SJE STAFF ACKNOWLEDGED WITH DIOCESAN AWARDS
On Friday 22 November the Lighting the Way Faith and Learning Recognition awards for staff of the Catholic Education Office were held.These awards recognised a number of staff for their Length of service in Catholic education. Two staff were also acknowledged for their contribution and commitment including;
Mrs Kylie Chapman was nominated for the ‘School Support Officer Award’ for the work she has done over such a long period in providing support measures for students in Learning Support and Special Support. She is also the parent representative on the Diocesan Schools Council. Kylie manages the allocation of support staff and ensures that all areas are covered with the appropriate support. This includes the placement of support staff and management of special provisions for students needed specialist support for assessment tasks. Kylie supports students who access the Focus Zone for time out and ensures that the appropriate supports are in place. Her outstanding skills are delivered in a kind and caring manner that enables students to engage positively with this support.Kylie was a worthy recipient of this award and was acknowledged as exemplary in her work.
Miss Savannah Lloyd was nominated for the ‘Early Career Teacher Award’. Savannah is a competent HSIE teacher who works to ensure that the students in her class achieve their potential. She is reflective in her practice and actively seeks to improve her teaching through engaging in professional development.
Savannah has worked tirelessly to provide students with the opportunity to engage in dance and develop and showcase their skills. She has given her time generously to conduct dance training before school, during lunch and after school. She has also provided training during school holidays. Students have engaged in liturgical dance and many competitions including the Wakakirri in which they were the successful winners of the Shoalhaven in 2019. Savannah was also selected as the Australian dance teacher of the year.Savannah was the Diocesan recipient of this award.ST JOHN'S PARENT SURVEY

CREATIVE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
As we approach the end of the year, it is fabulous to see our teaching staff continue to engage students in learning, developing opportunties for students to collaborate and share ideas and challenge themselves.
Year 7 students were engaged in their maths lesson this week, participating in a fun Christmas themed relay race solving problems such as;

FINANCE OFFICE CLOSURE

CALEB COOK: Mountain Bike National MTB festival, Thredbo
SAM COLGATE: Rugby League Illawarra Steelers NRL U/16's squad
KIRRA DALE: Kirra Dale is one of two U17 females selected in the NSW State team to compete at the Australian Lifesaving Championships in Perth in January. She is also a 2019 Lonestar Scholarship holder with the IAS.
Other news is that we have had an enriching time being a part of helping the new Year 7 cohort for 2020 transition to high school. Approximately 50 Year 9 students were trained as Peer Support Leaders to play this important role.
Year 9 Bushcraft have been going on lots of fabulous excursions testing their new canoeing skills.
We have also been very involved in helping prepare for our Indonesian food day. Thanks to all the volunteers who have helped make this day a highlight of our year.
YEAR 9 SPELL OFF
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Year 9 families a very happy end of year and thank you for supporting me over the last three years. It has been such a privilege being a Year Coordinator and I will certainly miss this job very much. I will be studying next year at UOW completing my Masters of Education. Merry Christmas and I hope 2020 is a spectacular year for you all!

AWARDS CEREMONY
Well done to Year 10 who maintained an excellent sense of occasion throughout the awards ceremony on Wednesday 4 December. This is a first for a Year 10 cohort to receive their reports and awards recognising the range of achievements across the year, which will also be the case at the end of Years 11 and 12. Students received awards across a range of areas, specifically: individual faculty - subject based awards, Principal’s Report Awards and Year Coordinator’s Awards for contribution to the school community, exemplary Scholastic Attendance: Awarded to those students who have demonstrated commitment to their learning through exemplary attendance and Leadership Initiative awards,
The following students received awards recognising those who have contributed to the school and wider community in an exceptional way. The nominations for these awards were supported by the evidence collected from the student’s senior passports, in which they have documented their contributions.
OP SHOP BALL
Well done to all involved in the Op Shop Ball for Year 10 2019, there was a range of amazing outfits that really entertained and surprised on the day.
A gold coin donation offered by students at the door has been donated to the St Vincent’s Bushfire Appeal. There were a range of awards given out on the day!
ANNUAL YEAR 10 PEACE DAY
On Friday 29 November Year 10 were involved in our annual Peace Day. Guest speakers from ISRA (Islamic Science and Research Academy of Australia) spoke with the students and ran activities promoting peace, understanding, cultural awareness and interfaith dialogue. Students from Amity College were warmly greeted by Year 10 and new friendships were made.
An important aspect of the day in building relationships that are peaceful and just was in the sharing of a traditional meal. The students, staff and guests enjoyed a communal BBQ with chicken skewers, tabouli, hummus and flatbread. Peace Day is a great opportunity for the students to embrace and act on our school motto Pax Christi, the Peace of Christ.
Just a reminder that Year 10 finish their 2019 schooling after Work Experience on Friday 13 December.

JUNIOR CREATIVE ARTS EVENING
CAPA would like to congratulate our students for the incredible variety of talent showcased on the evening of Tuesday 26 November. Students shone in their technical ability displayed in art works as well as their confidence and performance prowess demonstrated throughout their performances in Music and Drama.

