LIVE A LIFE OF CHOICE, NOT CHANCE
At times, school can be daunting for all involved, staff, parents and especially our students. When we start as bright eyed youngsters in Year 7, it is exciting and new and we are ready to take on the world. In Year 9 and 10, we begin selecting electives and finding where our passions lay and when we get to Year 11 and 12, we are essentially preparing ourselves for life after school, whatever that may be - for some it may be university, full time employment, TAFE, an apprenticeship or a mixture of all four. If you are one of the fortunate ones, you may know exactly what you want to do after you graduate and have your path already set out, however, for the vast majority, this is still yet to reveal itself.
This can be tough for some of our students as they try to navigate the world around them and engage in their studies and do their best without a clear understanding of who they want to be or where they want to go. While research states that those who have completed Year 12 are more likely to continue with further education or training and have a more successful transition into the workforce and life after school, it is at this time that motivation can waver, that focus can shift and students start to ask themselves, is school really worth it. My response is always the same. School is not about extended responses, trigonometry or Shakespeare, school is about doors. It is about opening doors for yourself well after you leave us, you get to choose which path you take and not be forced to take one that circumstance dictates. Whether you are someone that knows exactly what you want to do in life or someone that is still unsure, school is about living a life of choice, not chance and I believe it is our job as educators and parents to help you achieve this.
Over the next few weeks, our Year 8 and 10 students will engage in an important part of their school journey, the subject selection processes. They will start to map out their interests, passions and pathways of study into the future. While we have a great support process here at St Johns, where we speak to all students about the amazing subjects on offer, encourage them and their families to attend information nights and, specifically for our Year 10's, engage in one-to-one interviews where we encourage them to ask questions, and explore the choices they have made, I am often asked by parents, “How can I help my child in their learning or their subject choices. It is different from when I was at school.” As parents, we all want the best for our children or the young ones in our care. We want them to be better than we were, to be the best versions of themselves and ultimately, we want them to be happy in their lives.
The simplest and easiest way to help them through school, whatever phase they are in, is to be genuinely interested. To speak with them about their future, about what they may want to do, about the choices they want to make and why. About the importance of selecting subjects that they are interested in, not ones that allow them to wear their sport uniform more often, subjects they have passion for, not ones they think are easy and subjects that they will be successful in, not ones that their friends are choosing. Support them in making choices that will open doors for them and lead to a life of choice, not chance.
If you need any support in doing this or are unsure of the processes in place please do not hesitate to reach out and contact the school to speak with your son, daughter or person in your care’s PALS teacher. They may be able to help you and provide support or, depending on your questions, direct you to the most appropriate support person.

Just a reminder that HSC Trial Exams will occur during weeks 3 and 4 in Term 3. AFL SECONDARY SCHOOLS CUP FINAL
Jarrah, Adam, Reece, Lachlan, Dylan, Matt and Sam along with Year 11 students all played in the AFL Secondary Schools Cup Final at Ulladulla on Friday June 2. The team played really well and won their first three games making it to the final. After being down by 14 points at the break they managed to push themselves and only went down by one point at the siren. Congratulations to the whole team!
FOUNDATION DAY
Once again Year 12 were a big part of the St John’s Foundation Day celebrations. Students from each house worked together on their stalls creating memories of their last Foundation Day. A highlight of the day for Year 12 was the special musical performance that included the whole year group storming the stage to be a part of the final act.
BISHOP'S VISIT
Last Wednesday Year 12 had the opportunity to meet with Bishop Brian Mascord. The Bishop meets with Year 12 students from across the diocese each year and his visit to St John’s provided the students the opportunity to ask questions about issues in society, the Church’s stance on some controversial topics as well as learn a little more about the life of a Bishop. The questions asked by the students were thought provoking and the Bishop was open and honest in his responses to some tricky questions. The Bishop met with the school leaders in the Chapel
I want to commend Year 12 on how they engaged in the morning.
