All the students and staff at St John’s attended the Ash Wednesday Liturgy last week to acknowledge the start of Lent. Lent is a time of spiritual growth. Giving up something for Lent fosters self-discipline and tempers our desires. It turns our minds to our God-given blessings and our responsibility to be mindful and active to help those less fortunate. It promotes spiritual growth and reflection.
If you're giving up something for Lent, that's great. But think also about the possibility of doing something positive to bolster your spiritual life and make the world a better place. Look for ways that you can increase your knowledge of your faith, strengthen your spiritual life or perform special acts of mercy and kindness at home, at work, in your parish or in your community. Caritas Australia’s annual Lenten fundraising and awareness-raising appeal, Project Compassion brings thousands of Australians together in solidarity with the world's poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.
At St John’s there are many social justice initiatives that offer students the opportunity to be informed and active citizens. It is exciting to see the many activities that they organise and how deeply informed they are in their ability to link the action with the goal to build a deeper understanding of those less fortunate. All students are welcome and encouraged to join any of these groups and contribute to the activities that they plan.
Publishing of Student Photo's
We regularly acknowledge students and events by publishing their photos in the school newsletter, website and other similar publications including Facebook. If you have concerns about your child appearing in any of these publications please contact the school office in writing (letter or email).

Mobile Phone Reminder
Please be aware that students are not to use their mobile phones throughout the day. If family members message or phone students, they are at risk of having their phones confiscated. Phones should be switched off and not carried in their shirt pockets, but rather in skirt or trouser pockets. Teachers do follow the confiscation policy. Have a good week.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CATHOLIC EDUCATION DIOCESE OF WOLLONGONG
Thank you for joining our Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong (CEDoW) schools across the Illawarra, Macarthur, Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands, and Catholic school communities across NSW, in celebrating Catholic Schools Week for 2019. It's been a wonderful week of open days, activities, masses, liturgies and other special events - including the Diocesan Education Mass, which was a significant highlight of CSW. Read more about the Mass and listen to Director of Schools, Peter Turner's speech here.
Catholic Schools Week has showcased some of the fantastic things happening in our schools every day, and has very much highlighted our local Catholic schools - including yours! - as vibrant places of learning, faith, hope and opportunity. Thank you for your involvement.
We'd like to share with you our small Catholic Schools Week video that has been promoted throughout last week. Can you spot the students from your school in this video?
Progress Grades
Progress Grades will be available via the student portal after 3.00pm on Friday 15 March. This grade is based on outcomes covered so far this semester. This is not a formal report but a snapshot of where your child is currently sitting in relation to the common grade scale.
Non Submission of Common Task
At St John's students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning. Staff have identified that some students need support getting common tasks in on time. As a school we are now adopting a common approach to non submission of Common Tasks.
If a task is not handed in on time:
- Consequence is given immediately as an assessment withdrawal. Students will be given time to reflect and refine their time management and organisational skills in order for them to become more independent, self motivated learners.
- If required two lunchtime learnings are also given to support the completion of the task.
NOTE: Year 10-12 will receive an N warning for late submission of assessment tasks.

Head Lice
Recently we have had some known cases of Head Lice in the school. Please check your childs hair regulary and treat accordingly if necessary.
Year 7 have had a few busy weeks that have kept them on their toes both in and out of the classroom. Camp in week three seems so long ago but I’m sure will forever be in the memories of the students. I would like to congratulate all of the students on the way they participated in the camp as a whole. Their involvement in the activities saw many students stepping outside their comfort zones to get the most out of the camp experience. Many have made new friends not only at camp but throughout their days at school and it is great to see these new relationships developing amongst the year group. I would also like to take this time to thank all the parent helpers that assisted us with the camp. It would not have been possible without you. A special thanks goes to Mrs Loreena Doumbos and Mrs Kylie Druce who assisted in the running of the kitchen for the duration of camp.
St Johns has a number of very active Social Justice Groups and Year 7 have recently had the opportunity to sign up to any of these groups. Some students have signed up to more than one and I encourage all students to get involved in Social Justice at the school in some way, find that group that resonates with their interests and passions. One particular Social Justice initiative that the whole school is currently participating in is fundraising for Caritas through Project Compassion. Money is collected each Wednesday morning in PALS during Lent and I encourage all students to dig deep to support those less fortunate.
