LENT– WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
As we move through this 2023 Lenten season of prayer, penance, sacrifice and good works we focus on the preparation for the celebration of Easter. Easter is the major celebration and peak time in our Church calendar and the preparation period of Easter is crucial to understanding and obtaining the full meaning.
After the ‘legalisation’ of Christianity in A.D. 313, Lenten fasting and Easter
preparations become more normalised. The 40 day period is likewise a special
number. Moses spent 40 days on Mount Sinai preparing to receive the 10
Commandments. Elijah spent 40 days walking to Mount Horeb and Jesus fasted for
40 days in the desert.
Ash Wednesday is a day where, as Catholics, we proudly mark ourselves with an
ashen cross on the forehead and declare that we are ‘Faithful to the Gospel”.
Although drawn from a Jewish tradition this was formalized as a Christian tradition in
the early 11th century.
While fasting often dominates the discussion around Lent, equally important are
prayer and almsgiving. Prayer is often what sustains us in times of turmoil in our
lives. This comforting presence that we can rely on at all times. Almsgiving or
supporting those less fortunate is also a significant part of Lent. I urge all families to
embrace this season, support Project Compassion and look within, to your core
values, and without, in service of others.

OPEN NIGHT
What a wonderful event that showcased our school so well and allowed our student
volunteers to shine. I thank the Staff for their time away from their families and the
enthusiasm and passion they have for their teaching and the school.
A particular highlight was the students who led tour groups or volunteered to assist in the displays. Many parents gave feedback as they left about how polite and helpful these student volunteers were on the night. A sincere thank you.
We all know that St John’s is a very good school, but the aim is to make it a great
one. With commitment like that shown last night we are on the right path.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
This event is celebrated annually and works towards creating a work of gender
equity, free from bias, stereotypes and discrimination. Wouldn’t that be a great world
to thrive in?
Working in education and particularly in the Catholic Education Diocese of
Wollongong where almost 80% of employees are female, I feel proud that my
working world also works toward this aim.
On this day we celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of
women from all around the world. The day also focuses on a call to action for
accelerating gender parity and setting agendas and goals in achieving these targets.

What a busy and productive first term Year 11 have had. Settling in to their preliminary year has been a challenge all of Year 11 have embraced and I am so proud of the mature and positive approach they have taken.
Year 11 have been set a goal this Year to participate in as many extra curricular activities and social justice initiatives as possible throughout the year in order to add to their Senior Passports. These passports are vital for students seeking leadership opportunities and for the school as they write their references at the end of the HSC year. It was so pleasing to see the amount of students who signed up to volunteer as tour guides for our Open Night this Wednesday Night. Students represented the school proudly and were key in ensuring the smooth running of the night.

Year 11 have already involved themselves in a number of different learning experiences this term including in Chemistry with Dr Elton.

Year 12 have hit the ground running this term with a focus on assessment tasks across all subjects as well as various extracurricular and community service activities.
PASTORAL FOCUS
The upcoming Pastoral Focus lesson will be assisting the students with:
- Increasing Motivation
- Taking better notes - and how to use them for good in their studies!
- Using Mindfulness to increase Academic Performance
- Library Resources
Students are asked to engage positively with the activities to ensure they get the most out of the session and work toward developing these essential skills as they move through their HSC year.
JERSEYS
This week Year 12 received some positive news. They have earned the privilege to wear their jersey on Wednesday in addition to Friday. This has occurred because most students have consistently met the school’s uniform expectations and I commend them for making this a focus this term. There are still a small number of students that continue to not make this a priority and will not be allowed the privilege of wearing the jersey until they have addressed issues around the following: mullets or carved hair styles, skirts too short, facial hair, hair not tied up, incorrect uniform worn, too much jewellery, nail polish and incorrect shoes.
If all issues are addressed and uniform expectations are met and maintained Year 12 will earn a third day for Terms 2 and 3.
This is a definite possibility but the whole year group needs to work together on this. Let’s make it happen!!
UOW DISCOVERY DAY
The UOW Discovery Day was attended by 60 Year 12 students who travelled to the Wollongong Campus for a taster of uni life. Students enrolled in specific subjects and activities for the day and engaged in information sessions regarding various course options available. Thanks must go to Ms Arenas who organised the day and supported the students.
SWIMMING CARNIVAL
The St John’s swimming carnival was held in week 4 with the whole school attending for the first time in 3 years. It was a hot day but this didn’t dampen the spirit of the students, particularly Year 12, whose enthusiasm was evident during the war cries and through the number of participants swimming to support their houses. All the Year 12 students who attended the day are to be commended on their leadership and involvement in such a positive manner. They finished the day with the traditional Year 12 novelty race which was a highlight of the carnival.
PANCAKE TUESDAY
The Year 12 leaders again stepped up to prepare and sell pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. All funds raised will go to Project Compassion which will be a focus again for Lent. I encourage all students to reflect on what they can do this Lent for others.
HELPING HANDS AWARDS
Year 12 have developed as a cohort in the area of community service. As further recognition of those who step up everyday and be the hands of God for others, students can nominate each other for the weekly Helping Hand award.
Students can nominate a peer which must link to the school values and/or learning dispositions. Each student nominated receives a positive affirmation and one winner is randomly picked each week to receive the Helping Hand badge.

SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS
Keira Buckpitt has had a busy start to 2023. At the end of last year Keira was Nationally Identified as a Pathway athlete for 2023 by Surfing Australia and recently competed at The Tweed Coast Pro Junior finishing 3rd out of a start of 40 competitors. Keira surfed 4 heats in one day and landed 0.50 off getting second the clock beat her. Keira knocked out a few big names and displayed amazing sportsmanship and awesome surfing skill. Congratulations Keira and good luck on the waves for 2023.
Sienna Clarke recently played in the TPS National Series which was aired on Kao Sports and hosted by Braith Anasta and finished as leading girl with rounds of +2 and +3 as well as placing 3rd overall. Sienna will also be competing in the Australian Junior Ameteaur tournament in Tasmania in April, we wish her good luck.
Jarrah Treweek & Harry Tan
The Laurie Daley Cup started on the 4th February and Jarrah and Harry played their first game for the Illawarra Dragons against the Riverina Bulls. The Dragons took out the win 52-6, Jarrah (Number 12) scored a try and set up two. Harry (Number 15) played a strong game in defense.
Recently, they played Northern River Titans again, scoring the win 56-6 with Jarrah contributing to the total. Harry unfortunately was sidelined with a knee injury.
The results for the competition for the U18 Illawarra South Coast Dragons:
Round 1: 52-6
Round 2: 16-40
Round 3: 56-6
Round 4: 36-22
Round 5: 35-28
These results ensure that they will take out first place in the Southern Conference and will play second place in the Northern Conference next week. The winner will play in the Grand Final. Congratulations to Jarrah and Harry and good luck for the remainder of the competition.
NSW STATE YOUTH PARLIAMENT
Charly Poulton and Dylan Tsilifis have been chosen as representatives for NSW State Youth Parliament for the Kiama and South Coast Electorates. As part of their role, they will engage in parliamentary sittings and draft bills for their respective committees of Women’s Affairs and Rural and Regional Affairs.
EASTER EGG RAFFLE
Year 12 are organising an Easter Egg Raffle for the school. Students need to bring in Easter eggs to contribute to this “EGGSTRAVAGANZA”. All Yr 12 students who contribute eggs and other fun “Eastery” goods will receive a Community Service Merit. The raffle will be drawn after the Easter Liturgy on the Wednesday of Week 11.

On Tuesday 28 February, Hospitality students saw the Summer out with a fantastic day in the Nowra business district. Students were hosted by Old Salt Distillery, The Bearded Brewer, Ponte and Bundanon. From front of house managers, master bread makers, coffee roasters, executive chefs, bar tenders and event managers; students had the privilege to listen to their personal stories, including the struggles and successes achieved in this dynamic industry.

Rural Fire Service Training Opportunity
Regional Development Australia Far South Coast and the NSW Rural Fire Service are delivering the South Coast Youth Volunteer program in 2023. The program will be a 3-day practical training workshop delivered in 3 consecutive days for up to 20 students from SJE; June 1, 2 & 5 in South Nowra. All transport will be provided.
The qualification and experience will be highly beneficial for anyone seeking a pathway in emergency services.

