FOUNDATION DAY
This Friday we celebrate our Foundation day, a very special day for our school community.
Our Foundation Day is celebrated on the feast of Pentecost. This is the day that the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles and sent them to take the Good News to all. It is the Holy Spirit who ‘reveals God’. To this end our young people at St John’s do the most wonderful work in revealing God in their care and actions for those less fortunate and our world.
St John the Evangelist Catholic High school is the realisation of the dream and hard work of the Nowra catholic parish of St Michael’s. Parishioners raised the funds for the school with lamington drives and chook raffles. They would be very proud today as they look not only at what a wonderful school they established but how their active engagement is so evident in the students of St John’s even more so today. They are active and informed citizens who give their time to raise awareness and funds for organisations and issues such St Vincent de Paul (Vinnies Youth), the environment (JAG), equality for all (PAX), and Youth ministry to name a few.
We celebrate a whole school mass together on this day, enjoy a ‘country fair’ organised by everyone and then watch many students and staff showcase their talents.
YEAR 12 RETREAT
Congratulations to the students and staff who engaged in the Year 12 retreat. The atmosphere at Waterslea was very special with a great sense of celebration and cohesion. They engaged so fully in all the activities and shared in a very prayerful manner in the spiritual experiences. I had the most wonderful evening with these young people and commend them on the commitment they show to enabling everyone to feel valued. They will certainly make a difference with what they have to offer both at school and beyond.

On Wednesday 4 May 2022, the Year 9 cohort, Year 10 helpers and several brave teachers and parents ventured out to Bangalee Scout Camp for Year 9 Camp.
This was the first time many of our students had not only slept in a tent, but spent multiple days away from their families. The positive attitude and energy the students were able to maintain the entire camp was extremely impressive.
Thanks for a great few days, Year 9. The growth I witnessed within our group socially as a group is invaluable. These opportunities are few and far between and you made the most of it. It is the most proud I have been as a Year Coordinator so far.
Over three days, the students participated in amazing activities that pushed them mentally, physically and emotionally. The students abseiled, bushwalked, canoed, created an artwork on our nature canvas, played games in Social Survivor and ate some unique food at Yarn 'n’ Cook.
With assistance from our incredible staff, our Year 10 helpers ran the activities and learnt what it is like to step into the shoes of a teacher. Every year these students display professionalism and maturity beyond their years, this group of students was no exception. You should be extremely proud of the efforts you put in.
A special thanks goes out to the dedicated parent volunteers that helped cook and serve food and pick up/drop off the students equipment and bags. These types of events are not possible without your help.
The last thank you is for the staff. These teachers volunteered their time to stay overnight, supervise the students, serve food, leave lessons back at school etc. This is a monumental effort that deserves recognition.
YEAR 9 YAM PROGRAM
The Catholic Education Office is committed to delivering a school-based peer support and mental health literacy program called Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM) to all Year 9 students across the diocese.

Year 9 Coordinator
What a busy and productive term it has been for Year 10. I am so glad to be back and working with this wonderful group of students again. They have been so welcoming and it feels like I never left. A big thank you to Tammie Castles who was acting Year Coordinator in my absence and is job sharing the position with me for the remainder of the Year. Tammie will be active in the role on Thursdays when I am not at school.
Year 10 are entering into a busy period with many assessment tasks due and a number of excursions coming up. A reminder that for the majority of excursions consent does have to be given by parents through Compass.
SUBJECT SELECTION
This is an important time for students as they begin to make the choices for their course of study for the remainder of their time at St John’s. Students were given a booklet with information on all the courses provided here at St Johns. We encourage them to discuss this with their parents and guardians but do remind them to keep this booklet in their bags as over the next few weeks they will be having discussions from a number of KLA’s in regards to the choices they are about to make. We will be holding an information evening on Thursday 16 June for parents and students and hopefully will be able to answer any questions you have about the process. A reminder for students to take time with their choices as it is not first in best dressed. I look forward to seeing you all at the information evening coming up.

