EXCELLENCE
‘Excellence is never an accident. Excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better.’
There has been so many opportunities to witness excellence in the St John’s community over the last few weeks that I feel it is worth acknowledging both the breadth of opportunities available and the wonderful culture of engagement that students have; they are always willing to ‘give it a go’.
There have been an outstanding school Play, the dance troupe’s profound story told in their Wakakirri performance, the production of an Art Installation for public exhibition at Shellharbour, the selection of two students for the National Youth Science Forum, the team entry into the Maths Olympiad, the girls football team making the state finals and these are just a selection over a two week period.
We encourage all young people to aim for personal best and always strive to do better. We also love to celebrate their successes and support their endeavours.
As a school we have clear learning dispositions that challenge each member of our learning community to excellence. These are :
Inquires, Imaginative, Ownership, Challenge, Reflects and Reflective
Teachers use this language to encourage students to achieve their personal best. Parents and carers are also encouraged to use this language to inspire our young learners to excellence and help them develop the skills and belief in themselves as able and willing to set the bar high and continue to reach for it.
ST JOHN'S WAKAKIRRI WINNERS!
Wakakirri is Australia’s largest Story Dance Festival, involving hundreds of schools and over 20,000 students across the nation each year.
We are excited to announce, St John's Wakakirri troupe WON the Shoalhaven Regional Wakakirri Challenge and now move on to the NSW Performance in September! Also recipients of the 'Best Drama Story Award', this is a huge achievement and we are so proud of our team!
Thank you to our teachers Ms. Savannah Lloyd and Mrs. Di Bryce for your endless efforts in all aspects of production, including choreographing our team's amazing dance which tells the heart-felt story of a Syrian Refugee's journey.
EXTENSION LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
It is pleasing to see so many of our students taking up challenges to extend their learning. Many opportunities for gifted and talented students occur each day, both during class as well as through extra-curricular activities. This week saw Year 8, 9 and 10 students engage in STEM Challenges at the University of Wollongong Science and Engineering Workshop.
Students from Year 10 used technology to challenge Bega High School in Round 4 of the NSW Junior Chess Knockout, whilst Year 7 & 8 students tackled the Maths Olympiad Paper #3 with five challenging problems to solve!
FOOTBALL TEAM - TOP 4 IN NSW!
Congratulations to our girls soccer team on their brilliant performance this week to come away with a convincing 4-0 win over Xavier College Penrith, placing our team in the Top 4 in NSW CCC. We wish the girls the best of luck for the upcoming semi-finals.
THE NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA
The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) takes place at St John’s every year. The NCCD is a collection that counts:
- the number of school students receiving an adjustment or ‘help’ due to disability
- the level of adjustment they are receiving to access education on the same basis as other students.
Students are counted in the NCCD if they receive ongoing adjustments at school due to disability. This ‘help’ allows them to access education on the same basis as a child without disability. The NCCD uses the definition of disability in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. Schools provide this information to education authorities.
Click here for further information about the NCCD.
Mrs. Sandra Hogan
Principal
With Year 12 exams now under way, the HSC not too far down the track, and Year 11 Preliminary exams towards the end of the term, I thought that our parents and carers may appreciate a few tips to get through the weeks to come and most importantly to support the student in your household. Obviously maintaining good routines and habits around eating well, sleeping and exercise is the best place to start. However, if you feel your son or daughter is struggling a little the following may be useful. One of the best things parents or carers can do if their child is experiencing exam stress is to try to be as supportive and tolerant as possible.
EFFECTIVE STUDY AND LEARNING HABITS
Parents and carers can help reduce the exam stress of their child by helping them establish effective study and learning habits:
- Help your child find a quiet place to study without distractions. Make sure their table is uncluttered so they can focus better.
- Encourage your child to find out exactly what the test involves - are there past test papers they can look at to help them understand what to expect?
- Encourage your child to ask for help or ask their teacher for clarity if they are unsure of something or if they feel confused.
- Help them to make 'mind maps' to collect ideas and summarise thoughts - use bright colours to help remember important links.
- Help them to plan their study schedule early on so they have sufficient time to study. It can be helpful to develop a clear, realistic plan of what they want to cover in each study session. Can they break it down into small chunks?
- Remind your child to take a short rest and move around in between each part of their study.
- Offer help sometimes. It can be useful having someone to listen or practice with.
- These ideas for exam day are good to keep in mind and it is probably best to talk about these ideas before exam day so as not to add to stress levels. Suggest to your child that they:
- Eat a good and light breakfast - something that will sustain them and help them concentrate.
- Try to arrive at school or the exam venue early.
- Go to the toilet before the exam starts.
- Keep away from people who may agitate them before the test or may say unhelpful, anxiety-provoking comments.
- Try writing about their thoughts and feelings at least 10 minutes before the exam to free up brainpower from focusing on emotions, so they can focus on the test material instead.
- Take time to slow their breathing and relax when they first sit down in the exam room.
- Skim over the exam paper, underlining key words and instructions.
- Work out how long they have for each question or section.
- Watch out for the wording of the questions - they need to understand and address what the question is really asking.
- Answer the questions they find easiest first to build their confidence, then as they relax more move on to more difficult ones.
- Don't worry about how long others are taking but keep an eye on the clock to ensure they have enough time to answer the more difficult questions.
- Re-read answers if possible and make any changes that are necessary - correct spelling, check workings.

