THANK YOU FOR A GREAT TERM 1 !
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we continue to settle into the new year, as a staff, we want to take a moment to express our sincere thanks for your ongoing support and partnership this term. Your involvement in your child or the children in your care’s education plays an essential role in fostering a strong and positive learning environment and we are grateful for the contributions you make to this collective effort.
As mentioned in previous newsletters, we are pleased to report that we have started the term on a very positive note. Students are demonstrating increased readiness to learn with a noticeable commitment to their learning growth. Their involvement in class activities, discussions, and collaborative projects has been fantastic, and we believe this is a direct result of the strong support and encouragement they are receiving both at school and at home. The culture of learning seems to be thriving and we are excited to witness what the rest of the term and the year brings
Additionally, it should come as no surprise, our behaviour data has shown encouraging trends. We are pleased to share that behaviour incidents across the school are lower than in previous years, reflecting a more focused and respectful approach to learning and engagement with staff and students.
In previous newsletters, I mentioned several significant whole-school changes that we have implemented this year to support peaceful relationships and excellence in learning across our community. To truly understand the impact and effect we are having, we want to hear the voice of our community at all levels. As such, we will be surveying staff, students and parents to hear their thoughts on the direction of St John The Evangelist Catholic High School.
Below is a link to the Parent/Carer Survey for 2025. If you have a few moments, it would be greatly appreciated if we could hear your voice on the following areas:
- Updated SJE Graduate Profile
- SJE Learning Culture
- SJE Community Partnerships
- SJE Catholic Identity
We look forward to continuing this momentum throughout the year and remain grateful for your dedication to your child's success.
Wishing you and your family a wonderful and productive remainder of the term.

Acting Principal
ONLINE FORM - EXTENDED ABSENCE
A new online Notification of Extended Absence form has been created for parents to use for extended absences (absence greater than five school days). This user-friendly form simplifies the process for parents, eliminating the need for printing or downloading documents. Now, parents can conveniently complete the application entirely online.
HOW THIS BENEFITS PARENTS
Accessing the application form is now easier than ever with the form working on both mobile and desktop platforms. Parents can complete the application electronically and can also send the application for multiple students across CEDoW schools.
A link to the form can be accessed here: https://forms.dow.catholic.edu.au/to/yVv9DA
ACCEPTANCE AND NON-ACCEPTANCE OF THE EXTENDED ABSENCE
The principal will make a decision regarding the Extended Absence application based upon the reasons for the absence and the impact of the absence on the student’s learning. Parents will receive an Acknowledgement of the Extended Absence and a determination by the principal of acceptance or non-acceptance. If a parent wishes their child to undertake an extended absence for the purposes of travel they must provide documentation indicating the intended dates and locations of travel. Additionally, the parent must indicate on the form the purpose of the travel and the circumstances that make it necessary for the travel to be undertaken outside the school holiday period. The principal will only accept travel absences for exceptional circumstances.
Please reach out to the school if you have any questions regarding Extended Absence.

It was amazing to see so many parents at our Parent Information Night on Tuesday. Your engagement and support are invaluable as we continue to work together to ensure a smooth transition for our Year 7 students. PALS teachers will be sending out emails introducing themselves and will also provide a copy of the presentation that was shared on the night.
As we approach the end of our first term together, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible start our Year 7 students have had. Transitioning into high school is a significant milestone, and I am so proud of the way our students have embraced this new chapter with enthusiasm, resilience, and a strong sense of community.
One of the standout moments of the term was our Year 7 camp. Over three days, students had the opportunity to form new friendships, strengthen existing ones, and challenge themselves in ways they never imagined. Whether it was tackling high rope courses, working as a team in problem-solving activities, or simply stepping out of their comfort zones, each student showed remarkable courage and determination. It was a joy to witness their growth, not only in confidence but also in their ability to support and encourage one another.
In addition to their fantastic efforts at camp, Year 7 students have consistently demonstrated a positive attitude towards their studies and school life. Their enthusiasm for learning, willingness to participate, and respect for one another have set a wonderful tone for the year ahead. A particular highlight has been the way they have taken pride in wearing their uniform. The standard of presentation has been exceptional, and we appreciate the effort students and families have put into ensuring they look their best every day.
As we wind down the term, I want to thank our students, families, and staff for making this start to Year 7 such a memorable and successful one. I hope everyone enjoys a well-earned break, and I look forward to seeing all our students refreshed and ready for an exciting Term 2!
‘Be gentle and humble in heart.'
Ms Sophie Daley
Year 7 Leaders of Wellbeing
As we approach the end of Term 1, it’s a great time for students to reflect on how they are tracking—both in terms of their learning and their overall approach to school. Are they achieving their goals? Are they staying organised and making the most of each day?
One area of focus this term has been punctuality. Getting to class on time is essential—every minute counts. Students arriving late to class without a valid reason will be recorded as fractional truancy. If lateness becomes a pattern, parents and carers will be contacted to work together on a plan for improvement.
We had a fantastic day at Shoalhaven Heads for our Year 8 Reflection Day, embracing the theme of environmental stewardship. The day began with a beautiful liturgy before students rotated through a series of activities including beach games, a scenic walk, and a fun trivia session (despite students saying the music questions were “for old people”!). A huge thank you to Mr Lopez for organising such a memorable day.

