OPEN NIGHT 2024
What a wonderful event that showcased our school so well and allowed our student volunteers to shine. I thank the Staff for their time away from their families and the enthusiasm and passion they have for their teaching and the school.
A particular highlight was the students who led tour groups or volunteered to assist in the displays. Over 140 students attended and proudly promoted their school. A sincere thank you.
We all know that St John’s is a very good school, but the aim is to make it a great one. With commitment like that shown on our open night we are on the right path.

Friday the 15th March 2024 is ‘World Sleep Day’. Whilst it would be wonderful if an official “sleep day” meant we could all take the day off to stay in the comfort of our beds, but rather, it is a day used to highlight the importance of sleep for our wellbeing and celebrate healthy sleep.
Teens need an average of 8-10 hours sleep per night due to the profound mental, physical, social and emotional development occurring at this age”
Research shows that teenagers need 8-10 hours of sleep per night due to the profound mental, physical, social and emotional development occurring in this stage of their lives. Additionally, an appropriate amount of sleep is extremely important for the promotion of attention, memory and analytical thought. As such, teenagers that have a good sleep routine are more likely to have better academic performance. On the other hand, a lack of sleep can impact a teen’s mood causing emotional instability, irritability, a higher occurrence of mental health concerns and greater risk-taking behaviour. Unfortunately, biological factors work against teenagers developing positive sleep routines that allow them to gain their full 8-10 hours of sleep required. The teenage sleep drive is slower than adults and therefore teenagers naturally begin to feel tired later at night.
Teenagers can improve their sleep by making improvements to their sleep environment and sleep habits. Some helpful tips include:
- Keeping the same weekday and weekend sleep routine
- Developing a routine before bedtime that promotes relaxation (e.g. a warm glass of milk, a warm bath or shower, reading a book or meditation)
- Avoid caffeine and energy drinks in the afternoon and evening
- Avoiding devices half an hour before bedtime
- Having a cool, dark and quiet bedroom at bedtime
It is always helpful for parents/carers to assist their teens in improving their sleep environment and encouraging them to implement positive sleep habits. However, if a teenager is still experiencing problems with their sleep, it may be time to seek advice from their doctor or pediatrician.

RECENT EVENTS
Shoalhaven Food Network
On Tuesday 27th February, students in year 10 were part of a fantastic day out, meeting, listening and learning first hand from industry leaders.
One of the tour’s highlights included an insight into Flour Water Salt. Students were privy to the production area, learning first hand what it takes to be an artisan baker. In addition, they were able to view the latest technology used in baking with multi level ovens. Pie and croissant tastings did not go to waste - every sample was enjoyed!
The Bearded Brewer presented students with a range of challenges to test their palate and gain a better understanding of the coffee production process, the importance of sourcing beans ethically and the techniques required in producing a high quality coffee.
To finish the day, the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre facilitated front of house activities, including setting tables, lunch service and the art of making mocktails. A tour of the theatre and the intricacies of the team behind the scenes of every event captured students as they ventured from dressing rooms to the overhead lighting rig. The guest panel provided further insight into the hospitality industry and students were captivated by the possibilities. Very exciting!
Overall a fantastic day!

BIOLOGY EXCURSION - MT KEIRA
It was a frosty summer morning on the 26th of February, a bus full of beaming young men and women couldn't contain their excitement for the events that were about to unfold. Brains ready to intake wisdom like never conceived before, the jubilant chatter of the young biologists only slightly represented the excitement I felt within my tummy. I'd personally taken extensive research on the curiously unique mountain known to the locals as 'Mt Keira'. Before beginning my scientific endeavours I made sure I filled my grumbling stomach full of Mr Rees' signature chicken wrap (and a side of crisps). We then broke off into two seperate groups where each partook in several exhilarating scientific tests, each furthering my already sensational personal Biological Skills. All and all my peers and I had a jolly good time, and would highly recommend the subject for any highly skilled scientists such as myself.

