FAREWELL
This year I will be retiring from teaching and leaving my role as the principal at St John’s.
I have been teaching now for 38 years and am so very blessed to have had a wonderful career working with young people and wonderful staff.
I studied Science at the University of NSW and still have a great passion for the sciences. They never ceased to surprise me and Biology, Ecology, Geology, Chemistry and Physics have helped me deeply understand the natural and physical world and experience the awe of God’s creation at such a practical level.
I began teaching in Kogarah in Sydney and moved to the Shoalhaven in 1992. I can’t believe how lucky we were to have been able to raise our family in this beautiful place.
I started at St John’s in 1997 as a Science teacher and have since moved through a number of leadership roles including Science Coordinator, Curriculum Coordinator, Assistant Principal and then as Principal 8 years ago.
In each of these roles I have learnt so much and truly valued the people who have mentored and worked beside me. I love working with a team of people and that is what we do so well at St John’s.
I have so many memories from fun in Science classes and the fulfillment of watching students learn and seeing the facilities such as the labs improve so much with building programs.
I loved getting involved in sport and used to go each year to triathlon, basketball and netball. But netball was my specialty and I had the privilege of coaching a team that won the State Open Netball Championship .None of the girls played at state level. In typical St John’s fashion it was a champion team rather than a team of champions.
Over the years I have been involved in many building projects however one of these stands out well above the rest.
Our task was to build a mud brick chapel and my task was simple. Work with a team of about 20 students to squish mud between our toes until it is soft and pliable and then scoop handfuls of it up and put them in the molds for bricks. We had a fantastic day playing in the mud and at the end of the process we pressed our hands into those bricks, such a nice thought that our handprints will always be there.
This same chapel features highly in my memories. It is the location of special prayers and liturgies but also the place where we gathered when we lost a member of our school community.
During these sad times we were gifted with the support of each other and a community that shared a strong faith. To me this is what a true Catholic school can offer and I am so proud that St John’s is that school community.
As a Catholic school it has been a joy to work in a faith based community and one in which everyone was supported to learn about and live their faith and spirituality. Our values have underpinned all that we do and to see our young people engaging in a lived experience of not only engaging in prayer and liturgies but putting their beliefs into actions such as social justice.
So what have I loved here at St John’s?
I have loved:
- School events such as Foundation days, school musicals and productions, showcase nights
- School Camps
- The community nature of the school
- Liaising and working with parents and carers who so willingly give their time and support
- School reflection days, retreats and staff spirituality days
- Sports trips with the students
- Excursions and field studies
- Learning about Aboriginal culture and the learning I have had from Aunty Chris.
- Our immersion trips to the Northern Territory and Timor.
I love seeing students learn. I love to see students graduate, hearing the stories about past students, especially if they are happy in their career.
And I still love Teaching!! Over these 26 years I have had the privilege of working with the most amazing people. I love to teach and to work each day with young people and to help them realise their hopes and dreams. It is the absolute best job in the world.
Despite the fact that I was often challenged, having to often make very difficult decisions, I never once didn’t want to go to work.
I have worked with so many people who share my passion for education. They always want the best for our young people and work together for that goal. I have loved the authenticity and honesty of this work place.
St John’s provided for my children the best high school experience that we could have wished for and it has been my passion to extend that to young people of the Shoalhaven.
St John’s is a great school. It is a school where young people can learn to a high level in a peaceful and caring Catholic community.
And so from here: there are some very special people whom I have in my life that I so wish I had more time for. And now I will have that time.
I have been so very blessed to have worked in this school community with so many amazing people and am very excited about my next step.
I will miss the people at St John’s so very much.
2022 HSC RESULTS
Yesterday our Class of 2022 received their final HSC results and we couldn't be prouder of all 111 students! Special mention to the following students;
GIRLS' SHORTS
During 2021 Lowes were provided with the wrong shorts for the girls sports shorts. These shorts were made with much shorter leg length. Once this was drawn to our attention they were withdrawn from sale and gender non-specific shorts that were appropriate have been sold in recent times.
The correct shorts are now available for purchase and Lowes has also agreed to replace any of the shorts with the short leg length with the new shorts over the holiday break. The short leg length shorts will not be permitted to be worn to school in 2023. If you purchased a pair of the sport shorts with the shorter leg length please ensure that you return them to Lowes over the holiday break and replace them with the appropriate sport shorts.

