Marshall_Wayne.jpgCHANGE TO PRINCIPAL / ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL - 2025

As all would be aware by now I will be absent from St John’s for 2025. The Principal at Corpus Christi resigned very late in the year (last week) and an Acting Principal was sought. All other schools in the Diocese have either new Assistant Principals or newish Principals – except St John’s. So I was asked to assist and consider moving to Corpus Christi for 2025. Such a difficult decision as St john’s is a beautiful place to be.

Given that we are so lucky to have Mr Eirth, who can step up into the Acting Principal role so easily, I reluctantly accepted. Now that this has settled in, I will be 100% for my new temporary role, as will Mr Eirth.  I thank the P&F for their thoughts and words and the well wishes from all others.

BISHOP BRIAN'S SCHOOL CAPTAIN'S RETREAT

Our School Captains spent three days last week with the Captain’s from our other eight secondary schools in the Wollongong Diocese. The setting was the magnificent Marist retreat centre, The Hermitage in Mittagong (Le Rosey section). Bishop Brian and Mr Hill (Director of Schools) attended all days.

Our leaders had the task of presenting their view of St John’s through the theme – It is what we do, it is who we are. They were fantastic, as were the other school leaders. Our students were not overprepared, like some, but spoke from the heart with feeling and meaning. They love and are proud of our school, our location and our Shoalhaven surrounds. They love what makes us St John’s. I was very proud to see their passion.

Chloe:

Myself, Daniel, Tom and Leilani were privileged to have attended the 2025 Bishops Captains Retreat. We explored many amazing things within the faith, heard amazing stories from both Bishop Brian and Mr Peter Hill, and formed together what we believe a Catholic leader is. I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to explore deeper into my faith and know what awaits me in the next year as I develop my skills of being a Catholic leader. We were able to discuss as Catholic leaders what we hope we can implement in our school, and how we can build upon the amazing community that St. Johns is.

Daniel:

From Wednesday, November 27th to Friday, November 29th, Chloe, Tom, Leilani and I were given the opportunity to attend Bishop Brian’s Captain’s Retreat. During the retreat, we engaged in faith-based leadership activities and were provided knowledge and guidance through eye-catching stories and testimonies from Bishop Brian, Mr Peter Hill as well as other staff members. We interacted with the 9 other Catholic high schools present and learnt a lot about ourselves and each other resulting in many new friendships being made. On the final day of the retreat, we were given the opportunity to present how we would demonstrate leadership in our school through our motto and key values. Alongside this, we celebrated mass and came together as a Catholic community. We hope to bring back what we learnt from the retreat and to use this for the betterment of our school.

STAFF SPIRITUALITY DAY - HERMITAGE MITTAGONG

On Monday 2nd December, the staff attended the beautiful Hermitage Retreat Centre in Mittagong (La Valla section) for our annual Spiritualty Day. Wonderfully organised by Mr Comensoli and Mrs Anderson and led by Catholic Education Office Staff, we had a serene day exploring what ‘Pax Christi’ (Peace of Christ) truly means for us. This is our College motto.

HIGH PERFORMIMG SCHOOLS VISIT

Last week Mr Eirth and I joined the other Principals and leading staff on a visit to the high performing schools in the Sydney Diocese. At Menai, Engadine, Wakeley and Hoxton Park we saw schools that were somewhat similar to ours. Most were average schools who are now high performing ones. We explored their journey from average to excellence in educational outcomes. We came away with many things to consider implementing.

The findings from this trip and the results of our four yearly Cyclic Inquiry (a process of review every four years) earlier this year, will form the future direction of St John’s for the next four year cycle.

SURVEY OF PARENTS REGARDING POSSIBLE NAME CHANGE

At last year’s School Leaders Retreat with Bishop Brian, each school presented and then the Principals had lunch with their students. I was immediately challenged by the students as to why the other Catholic schools were Colleges and St John’s wasn’t. We had a lively discussion as the students were so proud of their school and articulated that we are as good as any other school and deserved to be a College as well.

Earlier this year I surveyed the staff about a possible name change to St John the Evangelist Catholic College. 64% wanted the change and they were asked to leave comment if they wished. The staff who wanted no change mainly stated cost involved. The staff who wanted change talked of the growth of the school (as we complete our 35th year in 2024), the growth of Nowra, that our main opposition (NAC) is a College , the name change could lead to better learning expectations and outcomes etc.

