Dear Parents/guardians,
I write this final Newsletter article of 2023 and am amazed at just how quickly this year has gone by. My first at St John’s.
I am proud to say that the students are achieving good results and have an increased belief in themselves that makes me very proud. St John’s students are as good as any in the state, they just have to believe in that and work hard to achieve it, just as others are working hard around the state. Engagement in the classroom and student behaviour has also improved and is evidenced in our data.
We look to 2024 with two school goals :-
1. Improved student learning outcomes
2. Reviewing our catholicity, charism and foundations.
These will be the focus of the Staff professional development and collegial learning for 2024.
LEADERS RETREAT
Bishop Brian invited our School Captains and Vice Captains to attend the inaugural Year 12 Student Leaders’ annual retreat. The focus of the retreat was Bearing Christ’s Love through your Leadership. Jaimi, Hugh, Bridget and Jett enjoyed the experience and especially enjoyed meeting the other captains from the Wollongong diocese.
PRESENTATION AWARDS ASSEMBLY
On Thursday 14 December, St John's 2023 Presentation Awards Assembly was held for 7 - 10 in the school hall. The whole school is to be commended on how they conducted themselves in the extremely hot conditions.
Congratulations to all of the students that received awards, both major awards and faculty awards. It was terrific to see so many of our students receiving awards. We would like to thank all of the parents, carers and family members that attended the assembly to see their child recognised for their hard work and dedication.
SPECIAL AWARDS
Congratulations to our Special Award recipients that also received their awards at the 2023 Presentation Award Assembly. These students are to be commended on for their outstanding achievements.
HSC RESULTS - CLASS OF 2023
STAFF LEAVING ST JOHN'S
As we finish the school year, I also acknowledge the wonderful Staff who will be leaving the school and are moving (or have moved) to new schools or retiring. Their contribution has been greatly appreciated.
Our fulltime teaching who are leaving are :- Mrs Kinna, Mr Leishman, Mrs Fox, Mrs Castles, Mrs Whitehouse, Mrs Hodges and Mrs Sureau. I wish to thank all of these Staff for the dedication and commitment that they have shown to ensuring that your child has a quality education. They will be missed, but as in any school their replacements will be equally as dedicated.
I would like to thank very sincerely the members of the P&F for their work and support this year. These parents care greatly for their children’s education and for St John’s in general. Their advice and counsel had been so important to some of our major decisions. I trust this will continue next year and welcome all parents to consider attending the meetings. One per Term with lots of advertised warning.
I thank all of our sports and debating coaches for their extra investment of time for their teams. We had another successful year with many student excelling and gaining representative honours. An outstanding effort from our students. The co-curricula offerings at St John’s are enormous and the musicals, plays and drama events allow those involved to blossom. I also thank our staff who generously offer to support students on overnight events such as Bushcraft. That doesn’t happen in all schools.
Finally, I thank all of the parents that I have met over the last year. Educating a child is a partnership between the home and the school. You have made a choice to give your child the best chance to have a fulfilling and meaningful adult life. Thank you.
ADVENT
The candle lit at Church last Sunday, the second Sunday of Advent, was the peace candle. John Lennon became a strong activist for peace in the latter part of his life and his song ‘Imagine’ became a peace anthem the world over. It has been recorded in numerous languages and the focus is not only on peace, but also on reflecting on the difference that you have made to make the world a better place. I ask the students to reflect upon this. How have they improved another’s life this year? Been a difference? A support?
I wish all a wonderful Christmas break filled with happiness, family, friends and joy. Elsewhere in this Newsletter will be the mass times for the local Parishes. I encourage all to attend in this special time in the Church’s calendar.
God bless
Mr Wayne Marshall

Year 10 Work Experience 2024
What a week!
150 Year 10 participants
161 host employers
100% positive feedback from host employers
"Best work experience student we've had through the joint in a long time" Kennedy’s Auto Repairs
“Amazing, best student they have ever had, dressed superbly, asked lots of questions, very polite” Ms Kelly’s feedback from Basham Physiotherapy
“...fitting into the company's program very well and has been an assett all week.” Horses for Healing
“Very pleased with Noah's respectful attitude and effort. He was on time and ready to work each day. Fitting out a house, lots of observing. Pre fit-out - cutting out gyprock and assisting with tap connections.” Matthew Burke Electrical
“We see a lot of young people moving through our organisation, there is general lack of interest and motivation towards work. It was a pleasure to have [student] with us as he demonstrated that there is the opposite!. [Student] was very keen to listen and learn, the supervisors that he worked with were also very happy with him.” CASA Systems
“Everything is awesome with [student]. [Owner} says she is going fantastic and that she is very helpful!” Wellbeing Health Movement
“[Student] was exceptional. He was keen to undertake tasks that were set for him with enthusiasm. He often asked if he could assist on other tasks once he was finished with his allocated tasks, instead of waiting for us to provide more. He dressed appropriately for Court and participated in conferences with ease. [Student] was efficient when completing conference notes and court outcomes. [Student] was able to work without having constant supervision such that he was able to compile a brief to provide to counsel without having to be monitored through the entire process. Once completed, the task was done properly and in accordance with standard procedures. It was impressive for his first time.” Velasquez Legal
Students deserve a huge congratulations on representing the SJE community in such a positive light. Additionally, it's worth noting that some students may have secured casual work over the Summer break, showcasing their proactive approach. Meanwhile, others are eagerly anticipating potential apprenticeship opportunities that may come to fruition in 2024/2025.
We're proud of the diverse aspirations and accomplishments within our student body and look forward to supporting their continued success in 2024.
Navy Aviation Prospect Scheme (NAPS)
Attending the 2024 NAPS end-of-year presentation on Thursday, December 7 was an incredibly rewarding experience for Ms. Lawrence, parents, and myself, instilling a profound sense of pride as we witnessed the students' remarkable overall achievements.
Notably, Zach Tolhurst-Moon, Bill Shadforth, Max Royals, and Alex Duncan actively participated in every stage of the NAPS program, culminating in the final stage, LongLook. Throughout the past three terms, each student consistently showcased unwavering commitment, a strong sense of pride, and remarkable resilience in tackling the challenges presented to them over the last 10 weeks. It is evident that their immersion in this unique Navy program has equipped them with extensive knowledge about potential careers in defence and provided valuable insights on how to pursue and achieve these goals should they decide to follow this pathway
Congratulations to all of you!

