WELCOME BACK TO TERM 2
Dear Parents and Carers,
I would like to welcome you all back to Term 2 and hope that you all had a nice and peaceful Easter.
Before we look toward the term ahead, I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the recent passing of Pope Francis, a significant figure of spiritual and moral leadership for our Catholic community. We take a moment to honour his legacy and join Bishop Brian Mascord and the entire Catholic Church in mourning the passing of Pope Francis. We give thanks for his compassionate leadership, unwavering commitment to the Gospel and the message of peace and compassion that continue to inspire the mission of our Catholic schools here in the Diocese of Wollongong. Bishop Brian’s full statement can be found by clicking here.
In reflecting on the success of Term 1, I truly hope that we can continue to carry with us, the optimism and energy that marked an exciting and positive shift in the St John’s learning culture. The collaboration between staff, students, and families over the term laid an impressive foundation for the ongoing growth and success of our students, one we look forward to building upon.
Thursday 1st May saw Mrs Julie Lawrence and Ms Sonia Diaz lead our school community in a very special commemoration for ANZAC day 2025. We were honoured to be led in prayer by Chaplain Nigel Porter who opened the word of the Gospel and reminded us of the highest form of Christian love and charity, Agape/Agapi, the love in service of others. He encouraged each and everyone of us to live agape/agapi in our daily lives, using our unique gifts to make the lives of others better. We were also extremely privileged to hear from Midshipman Bridgette Fairs, graduating student of 2024, who so eloquently articulated the true meaning of ANZAC day in that it is a glorification of war, but a solemn remembrance of those who came before and serve their country, our country, making the ultimate sacrifice to lay down their lives so that we may have all that we enjoy today.
This term, we, as a staff continue to focus on developing the learning growth of all of our students, ensuring meaningful and deep learning occurs across the school community. I truly believe that our students should be leaving us better than when they arrived, whether this be at their graduation or simply at the end of the day. We continue to encourage students to be reflective learners who engage purposefully with their learning, take responsibility for their actions, and strive to be ready to learn each day.
We look forward to your continued support in this mission and ask that you reinforce these values at home, especially the shared language of engagement, responsibility, and being ready to learn (seen below). When students hear the same messages at school and in the home, it strengthens their sense of purpose, responsibility and aspiration to grow.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support and we look forward to another term of growth, achievement, and partnership.
Kind regards
Acting Principal
UPDATE FROM THE E-SAFETY COMMISSIONER
For any parent who has watched the Netflix drama Adolescence and was left highly disturbed by the harmful impact that social media is having on young men and boys, you are not alone. As such, the e-Safety Commissioner has published the following information and resources for parents and families in response to the significant themes highlighted in the Netflix drama:
“It’s hard to think of a show that has captured the world’s attention so fully and shone a much-needed light on the dangerous impact of misogynistic content, algorithms and influencers on the minds of young men and boys.
Shockingly, despite our best efforts as parents to raise great kids, it is not a fair fight when tech companies and algorithms can influence our teenagers within seconds.
As Australia’s national online safety educator, nothing is more important to us than ensuring young people are safe to create, connect and explore the wonders of technology and the internet.
It’s what motivates us in every aspect of our work, whether we’re connecting with educators, parents and young people to develop digital literacy and resilience resources, encouraging the tech industry to take a Safety by Design approach by putting safety at the forefront of the design, or developing guidance to prevent under 16-year-olds from having accounts on certain social media services.”
E-SAFETY RESOURCES
The e-Safety Commissioner has provided the following e-Safety resources to help families navigate the risks facing young people online:
- Register for our free 45-minute parent webinar, exploring the online experiences of boys and young men, to understand the impact of social media, gaming, and influencers on attitudes, behaviours and sense of identity
- Listen to ABC Fran Kelly and eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant unpack the themes of Adolescence, including toxic masculinity and the online manosphere
- Listen to ABC Big Ideas! to hear eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant and other experts in their fields discuss how parents can better support young people to navigate the risks and threats online
- Read our blog about how eSafety is shining a light on the dark forces manipulating our teenagers
- Read eSafety's young men online research series which explores young men's experiences and how they can be supported to develop healthy and positive masculinities
- For the young person in your life: explore our resources for young people.