DIOCESAN CROSS COUNTRY
The unsafe track due to heavy rainfall impacted the ability to run this year's Wollongong Diocese Cross Country event at Willandra as planned. In place of this event, competitive athletes in the Wollongong Diocese were invited to attend a NSW CCC trial at Narellan on Monday 23 May.
St John's was represented by eight outstanding athletes, who did us proud, all placing in the top 8 of their event! 6 of our athletes also placed in the top 6, earning selection to compete at the NSW CCC Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek on Tuesday 7 June. Congratulations to our amazing athletes!
ATHLETICS NOMINATIONS 2022
As you are aware, we have had to postpone the St John’s Athletic Carnival that was scheduled to take place on Friday 13 May 2022.
Unfortunately, due to the continuous poor weather and numerous ground closures, we have been unable to secure an appropriate athletics ground and date for a Term Two Athletics Carnival.
As such, the proposed time of the St John the Evangelist Athletics Carnival will be in Term 3. Please note, a final decision and date will be identified that takes into consideration the Year 12 HSC Trial Examination timetables and will be to celebrate school culture.
This new date has clear implications for the pathway of nomination to representing Wollongong at NSWCCC as CEDoW requires nominations for those wishing to compete at the Diocesan carnival to be in by Week 9 Term 2.
In speaking with CEDoW, this year, nominations will be completed by students via the Google Form link below by Wednesday 15 June. Please note, students should only complete the form if they wish to compete at the Diocesan Carnival in Term 3, Week 2 (Friday 29 July), be considered for NSWCCC representation and have appropriate evidence to support their nomination.
Evidence will need to come in the form of registered times via an approved Athletics Body or Coach.
If you have any questions in relation to the nomination process or evidence required, please contact Mr Craig Holden, our Representative Sport Coordinator on 4423 1666 or info@sjedow.catholic.edu.au.
Further information on the Wollongong Diocese Athletics Carnival may be accessed here.
We thank you for your ongoing support with Representative Sport at SJE and want to assure you that we are trying to keep all avenues open for students to succeed and grow.
SJE Athletics Team Nomination - Please note, this nomination form is to be completed through the student portal only.