MUSIC EXCURSION - 'ENCORE'
'God's gift to you is your life. What you become is your gift to God.'
What an amazing start it has been to the second term of Year 12 and the first term of 2024. Year 12 have blown me away with their amazing attitude, the way they are wearing their uniform and their overall involvement in the school. We have already had a number of events that they have involved themselves in including the swimming carnival, UOW Discovery Day, Open night and International Women's Day.
I would also like to congratulate the following students who gave up their time for the Working Bee last Wednesday: Jessica de Wit, Jaimi Chapman, Olivia Oke, Alexandra Leerson, Tom Brooks, Yianna Christensen, Talika Irvine, Andrew Percy, Savannah Damave, Kate Broome, Joey Bailey, Nakita Boatswain, Hugh Vaughan, Abbie Ewens.
I recently asked Year 12 to also reflect on their Year so far something I will be asking Year 12 to do throughout the rest of the Year.
What was the most exciting thing about the Swimming Carnival?
The most exciting thing about the Swimming Carnival was the intense competition and the exhilarating atmosphere as swimmers from different houses or teams battled it out in the pool. The energy was contagious, with spectators cheering on their friends and teammates, creating a sense of camaraderie and school spirit.
Craig Sutton
What was the most interesting thing about the UOW Discovery Day ?
Engaging with other students from other schools and learning about future opportunities.
Joshua Stephanidis
For me I'd say the most interesting thing was being able to open my eyes to opportunities' and experiences for after school.
Thomas Gould
Looking around campus and seeing all the opportunities that are open to us.
Matilda Walker
What has been your favourite thing about this term?
Spending time with friends while progressing in my school journey.

SPOTLIGHT ON STAGE 5!
YEAR 9
This year in year 9 sports there has been a lot of excitement so far, we have participated in many different fun activities such as playing Tennis at the Bomaderry Tennis courts, playing house sports in the gym, and going to Culburra beach to do beach activities. We have had great teachers making all the games fun and a little bit competitive.
Elizabeth Davis
In PASS we were learning about Aussie sports, like oztag and AFL, and how they were played. For the theory side of things, we are completing an assessment task in which we are to write about a sport of our choice, and modify it into a new variant. I like the creativity of this task.
Marshall Avery
In PASS we have been playing Aussie sports each lesson and learning about the history of each of them. So far we have played AFL and Oztag which have been fun. In theory we have an assessment task about a sport of our choice where we write a newspaper report about the sport.
Cody Chater
Currently in child studies we are working on creating a nursery inside a shoebox. This task has been very fun as we are making all of the objects that go inside the box. It has to be up to the basic standards for a baby's safety. I love child studies because we are given opportunities to learn about childbirth, child care and growth. The class is super chill but fun and Mrs Clark is an amazing teacher. I can definitely say that this class is by far my favourite!
Francesca O'Neill
In child studies we study and learn about multiple subjects associated with childbirth, growth, development and how to properly care for a child. As of now, we are creating nurseries to best fit a newborn. We have to follow guidelines for a newborns needs, a budget and research different organisations that have the ability to help a low income earner parent. Child studies is an amazing subject and I look forward to the days I have it.
Claire Lloyd
YEAR 10
The St Johns Bushcraft elective teaches students more about personal qualities such as collaboration skills, personal challenges and teamwork as well as being in the natural environments. This term we have been getting our hands dirty. Using clay resources, we have been creating handmade bricks to build an outdoor oven.
Edie Fernyhough
In year 10 PASS this year, we have focussed on working on our fitness and learnt about water safety, in order to work our way up to completing our Bronze Medallion. I have enjoyed learning about water safety and discovering the ways to be safe in different water sources. Although working on fitness has been somewhat challenging and exhausting, I found it fun pushing myself to the limit and noticing a difference in my fitness levels.
Lani Richardson
As seniors, students select their sports this year. In year 10 sport this term I have chosen water polo. We have been learning skills to play a real game like treading water, passing the ball and holding the ball out of the water. These skills help us to learn how to play the game but also teaches us how to play safely in the water. Learning these skills with my friends has been fun because it helps us connect with each other and learn new things together. I think water polo is a great sport to play in the summer because it keeps you cool and you get great exercise at the same time.
Indiana Hayburn
In Term 1, Year 10 have consistently worked on their striking skills in PDHPE. This unit is a good way to increase our strength and knowledge in sports regarding striking skills. These sports can include cricket or tea ball. This unit has also enabled students to develop good ball-handling skills, teamwork, and hand-eye coordination. The teamwork mainly has helped classes to connect with their new peers in the classroom.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL 2024
Our Whole School Swimming Carnival was held at Nowra Pool on Friday, February 23! It was an awesome day.
First things first, let's talk about the weather. It was a very warm day and great to see so many students get in the water and have a go swimming in their age groups. We were also lucky enough to make it back to school safely before the big storm came in the afternoon! Each and every one of you! The talent and sportsmanship on display during the various swimming events were nothing short of phenomenal.
A very special mention to Year 12 student Talika Irvine, who at her last school swimming carnival managed to break 4 school records which were her own from 2023! These records have been broken in the 100m Freestyle where Talika swam a time of 1:00:84, the 50m Freestyle with a time of 28.09, the 50m Backstroke with a time of 32.85 and the 50m Butterfly with a time of 30.94.
The energy and enthusiasm displayed by each house were truly commendable, and now, let's reveal the points earned by each house.
- In 6th place, with a total of 229 points, let's give a round of applause to House Chisholm! Great effort, Chisholm!
- Coming in at 5th place, we have House MacKillop with a total of 249 points! Well done, MacKillop!
- Securing the 4th spot, we have House Polding with a total of 256 points! Fantastic job, Polding!
- In 3rd place, we have House Purcell with a total of 331 points! Excellent work, Purcell!
- Claiming the 2nd spot, we have House McCabe with a total of 339 points! A big round of applause for McCabe!
- In 1st place, with an impressive total of 351 points, House Benedict! Let's give it up for Benedict, our 2024 Swimming Carnival House Champions!
Congratulations to all the houses for their spirited participation and sportsmanship. Your dedication and teamwork have truly made this year's Swimming Carnival a memorable event. House Benedict, enjoy the glory of victory, and to all the houses, well done on a fantastic effort!
Our incredible staff deserve a massive shout-out. They were the behind-the-scenes heroes, making sure everything ran like a well-oiled machine. From coordinating events to keeping us all safe, they were on it.
Our student helpers were also incredible on the day, they were the ones making sure everything ran smoothly, helping out left and right. Your enthusiasm and positive vibes were infectious, and we couldn't have done it without you.
Gratitude also goes to our parents and carers who came to support us and finally, a big thank you to all the students who competed and cheered on the day.

