Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff & Students
YEAR 12 2023
This week saw the end of formal schooling for our Year 12 group. The various Graduation events were dignified and memorable. This group of students has left a lasting and positive impression on the school. We hold high expectations that they will do themselves and St John’s proud in their exams.
I congratulate our student leaders for 2023 on their leadership and commitment to this year group.
YEAR 12 GRADUATION LITURGY & AWARD PRESENTATION
On Tuesday 19 September, St John's Graduation Liturgy & Award Presentation was held for our graduating Year 12 Class of 2023. The event included presentations of many major awards and special certificates to our exemplary young people. The night was a truly special occasion and a very proud moment for the students, their families, their teachers and St John's as a community. We would like to commend all of Year 12 on their outstanding achievements and wish them all the best for their upcoming HSC exams.
PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND
It was the habit of Bishop Peter to take a group of Staff to the Holy Land. In doing so he could lead them through the highlights of the Bible story and they could walk where Jesus and the disciples walked. Covid put an end to this activity.
Bishop Brian has, this year announced a commencement of this trip and St John’s has three Staff members attending. Mrs Chapman, Mrs Davoren and Mrs Chittick. We wish them well in their travels as they depart for this event of a lifetime.
FEAST OF ST MATTHEW - APOSTLE & EVANGELIST, 21 SEPTEMBER
Matthew the Apostle, also known as Saint Matthew was a 1st-century Galilean and one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. As a tax collector, Matthew would have been despised by his fellow Jews for collaborating with the Roman occupation.
After Matthew’s encounter with Jesus, he is profoundly changed and invites Jesus for a feast. On seeing this, the Scribes and the Pharisees criticised Jesus for eating with tax collectors and sinners. This prompted Jesus to answer, "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." St Matthew reminds us that even those who were considered to be the worst of people could be saved and were welcome to follow Jesus.
It is comforting that Jesus wants to spend time with ‘those of us who are less than perfect’. It is even more encouraging that Jesus actually “calls us” to share in his mission. Jesus knows everything about us (our good points and bad) and still wants and loves us. The challenge for us is to remain open and to allow the revelation of Jesus’s love to grow within us. This requires us to prioritise our relationship with him so that, like Matthew, we encounter Jesus in the realities of our own life.
Rembrandt’s painting depicts an elderly St Matthew who may be pondering the words of the Angel as he reflects on his encounter with Jesus. The pages of his book are crumpled which could indicate that the book may be a journal. Despite the fact that St Matthew appears old in this painting, there is a great energy and wisdom in Rembrant’s portrayal of Matthew which communicates a ‘sense of purpose’ or ‘mission’.
As we finish Week 10 of Term 3 and move toward the pupil vacation period, let’s think about how amazing it is that Jesus calls each of us to be part of his mission. You may be inspired by Rembrandt’s painting to commit to journaling as part of your spiritual practice. Let us ponder our gifts and remember that Jesus refers to us as ‘the light of the world’ (Matthew 5:14).

Silverdale Farm & Kembla Grange Racecourse - Equine Industry Tour
The Industry Exploration Tour held in early September, was an enriching experience for Year 9 and 10 students who had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of the equine industry. Participants were introduced to various job roles and career prospects within this dynamic field. Throughout the excursion, students had the chance to interact with industry experts who shared their insights and experiences.
The day began early as students ventured into the heart of the equine world—the stables. Here, they gained firsthand knowledge of the daily activities, facilities, and the diverse job roles that revolved around these magnificent horses. From stable hands to trainers, the equine industry boasted a multitude of career options.
A visit to NSW's premier racecourse opened students' eyes to the numerous job variations associated with horse racing. The excitement of the track, combined with administrative roles and event management, underscored the industry's vastness.
The opportunity to explored a breeding stud farm was a key highlight for the day. The serene surroundings, adorable foals, and the intricacies of horse breeding made for a memorable experience. This segment showcased the industry's commitment to animal welfare and growth.
Meeting industry experts offered valuable insights into career pathways. Students learned about the courses, traineeships, and opportunities that could pave their way to a successful career in the equine world.
A big thank you to Ms Hall for accompanying the students on this excursion!