SJE VALUES AND ENGAGEMENT CHALLENGE!
Dear Parents, Carers and Students,
Firstly, I would like to welcome everyone back to Term 3. I hope everyone had a nice and restful break and are ready for an exciting Term 3.
Term 3 or Semester 2 is a really important time in the school year, because for me, it’s a great time for reflection. When I spoke to students at assembly last week, I explored the school values of Love, Hope, Compassion, Peace, Justice, Hospitality and Reverent Spirituality as well as Lucian D’Hudson and Bonnie Butler’s School Captain’s address where they issued a challenge to all students; How will you use your gifts for the better of the school community?
I revisited this challenge to students and asked them to take time in these opening weeks and reflect on what they had done to contribute to the school community in Terms 1 and 2, how did they uphold and live our school values?
Here is where I am asking for the support of our parents/carers and the wider community. Challenge your son, daughter or person in your care by asking them about their role as a member of the SJE community.
Were they a bystander and simply sat back and watched those events happen or did they find a way to engage, find a way to use their talents to get involved and make this community stronger?
Love, Hope, Compassion, Peace, Justice, Hospitality and Reverent Spirituality are not simply things we say at SJE, they are things we do, they are how we show who we are collectively as a school community.
I have included a few reflection questions that might help parents/carers challenge their son, daughter or person in their care;
- How did you engage with your classwork?
- How did you approach your various rich tasks?
- How did you interact with your teachers? Your peers?
- How did you wear your uniform?
- What additional academic, social justice, creative arts or sporting event did you engage with?
- How was Term 1 and Term 2 for you?
- What worked, what didn’t?
- What is going to stay the same?
- What is going to change?
- What are you going to get involved with in Term 3?
Mr. James Eirth

YEAR 12 TRIAL EXAMINATIONS
Exams begin in week 3 and classes recommence on Tuesday, 20 August.
Assessment procedures and rules apply for all exams. This includes the NESA rules regarding electronic devices. Mobile telephones or smart watches are NOT PERMITTED in the examination room. Similarly, they are NOT to be in students’ pockets. They must be signed in with the Curriculum Office.
Only essential equipment may be brought into the exam room. It is the student’s responsibility for the security of their phones and electronic devices; they may be best left at home. Breach of this rule will result in a zero mark.
If students are unwell the school misadventure procedure must be followed. Appropriate documentation must be supplied and students must be ready to sit the missed exam on their return to school.
We wish students the very best of luck with their exams!
YEAR 7 ROSARY BEADS
Last week, Year 7 Religion students made Rosary beads as part of their 'Ways of Praying' unit of work. This practical activity was used to assist students with relating to God through prayer and build on experiences of personal and communal prayer which are at the heart of our St John's community.
Following on from this lesson, this week students explored another way of praying, engaging in the Labyrinth.
INTERVIEWERS REQUIRED FOR MOCK INTERVIEWS
We are currently sourcing parents and other members of the community with experience in interviewing who may be willing to donate their time to interview a series of students on this day at our school. Interviews will be 15 minutes each and the day will be in three main sessions: 8.40am to 11.10am, 12.00 to 1.45pm and 2.00pm to 2.45 pm, as we need to interview around 150 on this day any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