FERGUS COUGHLAN - SOUTHERN NSW AFL TEAM
Congratulations to Fergus Coughlan of Year 8 for being chosen to play in the Southern NSW AFL team. Fergus will travel to Wagga Wagga for the NSWCCC AFL trials for the two day event on Monday 6 - Tuesday 7 May 2024. Good luck for the trials.
DIOCESAN SWIMMING CARNIVAL
What a pleasure it was for Mr Stephenson and myself to take the St Johns swim team to Corrimal Pool on Wednesday 6th March. The day started with a sleepy but excited bunch of students keen to get in the water and represent their school. It was a perfect day for swimming and the water looked inviting.
We had some outstanding performances at the carnival:
Talika Irvine – Age Champion
1st 100m Breaststroke / 50m Breaststroke / 200m Individual Medley
2nd 50m Butterfly / 100m Backstroke / 50m Backstroke / 100m Freestyle
3rd 50m Freestyle
Oskar Driscoll - Junior Multi Class Champion
Jenson Coughlan - Runner up Age Champion
1st 50m Freestyle / 100m Freestyle
2nd 50m Butterfly
Jenson’s win in the 100m freestyle showed great courage. He had to put in some big strokes and some power kicking in the last 10m, nearing the point of exhaustion, to narrowly win the race.
Talika was challenged in every race by swimmers from the other schools but showed great determination and came out on top at the end of the day.
Oskar was also swimming in a competitive field of mixed ability swimmers and
finished on top in the Junior Multi Class event and will compete in the following races at NSWCCC: 50m Freestyle / 100m Freestyle / 50m Breaststroke / 50m Butterfly.
Trae will also compete at the NSWCCC in 50m Freestyle / 100m Freestyle / 50m Backstroke / 50m Butterfly.
While these performances were amazing, the highlight of the day was the encouragement and teamwork of the whole team. Lots of students jumped in the water to fill spaces and create relays. A lot of fun and laughter was had by all! Toby Kinch was our super sub as were Lily Sproule and Eadan Hall. Hugh Vaughan and Nakita Boatswain were our organisers. Archie Ward, Hayden Fuller, Denzel Atkinson and Kai Reid were the team motivators, and our Year 7 girls led the cheer squad.
It was a fantastic day, and it was a tired but happy group of students that got back on the bus and headed for home knowing that they had given every race their best effort!
Talika Irvine, Jenson Coughlan, Oskar Driskol and Trae Spencer will now progress to represent the Wollongong Diocese at the NSWCCC Championships in April at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. We wish them all the best!
DIOCESAN GIRLS TOUCH FOOTBALL
The Juniors girls showed a lot of willingness to learn and improve in their skills. This was highlighted in their ability to dig deep in the opening couple of matches, they then went on to win 4 games in a row to put themselves equal 2nd. As the day came to an end, the girls needed a win to solidify 2nd spot in the last match, unfortunately they fell just short with the match ending in a draw. It was fantastic to see the girls all helping each other and improving. The girls only missed out on a top 3 by for and against.
The Intermediate girls team were a competitive group of ladies who gained a lot of confidence and began to work well as a team by the end of the day. They began to enjoy the game, they relaxed and started to trust one another on the field and this is where the team found success. They came away with 2 wins, 4 losses, and 3 draws. Players player for the day and well deserved was Ruby Roberts who demonstrated consistent effort in both attack and defence, she never gave up! Congratulations to Allira Hepburn for her selection as a shadow for the Under 15's Diocesan team, a tenacious defender.
The Opens girls touch team were a strong force through the whole day, coming away with more wins than losses. The girls played in good spirit, encouraging each other even when mistakes were made. They played well as a team and most importantly enjoyed themselves. Congratulations to Hannah Phillips who was selected as a shadow and Bella Lord who was selected as part of the Wollongong Diocesan team.
Thank you to Max Marshall and Tahj Webb for refereeing on the day.
DIOCESAN BOYS TOUCH FOOTBALL
The U13 boys were fantastic on the day, demonstrating a competitiveness and a desire to live up to the standards set for them by last year’s, St John’s U13 champions. The boys started the day slow, losing the first game before responding with a 6 game winning streak, before going down to the eventual champions, Holy Spirit, 2-1 in a tight affair. The boys were fantastic in both attack and defence, having the best for and against across all teams. Thank you to Bella Lord who refereed on the day.
Our SJE U15 Boys team started the day off slowly with tight wins against Magdalene and last year's champions Mt Carmel. The following match against St Joseph’s saw combinations click and St John’s take out the game 8-0. A mixture of tight games and blown out score lines in our favour was the pattern of the day. A playoff for first and second came down to the last game of the day against Edmund Rice. We unfortunately went down 2-1 which was a massive result considering Edmund Rice had not conceded a point all day. A huge thank you to Tahj Webb who refereed our games in between playing his own with no rest breaks, we really appreciate it. A special mention to Harry Carr who played outstanding on the day and was our top try scorer and congratulations to Noah Jamieson and Torr Morley who were selected as part of the U15’s Diocesan Team.
The Opens team played some outstanding touch on the day. Finishing with a commendable 4 wins and 4 losses. They kicked off with an outstanding 5-0 victory over St Josephs and finished the day with victories over Mt Carmel and John Terry. Impressively, they matched eventual champions, Edmund Rice until the final 10 seconds of the match, going down 2-1.
Congratulations to Tahj Webb of Year 10 who was selected as a shadow for the Opens Diocesan Team.