YEAR 10 PASS
We enjoy PASS because we love sport in general, it is astonishing. We love learning about new skills. In particular, how to save someone's life. We have the chance to learn new sports that we may have never played. PASS teaches us how to be fit and take care of ourselves and a great way to connect with our PEERS. At the moment we are learning about aquatics and have the chance to gain our Bronze Medallion. To do this we need to complete a 400 metres swim of survival strokes (on a good day Caydan will take an hour to do 400m, unlike myself who will smash it in 10 minutes).

In sport this term we are doing rotations between in school sport, tennis and beach sports. I enjoy being out of school for sport and having the chance to choose your own groups.We enjoy the chance to exercise. The weather has been really good for the sports we are doing this term.

We are learning about Australian sports identity and we have an assignment where we have to make our own modified Australian Sport based on traditional sports such as netball, AFL, Oztag, League Tag and Cricket. We enjoy the chance to go out and play sports with our friends and the many different games we play. It is great to develop skills in all sports and can help you find a sport that you may like but have not played before. PASS helps you develop communication, confidence with others and develops new friendships.

TALLOWA DAM TRIP
It was a good experience, I think everyone enjoyed it and developed new skills. It was educational and we all learnt a lot. The teachers made it very fun and helped us to overcome any challenges we had on the overnight camp. It was a good way for everyone to become better friends and learn new things about each other, everyone worked together and helped each other out. I am excited to go on more overnight trips and gain more understanding when camping in the bush.

TALLOWA DAM TRIP
The trip to Tallowa Dam was a very good experience for me, we all developed new skills and learnt how to work collaboratively. It was a great time to make new friends and to experience the environment around us. Our teachers made all of our experiences very fun and allowed us to be free and have a good time. It was also very educational, we learnt many new things about the environment and one another. Even though there were a few challenges along the way, everyone participated and worked together to solve them. I would love to go on another trip and experience it all again.

PROJECTS
This term in bushcraft I have really enjoyed The Old Ways project. In the project we have been tasked with making a tool from the old ways using only natural materials and applying techniques and strategies that were used back in the day. I choose to make a flint tip spear using a sapling, a flit rock and even learning to make cordage to tie on the flint tip. I think this project is a great way for people to become active, learn skills and problem solve while having fun.

YEAR 7 CAMP LEADERS
Year 7 camp was an eventful experience. As leaders at this camp we faced challenges from the weather complications to learning how to control a group of younger students. Although the camp was cut short , the time we spent there was exciting and allowed us to experience and learn new things. We led group activities, helped the year 7’s with set up and got to know the students by helping them make friends as well as feel more comfortable at the school, which was personally my favourite part.

A few weeks back me and over 30 other year 10 students participated in the Year 7 Camp. We led the group activities, set up the camp, helped cook and gave them guidance throughout the experience. My favourite part was getting to know the students.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL
This year the St. John's community was gifted with a beautiful day for our first whole school carnival since 2019. The vibe was electrifying with both staff and students eagerly awaiting the return of a whole school carnival. The day was a huge success for all students and staff. A special mention to the cheering efforts of all houses, with Benedict taking out the house chant competition. The relays were taken out by Polding, with the staff team a close second. A huge thank you to staff and our amazing SRC for assisting to make this day a memorable one. Mrs. Frew

SWIMMING CARNIVAL - YEAR 12 REFLECTIONS
It was a glorious day, with perfect weather for a swimming carnival. The temperature was 100 degrees, with the pool being the only escape from the elements. It was the first swimming carnival at the school for students in Years 7 to 9, everyone was very eager to get into the pool, including Miss Kelly, who "fell in" by the force of the Year 12 students. House spirit was in the air with students ready to win house points for their colour house. Obviously, Mackillop prevailed "Let go Mackillop".

We were so pleased to have the opportunity of a swimming carnival after many years of not being able to have one. It did not disappoint, as everybody had an amazing day swimming, showing house spirit and cheering peers on. It was a very fun day and it was great to see the school community come together and support one another.

The 2023 swimming carnival was a terrific day! So many people were giving it a go and swimming with their mates to earn points and get in the pool as it was a hot and steamy day! Thanks to the staff and every volunteer who helped on the day, it ran smoothly and was such a memorable day!!