Other extra-curricular activities that students are involved in are representative sport, music tuition and a couple of Year 7 students have signed up for the school play. It was also lovely to see last week the number of Year 7 students that participated in the school swimming carnival. It was an exciting day for all Year 7 students getting involved in house spirit in their first of many carnivals. Congratulations to those students selected to represent St John’s in the Diocesan Carnival coming up.
The Parent, Student and PALS Teacher Gathering held last week was met with enthusiasm across the PALS groups. If any parents would like any extra information from the night or were not able to attend please contact your child’s PALS teacher through the diary with any concerns you may have. Also last week a number of students received a letter inviting them to participate in our assessment support program. This program is designed to assist students in the planning and implementation of their assessment and assist them in their organisation. I encourage students invited to participate in this program to use it to assist them in growth and improvements in their learning.
Congratulations to all Year 7 students on a successful start to high school as we move toward the end of Term 1 and a huge thank you to all the parents who constantly support their children and the school in their learning.
“I was a stranger and you welcomed me and loved me as yourself”.
Mrs Sophie Daley
Year 7 Coordinator
As we race through Term 1 finding ourselves already in week 7, Year 8 have hit the ground running. Already the term has been busy with a number of events students have been involved in. The swimming carnival saw many Year 8 students participate in events as well as assist with the running of the day. The Year 7 Open Night also gave students an opportunity to involve themselves in the community by offering their time to showcase St John’s, which they did so in a number of different ways on the night.
Students are also busy with a number of assessment tasks that are due over the next couple of weeks. Can you please remind your child that they should be doing 45 minutes of homework every night to keep on top of these demands.
A number of students across year 8 have been arriving at school without the correct equipment such as charged computer, diary, pens and books. These pieces of equipment are vital for your childs day at school. Good habits in organisation need to be practiced to ensure students are well prepared for their school day.
I would like to congratulate all the students who participated in the All School’s Triathlon particularly Halle McKnight, Bryn Robinson-Mills and Jack Norton who participated in the individual event. Also, Jack Norton, Bryn Robinson-Mills and Chad Lyons who finish 7th in the CCC junior boys, well done boys!!
I encourage all Year 8 students to become more involved in community activities. As presented at last week’s assembly there are a number of worthwhile initiatives that students can join to be a more involved member of the St John’s community.

NEWS FROM THE LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT
French
Bonjour tout le monde,
Many French students from Years 8, 9 and 10 were very keen to represent St John’s at the Year 7 Open night last week. It was such a honour to have these exceptional students welcome visitors and participate in various presentations in French. While Years 8 and 9 spoke about what they are learning in their French courses and gave mini presentations in the target language, Year 10 presented a famous poem, ‘Déjeuner du Matin’ by Jacques Prévert, in the form of a mime. The evening was such a delight and highly successful. Merci beaucoup les élèves! Ça a été si apprécié.
Year 10 French
Year 10 French has enjoyed poetry analysis in French. They analysed the poem (mentioned above) and, in the target language, predicted what would happen beyond the poem. They wrote a SEAL paragraph about the poem’s central idea, the theme. Bravo la seconde! We had the pleasure of welcoming Christie Warren back to class after an extended absence in France. Christie lived in a small village, experiencing life as a local. It has been wonderful to have her share her experiences with us. However, it is even better to have a French student from France (staying with Christie and her family) join us at St John’s next week for an extended stay. Next newsletter will detail the wonderful benefits that students have gained from her stay.
Year 9 French
After learning how to read, write, listen and speak in the future tense, Year 9 French are about to undertake a learning experience where they plan a future holiday overseas – the destination of their choice – and write the details of their plans in French. It was very interesting to hear the variety of destinations chosen - not just French ones!
Year 8 French
Now that Year 8 French have learnt basic greetings, the numbers 1-20, the alphabet and a number of mini dialogues in French, they will embark on their new topic ‘J’ai faim et j’ai soif!’ (I have hunger and thirst!) Being a very popular topic for conversation, they have already shown great enthusiasm for this new unit of work.

On Thursday 7March 2019, the St. John’s community officially launched the school social justice program. Representatives of Johnnies Action Group (JAG), the Peace and ‘Xceptance’ (PAX) group, Bully Busters and Vinnies Youth all delivered presentations at the Assembly, highlighting not only the wonderful initiatives that each group participates in, but also the energy, enthusiasm and teamwork of their student members. A particular highlight was Lucian D’Hudson’s leading of ‘JAG Storytime’, in which he told the story of a tiny hummingbird doing its part to protect its home from an overwhelming forest fire. The student body most definitely connected with the moral of the tale, that being the practical and symbolic importance of the ‘little person’, or the ‘one’, in the face of adversity. The relevance of this message to social justice, to making a difference in the lives of others, and to giving to those in need, was clear for all to see.
