"An authentic faith – which is never comfortable or completely personal – always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this earth somehow better than we found it.”
Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium
SJE SEE, REFLECT, ACT: THANKS DR DOMINIC FRAWLEY
Catholic Social Teaching offers a way of thinking, being and seeing the world. It provides a vision for a just society in which the dignity of all people is recognised, and those who are vulnerable are cared for.
See, Reflect, Act: The tradition of Catholic Social Teaching encourages a process of:
- Looking at the social justice issues as they affect society - SEE
- Understanding what is happening and why it is happening - REFLECT
- Discerning the actions needed to respond - ACT
Each term a meeting is held gathering members from St John’s and the wider community to consider our actions that align with catholic social teaching. This team has been chaired by Dr Dominic Frawley and other attendees including Johnnies Vinnies leaders, Nowra President of St Vincent de Paul, Mrs Vanessa Kidson as SJE St Vincent de Paul patron, Mr David Muller for Timor and immersions, Mr David Comensoli as REC, Fr Duane/Leo as priest, and other attendees as appropriate.
Dr Dominic Frawley will be resigning as the chair and I would like to acknowledge his
outstanding contribution to our school community. His passion for social justice has driven this team and he has certainly made a difference for the people of the Shoalhaven and especially for us here at St Johns.
Mr Mark Burian will step into the chairperson role, in which we thank Mark and know he will make positive contributions.
SENIOR RETREAT
Waterslea on the beautiful Shoalhaven River was the location for the retreat for our Year 12, 2020 students this week.
STUDY SKILLS AND PLANNING
At St John’s we have the goal for each student to achieve their potential in life and lead fulfilled and meaningful lives.
We work each day in every moment to challenge students to make the most of each learning experience so they may self assess and receive feedback for improvement. It is also important for students to stop and acknowledge how much they have learnt and can offer to others.
Central to good outcomes is good preparation. One area that many students are challenged in is that of planning and using their time effectively. It is important that all students sit down each evening to do some independent study. This is often a matter of completing tasks teachers have set or for Stage 4 students, doing Maths Pathways and Word Flyers. However for many students there is no set work or assessment. It is still important to honour the study time.
The question should never be;
“Do you have homework tonight”,
but rather;
“When are you doing your study tonight?”
The best location for younger students is generally at the family table where they can be encouraged and supported, but for older students who have developed their study skills, a personal desk may be more suitable. Whatever the location it is essential for students to develop good practices, undertake the time and spend it effectively, rather than procrastinate:
Consistent practice will certainly lead to positive outcomes.
Mrs. Sandra Hogan
Principal
This week we welcomed Year 5 students from St Mary's, Milton and St Michael's Nowra to join our school community for a day. It was a great opportunity for the Primary students to get a taste of high school.
The morning was enjoyed immersed in the world of science, with Year 5 students conducting experiments with the assistance of our students. Following this, students enjoyed watching a magical chemistry show performed by none other than our Principal Mrs Hogan.
The afternoon session also provided students with learning opportunities at the Farm, in Bushcraft and Drama.
A huge thank you to the students who helped out on the day as well as to the staff who made the day possible.
We farewelled the Year 5’s who had had an exciting and fun-filled day, all very excited about their learning future.
In the coming weeks we will be talking to the girls about issues around the wearing of their sport shorts. In recent times, a significant number of girls have been wearing the sports shorts inappropriately. It seems that students are purchasing shorts which are smaller than their regular sizing and as such they are both too tight and too short. I will be meeting with the girls next week and reminding them of the expectations around the wearing of our sports shorts. I do understand that this is a sensitive issue and the topic will be discussed with respect and dignity. We will be requiring the relevant students to address this uniform requirement over the holidays and return to school in 2020 with appropriately sized shorts.
Have a great week!
Mrs. Leonie Pearce
ATTENDANCE
As part of our care and support for all students at SJE, we conduct regular attendance checks, make wellbeing calls home and arrange support meetings for parents/carers and students to explore relevant and effective strategies in maintaining the regular attendance for all students. While this happens regularly throughout the year, we run a whole school overview in Weeks 4 and 9 of each term.
As such, I would like to remind parents/carers and students of the Catholic Education Office, Dioceses of Wollongong’s (CEDoW) Attendance Policy and our role in supporting the regular attendance of your son, daughter or person in your care. A policy that is also mandated by NSW Law.
In order to do this, CEDoW and SJE have identified five main areas where, by law, we will need to contact parents in regard to concerns around attendance. These include:
Step 1: When attendance falls below 90% (explained or unexplained)
a. Student meeting and Step 1 letter sent home outlining the concern.
Step 2: When attendance falls below 85% (explained or unexplained)
a.Student interviewed by Year Coordinator, parents/carers contact by phone to discuss possible supports and Step 2 letter sent home.
Step 3: When attendance remains below 85% (explained or unexplained)
a.Student and Parents interviewed by Pastoral Care Coordinator, where needed,a learning plan is developed to assist parent/carer and student in improving attendance, CEDoW informed. Registered Step 3 letter sent home.
Step 4: When attendance continues to remain below 85% (explained or unexplained)
a.Student and Parent/Carer meets with Pastoral Care Coordinator, Assistant Principal and/or Principal and registered Step 4 letter sent home. CEDoW will advise on further actions.
Step 5: Above 30 days (notionally)
a.By law, SJE will report the concerns to Family and Community Services (FaCS) and Parents/Carers will received a registered letter from CEDoW. If not enrolled, CEDoW will notify FaCS and NSW Department of Education.
While we do understand there may be illness or family circumstances that, at times, will impact on a student’s attendance, we are still required by law to make contact with parents/carers at each identified step. The only exception is when family’s lodge a form to the Principal asking for exemption. These steps also align with student punctuality and/or early leave.
If you believe there are concerns surrounding the attendance of your child or the person in your care, please do not hesitate to contact your Year Coordinator as soon as possible to arrange a support meeting.
If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me on the school number.
Mr. James Eirth
Pastoral Care Coordinator

