Dear Parents and Carers,
On the 9th of May, a dedicated group of St John’s teachers and students trekked up to Kiama to compete in our annual school Athletics Carnival and from all accounts, it was a true celebration of talent, determination, and school spirit. Although this year’s event was limited to competitors only, the energy on the field was electric. Students gave their all in every event, from sprints and relays to high jump and discus, proudly representing their houses and setting new personal bests.
While we missed the cheers and support of the wider school community, we’re actively exploring ways to bring the carnival back as a full school-wide event, making this celebration of athleticism and school spirit accessible to all once again. A huge congratulations to all our athletes—you made us proud! And to our community: thank you for your continued support. We can’t wait to cheer together again soon.

On 12th May, the Parents & Friends Association met to discuss the academic, wellbeing, and faith progress of our school. It was fantastic to meet again and discuss with gratitude just how far we’ve come and excitement for what lies ahead. While we trialed a recording and potential streaming of the event, technical difficulties meant that the recording was unfortunately not up to standard. We will review this prior to our next meeting and again look at offering opportunities for all to engage especially those hampered by distance.
Among the highlights were several new ventures aimed at enhancing our physical facilities:
- Playground Landscaping: Minor upgrades will refresh and revitalise outdoor areas while maintaining the beautiful natural landscape that carries throughout our school.
- New Undercover COLA Area: The construction of a large, sheltered space is due to start later this term and will complement our fitness gym and provide additional coverage for students during all weather conditions.
- Bathroom Upgrades: Hopefully by the end of the year, major refurbishment and demolition work will transform our existing bathrooms into single-use stalls with external basins, improving both privacy and hygiene. In addition to this, a new build on the oval will also support student’s greater access to bathrooms and minimise congestion.
In Week 5, our Year 10 students will begin their subject selection process for senior study. It’s a privilege to offer such a wide range of choices, but it’s essential to follow the principle of “right course, right student, right outcome.” When students choose subjects aligned with their interests and abilities, they unlock incredible opportunities. However, selecting based on peer influence or perceived prestige can lead to disengagement and underperformance. We encourage all students and families to engage in open conversations with teachers, ask thoughtful questions, and work in partnership to ensure the best outcomes for every learner.
The Year 10 2025 / Year 11 2026 Subject Selection Informatiion Evening will be held on Thursday 5 June at 5.30pm in the school hall and is compulsory for all students and their parents/carers to attend.
Finally, we continue to be impressed by the engagement and focus of our students in Years 7–12. This commitment to learning has led to a noticeable decrease in disruptive behaviours in the classroom. While there’s always room for growth, we want to celebrate the many students who embody what it means to be a St John’s student—respectful, curious, and committed to excellence.
Warm regards
Acting Principal

DV Awareness Cup returns for 2025 | Dragons
What an amazing start to the term for Year 7. It is so amazing to see how settled they have become. It is truly evident they feel and are a apart of the school community.
Students will be doing some organisation in PALS in the coming weeks. On Thursday we planned ahead and looked at the tasks and assessments they have coming up. I encourage you to look through your child's diary and see what assessments and homework they have to complete. It is important that students set time aside each afternoon/night to reflect on their learning of the day and work on any homework tasks or assessments they have coming up.
A reminder about who to contact if there are any concerns that you are having with your child's wellbeing or learning. Emailing the school at info@sje.dow.catholic.edu.au and asking to direct the email to the specific person you need. Teachers will respond as soon as they can but please allow time for teachers to get back to you.
YEAR 7 RELIGION