The swimming carnival was great to have back after not having one since 2019. It was really fun to come early in the morning and set up our colour house areas and time the 100m races. The day was really fun and it was great to get the house all together for the house chants! My favourite part of the day was doing the races with my friends and the year 12 novelty race at the end of the day! -

YEAR 7 2024 OPEN NIGHT - 8TH MARCH 2023
The Year 7 2024 Open Night was held this week and provided a great opportunity to meet prospective St John’s students and families. A big thank you to all of those who assisted with the night and showed what our St Johns school community is all about. It was a great night and so lovely to see so many come along. We can’t wait to welcome you to our school next year.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - 13TH MARCH 2023
The St John’s P&F would like to offer a reminder that the P&F AGM will be held next Monday 13th of March commencing at 6:00 pm. Everyone is welcome, feel free to come along and meet our new principal Mr Wayne Marshall. As previously mentioned by coming along to these meetings it’s a great way to get involved, put forth any suggestions or ideas and find out more about the school and the roles of the Parents & Friends Committee. YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING
On Thursday 2 March Atlee, Christina and myself attended the Youth Advisory Committee Meeting for the Shoalhaven City Council.
The purpose of the committee is to represent the interests and views of young people and provide an opportunity to discuss issues of concern. It also acts as a mechanism for them to experience local government and community affairs.
The meeting commenced with an Introduction Activity, a committee overview and priorities for 2023 . We looked over the relevant policies and procedures and discussed ways to assist youth and the wider community have better access to support and services in the Shoalhaven.

GIRLS TOUCH FOOTBALL
On the 3rd February three St John's teams participated in the Diocesan Girls touch Championships. It was a cool and wet day in Wollongong and despite the trying conditions, the girls played some amazing touch.The girls all showed great talent and sportsmanship on the day. Our under 13’s and Open’s team both finished 5th overall on the day and our 15’s team took out 4th place. A big congratulations goes to Ruby Marshall who was selected in the Opens CCC Diocese team and to Alisha Mustapic who was selected as shadow. Congratulations also goes to Hannah Phillips who was selected as shadow for the 15’s side. Well done to all our players for a fun and entertaining day of touch. You all made your coaches proud!
We would also like to thank our referees for the day. Max Marshall, Noah Hinkley and Taj Barrett were amazing role models for our school and were consistent and fair in all games. Thank you boys!
NSW ALL SCHOOLS TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Friday 24 February a number of St John's students travelled to Sydney International Regatta Centre at Penrith Lakes to compete in the NSW All Schools Triathlon Championship Event.
Overall we had a really fun day. We cheered each other on, even when our lungs were giving in! We kept pushing ourselves to do our absolute best whilst thinking about a relaxing bus trip home.
We all won in our eyes, but in reality we made the St John’s community proud too.
A highlight of the day was the Senior boys team, made up of Hugh Vaughan, Harry Ludman and Cameron Harrison who took out 3rd place in the CCC and 5th overall.
Congratulations to all competitors and thanks to the staff who helped organise the day.

NSW STATE ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Nicholas McGill of Year 10 competed at the NSW State Athletics Championships from 25 to 27 February 2023.
He is now the NSW State Champion for the Under 16 2000m Steeple Chase and looking forward to heading to the Nationals in Brisbane in April.
He also competed in the 3000m coming 5th in the State and smashing out a 2 sec PB. In the 1500m he came 8th.
A huge weekend with a big schedule but he rose to the challenge and has certainly come away with more knowledge and more drive for his next competition.

SCHOOL BUS TRAVEL
Dear Parents
Students travelling on a School Bus to and from school are required to have a valid school bus pass for the school service they are catching. If a valid school pass cannot be shown a fare will be charged. In the event the school bus pass is lost, some form of student ID is to be shown whilst obtaining a replacement pass (fee applies). You can help make your child’s school bus journey more pleasant by ensuring your child has a valid school bus pass and presents it to the driver in the morning AND afternoon. Parents are reminded that the School Free Travel is only valid between home and school as per the conditions on the back of the pass. Fares will be charged for all other journeys. Skateboards/Scooters/Bicycles are not permitted on the bus.