E-SAFETY WEBSITE LAUNCH
The eSafety website esafety.gov.au has been relaunched. It comes with a PDF guide (Click here to access) to lead you through the new functionality.
‘We’ve spent the last 18 months working alongside various experts to create, refresh and streamline eSafety’s content. Every page on our site has been updated with tailored advice, resources, and support to ensure we help Australians have empowering and positive experiences online.
Almost a third of the website features exciting new material, including our section for young people, guided by young people. Not only is this a great resource for students, but the topics can help with online safety conversations in Australian classrooms.
Over 300 of our resources, including our popular education resources, have been refreshed and rebranded and are easier to find using our new filter feature. Now, you can search by education level and topic to ensure you find what best resonates with your specific school context and classroom needs. We have also retired some of our older resources — with new research and technology, they have become outdated and are no longer relevant.
Our new online safety hub presents an incredible opportunity to reach a broader range of Australians and make them aware of eSafety’s resources and services.’

Some of the feedback received from students about the retreat include:
“Thankyou for the wonderfully enlightening retreat experience”;
“Being able to connect with others and coming to the understanding that everyone has different stories and difficulties”;
“I gained a different view on my spirituality”;
“I enjoyed relaxing and taking time away from school”;
“I have experienced a lot and will take a lot out of it, a very beneficial experience”
PRESENTATION AND INFORMATION EVENING
Thankyou to the parents who attended last week’s presentation and HSC information evening. It was wonderful to have your support and helped in making the evening a special one for Year 11. At the presentation, we recognised and celebrated the achievements of students who have achieved academically, the quiet achievers; the athletes and those students who have involved themselves in extracurricular activities. Below is a list of the recipients:
During the evening, the work of Ms Sarah Blades in supporting the Year group over the last 3 years was also acknowledged. She has guided and moulded these students into a cohesive, well rounded and respectful year group. She has given time and energy into ensuring students were supported and their well being valued and maintained. Ms Blades is moving into the role of HSIE coordinator.
Thankyou to Mrs Lisa Murphy, our Curriculum Coordinator, who shared with parents and students important information about the expectations and responsibilities of students during the HSC year. This included a reminder to parents about the new rules regarding assessments in the HSC year - a student who is not present for an assessment or does not hand in an assessment task will receive a zero mark, unless a doctors certificate is supplied. This includes family holidays which are not considered to be a legitimate reason.
Applications for special provisions for the HSC are being processed now. Detailed documentation is required for students applying for special provisions, it is important that this is actioned now, please check your emails or contact me at school if you have any questions.
I encourage students to continue to work hard in the lead up to Christmas. Unlike previous years where things begin to wind down, this year will be different in that students will have to work consistently up until the last day. I wish students well in their studies and thank parents for their support.

