In the busyness of our lives it is important to stop at times and contemplate our personal and spiritual journey. We are now moving into the liturgical season of Lent which is a time of contemplation and renewal. Lent is a time of spiritual growth. During Lent we Pray, Fast and Give alms. Giving up something for Lent fosters self-discipline and assists us to tune into our needs and wants and to come to understand the difference. It turns our minds to our God-given blessings and our responsibility to be mindful and active to help those less fortunate than ourselves.
Whilst it’s great to give something up for Lent we should also think about the possibility of doing something positive to bolster your spiritual life and make the world a better place. Look for ways that you can strengthen your spiritual life or perform special acts of mercy and kindness at home, at work or in your community.
At St John’s there are many social justice initiatives that offer students the opportunity to be informed and active citizens. It is exciting to see the many activities that they organise and how deeply informed they are in their ability to link the action with the goal to build a deeper understanding of those less fortunate. All students are welcome and encouraged to join any of these groups and contribute to the activities they plan.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
It has been wonderful to see so many parents visiting the school over the last 2 weeks, with outstanding engagement at the Year 10 and 11 information evening and the Year 12 parent teacher interviews.
There has also been a great response for support with the swimming carnival and it's fabulous to see new faces at the canteen.
We wish to thank our Parent and Friends Committee for their continued guidance and input and to our P & F Executives Corey Carter, John Barack, Jacinta Davies, Monica Oke and Janet Gill who have led the Parents and Friends Association throughout 2019. We encourage all parents/carers to attend our P & F meetings including our P & F AGM on Monday 2 March, 2020.
This Saturday we have our school Working Bee and I am looking forward to meeting more parents, carers and friends. This engagement enables you to connect with our community and we do love getting to know our families and have you with us at the school. If you would like to be placed on the parent/carer volunteer list please contact our school office.
OPEN NIGHT
The 0pen Night will be held in Week 6 this year. This is always a wonderful night in which the school showcases the opportunities available to those who are considering enrolment in future. If you know anyone who may be interested in enrolment please encourage them to join us for this evening.

Principal
SAFE TRAVELS
There are several concerns about the collection of students from school in the afternoon. Please observe the following guidelines to ensure the safety of all our students.
- It is a 40km/h zone from 2.30 - 4.00pm and Police may monitor this expectation at any time
- Year 12 students should depart their parking spot in a safe manner - always aware of the safety of those students and members of the public around them.
- The student pick up zone has a 2 minute waiting limit. It will only operate in the morning before school. Students will not be able to be collected from the pick up zone in the afternoon from Monday 24 February. A bollard will block entry to the drop off zone from 8.30 onwards.
- Students CANNOT enter a car on the roadside.
- Parents are asked to not park in the carpark across from the bus bay. Students are not to walk across the road to that carpark as it is a designated bus route and not safe for pedestrians.
These guidelines are in place to ensure the safety of all students and their families. We suggest for parents to stagger the pick up to after 3.05pm onwards when cars begin to clear from the netball courts. There is a staff member on crossing duty who ensures that all students cross to the netball courts safely.
We have a well organised system to get students onto buses safely and if parents park around the corner from the school, it is only a minute's walk for the students and they can get in the car safely. Students who are in walking distance from the school are encouraged to do so to assist in the reduction of traffic. If you have any concerns about transport arrangements, please do not hesitate to contact me through the office.

UNIFORM
Thank you to the majority of girls who are wearing their sports shorts correctly. We have asked Lowes to assist you when purchasing the shorts to get the correct sizing. Should any girl not wear the shorts appropriately they will be off the playground or asked to purchase new shorts if necessary.
Have a great week!
Mrs. Leonie Pearce
ATTENDANCE
As part of our care and support for all students at SJE, we conduct regular attendance checks, make wellbeing calls home and arrange support meetings for parents/carers and students to explore relevant and effective strategies in maintaining the regular attendance for all students. While this happens regularly throughout the year, we run a whole school overview in Weeks 4 and 9 of each term.
