37th ANNIVERSARY OF SAINT JOHN PAUL II ABORIGINAL ADDRESS

November 27 has been set aside as a National Day of Celebration in recognition of Pope JPII’s address to Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people on 29 November, 1986 in Alice Springs. As he spoke the wind arrived and whipped some of the red earth through the crowd and it seemed like the Holy Spirit was present.

“You are part of Australia and Australia is part of you. And the Church herself in Australia will not be fully the Church that Jesus wants her to be until you have made your contribution to her life and until that contribution has been joyfully received by others”.

This day was significant for the Catholic ministries working in AITSL communities amongst the 120,000 Catholic Indigenous peoples. We recognise our co0nnection at St John’s with Catholic Mission and the immersion groups that they organise for us to Darwin and the Northern Territory and their continuing work with indigenous communities.

END OF THE LITURGICAL YEAR

On Sunday 26 November we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. This also signifies the end of the Liturgical year and the commencement of the next liturgical year. This also commences the Holy Season of Advent the following Sunday, 3 December. This is a time of waiting and hope in preparation for the coming of the saviour, the birth of Jesus. To mark this occasion many Parishes and schools will prepare an Advent wreath.

This is made up of a circle of evergreen leaves and branches with four candles. The candles are white or purple and some customs have a pink candle for the third Sunday. A fifth candle, the Christ candle is placed in the centre.

On the first Sunday of Advent one candle is lit, on the second two and so on. The Christ candle is lit on Christmas Eve. The circle symbolises God’s everlasting love for us. Evergreen plants are also a symbol of endless life. Lighting an increasing number of candles represent the ever-increasing light of Christ as we move towards Christmas, where Jesus comes into the world for us.

I would ask all families to engage in the Advent activities in your local Church and encourage the students to explore the significance of this time of year.

YEAR 12 GRADUATION DINNER

On Wednesday 8 November we celebrated the final Year 12 event with the Graduation Dinner. After the difficulties of covid and the associated restrictions, we took the event offsite to Figbird Cottage in Terara.

It was a magic night – despite some rain. After the rain the sun shone brightly and the dance floor was filled. A fitting event for Mrs Kelly as she has invested six years with these students on their journey into adulthood. We wish all students well as they commence the journey beyond school.

Mass on Wednesday 15 November was celebrated by Fr Joseph and attended by 9RE.I and 9RE.J in the St John's Chapel.

As you are aware, all Year 10 students have the opportunity to delve deeper into a field of their interest, gaining a firsthand understanding of the roles within it. Such immersion can prove immensely beneficial as it allows individuals to discern whether their chosen industry aligns with their aspirations.

To facilitate this process, please refer to the Careers Google Classroom for guidance on how to approach potential employers. For your convenience, I have included all necessary documentation as attachments, streamlining the entire process.

To participate in this program, It is compulsory for all students to:

• Complete and upload the Work Readiness Certificate to the Careers Classroom
• Complete the White Card Training if they intend to work on a construction site
• Complete and submit the Working with Animals Guideline form

Announcing the New $10,000 UNSW Advantage Award

For 2024, we’re introducing the $10,000 UNSW Advantage Award to support all students from low-socioeconomic areas as they transition to UNSW.

If you live in an eligible low-socioeconomic area, receive an offer from UNSW and enrol for Term 1 2024, you will be eligible to receive the $10,000 UNSW Advantage Award to support you in your first year of studies. Low-socioeconomic areas are based on IRSAD and IEO indexes of SEIFA criteria.

A Trade Support Loan is an interest free loan to help you purchase trade tools and supplies while being an apprentice. You can borrow up to $24,492 (2023-2024), which is paid in monthly instalments. My highlight of the day was when we arrived at our first station and we were approaching the lions.  They charged at us and we all were scared.

The highlight of my zoo trip was seeing the monkeys climb and jump around their enclosure. I liked seeing them use the tools like rocks, to try and bust open the nut to eat it. I also liked the farm animals like the sheep and goats.

Our Stage 5 students have been working hard and focusing on consolidating stage learning outcomes in their end of year examinations in knowledge and skills, with the goal of completing units for 2023 to ensure students can have the best start to their learning in 2024.

In Stage 6, all sciences are well and truly underway, with many of our senior students preparing to undertake their first school based HSC assessment task. Working collaboratively and demonstrating that their hard work and consistent engagement pays off.

We would like to announce Charlie Coulson-Knight has been chosen to join the 2023-24 cohort of the ABE Master Teacher Fellowship. As one of several teachers selected from a variety of international sites, this program will support Charlie Coulson-Knight in collaborating with experts from STEM fields, develop curriculum infusing research-based pedagogy, inclusive classroom practices, and cutting-edge biotech concepts and technologies.

Awardees were chosen based on their contributions to student learning, leadership skills, communication skills, and support of ABE and the ABE community.

As an ABE Master Teacher, Charlie Coulson-Knight will work with other Fellows from around the world to develop classroom, curriculum, or professional development resources in areas of personal interest. Fellows will also serve as ambassadors to other teachers, providing peer advice and guidance on using the LabXchange platform to support ABE while encouraging other ABE teachers to grow in new, innovative directions. 

Charlie Coulson-Knight will begin the Fellowship this December 2023.

Opportunity for families to apply for free NBN services

To boost education opportunities and narrow the digital divide, the Australian Government, Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts, is working with NBN Co to provide up to 30,000 families with no internet at home free NBN for 12 months. 

The process for families to apply for the initiative is as follows:

• Contact the National Referral Centre on 1800 954 610 (10 am - 6 pm AEDT Monday to Friday)
• The National Referral will determine the family's eligibility
• Once eligibility has been determined they will issue the family with a voucher for 12 months of free NBN Internet to be used with a carrier of choice

To be eligible, a family must:

• Have a child living at home enrolled in an Australian school
• Have no active broadband service over the NBN network
• Live in a premise where they can access a standard NBN service
• Not have had an active NBN service during the previous 14 days.
