EFFECTIVE LEARNING – STUDENT AND PARENT FOCUS
All schools spend time analysing the results of the HSC, NAPLAN, PAT and other external testing in order to review teaching practice and look for improvement. Both at St John’s and within the Diocese this is occurring. In recent weeks I have attended a number of Principal’s forums where we have discussed some significant questions.
- What does effective teaching and learning look like?
- What does effective, engaged learning look like?
- How do I know that effective teaching and learning is taking place in my school?
The result of this was to have a closer look at my role as the Principal of the school in ensuring quality education takes place. A further series of discussions led to questions being asked around the responsibilities of all that are involved, from the Principal to the Coordinators to all Teaching Staff - in the ownership of generating quality student learning results.
In Term 1 Mrs Murphy and Mrs Frew attended a conference looking at student engagement and it’s impact on learning outcomes. This was based on the work of Amy Berry.
As a result of this my thoughts have taken a turn, and I have been pondering the question of just what an effective learner looks like. In fact, I discussed this with a Year 10 class. I was astonished by their insights and answers. They clearly knew what an effective learner looked like – even if they were not one themselves. They discussed the qualities, attitudes, traits and skill development of these students. We then discussed how we could all move towards becoming better learners. We discussed what a successful HSC student looked like, what a successful Year 10 student looked like and why some students only ‘switched on’ when they entered senior school (Years 11 and 12). It was a wonderful discussion and one that I encourage you all to take up with your child.
So a further question goes out to ALL parents – what does an effective parent look like? When we see successful HSC or NAPLAN students we need to also look at the home life and support that these students receive. How do or can, parents support their child’s learning so that they may achieve at their best?
Many parents tell me that they used to be able to assist their child with homework but not any more as they move upwards through school towards Years 11 and 12. But what can you still do to support? Perhaps, at times we are too busy to find time to reflect upon these questions. But time will also pass quickly and if we do not address these questions now our children will be out of school and moving on with their lives.
Perhaps, if you are struggling for answers, you could also discuss this with your child. Ask them how you can help them to an improved end point.
These questions and their answers are not easy. But they are so worthwhile to ask. So, what sort of EFFECTIVE PARENT do you wish to be?
YEAR 9 CAMP
I had the pleasure of attending the Year 9 Camp last Thursday for a half day. I was keen to see how it operated and also the venues, which were new to me. It was wonderful to see that most of the students were having a great time.
Some were being challenged and pushed out of their comfort zones in the process. While a bit uncomfortable, these are the times and opportunity for real personal growth. I big thank you to all Staff who attended and gave time away from their families to allow this event to take place.
I wish all a wonderful fortnight ahead.