NEWS FROM THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
STEM WORKSHOPS
Our Year 9 students this week have been given parent notifications for a valuable opportunity to immerse themselves in all things STEM for a day on Thursday 21 November, taking on challenges designed to develop a range of useful science, technology, engineering and mathematics, thinking skills.
Organised by the school, the day engages students in four different STEM activities - each testing and exposing students to different STEM competencies. In the changing landscape of today’s - and tomorrow’s - workforce, such skills may enhance employability when looking to apply for jobs and extend careers.
Students will have to think on their feet with each activity and master collaborative teamwork, problem-solving and creativity to overcome challenges and achieve the goals set out in the following four areas:
Bionics - students design bionic hands out of straws and other materials, in order to give independence back to hypothetical patients who have lost a hand through injury or illness. The task requires students to focus on developing the digits (fingers and thumb) for their artificial hand.
Coding - students develop codes for the alphabet using only coloured lights. Applying this code, students are then required to transmit messages effectively to their team.
Skylap - students build simple aircrafts using wooden materials, hot glue, electricity and a propeller. The task requires students to modify their design to meet specific criteria regarding speed, weight and lift.
Catapult - students cooperatively design and construct a catapult to launch a tennis ball in accuracy and distance trials.
ICAS SCIENCE
Last term twelve students again participated in the ICAS Science Competition run by the University of New South Wales ICAS Competition. ICAS science assesses student’s skills in the key scientific areas of:
- Observing and measuring- Noting and measuring features of items and phenomena
- Interpreting data- Interpreting diagrams, tables and graphs
- Applying data- Including inferring, predicting and concluding
- Investigating- Experimental design, use of controls and notion of ‘fair test’
- Higher-order skills- Including reasoning and problem solving
Students achieved some great results with the following achieving Distinctions;
EXPERIENCE IT!
On the final day of Term 3, twenty of our young girls opted to forego the chance of an early holiday by taking up a great opportunity for girls in the ‘Experience it!’ Engineering Workshops, allowing girls from Years 7-10 to challenge themselves and see just what they can achieve, and to learn about the key role of female engineers in the future of the engineering industry in Australia.
Year 8 students Caitlyn Fairs and Cindy Nguyen have provided the following report on the event.
SCIENCE @ ST JOHN'S
Students across all science groups have been busy in their regular lessons working scientifically, challenging many STEM related investigations eg. Measuring speed, designing seatbelts to keep Egbert safe, using mathematical models to calculate missing data so that they can discuss patterns and trends. There are too many activities to mention them all, we encourage you to ask your child about their experiments in science classes.

EQUESTRIAN CHAMPION SCHOOL
St John’s Equestrian Team took part in the 12th Annual Berry Interschool Equestrian Championship on 5-7 October 2019 at Worrigee Equestrian Common.
This year our team consisted of 9 riders who competed in Dressage, Hacking, Sporting, Show jumping, Hunter and the 3 Phase Interschool Challenge with some fantastic results from all students who competed. St John's team spirit and camaraderie shown to their peers is to be commended. All the hard work that goes into preparing a horse and rider to compete at this level paid off as the team won Champion Secondary School for accumulated points from all 9 competitors over the 3 day event.
Some of the highlights include Jack Rutledge who was awarded Champion Year 9 rider and won both the 75cm (Fault and out class) and 90 cm (Superphase class) in the secondary showjumping.
Luca Winchester was awarded Reserve Champion Year 7 rider and won the 75cm showjumping (Superphase class) and the 3 Phase Interschool Challenge.
Lois Fleming was awarded Reserve Champion Secondary Showjump rider and won the 1.05m Showjumping (Jumpoff class), while McKayla Smith won the 60cm Hunter class for years 9-12. Brigitte Herne, Bayli Batchelor, Kieara Richards, Penny small and Kiera Hitchcock all placed in the hacking ring, with Bayli Batchelor receiving outstanding results taking home six 1st place ribbons on the day.
Well done to the St John’s the Evangelist Equestrian Team once again for their outstanding results and team spirit!