2023 Dawn Service St Michaels and St Johns
LEN SEYFFER 1924-2023
Len John Seyffer was involved in many assets of the St Johns and St Michaels community; this year, he would have been 100 years old. He will be sadly missed, as it will be his first anniversary since his death on April 24th, 2023.
Len was one of nature's gentlemen. He was highly regarded by all he met. His work within the local community was outstanding. The finest example of a man who ‘looked after his mates’.
St Michaels Primary School has entered a National ANZAC Day Competition, and Ray Pearson and Darryl Keely, who have known Len for a long time, came to talk to the Year 6 students at St Michaels last week. Ray spoke about the Lone Pine tree he and Len planted here at St John's in 2012 with Principal Neil Mc Cann. So he decided to visit St John's to visit the tree as it had been a while since he had seen it.
Thank you to the Year 10 Music class and Mr Christie
ANZAC music rehearsals are well on the way.
Thank you to Maddie, Toby, Marnie, Keoni, and Eamonn. It sounds great.
The Shoalhaven Defence Families Association was lucky enough to get a new home recolated next to the Fleet Arm Museum. I was fortunate enough to attend the opening last Thursday.
Shoalhaven Defence Family Association has supported local families for over 50 years and is a vital network that connects and supports local families.

MATHS 'Pi DAY'
Pi Day was celebrated on March 14th. There was a special presentation at the school assembly where a competition was announced. There were 4 competitors and many supporters in the foyer of B-block to witness the exciting event.
Competitors were required to write pi on a white board to as many decimal places as possible. The rules of the competition were for the longest, error free, string of digits from the start of the number.
The competitors were Amelie Wells, Rachael Martinez, Silas Cox, and Riley McIntyre. Rachael wrote about 300 digits but made 3 errors the first being the 43rd digit. Unfortunately for Rachel, both Silas and Riley wrote a longer correct initial string of 65 and 53 respectfully. These 3 all agreed to share the prize. Congratulations to all involved and thanks to the supporters who came to support their friends.

