Enrolment time for Year 7, 2020
We are currently undertaking the enrolment process at St John’s. Each year we welcome another group of students and their families to join our school community and they bring to us their talents and stories.
The students who join us as a Year 7 cohort come from over 27 schools to become one new group of young people sharing their high school journey together. They quickly become one cohesive group as they are supported to get to know each other and develop new friendships.
St John’s is an exceptional learning environment that clearly lives the vision of a community based on catholic values that delivers excellence in a peaceful environment. I know that I can take any visitor around our school at any time and they will witness students learning and supporting each other. We are currently conducting enrolment interviews and most comment on the quality of the students who currently attend. They name their friendly manner, their respectfulness and community involvement as evidence of what wonderful young people that they are. They also identify St John’s as having high standards around everything we do from learning, use of technology (including mobile phones) and personal presentation. If you know someone who is intending to enrol their child please remind them to complete their enrolment form immediately as the process is well underway.

Staff Development Day
On Monday staff worked collegially to develop their skills in providing feedback to their students. Learning is a growth journey and feedback is the tool they use to grow their skills. The school has been on a journey of ‘Visible Learning’ that has seen us develop an Aspiration statement for our school and Learning dispositions that will help them achieve this aspiration. These underpin our learning process and will be a part of the language and teaching practice around learning at St John’s.
Working Bee
It was wonderful to see so many families join us for the working bee. We have the most wonderfully connected community and people are so willing to support the school in these events. We also had a fun time and did some fantastic work improving the school gardens and environment. The day concluded with a BBQ and lots of friendly chatter.
Thanks to our Parent and Friends committee and to the many students, staff and families who attended, provided morning tea or made a donation:

School Photos
Our school photos are happening on Wednesday 5 June 2019. A reminder that our high expectations of uniform are enforced for school photographs as they are a formal record of our community. Therefore, all students, boys and girls, should have their hair tied back if it is below collar length. Boys must be clean shaven. Piercings and excessively heavy make up are not acceptable. All students are to wear their blazers. Please ensure that skirt lengths should be to the knees and that correct socks and shoes are worn. If students are unsure, please discuss this with PALS teachers. Students who do not present in their full winter uniform, will not be in the photos.
PLEASE NOTE: Students who have not returned their media consent forms or who have denied photo access will NOT be in the PALS and Group photos - including the Year 12 photo. These are published in the school year book and therefore permission is needed. Students can have their individual photographs taken. Students wishing to be in these group photographs must return the consent forms ASAP.
Have a great week.

Your Choicez
As mentioned in previous newsletters, both David and Katie Kobler from Your Choicez met with our Year 9 and 10 students, educating, inspiring and empowering them in the area of healthy and respectful relationships.
Foundation Day
St John’s Foundation Day is coming up in a few weeks on Friday 7 June. Foundation Day is a day for the whole school to celebrate the culture of St John’s. There will be as usual a Mass on this day and we ask that all students are dressed in full winter uniform for this Mass. Students may then bring appropriate mufti clothing to change into for the activities section of the day. Teachers and students are working in PALS classes to organise fantastic PALS group stalls for fundraising on the day for a very worthy cause. Please help encourage your child to be involved and to be a big part of the success of the stall. The money raised goes to both St Vincent de Paul and Timor Leste' which are such worthy charities.