DRAMA
Recently Year 12 Drama students Johanna Renwick, Piper Ryan and Olivia Hodgkins auditioned for the John Bell Shakespeare Regional Scholarship. Each of the girls performed beautifully however special congratulations goes to Olivia Hodgkins who, after nearly 200 auditions held across Australia, was one of only twenty students shortlisted for the scholarship. Olivia now has to video her audition piece and send it to Bell Shakespeare for consideration. An amazing achievement Olivia, congratulations!
EAT THEATRE PERFORMANCE OF ANGELA BETZIEN'S 'THE GIRL WHO CRIED WOLF'
Our EAT Theatre performances of Angela Betzien's 'The Girl who cried Wolf' have been thoroughly enjoyed. Both last night and tonight's shows have sold out however limited tickets are available at the door for tomorrow's performance, Saturday 7 December. ($10 adult. $6 concession).

TRADESWOMEN WORKSHOP DAY
Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen (SALT) ran a workshop at St John’s on Monday 2 December for girls in Years 8 - 10. The workshop was run by 5 experienced tradeswomen who were inspiring as they shared their career journeys with the group.
During the workshop the girls learnt how to use 11 different tools and then applied these tool skills to make a timber caddy to take home. All students in this workshop loved the practical aspect of the workshop and have certainly gained skills they will be able to use for the rest of their lives.
TAFE NOWRA
Infofest is happening on the week beginning 9 December. See attached “Infofest flyer” with the dates, times and building locations for the course information sessions at Nowra.
AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY (ANU)
There are four advisory days being held in Sydney, Canberra, Orange and Wagga Wagga during mid December. Students can register online via the ANU Events page.

LIBRARY DISPLAY
Thank you to our Child Studies students for their fabulous and colourful creations of various childrens' toys using recycled products, proudly displayed in our library foyer this week!
LIBRARY LEARNING SPACE
Our 2020 HSC students are taking the opportunity to use space available at lunchtimes in the library for their learning.
This collaborative space is available for students to book during lunchtime and after school.
The upstairs area is used for quiet study at lunchtime.
RETURN OF ALL RESOURCES
All resources for students in Years 7 - 10 are due for return to the school library now for the end of the school year. We ask families to please ensure these are returned in readiness for the new school year. If there are any queries about resources please contact the library. WELCOME TO OUR 2020 YEAR 7 STUDENTS
On Wednesday 27 November, we held our 'Getting to know you' event to welcome our incoming 2020 Aboriginal students. It was a lovely afternoon spending time with our new students and families.
YEAR 12 2020 ABORIGINAL STUDIES
Year 12 Aboriginal Studies students Kira Trethewey, Caitlin Sultana and Emma Zuzic visited Bomaderry Childrens’ Homes on Friday 29 November. They were very privileged to speak with Uncle Willy. We thank Uncle Willy for his time and sharing his knowledge with us.
In the last few weeks both Construction and Hospitality classes have been busy gaining real life learning experiences.
CONSTRUCTION
- Construction spent the day paving the Cockatoo Garden at St Michaels in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander area of the school. Thankyou to Mr Chris Hall and Mr Peter Redman for organising and leading this learning experience.
- Yesterday Mr Phil Gould’s Construction class constructed a concrete path from K-Block to the chapel area.
HOSPITALITY
- Hospitality students catered for the staff morning tea last week and staff were very appreciative of the variety and quality of savoury and sweet foods provided.
- Congratulations to Abby Drinkwalter and Madisson Powick who competed in the Worldskills Commercial Cookery Competition last week. They were responsible for preparing and cooking a 3 course meal for 4 people to industry standards and timeframes.

WORLD SCHOOL SEVEN’S RUGBY REP
Congratulations to Year 11 student Aroha Spillane on her selection in the Central Coast Seahawks Under 18’s Rugby team to tour New Zealand and play in the World School 7’s Rugby Union tournament on 13-14 December. Aroha will enjoy the experience of playing teams from the Netherlands, Tonga and Canada on the first day of the event which is being live streamed and shown on New Zealand National TV. We wish you the best of luck Aroha!
LOIS CONTINUES TO EXCEL IN EQUESTRIAN
Year 8 student Lois Fleming continues to excel in the sport of Equestrian, competing in the Sydney Show Jumping Championships on the weekend achieving;
2nd - 90cm Thoroughbred Class 1st - 1-1.05 Thoroughbred Class
Congratulations Lois! At the time of collating our newsletter, Lois was also competing in the Summer Classic at Sydney International Equestrian Centre and we look forward to hearing of her results.
SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM NEWS - First Holy Communion
On Sunday 24 November, on the Feast of Christ the King, four Year 7 students: Kade Lennox, Lilly Kowalczyk, Victoria Sargeant and Emma-Louise Sultana received their First Communion with approximately 80 other candidates from the Shoalhaven. The mass was held in the St Michael’s Parish hall and was concelebrated by Fr Pat and Fr Leo. The celebration was well attended by family and friends.

St John's Annual General Meeting (AGM) for next year has already hit the calendar and is scheduled for Monday 17 February 2020, all are welcome to attend. There will be more information in the final newsletter for 2019 regarding the roles and positions available on the St John’s P&F committee. Save the date, we hope to see you there.

MACBETH IS COMING TO JERVIS BAY MARITIME MUSEUM - FRIDAY 17/01/20Under the setting sun by the pond, in the grounds of the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum, the players from Essential Theatre will take you on the thrilling and dark journey that is Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
Bring a picnic rug or picnic chair and gather your friends and family for this dramatic outdoor treat that is the prototype for Game of Thrones and Black Mirror in political ambition, deceit, ferocious battles, supernatural horrors and vivid characters.
Doors open at 6pm: the performance starts at 7pm. There is a 20 minute interval; the performance finishes at 10pm.
If it rains, you will be notified of the change of venue.