Girls AFL
On Friday 18 October eighteen girls from Years 7 to 9 travelled to Macquarie Fields to play in the Dioscesan AFL Gala Day. Our girls were ranked highly in Pool B and started the day against a tough St Mary's team who snatched a deciding quick goal, unfortunately resulting in an 8-1 loss. The newly formed combinations and a fast and physical pace from our team showed lots of promise for the tournament ahead.
During the next three games against Corpus Christi (39-0), Magdalene Catholic College (13-8) and John Terry (13-7) the girls really clicked into gear. Great teamwork, accurate goal shooting and some tough defence led to three wins on the trot. With a 3 - 1 winning record we advanced from Pool B with a 2nd place ranking to take on the winner of Pool A Holy Spirit College in the semi-final. The girls persevered against a skillful Holy Spirit team going down 18-1.
Our final game against St Patricks was a playoff for overall 3rd place. It was an evenly matched contest in which narrowly went down ending our day in 4th place overall.
A special mention to a brave Keeley Longbottom who suffered a painful ankle injury in the dying minutes of the final game. The whole team rallied around her and showed maturity beyond their years to get packed up and patiently wait for an ambulance for Keeley. I was not only very proud of the way they handled themselves on the field, but more importantly the manners, positive nature and helpful attitude this whole team brought to the day. Thank you girls, you were a pleasure to coach.

U/15 BOYS AFL CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Friday 18 October, students from St John the Evangelist travelled to Fred Finchley Park in Berkeley for the U/15 Boys AFL championships. Playing in warm and windy conditions we started the day against St Joseph’s, in an arm wrestle of a match, a late goal to Jarrah Treweek proved to be the difference giving us a two point win, with outstanding performances by Dylan Johnstone, Lachie Almond, Jarrah Treweek and Sam Phillips.
Our next match was a high scoring affair with both sides making the most of the smaller ground. Early goals to Lachie and Adam Staunton kept St John’s in the match but two late goals to Mt Carmel saw them taking a 10 point lead into half time. In an entertaining second half, Mt Carmel were too strong despite goals from Caleb Cook and JarrahTreweek and some excellent play in the midfield from Adam Staunton and Christian Page.
The third match of the day was played in very difficult and windy conditions against John Terry. In a low scoring match, a few missed set shots and a late goal to Reece Manasseh wasn’t enough to give St John's victory going down by 6 points. Lachie Almond and Caleb Cook were prolific in midfield and Dylan Johnstone and Reece were proving a handful up forward.
Our final match of the day was against Holy Spirit. After being solid in defence for most of the day, Charlie Dunn was moved forward and proved to be the difference providing an avenue to goal and kicking four of his own. After taking several strong marks, Cayden Lewis got on the scoreboard with a nice goal and Samuel Phillips and Reece Manasseh continued their strong forward play finishing with a goal each. Due to some excellent work in the midfield by Adam Stauton and Caleb Cook, we were able to hold off a fast finishing Holy Spirit to run away with the victory.
A special mention to Brad Church for his assistance on the day as Assistant Coach, Lead Photographer and Waterboy.

JUNIOR BOYS BASKETBALL
Our sleepy eyed boys basketball teams left school at 6am to travel to the Campbelltown Basketball Stadium to compete in the Diocesan Dala Day.
The Junior team of Lachlan Almond, Lachlan Callaghan, Joshua Costain, Mitchell Davis, Finn Lochrin, Harrison Petre, Benjamin Royston, Austin Shingleton, Dash Stewart and Daniel Walker played well as a team against teams that were generally older and bigger. We had an excellent win in the later stages of the day and we look forward to next year when almost the full team will return in the same division year.

JUNIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Junior Girls Basketball team made their way to Wollongong on Monday 21 October. Dakota Yates, Melanie Staunton, Jarrah Fuz, Phoebe Szymoniczek, Kate Fairbairn, Maggie Smith, Charlotte Roberts and Ruby Marshall made up the team.
Our team was a lot younger and smaller than most of the opposition and the girls showed great sportsmanship and determination throughout the day. Overall, the team finished in 7th position, with stand out players on the day being Dakota Yates, Melanie Staunton and Kate Fairbairn.