YEAR 7 SPORT

I am so excited to see what the rest of the term has in store for Year 7 especially seeing them enjoy their first Foundation Day. A reminder that for this event there is full winter uniform with students having the option to change later in the day. This is an important event in the school's calendar and it is an expectation that all students attend. Students will be learning more about the day in their upcoming RE lessons.
“Be gentle and humble in heart”
Ms Sophie Daley
Year 7 Leader of Wellbeing
We look forward to celebrating Foundation Day on Friday of Week 6. This is a significant occasion in our school calendar, and students will engage in activities that reflect on our community’s values, history, and spirit. Like last year, the day will begin with a whole school Mass. Students are expected to wear their full school winter uniform for this reverent event. Students can then change into mufti clothes for the fair part of the day. All PALS groups will be running a stall and will work together to raise money for an important cause. Each PALS group should now have finalised their chosen activity and be working closely with their PALS teacher to plan an engaging and successful stall.
MENTAL HEALTH SURVEY
All Year 8 students recently participated in a Mental Health and Wellbeing Survey. This data will help guide our ongoing support programs and ensure we are meeting the needs of our students both pastorally and academically. Mr Whatling and I have already started to meet with some students who have identified concerns for their wellbeing and will be in touch with families if required.
SUBJECT SELECTION EVENING - THURSDAY 19 JUNE
The Year 9 2026 Subject Selection Evening will take place on Thursday 19 June, beginning at 5:15pm. This is a vital evening as students begin to consider their elective choices for next year. Attendance is expected, and we encourage both students and parents to come along with questions and an open mind.
SOCIAL MEDIA MONITORING
We kindly remind parents and carers to continue monitoring their child’s use of social media. Open conversations at home, along with guidance about safe and respectful online behaviour, play a critical role in supporting the wellbeing of our students.
Currently, it’s common for teenagers to have two Instagram profiles—one they’re comfortable sharing with parents and family, and another intended only for their friends. This dual presence can pose significant risks, including exposure to inappropriate content, online peer pressure, and interactions without adult oversight.
We encourage families to stay actively involved, maintain open lines of communication, and regularly check in with their child about their online activity. Your support is invaluable in helping them navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.
DIGITAL DISCIPLESHIP LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
Eight Year 8 students were selected to attend a recent Digital Discipleship Leadership Program. They engaged in discussions around digital responsibility, ethical leadership, and using online platforms to inspire positive change in our community. Congratulations to these students on representing our school so thoughtfully.
VISUAL ART
Ms Hayes' Year 8 Visual Art classes have been studying Portraiture this semester. Students have learned graphite pencil techniques to create realistic self portraits. As an extension to this task, students have created mixed media artworks based on their graphite drawing. These artworks use a combination of collage, drawing and painting techniques. a combination of collage, drawing and painting techniques. Well done to these classes for engaging so fully with this task and creating such amazing works of art!
Thank you for your continued support throughout Term 2.
'With Jesus we can reach the highest of heights.'
Ms Abbey Simis
Year 8 Leader of Wellbeing
YEAR 12 ABORIGINAL STUDIES MAJOR PROJECTS
Earlier this term, Year 12 Aboriginal Studies presented their major projects to family, friends and community. The breadth of topics this year was great to see with topics from NRL, Racism, The Uluru Statement from the Heart, Self-Determination in the Tourism Industry, Importance of Water and Bush Foods. Students confidently presented the process they went through and the findings of their research. Overall it was a wonderful celebration of the students' learning process. Well done!!
YEAR 12 ABORIGINAL STUDIES MINI MAJOR
Year 11 Aboriginal Studies class will spend this term completing their local case study, also known as the mini major, they will use the 2025 NAIDOC theme as the basis for their project and present a segment at this years NAIDOC assembly. This is NAIDOCs 50th Anniversary and the theme this year “celebrates not only the achievements of the past but the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities, and the legacy of our ancestors.” (National NAIDOC Theme | NAIDOC 2025). As part of this project students will connect with community members and organisations starting with attending Sorry Day on May 26th and Waminda Gardens on the 4th June.
YEAR 11 BUSINESS SERVICES
At The Office @ Johnnies (The OJ), students are exploring the benefits of diverse work environments and implementing ideas for sustainability. Students presented rehearsed slides with speaker notes. The presentation slides used the 5-5-5 rule of powerpoints with limited information and large fonts.
YEAR 10 HISTORY ELECTIVE
History in Film