NAPLAN
Year 9 have finished their NAPLAN exams for 2019 with Mathematics our final exam on Tuesday 21 May. The exams have run very smoothly and I wish to congratulate the year group in the way they have diligently worked towards doing their best to complete this national exam online for the first time. The students had their computers and other equipment ready to go with little fuss or reminders. Special thanks to our IT department and curriculum office staff who helped prepare the students which effectively allowed this new way of doing NAPLAN to run as efficiently as it did.
Choicez Presentation
On Wednesday 22 May Year 9 and 10 were engaged in the ‘YOUR CHOICEZ’ presentation by David and Katie Kobler. We have been running the ‘YOUR CHOICEZ’ programme with our stage 5 learners for several years now as we feel it is a very valuable programme. Parents were invited to attend a workshop session where these very experienced guest speakers talked to our parents about a variety of issues facing our youth today as they grow and begin needing to make young adult choices.
Diary Usage
Please keep a close eye on your child’s dairy and remember to sign it every week as this is a very valuable tool for teachers, students and parents to communicate and plan good learning and homework skills.
Extra Curricular Update
The photos below showcase some of the activities Year 9 have been involved in over the past few months. The science students have been doing experiments investigating and modelling volcanoes in their science classes while the PDHPE classes continue to get to enjoy the outdoors fine tuning their physical skills and sportsmanship on the back oval. In April the 3 bushcraft classes went bush to hone their newly found bush skills in the beautiful environs of the Shoalhaven bush. We have also had great success and team building with our girls soccer this term at the Diocesan soccer gala day. It’s always full ball here at St John’s with such a diverse range of learning activities on offer for our students no matter where their skills lie.

NEWS FROM THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
Year 7
Students in Year 7 have really settled into working scientifically in the science labs learning to collaborate and work effectively together to develop their understanding of the states of matter and investigating their properties.
On Thursday 30 May, all Year 7 students will be attending a compulsory excursion to Shoalhaven Zoo. This excursion is part of their current science unit on Biology where students will be examining animal adaptations and relating these to the animals’ natural environment.
Year 8
Students are using modeling to understand the Geological processes involved in the formation of Conglomerate rocks.
Students have also looked to understand how to harness the energy of the sun to make chocolate coated marshmallows, within the renewable energies topic.
Year 8 are now embarking on a chemistry unit of work and this week have a chemistry show attending the school to further inspire their learning in Science.
Year 9
Students undertaking Environment studies are investigating sustainable housing, whilst considering the effect of the built environment on the nature and available resources.
Students are exploring the connectivity between geology and chemistry by modelling the processes within volcanic eruptions in a safe learning environment.
Year 10
Students in Year 10 are fast approaching subject selection for stage 6 in 2020 and have this year sampled a unit of work in all of the sciences so that they may be better situated to make their subject selections.
Year 10 students will have the opportunity next week to explore the universe with a Planetarium visit to St John’s, spending about an hour exploring the universe to enhance their space topic. Students will also complete an assessment task based on this theme, with many students already commenced upon their research task.
Year 11
Biology students investigated Australia’s ancient past and tracked a myriad of changes to its native flora and fauna as a result of climate change. On the Mt Keira escarpment our students explored the complex structure of an ancient rainforest remnant.
Examining the diversity and distribution of rainforest trees and epiphytes, before undertaking an in-depth analysis of the Moreton Bay Fig and the Fig wasps.
Earth and Environmental Science students are investigating soil composition and soil chemistry through a series of testing regimes in preparation of future fieldwork in a number of locations around the Shoalhaven and further afield.
Year 12
Depth study completed investigating Genetic disease followed by investigating sickle cell (blue gel with pink bands) and cancer genes (dark gel with yellow bands) using gel electrophoresis to explore the inheritance patterns of Mendelian genetics. Year 12 Biology students will be participating in a learning experience at the University of Sydney on this excursion, students will learn about the importance of biotechnology in several aspects of our society including medicine, agriculture and industry. Students will be given an introductory tutorial on genetic modification, bacterial transformation and research performed at the University of Sydney.
Earth and Environmental students modelling the science behind the enhanced greenhouse effect, sometimes referred to as climate change or global warming. This practical demonstrates the impact on the climate from the additional heat retained due to the increased amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that humans have released into the earth’s atmosphere since the industrial revolution.