So I will be sending a survey to all parents early next week,  seeking your advice.

But a few things have been raised. COST. There is minimal cost involved as we will use stationary and other printed items throughout next year. Their will be no added cost for parents as their will be no uniform change. Our uniform says SJE or St John’s. There will be some cost to the school to update some external signage.

There will be no increase in fees as a result of the change. Our fees are set by the Diocese and this will continue.

I thank you for reading this and look forward to the feedback.

ADVENT SEASON

As I write this Newsletter I recognise that we light the first Advent candle at mass this weekend and the lightning of both the first and second candles the following weekend. The first candle, which is purple, symbolises ’hope’. It is sometimes called the ‘prophecy candle’ in remembrance of the prophets, especially Isiah, who foretold the birth of Christ. It represents the expectation felt in anticipation of the coming Messiah.

The second candle, also purple, represents ‘faith’. It is called the ‘Bethlehem candle’ as a reminder of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem.

The third candle is pink and symbolizes ‘joy’. It is called the “Shepard’s Candle,” and is pink because rose is a liturgical colour for joy. The third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday and is meant to remind us of the joy that the world experienced at the birth of Jesus, as well as the joy that the faithful have as we pass the midpoint of Advent.

On the fourth week of Advent, we light the final purple candle to mark the final week of prayer and penance as we wait for the birth of our Savior. This final candle, the “Angel’s Candle,” symbolizes peace. It reminds us of the message of the angels: “Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men.”

The white candle is placed in the middle of the wreath and lit on Christmas Eve. This candle is called the “Christ Candle” and represents the life of Christ. The colour white is for purity—because Christ is our sinless, pure Savior.

I wish all a wonderful Advent season.

PROPOSED SOCIAL MEDIA BAN FOR UNDER 16'S - WHAT IT MEAN'S FOR FAMILIES AND SCHOOLS

The Australian Government has announced plans to implement new laws by the end of 2025 to restrict access to social media for children under the age of 16. This bold move aims to address growing concerns about the negative impact of social media on young people’s mental health, wellbeing, and development.

Why the Change?

In recent years, parents, educators, and mental health experts have raised alarms about the harmful effects of excessive social media use on children and teenagers. The proposed ban is a response to mounting evidence that highlights how social media can adversely affect younger users.

Social_Media_Banned.jpg

Key Concerns About Social Media:

  1. Mental Health Impact: Studies show that extended time on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat is linked to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and feelings of inadequacy among young people. Constant exposure to curated images of others' lives can foster unhealthy comparisons and erode self-esteem.
  2. Cyberbullying: Online platforms often amplify bullying behavior, with many teenagers experiencing harassment and abuse that extends beyond the schoolyard. The anonymity of social media can make these interactions especially harmful.
  3. Addiction and Distraction: Social media is designed to be engaging, and for many teenagers, it becomes an addictive habit that disrupts sleep, study routines, and in-person relationships.
  4. Exposure to Inappropriate Content: Despite age restrictions, younger teens are frequently exposed to harmful material, including explicit content, violent imagery, and misinformation, which can impact their emotional and intellectual development.
  5. Data Privacy Concerns: Many social media platforms collect vast amounts of personal data from users, often without their full understanding. For minors, this poses significant risks to their privacy and safety.

How Will the Law Work?

The details of the legislation are still being finalised, but key features are likely to include:

  • Mandatory Age Verification: Social media companies will be required to implement robust systems to verify users' ages, such as parental consent protocols or ID checks.
  • Stronger Parental Controls: Parents may gain more tools to monitor and restrict their children's online activity.
  • Significant Penalties for Platforms: Companies that fail to comply with the law may face hefty fines or legal action.

Supporting Families and Schools

For Catholic schools like ours, these changes present both challenges and opportunities. While social media can offer benefits when used responsibly, the proposed laws align with our mission to nurture students’ holistic wellbeing.

Our school is committed to:

  • Promoting healthy online habits through digital literacy programs.
  • Encouraging open conversations between students, parents, and teachers about the dangers of excessive screen time.
  • Offering pastoral care and counselling to students who may struggle with the transition or face social pressures related to the ban.

