I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your support during this most challenging year. You have worked alongside us to ensure that our young people are not only maintaining a focus on excellence in their education but providing a supportive and engaging learning environment during this time.
This year has forced us to not do so many of the things that we do, such as the school musical, Wakakirri, sport, carnivals, excursions and assemblies to name a few.
It did however enable us to engage in new opportunities such as streaming assemblies, SJE sporting challenges, musical trivia at lunch, online competition for chess, debating and many more. It has forced us to be creative and to look for the positive. A true cause for celebration.

It is with a real sense of gratitude that I write to the St John's community as I prepare to leave and take my position as Principal at Our Lady of Mercy College Burraneer, a part of Sydney Catholic Schools. St John's will always be a cherished part of my story and I hope to remain connected to all the wonderful teachers I have worked with, students I have taught and journeyed with and families I have come to know in times of celebration as well as in difficult times. I have so many wonderful memories and I have learnt so much. I am confident that this community will continue to be a wellspring of strength for all who belong.
It is has been a gift to love my work and the people I work with, and the community I have belonged to. I have been blessed to work with such committed staff, so passionately led by Mrs Sandra Hogan and the school Leadership team.

The last few weeks of 2020 have been jammed packed with activities for Year 9. The Adventure Day was a tremendous opportunity for the students to spend some much needed time together in a fun and relaxed environment.
Activities that the students engaged in on the day consisted of abseiling, canoeing, swimming, bushwalking, Tree Tops Adventure, games and Team Challenges. All students put in 100% effort to ensure the day was a great experience!
A big thank you goes out to all of the teachers that supported the day and ran activities. Particular mention must go to Mr Jakymszyn and Mr Higgins for the many hours put in to organising such a fun day for the students.

The Pastoral Afternoon again was a fun experience where the students had to problem solve in their house groups.
Some really beautiful designs were created and there was lots of fun and laughter during creation and the parade of ‘garments’.
The year group enjoyed afternoon tea and then cheered on the finalist of the Volleyball Competition. Congratulations to A Netball Team on being the winners for 2020!
We did manage to get in our Reflection Day, albeit, shorter than normal.
The reflective activities gave students the opportunity to think about our year group motto “God has no hands but yours” whilst connecting it to the image and likeness of God.
Thank you Mr Lopez, Ms Baker and the RE teachers for making this time special for Year 9.
Year 9 again had the opportunity to participate in the Love Bites Program. This year Love Bites was presented in a reduced format but this did not impact the way students engaged in developing their awareness of the Unwritten Rules of relationships and Gender Stereotypes.
Thank you Year 9 on the way you have engaged in these activities. It has been wonderful being a part of the laughter and joy of this terrific year group.
Enjoy your break and stay safe.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

PRESENTATION AWARD CEREMONY
Well done to Year 10 who maintained an excellent sense of occasion throughout the awards ceremony last Friday. It was so pleasing to see so many Year 10 students receive whole school awards. Students also received awards across a range of KLA’s and Special awards within their year group.
OP SHOP BALL
Well done to all involved in the Op Shop Ball for Year 10, there was a range of amazing outfits and some interesting dance moves that really entertained on the day.
A massive shout out to the PDHPE faculty for organising and running the event.
TRANSITION WEEK
Year 10 participated in a Transition Week Program aimed at preparing students for the increased demands of senior schooling. It is hoped that this program allowed students to be future focussed, goal driven, and inspire them to be role models and future leaders within the school. The week was also a chance for Year 10 to reflect upon the positive experiences of work experience and aim for personal growth as they move towards Year 11.
Some of the programs/ activities that students participated include;
- Future careers and studies
- Study/ organisational skills
- Black Dog Mental Health Fitness Challenge
- Your Choices- Making good choices
- Creating habits that lead to success- Human Connections, Preparing for senior studies
- Exploring learning dispositions and how to embed them into learning opportunities
- Promoting leadership within the cohort
- Proactive wellbeing strategies to deal with increased pressures of senior schooling (Mindfulness, Nutrition, Wellbeing)
- Develop resilience as an individual and year group when faced with adversity
A heartfelt thank you to Miss Prayento for all her time and effort in the development and planning to ensure the week ran smoothly. Transition week would not have been possible without the countless hours she put in to ensure the program got off the ground. Thank you to the Year 10 PALS team who gave up their time to deliver the program and support the Year 10’s as they move toward their senior schooling. I’m humbled and grateful to work with such a fantastic team!

DRAMA
As 2020 drew to a close and we reflected on opportunities to perform that we had been denied this year due to the pandemic we decided that it was vitally important to find a way to create a work that we could share with our school community.
Accordingly, Year 10 Drama embarked on a rather ambitious endeavour to rehearse and perform a work in less than four weeks. There were two parts to the performance, the first was a series of monologues that explored the different experiences that people had dealing with the effects of the pandemic in 2020.
The second part was a play called Rainbow Dark which was a darkly humorous piece that examined our Government’s treatment of those people who had fled persecution in their own country and sought refuge in Australia. The Year 10 students did an incredible job in bringing these stories to life not just on stage but also through their work in design, costume, lighting, music and sound effects. Congratulations to all students in Year 10 Drama for their amazing efforts in creating this work to share with a number of classes that came to watch.
I would like to congratulate all students of Drama in 2020 for their energy, enthusiasm, dedication and hard work in class each week in what has been a very difficult year.
YEAR 10 VISUAL ARTS
Year 10 Visual Arts looked at the practice of John Woseley - an English Australian artist who works out in remote areas of Australia, documenting the landscape and integrating elements of it into his large scale drawings. The Year 10's were challenged to explore the school environment through the practice of Woseley, with each student given a thick piece of watercolor paper - the goal being an experience of place and a large scale communal artwork.
They were given a checklist of things to include in their artwork, such as a drawing a map, a list of things that they could see, detailed drawing and painting with a natural brush. They were also given the limitations of only using natural materials to create on their paper as well as pencil. The students got creative, crushing flowers into their work, dragging it over mud and using dirt to pigment their paper. Once finished, the paper were buried in the bushlands to be dug up a week later.
When they were unearthed, students were excited to find the changes taken place in their works, taking on more of the environment some even had bugs and moss on them!
Taking them back into the classroom, each student was given a different map grid of the local area and asked to map in over the top of the paper. A small group of students then laid out the works in grid and drew back into the works to connect them into a cohesive artwork which was then installed.
The students took away from this the role that process plays in the conceptual development of artworks, as well as having fun experimenting and creating something as a group.

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE
During Week 8 of this term Year 10 students undertook work experience placements. As it is very challenging this year to find an employer to take on work experience students, we are very grateful to those businesses that were able to accept our students.