Have a back-up plan: Pathways to Uni
UAC always recommends that, when you choose your course preferences, you include a 'back-up' course; that is, a course you are confident you'll be offered a place in and will be happy to study if you miss out on offers for your higher preferences. For example, you could include a diploma course in a similar area of study as your preferred degree course. You could then use your diploma studies as a stepping stone to the degree: you may even be able to move straight into second year. Pathways to uni.

UAC Career mapping: where to after school?
Many students are uncertain about their next steps after Year 12. But – as Phillip Williamson, Head Teacher Careers for the NSW Government’s Educational Pathways Program, writes – it’s vital to go easy on yourself, self-reflect and do your research. Here are Williamson’s practical tips for starting your career journey. The most important thing, he advises, is to focus on your direction, not your destination.
https://www.uac.edu.au/media-centre/news/career-mapping-where-to-after-school
What is the ATAR?
The ATAR is a rank, not a mark.
The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a number between 0.00 and 99.95 that indicates a student’s position relative to all the students in their age group (ie all 16 to 20 year olds in NSW). So, an ATAR of 80.00 means that you are 20 per cent from the top of your age group (not your Year 12 group).
Universities use the ATAR to help them select students for their courses and admission to most tertiary courses is based on your selection rank (your ATAR + any applicable adjustments). Most universities also use other criteria when selecting students (eg a personal statement, a questionnaire, a portfolio of work, an audition, an interview or a test).

Ms Marcia Arenas
Transition and Pathways Specialist
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the members of the Year group who received a leadership position for 2024. I know this team will represent and lead this school in a positive and respectful way.
I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge all members of the year group who nominated for a position. I know that all of Year 11 will take on the challenge Mr Marshall set them of all being leaders in this school.
We are heading into Year 12 senior retreat next term. The first major event as the Year group moves into the final Year of their time here at St John’s. A reminder that this event is compulsory for all students. If there are any issues with this please contact myself or the school office.
Finally Year 11 on Thursday received their 2024 Jersey. Students are allowed to wear these on Wednesdays and Fridays starting in term 4. A reminder that full summer uniform is to be worn under these. If students are in the wrong uniform or do not have the complete uniform they will be placed on withdrawal.
Year 11 Coordinator
It is difficult to grasp the prospect of Year 12 finishing high school. This week has been not only very emotional for many but also one of excitement and celebration. Having had a conversation with the students there is a feeling of mixed emotions. The apprehension of moving away from the security of the familiar life of school into an unknown future can be daunting for some. For others however, the thought of leaving school brings relief and eagerness.
It is important at this time to express my appreciation to the students for their support and expressions of gratitude to not only myself but to all their teachers and support staff. Monday was a terrific day where teachers & students enjoyed the Crazy Photo activity. All the students looked incredible in their many and varied costumes and clearly showed their appreciation and gratitude to the staff.
Breakfast on Tuesday was a special time where the students and staff had the opportunity to spend time together before they embarked on preparing for the graduation ceremonies. I noted in my speech on Wednesday that “it takes a community to raise a child” and I truly believe that the St John’s community has played an integral role in the educational, emotional and spiritual growth of each and every Year 12 student.
Thank you again to the parents and carers for your support over the past six years. I will be forever grateful for the way you have worked side by side with the school to ensure your children have the best possible outcome from their high school experience.

GROWING GOOD MEN FATHER AND SON WEEKEND
FATHER AND TEENAGE SON WEEKEND -20 TO 22 OCTOBER 2023 CATARACT SCOUT CAMP, APPIN
One of the most important influences in the lives of men is the relationship they had with their father or significant father figure. The encouragement and affirmation that this relationship could, and should , provide, is a key ingredient for how young men view themselves and embrace their gifts as they take their place in the world. Don't miss this life-changing father and son weekend! Spots are limited to just 25 fathers with sons aged between 12 and 16 years.
This a unique opportunity for dads and their sons to embark on a quest of discovery with Robert Falzon and the team from menALIVE.