HSC Biology students in Term 1 participated in a 2 day incursion here at St John’s to learn more about biotechnology - what it is, the science involved, and how it can be used to make biotech medicines using genetically modified bacterium.
The program featured a hands-on molecular biology approach, and gave students the opportunity to explore the methods scientists use to create biotechnology engineered medicines.
St John’s teachers in partnership with the University of Sydney and AMGEN Pharmaceuticals led students through the molecular engineering process that allows human insulin to be mass produced in vats by bacteria. As we are unable to experiment on human genes, a red fluorescent gene from a sea urchin was engineered by the students into E. coli bacterium. Students had to manipulate the plasmids with restriction enzymes, run confirmation electrophoresis gels and amplify the target gene using Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a method widely used to rapidly make millions to billions of copies (complete copies or partial copies) of a specific DNA sample, allowing scientists (aka Year 12 Biology students) to take a very small sample of DNA and amplify it (or a part of it) to a large enough amount to study/visualise in detail.
In conjunction with the above program, we also ran a parent/child genetics evening
where parents and their child worked the genetics samples from a crime scene scenario, to determine the forensic evidence for 2 potential suspects.
Whilst studying Module 7 infectious Disease, students performed a practical investigation to test for microbes in food and water. Students used aseptic techniques to collect samples and cultured them on agar plates. A wide variety of interesting bacteria and fungi were cultured and visible that students were able to identify and link to disease causing pathogens.
Preliminary Biology students undertook a field trip to the Mt Kiera escarpment to investigate a remnant of a rainforest ecosystem at its base. This is a mandatory component of the Biology syllabus and students soon got to grips with field sampling techniques they had practised in the laboratory and investigated both the evolutionary interactions of the unique flora and fauna, as well examining the distribution and the relationship to the changing ecosystem dynamics that are very different to their local bushland communities.
Year 11 Biologists soon got friendly with some of the locals ….. not for the squeamish!
Preliminary Biology students have been introduced to the permeability of a cell membrane. As part of our Depth study this term, students are creating their own 3D model of a Fluid Mosaic membrane and analysing the importance of scientific models and their limitations. Using their research to develop their new deep understanding of the structure and function of cellular membranes, students have experimented with the membranes of eggs and investigated how selective the membrane is by placing eggs in various osmotic substances. We have had some accidental errors in the breaking of the egg’s membrane, however overall results were gathered to provide a clear understanding and conclusion. Chloe Poulton has submitted her completed fluid mosaic model pictured.
Year 12 Chemistry have been investigating the analytical chemistry and mathematics behind Titration.
While some students find chemical calculations challenging, all of the students in chemistry always enjoy a good experiment!
Year 11 Chemistry have been working hard and progressing well throughout the preliminary HSC course. This week students commenced their new topic which explores reactive chemistry. Students can be seen below using our mini whiteboards and molecular model kits to demonstrate chemical change, which is when chemical bonds between atoms are broken and atoms are rearranged to form new substances.
Preliminary Physics students have been studying the Dynamics of Motion, focusing on Newton's Three Laws of Motion and the Conservation of momentum. Students have been studying the practical aspects through the use of collision carts on an air bed, filming the impact and analysing the video using the UNSW Tracker software.
Students in Year 10 have studied both Evolution and Chemistry so far in preparation for their subject selections later this term.
2022 began with investigations on origins, leading to Darwin’s theory, Evolution by Natural Selection. Students investigated this effect on people living at high altitude as well as many animal groups, including marsupials and their origins in Gondwanaland and the effects of isolation on the inhabitants of the Galapagos islands. This term they have focussed on Chemistry, performing balanced chemical equations, examining ionic and covalent bonding, before investigating the impacts of acids and bases. This term, Year 9 have been studying the topic Energy Usage. They have been investigating the transfer and transformation of energy in a range of different scenarios, for example the electrical energy of a power-point being transformed into light in a lightbulb. They have made use of interactive investigation tasks to investigate these transformations and will be performing in-class experiments after their half yearly exam.
Some students in Year 9 have been studying energy usage in Science. As part of this topic, students designed and created their own roller coaster to show how energy transformations from potential to kinetic energy back and forth many times over the course of a ride. Kinetic energy is energy that an object has as a result of its motion whereas gravitational potential energy is the energy stored in an object as the result of its vertical position or height.
Other Year 9 have investigated the amount of energy in chips as part of their investigations on energy transformations.
Year 8 have been investigating a bioplastic made out of milk for a depth study.
Year 7 have investigated separating mixtures as part of their work on the properties and structure of matter as they get used to working scientifically.
As young scientists they are given tasks, such as the task of separating a mixture of sand, salt, iron filings and rocks back into each individual component. Students use a range of separation techniques, previously learned in class such as sieving, evaporation, filtration and magnetic separation, to accomplish this task with accuracy and attention to detail.
You did an excellent job, Well Done.

2021 GRADUATE CARRIES ON COMMUNITY WORK
Joe Visser graduated from St John's in the class of 2021. The talented Purcell House Captain with a passion for music and writing, has continued to demonstrate the Catholic values we engage in here at St John's, volunteering in various community roles and encouraging other young people to do the same.
In addition to writing his own songs and balancing his studies, Joe volunteered alongside another St John's graduate, James (JD) Talty, creating the radio segment 'J²' becoming hosts and interviewers on the Triple U FM radio community radio station throughout 2020 & 2021.
One of J²'s first interviews on air was with a local Shoalhaven 2 piece rock band 'The Debbies', consisting of 2019 St John's graduates Alex Robertson and Noah Egan.
Joe also donated many hours assisting with local beach patrols as a volunteer lifesaver and around the same time joined the #LoveOzYA committee, a group dedicated to promoting Australian Young Adult literature to Australian teens.
Joe has combined his writing talent with his commitment to making a difference, publishing an article in the Sydney Sentinel's online publication encouraging youth to make a difference today, as Australia marks National Volunteer Week.
Joe's articles may be viewed on the following links. We are extremely proud to see our graduates continue to live by the values instilled at St John's. Congratulations Joe!