PHONE POLICY REMINDER
A reminder that students are not to have their phones out during school hours. If you need to contact your child during the day, please do so through the front office.
If a student has their phone confiscated three times, they will be placed on an in-school withdrawal. Ongoing breaches of the policy may lead to students being required to hand in their phone at the front office daily, or to leave it at home. Continued defiance of this expectation will result in suspension.
Our goal is to support student learning and encourage healthy, face-to-face social connections—both of which are impacted by unnecessary phone use. Students have been provided with a hard copy of their timetable and should be using their diaries; there is no need to check Compass on their phones throughout the day.
LOOKING AHEAD TO TERM 2
Next term, we will hold a Year 8 Information Evening to discuss the Subject Selection process for Year 9. This is an exciting milestone for students as they begin thinking about their learning pathways. We encourage all families to attend.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership this term. We’re looking forward to an even stronger Term 2!
'With Jesus we can reach the highest of heights.'

Year 8 Leader of Wellbeing
walawaani njindiwan,
Gooroon has had a busy and thriving beginning to the year. We welcomed ninety three Aboriginal students and their families and carers to St John’s this year - twenty four from Year 7 alone. Many of our team also volunteered their time and expertise (thank you Uncle Archie and Uncle Sean) on Year 7 Retreat.
Open night was a great success with many prospective students and their parents interested in the role Gooroon plays at St John’s in supporting Aboriginal culture, students and families. Once again, we thank ours boys dance troupe and Uncle Archie for their welcoming of community with Dance and Didj into our school.

The Young Koori Womens’ Program run by Waminda has recommenced at St John’s and we are pleased that a number of girls are attending this. This year St John’s is also proudly represented by Jake Swan, Hannah Doyle, Laycee Bannon- Harrison, Eli Gow and Kilarni Aldridge on the Shoalhaven City Council’s Student Youth Advisory Committee.
Assemblies play a significant role sharing our values and in connecting staff, students and families as a St John’s community. We would like to thank Aunty Chris, Gooroon staff and students that contributed to a powerful Sorry Day Assembly and also to our Closing the Gap Assembly presentation which was followed by a very successful Closing the Gap BBQ.
As assessment season comes upon us we have noticed a wonderful increase in students attending Homework Centre. A reminder that the Homework Centre is open between 3:00 and 4:30pm every Wednesday. Afternoon tea is provided and all students are welcomed. Teachers and a Homework Centre Co-ordinator are on hand to provide support. A reminder that Gooroon is open every lunch and an AEA is always available to support students with school work or assessment during Lunch 2 (on top of the support they offer in class).

This week will see us running our second Parent and Carers meeting since 2019. Last year’s meeting was a great success and we are looking forward to continuing the building of school and community relationships.

A special thank you to the ongoing work of the Gooroon team: Aunty Chris, Jo Coleman, Uncle Archie, Sean Grey, Deb Millington and Katie Nye who are committed in supporting the education, and culture and identity of our young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island men and women.
We wish all families a special and peaceful upcoming Easter,
Thank you for your continuing support

A huge thank you to Mrs Isemonger, Mrs Clarke and Mrs Prayetno for your assistance.
On Tuesday, March 18, the Year 12 Hospitality Food and Beverage students prepared and served a High Tea Menu for staff to purchase during lunchtime at the Peace Lily Cafe. The menu was a hit among the staff, making the cafe a bustling hub of activity as everyone enjoyed the high tea.
YEAR 12 GEOGRAPHY - JERVIS BAY
Last week the Year 12 Geography students had a great day of fieldwork in Jervis Bay to complement their study of the Great Southern Reef ecosystem. They began the day with an overview chat about the reef and a snorkel / freedive session with the team from Woebegone Freedive, to see the reef for themselves. Then the afternoon was spent doing a range of other fieldwork along the beach and headland, examining the factors that influence the reef.