What Can Families Do Now?

As the legislation takes shape, families can take proactive steps to prepare for a healthier relationship with technology:

  • Set Boundaries: Encourage designated screen-free times, such as during meals or before bedtime (at least 1 hour before sleep should be screen-free).
  • Model Responsible Use: Show children how to balance online engagement with offline activities.
  • Foster Open Communication: Talk regularly with your child about their online experiences and the importance of protecting their mental health.

A Shared Responsibility

As a Catholic community, we are called to work together to protect the dignity and wellbeing of every child. The proposed social media ban is a step toward safeguarding young people from the pressures and pitfalls of an increasingly digital world. With guidance from families, schools, and the wider community, we can help our students thrive in faith and in life.

We will continue to keep you updated as these changes unfold throughout 2025.

Simis_Abbey.jpgAs we approach the end of the year, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all Year 7 families for your support and contributions throughout this important first year of high school. Together, we have navigated many challenges, and I am incredibly proud of the resilience and growth our students have demonstrated.

YEAR 7 REFLECTION DAY

On Friday the 15th of November, the Year 7 cohort participated in their first Reflection Day—a day to pause, connect, and grow together. The day began with a beautiful liturgy inspired by the Emmaus Story, which set a reflective tone. Students then came together for a year group photo, celebrating our motto: “With Jesus, we can reach the highest of heights.”

The journey continued with a trip to Callala, where activities focused on spirituality and building stronger connections within our group. It was heartwarming to see students engage meaningfully and grow in their understanding of themselves and each other. A huge thank you to Mr Lopez for coordinating such a meaningful day and to the teachers who led the activities with such care and dedication.

TALENT SHOW

In Week 6, Year 7 came together for their highly anticipated Talent Show, showcasing the incredible array of skills within our cohort. The audience was beautifully behaved, showing respect and encouragement to every performer. Thank you to our standout acts!:

  • Jazz Annan’s hilarious comedy routine
  • Max Hayes bringing the house down with All I Want for Christmas Is You
  • The Year 7 Girls Rock Band, who’ve worked tirelessly over months to deliver an epic performance
  • Joe Berriman and Matthew Gavin Laws, rocking out with their high-energy set
  • Taylah Webb’s self-written drama monologue, which captivated the crowd
  • Milly Owens’ stunning solo piano performance
  • And, of course, the teachers’ spirited Nutbush routine to close the show!

It was a show filled with talent, laughter, and unity—a true reflection of the wonderful community we have in Year 7.

THANK YOU AND FAREWELL TO 2024

As this year concludes, I feel privileged to have been part of your children’s journey as they transitioned into high school. They have laid a strong foundation for the years ahead, and I can’t wait to see them continue to grow and shine as they move into Year 8.

Wishing you all a safe, joyful, and blessed Christmas. I look forward to seeing everyone again in 2025!

As we approach the end of another school year, we reflect on the incredible journey Year 8 students have taken in 2024. It has been a year filled with growth, success, and memorable experiences.

A particular highlight was MPower Me Day and the Reflection Days, which provided students with opportunities to deepen their self-awareness, strengthen friendships, and embody our school motto, "Let your light shine."

Our students have also excelled beyond the classroom. From outstanding achievements in the creative arts to representing the school in debating and sports, Year 8 have demonstrated their talents, resilience, and commitment. We are so proud of their accomplishments!

Looking ahead to 2025, we are excited about the Year 9 camp, which will take place at Cataract Activity Centre, Appin, during Term 1, Week 10. The camp promises to be an exciting experience, filled with challenges and opportunities for personal growth. Year 9 will also bring new elective classes, the Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM) program, further leadership opportunities, and plenty of exciting new opportunities for our students.

On behalf of the Year 8 pastoral team, we wish all students and their families a happy and safe summer holiday. May your Christmas be filled with joy and peace. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2025, ready for another fantastic year of learning and growth!

        GIRLS ABORIGINAL SPIRITUALITY DAY

On Thursday the 21st of November, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and dance troupe were involved in our Girls Spirituality Day which was conducted by Aunty Chris Finney, Aunty Kate Nye and Aunty Elizabeth Luland. The purpose of this day was to reflect on the importance of women and culture.