Students presented research and a pitch into which movie has the most historic accuracy and importance. Within their research they needed to evaluate how close the movie portrayed actual events.
Some of the movies the class was interested in included The Other Boylen Girl, Pearl Harbour, Saving Private Ryan and 300 just to name a few.
Machu Picchu Excursion
In Week 3, the class travelled to Sydney to visit the Australian Museum’s Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru exhibition. Students had the opportunity to see over 130 ancient artefacts including exquisite jewellery, funerary objects from royal tombs and one of the most impressive gold collections to tour the globe.
YEAR 11 ANCIENT HISTORY
Students completed their historical investigation which included completing research and an artefact on an element of Ancient History. The artefacts created were impressive ranging from tapestries, volcanoes and Greek mythology models.
YEAR 9 GEOGRAPHY
Students have started to explore the Australian Museums Future Now exhibition for the topic Changing Places. Using this exhibition students will explore innovations in urban design which will undoubtedly change the way we live in the future. This follows on from a case-study where students watched “Eat Pray Build” a foreign correspondent episode which explores how tourism is changing Bali, including the building of a 183m glass elevator and viewing deck at KelingKing beach.
YEAR 10 HISTORY MANDATORY
Year 10 have been learning about the Holocaust. Mrs Daley led Ms Berrymans class in an active timeline activity. Students had to place individual victims of the holocaust on a timeline. They then had to look at the effect of historical events on the persecution of these individuals. Physically seeing the time line and the effect that events had on individuals makes the time period relevant for these students. Later this terms students will be travelling to the Sydney Jewish Museum where they will have the opportunity to meet a Holocaust survivor and explore many of the artifacts in the museum.
YEAR 12 SOCIETY AND CULTURE
The Personal Interest Project (PIP) is well underway for Year 12 Society and Culture Students. The PIP is a major commitment for 12SAC students, making up 40% of their total mark when it comes to their HSC. Students get to pick a topic that interests them, and then spend time conducting research, both primary and secondary, on the topic while making comments on how the topic relates back to the course concepts that are fundamental to Society and Culture. This has also seen some awesome connections made between SJE students and 11 other schools, as we have been sharing our questionnaire links in a continuous google doc in a “PIP Research Swap.”
Some of the topics that students are exploring for their PIPs include (but are not limited to!):
- A New Age of Romanticism?, which aims to explore whether we are entering a new age of Romanticism, prioritising feelings over logic and reason, with an increased focus on the need for escapism during moments of political and social tension, such as the COVID-19 Pandemic and events following.
- The Relationship Epidemic - a project which aims to assess/explore the impact of Westernisation and Western popular culture versus the values and beliefs of Eastern societies in terms of relationship ideals.
- From Strength to Strain: Unpacking Toxic Gym Culture and its Impact on Society - a project which aims to explore the idea of gym culture, and whether there is a toxic undertone within a culture that promotes the ideals of health, body image and staying fit.
- To All The Boys I’ve Never Loved Before - focusing on the unrealistic expectations and standards placed on teenagers through the lens of the teen film genre.
Overall, students are working well, having just completed a NESA progress check. We will continue to dedicate time in-class to working solidly on their PIP’s in preparation for the final progress check in Week 8. Students are encouraged to complete their drafts prior to the next school holidays in order to obtain meaningful feedback before final submission.

RECENT EVENTS
Charles Sturt University and The University of Sydney - Outreach
On May 8 and May 14, a group of motivated Year 11 and 12 students took the initiative to attend lunchtime outreach sessions with representatives from the University of Sydney and Charles Sturt University. These informative sessions provided valuable insights into a range of tertiary pathways and highlighted the importance of early preparation for life after school.
Students explored available courses, university prerequisites, and the role of assumed knowledge. They also gained an understanding of bridging programs designed to support learning and close knowledge gaps, especially useful for those coming from regional or rural backgrounds.
A key focus was the comprehensive support offered by both universities, including scholarships and tailored resources for students from diverse backgrounds. University ambassadors spoke candidly about student life, study load, and the many opportunities to work and grow while studying.
The sessions also touched on new course offerings, labour market trends, and future career prospects, providing students with a realistic and inspiring view of what lies ahead.
Both the University of Sydney and Charles Sturt University are globally ranked institutions, and our students walked away feeling informed, encouraged, and excited about their future. With all questions answered and plenty of support on offer, the future is indeed looking bright.