It was also especially pleasing to see so many students attend the ‘O-week’ style booths at lunchtime on Thursday, and all social justice groups reported a great deal of interest from current and new members. Every student is invited to join a social justice group, and to contribute their individual talents and voice to their chosen group’s ‘mission’ to identify and respond to the needs of society – locally, regionally, and even globally. Students should pay close attention to the Daily Notices for specific group meeting locations and times.
Project Compassion is now also in full swing at St. John's. Collections will be made every Wednesday during Lent in PALS. We urge you to wholeheartedly support Caritas Australia in this appeal, as all monies donated will go directly to helping those most in need in our world.

Girls Touch Football Reports
Under 13 Girls
There was a mixture of nervousness and excitement as we arrived at the fields.
Game 1: The girls were still getting use to one another’s play. Ruby was doing lots of talking in the middle and getting the team organised, Mia was doing try saving touches, while Emma scored a try - weaving her way through the opposition. Unfortunately we lost in the last few seconds of the game going down 2-1
Game 2: The girls started to find their rhythm. Lara was defending well in the middle and Mia had the defence running in circles with her ducking and weaving. We had four try scorers in this game - Emma and Mia scored 2 each and Ruby and Marcell 1 each. Final score was 6-0 to Johnnies!
Game 3: Jaimi, Emma and Taiha were working well rolling forward. And Emma was running everywhere looking for the ball but unfortunately in this game the opposition was too strong and we went down 3-0.
Game 4: Lara made a great break up the middle and it took a diving touch from the opposition to stop her. Then it was our turn to do the try saving touches with Taiha chasing down a break from the opposition with a spectacular diving touch. Ruby was spreading the defence with some long passing from the middle. Emma continued to play havoc with the opposition scoring two more tries. Final score was a 2-2 draw
Game 5: Keely made some great runs up the wing in this game. Mia caught the defence napping and showed good vision to sprint to the corner for our first try. Ruby continued to find the line, weaving through the centre and diving over the line for a try. Unfortunately we lost this game 2-3 and again the opposition scored the winning try in the last few seconds.
Game 6: Phoebe was doing a great job on the wing ensuring the opposition couldn’t get around her. Taiha continued to use her speed to chase down opposition breaks. Mia scored a near length of the field try from the first touch. This game finished in a 1-1 draw.
Game 7: Maggie was working hard in the middle ensuring quick play the balls and linking with the wings in attack. Ruby was very busy in the middle and had the defence guessing and crossed the line three times for a hat trick! Keely, Emma and Phoebe all scored a try each. Final score 6-0 win.
Game 8: Marcell played well as our link, running the ball up hard and making sure our wings got the ball. Jaimi showed great enthusiasm on the field working hard in defence. Ruby was successful in diving for the line again, scoring our only try. Final result was a 1-0 win.
Game 9: The girls had been playing so well all day and they were keen to finish with another win. Phoebe showed amazing speed, getting touched just short of the line. Ruby continued to weave her magic up the middle, diving over for one last try. Final score 1-0 to Johnnies!
Final results: 5 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw. Try scorers - Ruby 7; Emma 6; Mia 4 and Marcell, Keely and Phoebe 1.
It was a great day of touch with the girls playing well as a team and enjoying themselves on and off the field. They showed great sportsmanship throughout the day. I would like to thank all the girls for representing St Johns so well and a special thankyou to Jaimi who kept picking up after me all day! And an even bigger thankyou to Bailey Hazelwood for refereeing ALL of our games!!
Coach: Wendy Isemonger
Under 15 Girls
The under 15’s girls had a great day at Dalton park on Wednesday 27 February. Overall, the team won 5 games, had one draw and lost 3. They got stronger as a team as the day went, winning the last 4 games of the day. Melanie Staunton was the lead try scorer for the day and Keira Buckpitt and Allira Smith were amazing in both attack and defence. Well done girls, you should be extremely proud of your efforts.