HOSPITALITY - FINAL COMPETENCY TASK
Last Thursday 8 June the Year 12 Hospitality class completed their final Competency Task which involved catering for an event. The students prepared, cooked and served a 3 course lunch for 20 people. This was a compulsory learning experience, giving students the opportunity to develop and show competence in various areas of the training package in a real life situation. The students served lunch to parents and staff, including our principal Mr Marshall. The students did a marvellous job for this task, the food that was served was absolutely delicious! Congratulations Year 12 Hospitality students.
HOT CHOCOLATE
Each Wednesday morning Year 12 house groups take turns in preparing and sell hot chocolate before school. All monies raised goes to the Vinnies Winter Appeal. Last week Benedict smashed their sales and sold out. This week is Mackillop house followed by Chisholm. Well done Year 12 on getting behind this good cause. U13'S BOYS - NRL SHAUN TIMMIN'S SHIELD CHAMPIONS 2023
The initial match-up saw St John’s take on the Illawarra victors in Edmund Rice. With the expectations of tough opponents first up, the boys prepared well with a focused and structured warm-up. The expectations were not misled, with both teams evenly matched early on. It took the sharp footwork from Halfback Noah Jamieson through the middle to break the game open. The linebreak saw the boys gain ascendancy, providing the team an opportunity to set up their structure and execute a rehearsed play in the following phase. This led to the opening try scored by Fullback Torr Morely. Goal kicker Logan Juric added the two points with a well executed conversion. The linebreak saw the boys gain ascendancy, providing the team an opportunity to set up their structure and execute a rehearsed play in the following phase. This led to the opening try scored by Fullback Torr Morely. Goal kicker Logan Juric added the two points with a well executed conversion. A momentum swing occurred which saw Edmund Rice gain an abundance of repeat sets, eventually breaking down a strong Johnnies defence. This saw the teams locked up at 6 all heading into the break. The second half was as evenly matched as the first, it took the individual brilliance in the shape of a general play kick return by Torr Morely which made the difference, the 70m effort was again converted by Logan Juric taking St John’s to a 12-6 lead. Johnnies were challenged defensively for the remainder of the game but the resilient defensive line was flawless even after the buzzer when Queenslander Fergus Coughlan played at the outstretched arm of an Edmund Rice player attempting to score, causing a knock-on in goal and securing the win for St John’s.
The second game saw St John’s take on Bega High. A physically tough game leading to some frustration amongst the playing group with final passes just not sticking. The introduction of middle forward Lincoln Taylor provided some much needed impact in attack. Lincoln’s line break and quick play of the ball created the opportunity for St John’s crafty number 9 Nate Shalala to cross the line and open the scoring. The game maintained it’s high level of physicality resulting in missed opportunities for both teams however a match winner would come from a rehearsed scrum play which saw Taj Goddard combine with edge Backrower Logan Juric for a length of the field effort. Bega High bounced back with a late surge toward the end of the match gaining a consultation try with game finishing 12-4.
Our last game saw St John’s take on Batemans Bay High, unfortunately for our opponents this was the game where our team clicked. Nate Shalala again opened the scoring with another dummy half surge close to the line. Big runs from forwards Luke Keating and Logan Dibben set up our structure allowing the use of our rehearsed backline movement which saw Tali Douglass find space and linking up with speedster Dean Austin who out paced and out stepped cover defenders to the tryline. The match finished 20-4 which included another double from Torr Morely. We had a great day and are proud to be the first St John’s team to win the Shaun Timmins Shield since 2007. (Logan Juric Yr7)
The boys showed great resilience throughout the day and should be very proud of their efforts. Special mention and congratulations to Torr Morely who was announced as player of the tournament voted by retired teachers of the South Coast Illawarra. The team was also provided with an NRL pack which is to be presented to our Most Valuable Player, it is my privilege to announce Nate Shalala as our MVP for the day. The team is now ranked amongst the top 8 non-selective sport schools in the state and will progress to the Southern NSW Championships in Cootamundra on July 27th.
NATE SHALALA - MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
TORR MORLEY - PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT
We wish the team the best of luck at the upcoming Southern NSW Championships!
