligible courses at participating institutions.

UAC - Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS)

        Applications Close 5 September

The Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) is one way institutions make early offers of undergraduate admission to Year 12 students. They do this by using criteria other than (or in addition to) the ATAR. Each institution has its own policy for determining SRS eligibility and making offers. For example, you may also

have to submit an EAS application institution-defined dates, or attend a school in a particular region. SRS is not available for all courses. The institution-specific SRS criteria detail any exceptions.

        SCHOLARSHIPS

        Shoalhaven_Education_Fund_.jpg

The Shoalhaven Education Fund was established to provide much needed financial assistance and support to local youth to help them achieve their post- high school education, training and vocation aspirations. We recognise that the cost of rural students pursuing their post- high school goals is often much greater than those of their metropolitan counterparts and that sometimes these costs can be prohibitive.

SEF fundraises throughout the year and accepts donations from local residents and businesses in order to provide financial grants to students who need an extra helping hand. The funds come directly from your local community – none of it is government funded – celebrating the aspirations of local youth and working to help them achieve these aspirations.