Engineering
During the holidays, James Doosey and I participated in the Cochlear Autumn School of Engineering Program at UTS from 15-18 April. The week consisted of 4 University trips to UNSW, UTS, University of Sydney and Macquarie University where they ran us through engineering activities and gave us a tour of the engineering departments at each of the universities. We also visited various engineering industries such as ANSTO, Royal
Australian Air Force, Cochlear and Transport NSW with a tour around Central station and presentation on the new monorail system in Sydney. One night we were even able to meet young engineers and ask them questions about their jobs and what it was like studying engineering at Uni. The week was beneficial as it allowed us to learn more about engineering, the variety of jobs within the field and allowed us to meet like-minded people from all over NSW. I would highly recommend this program for future students with interests in science and engineering.

NEWS FROM THE MATHS DEPARTMENT
The following Year 7 and 8 students have shown outstanding diligence toward their studies so far this year. All of these students have been recognised as Maths 200 Club members multiple times for having demonstrated 200% or more growth in a 2 week cycle. Almost half the students in Year 7 and 8 have achieved this standard at least once this year. It is wonderful to recognise that this list of students includes those who have always achieved highly in Maths as well as those who have, in the past, believed that Maths was too difficult for them. Our program allows students to work at their own level. With the support of their teacher and parents students can demonstrate real growth through their own consistent efforts.
Phoebe Broome (4), Samuel Byrne (4), Belle Lochrin (4), Ryan Malecki (4), Danielle Molloy (4), Natalija Barac (3), Liv Bendall (3), Jaimi Chapman (3), Lauren Davies (3), Bridget Fairs (3), Hayley Few (3), Annabelle Fitch (3), Jack Harrison (3), Talika Irvine (3), Amelia McCarthy (3), Robert McLean (3), Samia Mouawad (3), Olivia Oke (3), Matthew Page (3), Andrew Percy (3), Riley Power (3), Mia Ryan (3), Fiona Sarkar (3), Benjamin Seibright (3), Oscar Tunney-Roberts (3)
If you would like to learn more about our Year 7 and 8 Maths Program a short video introducing parents to it can be found here.
Learning From Videos in Maths
For a number of year now videos of teachers explaining concepts or delivering learning content have been very useful in the Maths classroom. Videos allow students to use rewind/replay to watch and listen again to things they are struggling with. They virtually have a teacher at home with them to assist them. Videos can also give students an alternate way of understanding a concept. Videos allow students to catch up on taught content if they are absent from school. Year 11 and 12 students all have access to Edrolo. This is a platform which uses videos of experienced Maths teachers presenting concepts whilst asking the student to answer questions along the way. Wide use of past HSC questions further students understanding. At St John’s, we ask that students always write notes when watching any video. The teacher in the video should be treated as the teacher in the classroom, when concepts are being explained then students should be taking notes as they would in the classroom
Sometimes videos are used to enable “flip learning” where the students watch/listen to a teacher and take notes at home and then come to class to actually work with the new concept (flipping the traditional pattern of learning). In this way they have the teacher on hand when they are tackling the more difficult questions that they may be required to answer.

Shoalhaven Eisteddfod Dance Troupes
Our three dance companies danced in the City of Shoalhaven Eisteddfod! Congratulations to our Senior Troupe who placed 1st, and our Year 8 Troupe placing 3rd, with the Year 7 Troupe only one mark behind. We are so proud of our 50 dance students and their teacher. Phenomenal performance and teamwork, well done!
Shoalhaven Dean Young & Steelers Shield Under 14’s and 16’s Rugby League
On 23 May, myself and Mr Chard took two teams to Bomaderry Sporting Complex to compete in the Dean Young and Steelers Shield against a number of other Shoalhaven teams. While the Under 14s battled bravely through the competition, unfortunately, they did not make the finals. The Under 16s, on the other hand, had a narrow loss to Kiama but followed up with fine form against Bomaderry, putting them into the grand final against a damaging Ulladulla. Full of confidence from their win over Bomaderry, the boys took the early lead. Ulladulla struck next, however, then courage and intensity of Mr Chard’s Under 16s was too much for the competition and the boys ran away with a Grand Final win! Congratulations to all of the boys, they represented our school with pride and passion. A special congratulations to the super coach Mr Chard and the victorious Under 16 SJE Rugby League Team.
Netball and Cricket
The last few weeks we have also seen a number of students attend NSWCCC trials in their chosen sports. Well done to Samuel Maher (AFL), Shania Campbell-Cooper (Netball) and Isabel Goodwin (Netball) for attending these events.