SCHOOL BUS TRAVEL
Dear Parents
Students travelling on a School Bus to and from school are required to have a valid school bus pass for the school service they are catching. If a valid school pass cannot be shown a fare CAN be charged. In the event the school bus pass is lost, some form of student ID is to be shown whilst obtaining a replacement pass (fee applies). You can help make your child’s school bus journey more pleasant by ensuring your child has a valid school bus pass and presents it to the driver in the morning AND afternoon. Parents are reminded that the School Free Travel is only valid between home and school as per the conditions on the back of the pass. Fares will be charged for all other journeys including travel to sport. Skateboards/Scooters/Bicycles are not permitted on the bus.
Kind Regards
Travis Jones

SCHOOL PROCEDURES
Dear Parents / Carers
Below you will find some every day procedures that will be helpful as parents and carers to learn the daily routine of the school. With a student population this year of over 950, you can understand that routine is very important to the smooth running of the school.
The following are a list of procedures, which if followed correctly, will enable us to serve you in a friendly, efficient, professional manner at all times as well as allow students to focus on their learning.
Early Leavers:
If you need to collect your child early from school, please send a note in with them in the morning, which they will bring to the office before school. Students' diary will be stamped with an Early Leavers Pass providing them permission to leave class. They will meet you at the office and there is no waiting for anyone. It is very difficult to get a child out of class on short notice. It is a disruption for the teachers and the rest of the class. If a student is at sport, or doing a practical class then they can be difficult to locate. If you find you need to pick your child up urgently please ring the school before you come in to give us time to locate them.
It would be appreciated if any change to after school travel arrangements to be communicated to your child is received by the office no later than 2.30pm.
School times:
Please ensure your child arrives at school on time. School begins at 8.30am each morning. If they are late they must report to the office to be signed in or they will be marked absent on the roll.
Lost Property:
A real concern is the amount of lost property that comes into the office. There are a number of uniform items each year that end up being sent to St Vincent de Paul as they have no names on them and students do not come to claim them. We cannot return items if they are not clearly labelled. Please put your child's name on all of their uniform items, especially blazers and sports track suits. Hats are another item that often comes to the office with no name. Do not think because they are now in high school they will not lose things!
Illness:
If your child becomes ill during the day you will be phoned to come and collect them. Students who are not well enough to be in class must go home. Please ensure we always have your updated telephone numbers. Students are not to use their mobile phones to ring you if they are sick. Medication (including Paracetamol) will only be administered if supplied to the office with a Medical Consent form.
Afternoon pick up:
If you are picking your child up from school in the afternoon, please do not park in the staff car park at the front of the school. The only exception is if you are collecting a student from the learning support class.
Valuables at school:
Students are encouraged not to bring valuables or money to school. The school is not responsible for loss or theft of valuables whilst students are at school. All students are advised to keep valuables with them at all times, either in their pockets or in a pencil case in the classroom. Due to WHS regulations all bags have to be left outside of classrooms.
Electronic Devices:
Mobile phones, iPods, iPhones, MP3s and other electronic devices are permitted to be used before and after school however they are not to be used during school hours and must be switched off. If a student is found to be using these items they will be confiscated. The first confiscation is classed as their one and only warning, they will have the item returned to them at the end of the day. The second confiscation will result in the phone/electronic device being stored in the school office and the student will be required to attend a playground withdrawal before collecting their device the next day. Third and consequent confiscations will be treated as an act of defiance and dealt with accordingly. Parents are asked not to phone their children on their mobiles or to send them text messages during the day. If you need to get an urgent message to your child please ring the school office and we will relay the message for you.
Excursions/Events:
Payments and consent must be submitted before the due date on Compass or the student may not be permitted to attend the excursion. The office will not accept payments or consent past the due date without prior approval from the Assistant Principal.
If there is any concern over the cost of an excursion or the ability to pay, please contact the Principal’s Secretary via the school office. No child will be excluded from any compulsory excursion due to money constraints, however students or parents must inform their coordinator or appropriate person before the due date.
Family Information:
Please ensure that you advise the office of any change in family circumstances or contact details including email addresses, telephone numbers and residential and postal addresses. This will assist the school with the communication process throughout the year. Important messages are sent out via email so it is essential that the school is informed of current email addresses. Carers of students who travel on school buses are required to update address details online via the Transport NSW website, apps.transport.nsw.
Newsletter:
The school newsletter will be sent via Compass to parents every second Friday and available via the school website.
School Policies:
Please refer to the school website (via the Admin menu) or student diary, for school policies regarding jewellery, shoes, uniform and the consequences involved in non compliance with these policies.
Please do not hesitate to contact me via email, info@sjedow.catholic.
