37th ANNIVERSARY OF SAINT JOHN PAUL II ABORIGINAL ADDRESS
November 27 has been set aside as a National Day of Celebration in recognition of Pope JPII’s address to Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people on 29 November, 1986 in Alice Springs. As he spoke the wind arrived and whipped some of the red earth through the crowd and it seemed like the Holy Spirit was present.
“You are part of Australia and Australia is part of you. And the Church herself in Australia will not be fully the Church that Jesus wants her to be until you have made your contribution to her life and until that contribution has been joyfully received by others”.
This day was significant for the Catholic ministries working in AITSL communities amongst the 120,000 Catholic Indigenous peoples. We recognise our co0nnection at St John’s with Catholic Mission and the immersion groups that they organise for us to Darwin and the Northern Territory and their continuing work with indigenous communities.
END OF THE LITURGICAL YEAR
On Sunday 26 November we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. This also signifies the end of the Liturgical year and the commencement of the next liturgical year. This also commences the Holy Season of Advent the following Sunday, 3 December. This is a time of waiting and hope in preparation for the coming of the saviour, the birth of Jesus. To mark this occasion many Parishes and schools will prepare an Advent wreath.
This is made up of a circle of evergreen leaves and branches with four candles. The candles are white or purple and some customs have a pink candle for the third Sunday. A fifth candle, the Christ candle is placed in the centre.
On the first Sunday of Advent one candle is lit, on the second two and so on. The Christ candle is lit on Christmas Eve. The circle symbolises God’s everlasting love for us. Evergreen plants are also a symbol of endless life. Lighting an increasing number of candles represent the ever-increasing light of Christ as we move towards Christmas, where Jesus comes into the world for us.
I would ask all families to engage in the Advent activities in your local Church and encourage the students to explore the significance of this time of year.

YEAR 12 GRADUATION DINNER
On Wednesday 8 November we celebrated the final Year 12 event with the Graduation Dinner. After the difficulties of covid and the associated restrictions, we took the event offsite to Figbird Cottage in Terara.
It was a magic night – despite some rain. After the rain the sun shone brightly and the dance floor was filled. A fitting event for Mrs Kelly as she has invested six years with these students on their journey into adulthood. We wish all students well as they commence the journey beyond school.

UAC Career mapping: where to after school?

Transition and Pathways Specialist
As the year winds down for the majority of students for Year 11 it is really speeding up. Students have embraced the first term of Year 12 with such maturity and enthusiasm and I congratulate them on this. As they move to the end of term students have a lot of assessment tasks coming in. I remind students of the assessment policy and the misadventure process. Please if there are any issues ask students to speak to myself or the curriculum office. Also a reminder to students to use the holidays coming up wisley. Remember to have some fun but also use this as a time to ensure that they are up to date with their work and their study notes.
The highlight of this term and I am sure their last year of high school was senior retreat that took place in Week 2 of this term. Students were a credit to their families and the way that they engaged in the activities and the opportunities presented to them at retreat was amazing. The time together clearly bonded them as a year group and set the foundations for the final year ahead. I encourage students to continue to use what they learnt at retreat and also encourage them to continue to seek the opportunities of togetherness as a year group.
Again thank you to students for this wonderful experience. I cant wait to see what the next year holds for us

Our Year 8 students have started their new unit called Deadly In STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics). The program takes a community-driven approach to deliver and support activities, drawing connections between Indigenous STEM knowledge and local STEM industries.
Deadly in Generation STEM helps students strengthen connections to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander STEM knowledge, and develops problem-solving and leadership skills. Classes have started to look at the importance of Eucalyptus in bush medicine by extracting oils from Eucalyptus leaves, how bushfire management allow for the regeneration of our native plants, the physics behind the didjeridu and making sounds in nature for the telling of stories and communication, understanding the best woods for starting a fire and implementing engineering views on weapons creation for both cooking and hunting.
Our Stage 5 students have been working hard and focusing on consolidating stage learning outcomes in their end of year examinations in knowledge and skills, with the goal of completing units for 2023 to ensure students can have the best start to their learning in 2024.
In Stage 6, all sciences are well and truly underway, with many of our senior students preparing to undertake their first school based HSC assessment task. Working collaboratively and demonstrating that their hard work and consistent engagement pays off.
We would like to announce Charlie Coulson-Knight has been chosen to join the 2023-24 cohort of the ABE Master Teacher Fellowship. As one of several teachers selected from a variety of international sites, this program will support Charlie Coulson-Knight in collaborating with experts from STEM fields, develop curriculum infusing research-based pedagogy, inclusive classroom practices, and cutting-edge biotech concepts and technologies.
Awardees were chosen based on their contributions to student learning, leadership skills, communication skills, and support of ABE and the ABE community.
As an ABE Master Teacher, Charlie Coulson-Knight will work with other Fellows from around the world to develop classroom, curriculum, or professional development resources in areas of personal interest. Fellows will also serve as ambassadors to other teachers, providing peer advice and guidance on using the LabXchange platform to support ABE while encouraging other ABE teachers to grow in new, innovative directions.
Charlie Coulson-Knight will begin the Fellowship this December 2023.

On Wednesday 8th of November, St Johns had 2 boys teams travel to Sydney Olympic Park to compete at the NSW SCHOOL'S CUP STATE NETBALL FINAL after progressing through earlier rounds.
Our Year 8 team fought hard and had a brilliant time competing at this level against very strong competition but unfortunately did not progress on the day.
Our Year 9/10 team advanced all the way through to the grand final at the tournament, coming away with a silver medal placing 2nd in the state.
Super proud of all the boys!

BERG SHIELD - YEAR 7 - 9 BOY'S CRICKET
On Friday 27 October on a wet and overcast day, the St John’s (Year 7 to 9 boy's) Berg Shield cricket team travelled to Albion Park to take on St Joseph’s in the first round of the state wide Catholic T20 knockout competition.
There was a great start to the day with opening pace bowlers Beau Lynch and Hugh Duff bowling tightly and finishing with 0/3 and 1/9 respectively after their 3 overs each. The standout bowlers through the middle overs who really changed the course of the game were Matthew Reid with 2/13 and Shaia Wagner-Smith with the amazing figures of 4/3 bowling his right arm off spin and just missing out on a hat trick. Jake Swan and Arlo Brown also picked up a wicket each to help dismiss St Joseph’s for a total of 63.
When it was St John’s turn to bat, the team was quietly confident that we would be able to chase down the required 64 runs quite easily. Xavier Smith(22) and Hamish Kinch(12) started confidently until we lost our first wicket at 33. Some very strong, straight bowling from the St Joseph’s attack then saw our batters completely collapse and be all out for 55, falling 8 runs short of St Joseph’s total. The only other batter who added some resistance was Clayton Whitby who managed a hard fought 9 runs.
Even though we have bowed out of this year’s competition, it has made our squad thirsty to compete next year with new found experience and desire.
Thanks to Mr Muller for driving the freshly painted school bus and scoring on the day.
Thank you also to Mr Fuller for managing the team and umpiring on the day.