YEAR 10 BUSINESS REVIEW
During the week, students met with their teams and were given a range of activities to complete to help develop employability skills such as communication, collaboration, taking initiative and problem solving skills. This resulted in the careful planning and collaborating with peers to create a business concept based on running a cafe.
Through a visit to the University of Wollongong Career Expo, students were informed about business and employability skills, learning from guest speakers, including Kangaroo Valley Eggs and Jaffa Designworx.
Students put their learning into action, working in groups to create a company name, branding, marketing, shopfront display, pricing structure, signature dish, video resumes, job descriptions, 30 second commercials, trade displays, full business reports and oral presentations.
The concepts and creativity presented by students were outstanding and exceptionally clever! Whilst students were drawn to the ice-cream giveaways at 'Papa Muirs Ice Cream', the concept presented by 'Young Mugs' to pose as rappers selling snoopdogs (hot dogs), Ice-T (Iced Tea), J-coke, A$AP Rocky Road, Eninem Cookies (M & M cookies) and Chris Brownies was well executed.
It was wonderful to see such variety of exhibitions, with students incorporating various cultures and lifestyles from French cuisine in the 'Bonne Journee Cafe' to classic American themed 'Joe's Diner', 'Herbal Hyppies', surf culture in 'The Shack', and a colour themed cafe, 'The Orange Tie'.
One of everyone's best loved cooks was not forgotten, with 'Nan's Kitchen' and 'Tea with Nanna' each providing a lovely selection of tea and baked goods, alongside 'Shake n Bake' and 'Rise n Grnd'.
Chocolate, Milk and sweets were plentiful with 'Milk me up!', 'Milk 'n' Co', 'Choc-a-lot' and 'Jaucks Goodness' each presenting an appetising display.
Students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the event, nominating their favourite business in a secret voting ballot. Overall the winners of the week were;
Following the success of the event, there is little doubt, St John's will be producing some of the future's finest entrepreneurs!

NEWS FROM THE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT
A common question asked by parents is how many schools are using Maths Pathway. At this stage there are 269 schools across Australia with over 2,200 teachers. To more fully answer this question try clicking here to take you to a page listing most of these schools which are from all educational sectors.
PERSONALISED LEARNING IN MATHS
Did you know that in the average classroom, there is an eight year spread of ability? When content is delivered according to year level, it is incredibly challenging to target every student’s point of need. Many students find the work too easy and get bored and many others find the work too difficult and sometimes find it easier to give up. Maths Pathway overcomes these challenges supporting the teacher to provide truly differentiated learning to each student. This gives the teacher the opportunity to provide a wider variety of learning experiences through rich tasks whilst still being confident that students are growing in their Maths knowledge. The Maths Pathway Personalised Learning web page provides excellent background information and research data for parents.
MATHS OLYMPIAD
The St Johns Maths Olympiad team has been enjoying the challenges of solving some tough problems. Members of the team are;

HOLIDAY WORKSHOP
In preparation for the upcoming Trial HSC exams many Year 12 students availed themselves of the holiday workshop offered by the Maths faculty. These students are studying Standard, Advanced and Extension1. Students came to school for a morning and made use of the Maths Staff who had offered their time. Many students worked through a past paper whilst others worked on topics that they needed to spend time on. At all times the Maths Staff were ready to provide help as required. A similar workshop will be offered during the next holiday break in preparation for the HSC.

"During 19 -21 July, Riley, Elly and I attended an Indigenous AFL Youth Leadership Camp.
This camp was held in Homebush and was aimed at young women aged 15 years and under.
Luckily we were selected after applying and got to experience what a professional athlete's routine is like.
We fortunately got to meet some Giants players, men and women and got coached by some as well.
Delma Gisu was one of the Giants players we met, she mentored us the whole weekend and told her inspirational story of how she was one of the first Indigenous women AFL players to be drafted.
We also got coached by Haneen Zreika, she was truly inspirational and guided us through the weekend teaching us new skills and techniques along the way.
It was so much fun and we can't wait to use the skills we learnt in our games with the Bomaderry Tigers".