2025 CSNSW REGISTRATIONS
Mrs E Gray
Sports Coordinator
Sample jerseys have arrived for students to try on for size!
This will occur in our Pastoral focus lesson soon. The rules on when and how jerseys must be worn in relation to the school uniform will also be outlined at this time.
After finalising sizing and names in week 3, it is intended jerseys will be officially ordered in week 4.
Below is the final design selected for the Year 12 cohort of 2026.
SOCIAL SPORT
Year 11 will be offered an opportunity from Week 5 this term to participate in a round robin of sport competition on Wednesdays at lunch time. This is to encourage social interaction and just a time to relax with each other. Details will be provided soon.
STUDY
Just one of the main focus areas for Year 11 students and arguably the most important. It is stated that students should be looking at completing 2 hours of study per night and potentially extra on the weekend. This of course should be balanced with physical exercise, recreational activities and potentially some part time work.”Be sure to allocate time for each subject according to your requirements, but do not concentrate on one particular subject at the expense of others” As discussed on year assembly, students should look to potentially prioritise their energy towards, homework, assessment tasks, and further study. Further study being strategies for remembering and processing subject content and developing skills to do this. Students were encouraged to seek specific strategies for “study” techniques from each of their subject teachers as each area will have differences in how study techniques will be most effective
REMINDER - ABSENCE/ ILLNESS / MISADVENTURE
If a student is absent on the day of a common task the office must be notified and the student must complete a Misadventure Form on their return.
Do not assume misadventure forms will be approved. Holidays, routine appointments, part-time work, driving tests, sporting commitments without principles approval and technical problems concerning computers, printers or internet access will not be considered to be an acceptable form of misadventure.
It is very important for students and their parents to continue to communicate with teachers if they are struggling with any aspects of the course or if they believe they are eligible for a misadventure.
ATTENDANCE
Just a reminder that attendance is of utmost importance to academic success and well being. Year 11 attendance aim in 2025 ie. High Expectations regarding attendance relates to attending 95% of available school days which also equals 10 days or less per year
‘Inspire not to have more but to be more.'

MARTIN PLACE - VIP INVITATION
Lucy, Lucy’s parents, her grandparents, her sister, and I represented the school as VIPS on behalf of Lucy Bacales, a Year 9 student from St John the Evangelist, who has been named the winner of the Secondary School Division RSL and Schools Remember ANZAC Art Competition.
Lucy’s Artwork was projected on multiple billboard screens around the CBD area.

A heartwarming depiction of the ANZAC Day Legacy created by local student Lucy Bacales has won first place at the prestigious 2025 RSL and Schools Remember the ANZAC Art Competition.
The Year 9 student from St John the Evangelist Catholic High School in Nowra was awarded at a special ceremony in Sydney on April 3.
The award was given to her by the NSW Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC.
“I am so grateful for having the opportunity to be part of the competition,” Ms Bacales said.
The competition was open to schools across the state, allowing young people to show off their artistic talent and understanding of the sacrifices made by ANZACS.
Only six finalists were chosen from secondary schools.
Ms Bacales has first-hand experience with the worries of war, as her father served in the Navy, and her grandfather in the Army.
“I tried to personally connect with my father and grandfather, and my experience with having to say goodbye to my dad when he was deployed for a couple of years,” Ms Bacales said. “I can understand how the children of ANZAC soldiers must have felt during World War I and World War II, though I can’t begin to understand their fear and worry for their family.”
Lucy learnt a lot from the experience, saying she felt it made her a better artist. It was also an excellent opportunity to learn about the ANZACS. She created the touching piece in a little over a week. “I was given only a little time frame between when I was told about the competition,” Ms Bacales said.
“I started looking into ideas straight away and getting inspiration.”
She found that inspiration from other ANZAC art, like Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War, which her grandmother told her about. “Seeing the ANZAC soldiers being humanised in giant realistic sculptures, along with my interest in drawing people, inspired me to include my soldier in my artwork,” Ms Bacales said. She included poppies because they represented the ANZACS, and also to comment on how soldiers could lose their individuality behind the poppy. “The soldiers as individuals become blurry behind this symbol,” Ms Bacales said.
It was important to her to keep the soldier’s face visible in her artwork. “ This is why I had poppies growing off of his face and flowing in the wind around the Ode.”
In recognition of her achievement, Ms Bacales has received a VIP invitation to the Dawn Service at Martin Place in Sydney on April 25.
Her artwork will also be on display at the service.
Ms Bacales said she was “so excited to attend the Dawn Service in Martin Place and be recognised by my school community.”
She will be celebrated at a school assembly on Thursday May 1.