JUNIOR BOYS CRICKET- SUPER 8'S COMPETITION
On Wednesday 23 October, our Junior boys competed in the Super 8’s competition at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow. In sunny conditions, we were eager to get off to a good start against St. Josephs. After winning the toss and sending them into bat, a strong opening partnership had our bowlers on the back foot.
After some clever bowling from Campbell Bramley we claimed our first wicket and slowed down the opposition run rate. After the 6 overs we were set a total of 63 to chase. Our opening batters Lachlan Almond and Christian Page both made impressive starts and with two overs to go a victory was insight. A difficult 5th over saw our boys needing 15 runs off the last over for victory. Lachlan (25 runs) and Christian (21 runs) made much needed runs but some line and length bowling and fielders covering the outfield, we fell two runs short of victory.
Our next match was against St Benedict’s. We won the toss and elected to bat.
Daniel Moodley (22 runs) and Christian Page (29 runs) kept the run rate ticketing over with the big hitting Jarrod Griffith (3 runs) coming in the last over and making some handy runs off the last ball. Hunter Gilkes and Jarrod Griffith (1 wicket) opened the bowling with a tight spell not allowing St Benedict’s to get off to a good start. Campbell Bramley and Daniel Moodley continued to apply the pressure bowling on a good length and just outside the off stump. After a loosener at the start of the over, Lachlan Almond found an edge the next ball, breaking up the batting partnership and giving St John's our first victory of the day.
After tasting victory the boys were keen for another win against Magdalene. Hunter Giles smashed the opening ball of the first over but was unfortunately caught at deep square leg, bringing Matthew Page to the crease. In a powerful display of batting prowess both Thomas Hodgkins (35 runs) and Matthew (28 runs) smashed the bowlers all over the park. Coming into the last over it was decided to retire both batters and bring on the bash brothers (Campbell and Cooper Bramley) to make some quick runs in the final over. In our best bowling and fielding display for the day we were able to get Magdalene all out before reaching our score.
Needing to win the last game to give us a chance to finish on top of our pool, we came up against the much fancied Edmund Rice. We won the toss and decided to bat first. Lachlan Almond (10 runs) and Christian Page (11 runs) failed to capitalise on good starts against a very impressive bowling lineup. The big hitting Thomas Hodgkins (7 runs) fell to a lolly of a delivery leaving Matthew Page stranded on 4 runs. Setting our smallest target of the day, Cooper Bramley set a strong bowling line up and held ERC for the first few overs before we eventually broke and they were able to achieve our target with an over to spare.
We played off against Corpus Christi for 5th and 6th place. Despite some great bowling from Hunter Gilkes (two wickets) and an impressive batting performance from Daniel Moodley (30 not out) we were unable to finish the day on a high note.
Special thanks for the parent and grandparent support on the day with scoring and umpiring.

FOOTPRINTS ON COUNTRY
On Thursday 26 September, Gooroon held a joint excursion with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from St Michael’s. The purpose of the excursion was to provide our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with a cultural learning experience on country.
Aunty Christine Campbell sought advice from Aunty Grace and an excursion was organised to Jerrinja Country at Currarong. Aunty Chrissy Locke led a wonderful walk to Whale Point stopping along the way to point out and describe important bush tucker and medicinal plants.
She also showed students the amazing 1900 year old rock shelter used by the ancestors of the Jerrinja people.
Uncle Mark Mongta and Aunty Grace shared their knowledge of tools, weapons and local culture and Uncle Mark explored the beach and rock pools with the students. Aunty Jo Coleman manned the BBQ and kept everyone well fed and did much of the organisation to ensure everyone arrived and returned safely.
Thanks to Aunty Vanessa, Aunty Marion, Aunty Jody, Uncle Leland and Mrs Frawley who assisted on the day. Sincere thanks also to Cory Carter and the St John’s P&F for funding our wonderful lunch. We look forward to planning more Footprints On Country experiences in 2020.