We also got to weigh goats and water the gardens with seasol that we measured ourselves. We were able to work collaboratively with people we might not usually work with and learn new things. Most people participated and made the most of it. It was a day that was well spent learning and doing things we would not normally do."

SOCIAL GAMES
Year 9 were offered the opportunity to play in a modified European Handball tournament at school across 2 days in weeks 9 and 10. It was a fantastic atmosphere in the gym while matches were played in very hot and humid conditions. The idea of these events is to allow the year group to come together in a relaxed, fun and sporty way and this was achieved.
The winning was comprised of the following students:
Mathilda Lobina, Katie Martin, Anya Ellerington, Jack Fernie, Charles Holden, Viktor Creighton & Blayne Rumble'Inspire not to have more but to be more.'

Year 9 Coordinator
What a busy few weeks Year 10 have had. In Week 9 students participated in Work experience. I had the pleasure of visiting some students at their workplaces. It was amazing to see the positive way all students engaged in the experience and the positive feedback from all employers.
In Week 8 students engaged with our Reflection morning, where students were asked to focus on social justice and thinking about those that are less fortunate than ourselves. They participated in both passive and movement activities as a way of opening the students eyes to some of the injustices in the world.
Students have this week been participating in Transition Week. Moving from Year 10 to 11 is one of the biggest steps academically that students will make. Thanks to all the students who engaged in Transition week and congratulations for all of our year 10 special awards.
That wraps up a great year for year 10. Congratulations on everyone who has achieved success and we will look to build on our achievements next year.

Term 4 in the CAPA Faculty has been an extremely busy one with showcase assemblies, Junior Creative Arts evenings and of course our EAT Theatre production. I would like to thank all of the CAPA staff for all of the incredible hard work they have put in to provide as many opportunities as possible for our students to shine. The set up for music with the instruments, sound system, rehearsals and sound checks requires an enormous effort by our wonderful Music staff Mr Christie, Ms Simis and Mr Malady. The Visual Arts exhibition on the junior Creative Arts evening required almost 400 individual pieces to be moved to the hall and then displayed. A huge effort by our amazing Visual Arts staff Ms Smiriglia, Ms Lambert, Ms Hayes and Ms Shirlaw. Finally thank you to all of the students who not only helped in the set for the assembly and evening but performed so magnificently as well. Thanks to all of our student creative artists for your dedication, hard work, persistence and courage to express yourself and simply be authentically you. You make all of our CAPA staff immensely proud of what you have achieved this year, thank you.
EAT Theatre 2023 Production 3 O’CLOCK FLAGPOLE
This year’s production of 3 O’clock Flagpole was an outstanding production. It explored the impact of bullying in schools and how we can unite and overcome the scourge that is bullying. It was a play that was both humorous and at times, challenging in its content. The lives and stories of each of the characters were played beautifully on stage by the year ten and eleven drama students. In fact, the entire production was created by the Year 10 Drama class with students designing set, costumes and props as well as playing a number of roles and Year 11 students operating sound and lighting for each of the performances. Year 9 students with the incredible assistance of Ms Rachael McKay ran the backstage and scene changes. Ms McKay was in fact the production manager and did an amazing job organising publicity, programs, backstage and a hundred other jobs. A big thank you to Ms Rachael McKay and thanks to all of the staff who helped out on each of the 3 performance evenings. Huge congratulations to the Year Eleven and Ten (EAT) students whose standard of performance was simply extraordinary and a wonderful way to finish the year.

Year 11: The Journey to Year 12 HSC Body of Work
As students progress into Year 12, the spotlight is on refining their skills and developing a cohesive artistic identity. The groundwork laid in previous years culminates in the preparation for the Higher School Certificate (HSC) body of work. This pivotal year involves extensive exploration of themes, mediums, and techniques, setting the stage for the culminating exhibition in 2024.
The art education journey at our school is a progressive and enriching experience that empowers students to explore, create, and express themselves. From the early stages of clay exploration to the culmination of the HSC body of work, each year level contributes to the holistic development of our young artists, nurturing a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