REFLECTION DAY
On 23 November Year 9 participated in their Reflection Day. This Year's theme was ‘Stewards of Creation’.
Year 9 had the opportunity to participate in many interesting and thought provoking activities:
- Analysis and discussion of the Laudato Si’; Vote With Your Feet
- Canticle Meditation
- JAG Walk and Talk at the Sustainable Garden
- Making of Endangered Animals Artwork and discussion
- Cosmic Walking Meditation
- Seed Planting and Reflection at the Yarn Circle
The feedback from our amazing staff members who facilitated these activities reported that the cohort participated with reverence and respect. Many students engaged in deep conversation and took up the challenge to ‘be the change’ our planet deserves.
I would like to thank all of the staff members that ran these group sessions, specifically Mr Jack Lopez who dedicated significant time to ensuring the day ran smoothly and effectively.
YEAR 9 AGRICULTURE
Our Year Nine agriculture class was fortunate to have Mr. Paul Hogan visit the school to sheer our resident alpaca ‘Daniella’.
Students were able to experience firsthand how an alpaca is shorn, gaining valuable knowledge in the different grades of wool from the different parts of the alpacas body.
Thank you to Mr Hogan for donating his time.
YEAR 9 SPORT
Our Year 9 students recently enjoyed the sunshine by the surf playing beach games for sport.
BLACK BELTED BROOKE AMONGST THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY
Mr Joshua Watson
Year 9 Coordinator
What a busy few weeks Year 10 have had. In Week 9 students participated in Work experience. I had the pleasure of visiting some students at their workplaces. It was amazing to see the positive way all students engaged in the experience and the positive feedback from all employers.
In Week 8 students engaged with our Reflection morning, where students were asked to focus on social justice and thinking about those that are less fortunate than ourselves. They participated in both passive and movement activities as a way of opening the students eyes to some of the injustices in the world.
Students have this week been participating in Transition Week. Moving from Year 10 to 11 is one of the biggest steps academically that students will make. Again it was amazing to see the way that students engaged with the week.

NEWS FROM CREATIVE & PERFORMING ARTS
It has been a very busy term for the CAPA faculty. This term saw the return of EAT Theatre after a Covid enforced break for 3 years. The Year 10 Drama students did an amazing job in all aspects of the production including designing costumes, make-up, set, props, sound and lighting.
The diverse range of skills developed by the students across the term was clearly evident in the quality of the production that ran for three nights in Week 8. The cast were incredible in their portrayal of the characters and the story. They were both convincing and dynamic as they brought to life a story of hope set in a future Dystopian World where individuals struggling to survive realised that the only way they could was to unite and work together.
We also saw the return of the annual Junior CAPA evening last week and the CAPA Showcase Assembly. The assembly saw a diverse range of high quality performances and slide shows of student works. At the CAPA evening the students performed over 25 different acts in Music, Drama and Dance and were simply outstanding. The night also featured an excellent Visual Arts and Photography exhibition which included literally hundreds of works. It took many hours of rehearsal and preparation by both students and staff to enable the night to run. There were two full days of set up for the exhibition, sound and staging required for the night by the CAPA staff. I offer my sincere gratitude and admiration for all of the CAPA staff and their dedication and commitment to ensure that the students had this wonderful opportunity to share their work with family and friends.

JAG PRESENT STAFF TRAINING
During Week 8, Johnnies Action Group (JAG) ran an educational session for staff on our School Environmental Management Plan. The 1 hour session involved three workshops run by Miss Freshwater, Ms Swan and Mr Higgins.
The aim of the day was to engage staff with the environmental aspects of St John’s and all of the sustainability initiatives we have at school.
Miss Swan took teachers to the JAG Sustainable Garden and Worm Farms to demonstrate use of our composting system and being sustainable at St John's.
Mr Higgins took teachers to the bush to talk about using outdoor spaces around the school for learning.
Miss Freshwater led a workshop for teachers about being sustainable as individuals in their own lives where staff completed an ecological footprint calculator, looked at where their money is invested and investigated alternatives to single use plastic. We hope St John's staff left the workshops feeling more inspired to protect our planet Earth.
Thank you to our staff and the following student volunteers who assisted with our training; Grace Hartigan, Riley Mason, Georgina Hooke, Isabella Menzies, Bethany Fenech, Alexandra Leerson, Jasmine Barber, Kiki Macas and Ashley Fuller.