As such, I would like to remind parents/carers and students of the Catholic Education Office, Dioceses of Wollongong’s (CEDoW) Attendance Policy and our role in supporting the regular attendance of your son, daughter or person in your care. A policy that is also mandated by NSW Law.
In order to do this, CEDoW and SJE have identified five main areas where, by law, we will need to contact parents in regard to concerns around attendance. These include:
- Step 1: When attendance falls below 90% (explained or unexplained)
- Student meeting and Step 1 letter sent home outlining the concern
- Step 2: When attendance falls below 85% (explained or unexplained)
- Student interviewed by Year Coordinator, parents/carers contact by phone to discuss possible supports and Step 2 letter sent home.
- Step 3: When attendance remains below 85% (explained or unexplained)
- Student and Parents interviewed by Pastoral Care Coordinator, where needed,a learning plan is developed to assist parent/carer and student in improving attendance, CEDoW informed. Registered Step 3 letter sent home.
- Step 4: When attendance continues to remain below 85% (explained or unexplained)
- Student and Parent/Carer meets with Pastoral Care Coordinator, Assistant Principal and/or Principal and registered Step 4 letter sent home. CEDoW will advise on further actions.
- Step 5: Above 30 days (notionally)
- By law, SJE will report the concerns to Family and Community Services (FaCS) and Parents/Carers will receive a registered letter from CEDoW. If not enrolled, CEDoW will notify FaCS and NSW Department of Education.
While we do understand there may be illness or family circumstances that, at times, will impact a student’s attendance, we are still required by law to make contact with parents/carers at each identified step. These steps also align with student punctuality and/or early leave. The only exception is when family’s lodge a form to the Principal asking for exemption.
Parents and carers of senior students must also understand that attendance and/or punctuality concerns could impact on a student’s ability to successfully meet his/her course outcomes. This, in turn, may result in N-Warning(s) which may adversely affect their RoSA and/or HSC.
If you believe there are concerns surrounding the attendance of your child or the person in your care, please do not hesitate to contact their Year Coordinator as soon as possible to arrange a support meeting.
If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me on the school number.
AEROSOL DEODORANTS
All aerosol deodorant cans are STRICTLY PROHIBITED at SJE. The use of these can trigger severe reactions from others students, especially those who suffer from asthma.
Students ARE PERMITTED to use roll on deodorants when engaging with physical activity and hot days. Any student who is found using aerosol cans at SJE are placing the safety of others at risk and will receive appropriate consequences.
Mr. James Eirth
Pastoral Care Coordinator
YEAR 10 - 12 RoSA
Absence/Illness/Misadventure Absence/Non Completion Due to Illness or MisadventureIf a student is absent on the day a common task is due or an examination is to be held, the student must make sure that the office is notified by 8.30am by a parent / caregiver clearly on or before the due date.
The student must complete an Application for Illness/Misadventure Form on their return. Students must have ALL sections of the Application for Illness/Misadventure Form completed before it will be considered by the Assessment Committee.
The student must fill out Section 1 indicating why they are applying for Illness/Misadventure and how it has affected their ability to complete a task. A parent/guardian must sign the form. The student must get their class teacher to complete and sign Section 2. An independent authority must complete Section 3. Documentation must be provided.
Holidays, routine medical or dental appointments, driving test, part-time work, sporting commitments, long term illness, broken limbs (if it did not occur on the day) etc are examples of grounds likely to be unsuccessful when applying for illness/misadventure.
Technical problems concerning computers or printers or internet access will not be considered to be an acceptable form of misadventure for the late submission of an Assessment Task.

Welcome back for 2020! We have a busy year ahead and students have started the year in a positive way. Year 9 sees lots of changes with subjects and classes. While there has been some minor teething problems with these changes there is a good vibe across the year group as they start their elective courses in a range of subject areas.
There have been a few issues regarding uniform across the Year 9 group needing to be addressed. The problem areas are mainly around girls’ skirt length, jewellery and piercings as well as students not wearing plain white socks. All students must wear plain white socks if they do not yet have the SJE socks, this means any student wearing socks with logos or stripes will receive consequences as per school guidelines. The uniform expectations and requirements are clearly outlined in the student diary.