MILTON PARISH
Term 2 for year 7 has hit the ground running with a variety of activities.
Week 2 saw Year 7 students undertaking their very first Reflection Morning.
The theme for the morning was solidarity and year 7 explored how they can work together and make the world a better place. They partook in three different activity rotations each with a differentiating focus on the theme.
Students experienced an Aboriginal ritual where they touched the Earth, washed their hands in Water and walked through a Smoking Ceremony prior to participating in a Liturgy focussing on Earth, Water and Fire from Catholic and Aboriginal perspectives. Students also completed a "Let your light shine" creative arts activity. In this activity, students were asked to reflect on their gifts and talents, how they can help bring love to others. From there they made a paper lantern to symbolise the shining of their gifts and to connect back to our year group motto.
Lastly, students were also taught our School song "Pax Christi" in preparation for our Foundation Day celebrations and to create a further connection to our school community. I and the other teachers involved were so impressed with the way that our year 7’s engaged with the activities with reverence and excellent behaviour.
A big thank you to all involved in the creation, organisation and running of the activities.
7ENGM - BUSHTUCKER WALK WITH UNCLE ARCHIE
SCIENCE
In Science year 7 have been participating in a variety of experiments which have been interesting and exciting.
7SCIK - SEPARATING A MIXTURE WITH MR STEPHENSON
7SCII - THE TYNDALL EFFECT EXPERIMENT WITH MR PAINE
7SCIL - CRYSTALLISATION EXPERIMENT WITH DR ELTON
7SCIH - PURIFYING MUDDY WATER WITH DR ELTON
All year 7 students are getting ready for their very first Foundation Day on Friday 26th May with each PALS group preparing a stall for the fair. There was lots of lively discussion about what stalls they would like to run and I am looking forward to visiting the stalls and taking part in all the fun!
It has been wonderful welcoming back our year 7 students and we wish Ms Jennings all the best as she starts her maternity leave.
Year 7 Coordinator
This term the Catholic Social Teaching focus at St Johns is ‘Common Good’. The ‘Common Good' calls each one of us to, as best as possible, create the conditions in which every person and group can meet their needs so that they may reach their full potential - to be able to have life and live it to the full. This is demonstrated in the opportunities that are available at St Johns for students to engage in activities which support the St Johns community and help to provide a sense of belonging where every student is valued and everyone has the opportunity to meet their full potential.
The following students participated in the “Davinci Decathlon” - which is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students: Mylan Brunton, Charlie Byrne, Charlotte Hertzberg, Tiana Kochaniewicz, Kieran Kochaniewicz, Lilly Murphy, Johanna Pichler, Alex Sivonen, Kate Walker, Julian Knott, Eden Singleton, Aiden Spurway
Kate and Charlotte achieved 2nd place in Art and Poetry. Charlotte did an abstract artwork based on Kate's poem, both of them had to relate to the concept of Gordians Knot, an ancient Greek legend about finding sense in chaos!! What an amazing achievement and certainly great exercise for the mind!!
The rock band performed brilliantly at assembly and had the audience rocking and in awe of the maturity of their playing. They certainly have a big future ahead and we look forward to cheering them on at future performances. The band members are: Keira Sater, Emmieline Le, Ethan Luke, Oli Willson and Johanna Pichler
Our students also have the opportunity to immerse themselves in indigenous experiences at St Johns which the Year 8 students have embraced. The following boys participate in the Didgeridoo program at St Johns: Eli Gow, Jake Swan, Lachlan Church, Marshall Avery, Stirling Harcombe, David Roberts, Cody Chater, Bailey Newham, Chaise Wyber, Dom Climan, Ethan Ward, Flynn O'leary, Harrison Leavesley, Hayden Totten, Jackson Wellington, Jake Pierce, Jett Creary, Khai Sexton & Lochlan Hazlewood. Jackson Wellington is also a member of the Boys Koori Dance group.
I would like to thank the following students for giving up their time to help at the School Working Bee on Thursday 11 May, your school spirit is to be commended: Ethan Luke, Oli Wilson, Zac Mercier, Lachlan Molloy & Ashton Davis.
In the next two weeks St Johns will be holding two of the biggest community days we have each year - the School Athletics Carnival and Foundation Day. These days provide for students an opportunity to engage positively with the school community and have FUN and LIVE LIFE TO THE FULL!!! The carnival, enables students to participate with their peers in a relaxed fun environment and also allows students to challenge themselves competitively. Below are pictures of Year 8 practising their discus skills in preparation for the carnival (with Eadn Hall and Liam Crumpton helping by sharing their knowledge with their peers)
Friday 26th May will be Foundation Day, again, a fantastic opportunity for students to engage with one another in a positive way and contribute to the school community by assisting with their PALS groups stalls, visiting other stalls and taking part in the activities and enjoying the concert at the end of the day that celebrates the talented students and staff at St Johns! More importantly, funds raised on the day will be donated to St Vincent dePaul and Project Compassion to help those in need.
It is expected that students will attend these days as they are an important aspect of our school community and one of the reasons St Johns is such a special place to be. It is one way we help to support the Common Good and ensure we create the conditions in which every person and group can meet their needs so that they may reach their full potential!!
With “Strong minds and gracious hearts”

YEAR 11 ABORIGINAL STUDIES - DAMPER AND LILLY PILLY JAM
The year 11 Aboriginal Studies class has been looking at bread, both pre-invasion and post-invasion. Archaeological evidence shows Aboriginal people were the first bakers in the world. Cultivating, harvesting, grinding and baking a range of natural seeds from native millet, kangaroo grass and murnong (daisy yam). Post invasion, Aboriginal people living on missions, stations and reserves were given flour, sugar and tea as rations. Damper became a key staple. The class collected Lily Pily berries from trees around the school- this was made into jam which we enjoyed on handmade damper.
YEAR 11 AND 12 ABORIGINAL STUDIES UPCOMING EXCURSION
Year 11 students will join the year 12 Aboriginal Studies class later this term on the 29th May to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art and have an education experience at Barangaroo. This will be an amazing opportunity and will provide depth for the Heritage and Identity topics.
YEAR 10 COMMERCE - PROMOTING AND SELLINGThe year 10 Commerce class has just completed our unit on promoting and selling. Students submitted a portfolio of business documents including research on a business, a letter to the marketing manager of a business, a redesign of a shopfront and promotional material. Overall, the standard of portfolios was extremely high. We have some talented students who are developing skills to be our future leaders of business and enterprise. Well done!