We started the day with a smoking ceremony to cleanse and walk in the footsteps of our ancestors, followed by a welcome to Country. Students understood the meaning of the sacred space and how it tells a story of life, morals, culture and prayer. Students were invited to come forth to connect the elements of mother earth and feel the earth, water and oil. The ceremony reminded everyone of when they were born and the old ways of our peoples and the journey of spirit.

We were privileged to have Elizabeth conduct a dance workshop which taught the girls the movements of the black cockatoo and the story of the local area. It was rewarding to see the resilience and discipline shown by the girls throughout each of the different dance stages.

We ended the day with a deep meditation and spiritual reflection which focused on the spiritual bond Aboriginal people have with the land and how we can include culture into our own lives to be the best versions of ourselves. It was an eye-opening experience for staff and students and a day filled with lots of positivity, smiles and self reflection.

        The Changing Nature Of Careers

Careers look different to how they used to – once upon a time you picked uni, a trade, or a job, and that was pretty much it for the rest of your working life. Now, tradies get degrees in management, professionals take short courses to round out their qualifications, and around 39% of students work and study at the same time.

Apprenticeships and traineeships are great because you generally don’t need a lot of skills or knowledge when you start, and you’ll get quality on-the-job training as well as classroom based training. Plus, you’ll be earning an income all along the way.

Skilling Australia Foundation found in 2019 that VET graduates had:

        • Higher starting salaries – $56k vs $54k for uni grads
        • A higher rate of employment – 78% vs 68% for uni grads
        • Apprentices had a graduate employment rate of 92%

What’s the difference between an apprenticeship and traineeship?

The main difference is usually the industry – apprenticeships tend to be for more technical trades, while trainees might learn business skills or job-specific skills they need before they can be fully employed. Traineeships are also generally shorter than apprenticeships.

Finding a traineeship or apprenticeship can be a great choice – here’s why:

        • You’ll enjoy satisfying and practical work, and in many trades you’ll avoid being stuck behind a desk.
        • Get paid while you learn, and start living in the ‘real world’ sooner.
        • You’ll probably have a job before you finish, and if you do move employers, you’ll have recognisable skills that make you more employable.
        • You generally don’t need great marks to get started.

There are also usually a range of incentives for businesses to take on trainees and apprentices, which means more are available and there will be lots of support to make sure you finish your training.

        How do I get started?

First, put together a resume (also known as a list of good stuff you’ve done). Include everything, and get it checked by someone who loves you (they’ll point out the good things you’ve missed) and someone who’s good with writing, like a teacher or family member

Finally, start job searching. You need to go and find them. But it doesn’t have to be difficult – there are heaps of apprenticeships and traineeships in just about every area, including regional and remote places.

Here’s how to search for an apprenticeship or traineeship

Let people know you’re looking. Tell your teachers, friends, or parents (and their friends). Word of mouth is still a great way to get a job.

Search job sites. Simply googling apprenticeships or traineeships in your area will give you a good start. You might also like to try searching popular job sites like SEEK or Indeed.

Look at government websites. Most countries usually have a government website built especially for apprentices and trainees to look for opportunities, including support options and other handy info. Here are some government sites you might like to browse:

        Find out more

So, if you’d like to earn a good wage, enjoy a secure and rewarding job, and earn while you learn, getting an apprenticeship or traineeship could be the right option for you. And we can guarantee it’ll be a whole lot more fun than spending your life on the couch.

If you’d like more help, or any advice on finding an apprenticeship talk to Ms Arenas. Or you might like to read more resources on the website here.

Open Universities Australia can help you get into many university degrees without an ATAR.

        Here's how it works:

        1. You find your chosen degree on their website
        2. Instead of applying directly for the degree, you enrol in the first few subjects as an online student. There won't be any entry requirements.
        3. Once you successfully pass those subjects, you'll be able to transfer into the full degree. You can keep studying online, or ask for an on-campus place.

You'll earn credit for your subjects, which means you won't fall behind everyone who enrolled the traditional way. You'll be studying towards your degree from day one.

For example, you could include a diploma course in a similar area of study as your preferred degree course.