Congratulations to Bradley Church, selected in the Under 15's Illawarra Rugby Union representative side and will compete in the NSW Country Championships in Armidale during May and the NSW State Championships in Concord during June. We wish Bradley luck in these competitions.
Year 9 will be working hard to develop their involvement in the community through volunteering and community service.
I encourage students and their families to attend the Working Bee tomorrow Saturday 22 February as an opportunity to start their positive community involvement.
I would like to welcome the following teachers to the Year 9 team and look forward to working with them: Mr Kyriacou, Mr Jakymszyn, Ms Semmens, Mrs Prayetno and Mr Higgins.
I am looking forward to the year ahead and continuing to work with the students in Year 9 as they grow both in their education endeavours and personally as young adults.
“God has no hands but yours”
Mrs. Lynette Kelly
Year 9 Coordinator
Thank you to all parents, carers and students who attended the Information Evening on Monday 17 February. The feedback regarding the evening has been positive and we appreciate the enthusiasm and commitment shown by our cohort of parents and carers. A reminder from the evening to start thinking about possible career paths and potential work experience as we start to move towards the final few years of schooling.
Some important dates coming up for Term 1 2020:
- Open Night for future students: Wednesday 4 March; Year 10 helpers needed - Great first entry for the Passport!
- Cross Country: Monday 23 March (Week 9)
- NRMA: Live Learn Drive - Monday 30 March (Week 10, TBC)
- Parent Teacher Interviews: Evening: Wednesday 8 April, Day: Thursday 9 April (Week 11)
- Subject Selection Information Night: Term 2 Week 8
It’s been great to see such a positive start from the majority of students in Year 10. The year ahead is filled with a number of amazing opportunities for the cohort to be involved in. Students can participate in the musical, represent the school in a variety of sports and battle it out for vital house points at our school carnivals!
I look forward to this year's group letting their light shine as we “walk in the way of the good and the just”.
Year 10 student Abbey Teall has been just one of our students leading by example.
Well done Abbey! You're an inspiration to your peers.
Any issues that arise of a pastoral nature please contact your child's class teacher, PALS teacher or Year Coordinator.

NEWS FROM THE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT
With the start of 2020 already underway, St John’s Maths staff are excited at the opportunities available to our students to really excel in their Mathematics.
It is so exciting that Years 7 and 8 will again follow a learning program (Maths Pathway) which
- is tailored to the individual needs of each student allowing each student to work at their own level.
- focuses on the growth of the individual student and not their peers
- gives regular fortnightly feedback to parents.
There have been several myths circulated about Maths Pathway. Here are two that continue to circulate.
Myth 1: Students are always on their computers.
The reality: Students do use their computers to access their individualised work (as do students in most other Maths classes) and complete questions in their workbooks so all working out and results are clearly visible for discussion with their teachers and peers. Homework is also completed in workbooks. However, for approximately 30% of class time students are doing Challenging or Rich Activities where they work collaboratively to solve problems and pose questions that lead to solutions.
Myth 2: The teacher’s don’t teach. They just sit at their desks.
The reality: Teachers have access to data that allows them to target specific skills with specific groups of students. They plan and implement a number of mini lessons for each lesson to help individuals with their own misunderstandings and mathematical struggles. As in all subjects, teachers first teach the students how to problem solve and be responsible for their own learning by empowering them to use various resources. If the students still require support then the teacher is always available.
Last year I put together a short video introducing parents to this program. Please view the video using this link.
Click here to view St John's video introducing Year 7 & 8 Maths
The 2018 data shown in the video was closely replicated in 2019. Additional information can be found at the Maths Pathway website. https://mathspathway.com/
The Maths Staff and school are seeing many benefits to the program including;
- Every Maths Pathway group has seen stronger student growth in NAPLAN tests from Year 7 to Year 9.