Coach: Kirsty Church
Open Girls
An early morning bus ride to Fairy Meadow saw the Open girls team commence the day with a solid start. The girls showed excellent team work weaving their way through the oppositions to win the first few games. With Sophie Phillips running well past try line and some brilliant play making from Olivia Ritchie, Aroha and Jess were both successful in finding the try line more than once. Utilising the speed of our wingers, our defense was hard to break through. The second half of the draw was tough. It saw us facing very skilled oppositions competition. The team finished the day with a few very close losses and draws. Thanks to the girls for a great day of Touch and displaying great sportsmanship. Congratulations to Aroha Spillane for her selection in the Wollongong Diocese Team and Jess Ward for her selection as a shadow player.
Coach: Hayley Prayetno
All Schools Triathlon
Individual Event:
On 28 February, seven St John’s students represented the school in the Individual Triathlon event. These students were Kirra Dale, Kieren Harrison, Halle McKnight, Jack Norton, Bryn Robinson-Mills, Freya Robinson-Mills and Lachlan Sleath. All students performed well on the day and competed in good spirits. Notable mention to Kieren Harrison who came in 10th place in the CCC Division for Senior Boys and Freya Robinson-Mills who finished 6th in the CCC Division for Intermediate Girls.
Team Event:
On 1 March, 87 St John’s students travelled to Penrith to compete in the relay event of the All Schools Triathlon. Many teams had been training and preparing for this event for quite some time and were excited for their races. The day began before 4:30 am, when teachers and students departed from the school bus bay. By 7:30 am they had arrived at the Regatta Centre and were ready for big day. The Junior Boys were the first teams to race. Like most age divisions, our school had 5 teams entered. An impressive performance from Jack Norton, Bryn Robinson-Mills and Chad Lyons’ team saw the boys finish 7th in the CCC Division. The Junior Girls were next, again with 5 teams competing. The Girls had a consistent approach to their races, with the St John’s teams all finishing within 14 places of each other in the CCC Division. For the Intermediate category, again our school saw 5 boys and 5 girls teams compete. Notable mention to Elise Irvine, Baylee Holland and Freya Robinson-Mills whose team placed 5th in the CCC Division. Reuben Pichler, Lachlan Sleath and Caleb Cook also performed extremely well on the day, coming in 8th place in the CCC Division for Intermediate Boys. Our senior teams no doubt were our biggest supporters on the day, who regardless of the long wait for their races, continued to cheer for their younger teammates. With 3 Senior Boys and 5 Senior Girls team racing, our older students set a prime example of how to compete with exceptional effort and sportsmanship.
Thank you to Mrs Frew, Mrs Daley, Mr Watson and Miss Davis who attended the day. Thank you also to Finn Nelson and Ralph Jones who assisted as photographer and videographers, and to all parents and carers who came up to support (and of course those who woke up early to drop students at the bus bay). Finally a big congratulations to all students who competed at the event for 2019. See you next year!

The New NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy
Food and Drink Benchmark
Term 1 2019 there will be a few changes to the canteen menu, to comply with the new NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy, which replaces the old Traffic Light criteria of food and drinks that can be sold in school canteens. This means three quarters of the menu is everyday food from the five food groups and one quarter of the menu is occasional foods with a 3.5 or higher food star rating. Some food items high in sugar, salt and/or saturated fats that do not reach a 3.5 food star rating will be removed from the menu, eg. iced tea, Ovaltinis, cough lollies, JJ's Jumpies and some ice creams, so not too many changes. The canteen staff are working hard sourcing new and nutritious snacks and ice creams to add to the menu, eg. dip & nibbles packs, cheese dip & biscuits, fruit pikelets & scones, house made pasta dishes & salads, frozen juice cups and coconut juice ice blocks. There will be lots of new items to choose from. If you have any questions, ideas or a few hours spare to volunteer in the canteen, please contact the Canteen Manager on 4423 1359.
The school offers the convenience of online lunch orders for all students. If you wish to order online please click on the school lunch online image on the website to register.
Close off for orders is 8.30am daily, a 25c transaction fee applies. If there are any discrepancies with your order, please contact 1300 787 939.
Volunteers please note: Sign in at the School Office on the computerised system before you commence your shift. Please wear enclosed shoes, long hair tied back, no excessive jewellery (i.e. rings, bracelets).
Our Children – Engaging and Growing in God’s Love
Our children are precious to us and to God – made in his image. As parents, grandparents, catechists and sacramental program leaders, how do we encourage and nurture our children as they grow in this awareness? These sessions will reflect on the process of growth in faith, how children are actively involved in their own social and spiritual development – sometimes for the good and sometimes through suffering and hardship.