YEAR 10 HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY- UPCOMING EXCURSIONS
Thursday June 15
Reminder, Year 10 will travel to the Jewish Museum for our site study related to the Holocaust. This excursion is invaluable and always highly regarded by our students.
Geography students will complete fieldwork at Bens Walk, including water quality testing, land and water management strategies and Aboriginal local knowledge.
Please action these excursions which are now on compass.
YEAR 9
Last term students learned about Sustainable Biomes and will go on an expedition to Minnamurra on Wednesday 7 of June to further deepen their understanding of rainforest biomes.
Please action this excursion which is now on compass.
Within this topic, students learned about sustainable food production. Students Charlize Kazangi and Jasmyn Eastcott of 9GEOM chose to investigate “insects” as a sustainable food source. Eating critters can help reduce some of the impacts associated with food production, such as exploitation and global warming. They made this fabulous presentation and menu to make the food sound appealing.
YEAR 8 GEOGRAPHY
8HGK
This term the 8K Geography students are creating maps using GIS software to calculate the percentage of tree cover in the school. The maps they produce will be entered into the "How Cool is your school?" competition where they have the chance to win a drone. As part of this task the students conducted fieldwork around the school looking at what types of shade cover we currently have and where it is located. They will also develop a solutions proposal where they will suggest improvements to make St John's even cooler.
8HGI AND 8HGM
Students from Year 8 Geography have been learning about water in the world. Students from 8HGI and 8HGM went on a fun adventure to Brown’s Creek to do some water testing.
They worked together to discuss their environmental observations and ways to overcome issues such as water pollution. Students had a great time learning on country.
8HGJ
8HGJ explored and produced some fantastic work around the water crisis facing the world. They were highly creative as they immersed themselves in the topic to develop their own NGO and relevant projects to assist countries currently dealing with a water crisis.

SOCCER GIRLS - JUNIOR
In the Diocese of Wollongong Girls Football Championship, the St John’s U13 team played fearlessly and confidently throughout the Championship proudly coming 3rd after just losing the semifinal to the eventual winners. The team had a number of goal scorers with all girls showing amazing skill and determination. The team played marvelous football throughout the tournament, with many players staring especially Lexy who was brilliant in goals.
SOCCER GIRLS - INTERMEDIATES
On the 31st of March a well trialled and poorly trained experienced footballers travelled across Hillcrest road by foot. The year 9 pathways team started their campaign against Corpus Christi and took a while to settle into the game. They scored early in the second half with a goal clinically slotted in by Hayley Short, unfortunately Corpus snuck in an equaliser late in the game resulting in a draw. A slow and disjointed game followed against St Joseph’s, which resulted in a nil all draw.
In a game with a bit more feeling St Johns maintained their cool and beat Mt Carmel 2-0 with a beautiful free kick from Hayley Short and a wonderful strike from makeshift right wing Bridie Glover. Taking an early lead in a game against Holy Spirit thanks to the aerial presence of Hailee Glover, disappointingly again we allowed an equaliser.
We finished equal first in the pool with two other teams. We were moved to equal second based on for and against, and finished third based on the number of goals scored which meant we missed the semi-finals. We comfortably accounted for St Benedict’s in our final game finishing in fifth place overall. The girls demonstrated great sportsmanship and respect for the officials and opponents on the day, a team to keep an eye on into the future.
OPEN BOYS SOCCER
The open boys soccer team exhibited their competitive spirit by participating in the Open Boys Soccer Championships held in Woonona on Monday 8 May in very cold and windy conditions. They played against several teams from the region, including John Therry Catholic College, Edmund Rice College, and Corpus Christi Catholic College. Although we did not secure any victories, the event was a great opportunity to showcase their teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship. Moreover, our students had the chance to build new connections within the diocesan community, which was an added bonus.

TRIVIA NIGHT
The game consisted of two rounds that included some fun questions and exciting throwbacks. We were able to have 10 teams join us on the night which created lots of friendly competition and some comical sabotage between Mr Coulson Knight and the Year 12's!!
The raffles were drawn with much anticipation and the donations of a Car Washing Kit, Google Nest Hub, Skincare Hamper, Flight Simulator and Book Pack were a hit.
A big thanks to Nowra Dymocks, Autobarn, Officeworks, Decadence, Jolly Olly's, Coles, Boeing Australia, Terry White Pharmacy Milton and South Coast Business and Financial Solutions and for their generous donations and support of the night.
The night was full of good energy and there were lots of laughs. With everyone's participation we were able to raise much needed funds for the Vinnies Appeal.
Thank you to all the teachers and students who helped organise this event!! Thank you so much to all who came and supported the Vinnies Appeal!
STUDENT REPORT
Trivia night was one to remember! On the 5th of May, the Vinnies Youth Group organised a trivia night for the St Johns community, The atmosphere was electrifying providing new opportunities for bragging rights. The night started off with some free entertainment from our MC Mr Eirth and lots of laughs with our amazing team. The questions were challenging but nothing we couldn't handle and it was an enjoyable way to end the week and raise some money for a good cause. “It was an adrenaline fuelled ride that left us exhilarated and hungry for more. Trivia truly brought our Friday night to life”