- Year 10 students now do a HSC National Minimum Standards test in Numeracy. Last year was the first Year 10 group through who had come through Maths Pathways. There was approximately a 90% reduction in the number of students who did not meet HSC National Minimum Standards.
These results support the positive growth we are seeing in the classroom.
HOMESTUDY
As students have access to their own learning program they have homework to undertake each day. It is advised that students complete at least 15 minutes of maths homework every evening. Any issues that arise should be discussed with the teacher the next day. If you are unsure about the nature of this please speak with your child’s Maths teacher.
There will be several other opportunities for students to further explore the wonders and joys of Mathematics. Look out for invitations to join the Maths Olympiad team (Years 7, 8, 9 and 10), ICAS Maths Competition (all years) and Maths in Surveying excursion (10MT.1 or 10MT.2).
FREE MATHS TUITION FOR ST JOHN’S STUDENTS
Parents often enquire about extra assistance for their child. The Maths staff very generously offer their time every Thursday afternoon in B-block until 4pm. Students come along and complete homework or study with teachers readily available to help. This is always spoken of by departing Year 12 students as being of real benefit to their studies. SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM - REMINDER
Thank you to the parents and carers who have already responded to the initial notification that was in last week’s first newsletter for the year regarding the offering of the preparation for the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation(Confession), Eucharist (First Holy Communion) and Confirmation.
Formal preparation for the Sacraments will commence next week. If you have not responded or may have forgotten to return the reply note, please click here to download a copy.
I look forward to meeting the new candidates in preparation for the Sacraments next week.

DEFENCE WORK EXPERIENCE
BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION TRAINEESHIP
YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE
Year 10 work experience will take place in Term 4 Week 9 (Monday 7 December to Friday 11 December 2020). Students are responsible for organising their own work experience and will receive the paperwork for this before the end of this term.
UCAT
Any students considering a career in medicine or dentistry, will need to sit a compulsory entry exam known as the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) before they can apply for relevant placements in the aforementioned fields of study within universities. UCAT preparation is highly recommended. Being UCAT-ready means practising UCAT-style questions consistently over a longer period of time as opposed to leaving it until the time when students need to devote their full attention to their Year 12 work.

NATIONAL APOLOGY ASSEMBLY
During assembly on Thursday 20 February, we commemorated the 12th Anniversary of the Australian Parliament’s Apology to the Stolen Generations. Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, delivered the National Apology on 13 February in 2008. This day marks great significance to the history of our nation. It was a moment of solidarity and empathy to reflect upon Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of forced child removal and to the members of the Stolen Generations.
This apology was a step on the path to reconciliation. It marks a commitment to right the wrongs of the past and is about building a bridge of respect between all people.
An extract from the prayer reads;
Love one another and spread the message of God’s peace and love... Share the spiritual richness of our ancestors with all others, rejuvenate young Aboriginal ambassadors and leaders so that we, as a community, can celebrate the gift of change.
As a community, St John’s is committed to being a part of that change, bringing hope and justice to all Australians.
Mr. David Muller
Gooroon Coordinator
The PDHPE staff would like to welcome students and parents to an exciting year of PDHPE and Sport. 2020 has seen a restructure in Sport and aims to provide a wide range of sporting activities for students to participate in, with the focus being on variety, teamwork and most importantly, enjoyment.
In 2020 sport with be integrated into the PDHPE curriculum. Students will be participating in sport related activities that aim to complement the PDHPE syllabus outcomes. These sport specific periods will be allocated double PDHPE lessons and complement the students PDHPE practical lessons.
Students are required to wear PDHPE uniform on the periods in their timetable where they have placed a 'P'. The allocation of practical lessons for each class is a collaborative effort from all staff to ensure that school space and resources are used effectively as possible to ensure all students reach optimal learning outcomes. Notes for 7 and 8 Sport will be available on the Compass App. as well as hard copy next week and will provide a more detailed overview.
Thank you to all the students and parents for embracing this exciting change in the delivery of sport. The PDHPE staff are eager to see students engage in an energetic year of PDHPE and Sport.
Thank you.