Diocesan Soccer (Football) Gala Days
Junior Girls
With the cooler morning and minimal training the 13’s girls started the day well. Our first game against Corpus Christi resulted with an unlucky goal and a 1-nil loss. As the day warmed up, so did the girls. With great attack down the wings from both Nakita and Charlie the girls came away with a 6-1 win with Kate Drinkwater scoring a hat trick. With Ruby’s strong ball control in the midfield as well as solid defense from Jess and Marcelle the next game remained scoreless with a nil all draw. The girls were unlucky in the last game with a hand ball in the box penalty. The girls fought hard to come back to one all. Finishing an awesome day with third in our pool and just missing the semi-finals by 1 point. Thank you to all the girls for a great day of soccer.
Mrs Hayley Prayetno
PDHPE Teacher
Intermediate Girls
Congratulations to the girls intermediate soccer team who played some fantastic games of soccer. Well done girls!
Open Girls
On 3 May, the Senior Girls Football team travelled to Woonona to participate in the Annual Diocesan Football Tournament. The girls had a good day, finishing 5th overall, losing 1, drawing 1 and winning 3. By the time our last game came around the girls started to reach their potential, winning 8 - 0 against St Joseph’s. Throughout the day a representative from the Diocese carefully watched all the individual players participating in the tournament, in order to select a representative team. We had 5 students selected in the representative team and 1 selected as a shadow player. Congratulations to Olivia Delahenty, Zoe Anderson, Casey Johnson, Taniesha Angelkovski, Jasmine Tan and Jessie Abbott.
Well done to the whole team for a successful day!
Mr Joshua Watson
PDHPE Teacher
Junior Boys
On the first game we lost 0-1 but we put up a good fight. The next game we won with Matthew Page’s awesome goal! Two games in and we were very tired but thankfully we had a two game break. Hugh Vaughan had some awesome goalkeeper saves.
At the end of the pool matches we came third out of five with 2 wins and 2 losses. We played for fifth/sixth match place and Lachlan Heywood got an early goal to secure the match. Other strong performers were Riley and Josh.

The New NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy
Food and Drink Benchmark
Term 1 2019 there will be a few changes to the canteen menu, to comply with the new NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy, which replaces the old Traffic Light criteria of food and drinks that can be sold in school canteens. This means three quarters of the menu is everyday food from the five food groups and one quarter of the menu is occasional foods with a 3.5 or higher food star rating. Some food items high in sugar, salt and/or saturated fats that do not reach a 3.5 food star rating will be removed from the menu, eg. iced tea, Ovaltinis, cough lollies, JJ's Jumpies and some ice creams, so not too many changes. The canteen staff are working hard sourcing new and nutritious snacks and ice creams to add to the menu, eg. dip & nibbles packs, cheese dip & biscuits, fruit pikelets & scones, house made pasta dishes & salads, frozen juice cups and coconut juice ice blocks. There will be lots of new items to choose from. If you have any questions, ideas or a few hours spare to volunteer in the canteen, please contact the Canteen Manager on 4423 1359.
The school offers the convenience of online lunch orders for all students. If you wish to order online please click on the school lunch online image on the website to register.
Close off for orders is 8.30am daily, a 25c transaction fee applies. If there are any discrepancies with your order, please contact 1300 787 939.
Volunteers please note: Sign in at the School Office on the computerised system before you commence your shift. Please wear enclosed shoes, long hair tied back, no excessive jewellery (i.e. rings, bracelets).