Mr Zac Ellul
On Friday 1 June the intermediate boys basketball team attended the Wollongong diocese trials for NSWCCC representation. After a few training sessions the boys were primed and ready to go. We had prepared for John Terry as the team we needed to beat and went into the game with a plan, despite losing centre William Webster to COVID. The boys got off to a slow start with Brady Sinclair channelling Steph Curry and keeping us in the game with some slick outside shooting even if he did get a little bit trigger happy.
The defensive structures were working but we were still clunky in offence. Eventually Mitchell Exton, and Jalen Rees managed to get the offence rolling, driving to the basket and picking up fouls and the margin was closed to single figures. All the boys played well and worked hard to try and bring home the win but fouls ended up costing us greatly going down 40-48. Many thanks to Blayne Rumble who joined the team last minute and to Oliver Driscoll for his leadership in creating solutions to the problems we faced in the gala day last year.
Mr Tim Chard
AFL SECONDARY SCHOOLS CUP FINAL
On 19th May after securing a spot straight to the second round, in the AFL Secondary School’s Cup, we travelled just down the road to the showground in which we would have our first game against Ulladulla high school. We played well with the chemistry of the y10 boys coming together to form a strong side. We came out with a win on the day, winning 7-12-54 to 1-0-6 with Beau McKenzie kicking 4 goals and Dusty Cook two. (Dylan)
On Friday, June 2 at Ulladulla Sport Complex our first game was against Lumen Christi. Our team continued our winning streak with Lumen Christi proving to be no match for our squad as we secured a convincing victory with a margin of 4 goals. The game was an excellent showcase of teamwork and skill from our side. Mitch Exton played a pivotal role in our triumph, demonstrating his exceptional talent by kicking 3 goals throughout the match. His contributions to the game were instrumental in securing our victory. (Lachy)
Following the hour break between game one and game two we played the confident and skilled Edmund Rice. The game was intense and highly competitive, but we never wavered in our determination. We played with passion, skill, and a strategic mindset, which allowed us to outplay our opponents. It was an incredible experience to see our hard work and preparation pay off in the form of a convincing win by 4 goals. Adam Stautin kicking two goals helping the boys to secure a well deserved victory. (Dylan)
In game 3 with versed Eden Marine with a guaranteed spot in the grand final, we gave the boys a fair share of the footy changing up the way we set up. This challenged a few of the boys to play a role they were unfamiliar with and they rose to the challenge. With a scrappy start, Leishos pep talk gave the boys inspiration to go into the final game of the day on a win. (Lachy)
Finally we had the Grand final versing Edmund Rice. Earlier in the day, Edmund Rice had snuck into the Grand Final winning their final pool match by 1 point. Despite easily accounting for them earlier in our previous match up, Coach Leishman urged the boys to for one last effort to secure a spot in the State Final. Despite having all the play in the first half we were not able to capitalise on the scoreboard, trailing at half time. At half time, Leisho with support from Mr Gray, swung the magnets around moving Jarrah Treweek forward, Sebastian Ball into the ruck, Oliver Driscoll onto the ball. This resulted in repeat forward entries but St John’s still couldn’t convert in front of goal. Leisho injected fresh legs onto the field with Brady Sinclair proving pivotal down back, Riley Clerget proving run on the wing and Beau Bramley a physical presence down forward. St John’s started to take the ascendancy on the field. As the time started to run out, A goal to Mitchell Exton narrowed the score to two points. With 30 seconds left to play, the next centre bounce was pivotal. Seb tapped it to Oscar Tunney- Roberts who handballed to Lachy who found Oli running toward goal. He kicked forward and Beau McKenzie took a huge pack mark as the siren went. Beau went back and gave it everything he had but unfortunately was just wide of the post registering a point and giving Edmund Rice a one point victory 2-2-14 1-7-13. (Dylan)
The Best players for the day were: Jarrah Treweek, Lachlan Almond, Oscar Tunney-Roberts, Mitchell Exton, Reece Mannasah and Adam Staunton. We would like to thank Mr Leishman and Mr Gray for coming and helping out on the day. Sam Phillips for the DJ bus set. (Lachy)
