Farewell Staff
Mr Bill Barry
Mr Barry was a foundation member of staff at St John the Evangelist High School and as such has been a school community member since the beginning.
Bill has been the PDHPE coordinator at St John's and led an outstanding faculty in his role. Bill has always been very generous with his time and talents and has engaged in all aspects in and out of the school on so many occasions. Bill has been involved as a coach, trainer and support in of the sports that have been offered over the years and his enthusiasm saw him involved at Diocesan, State and National level in some. His passion for rugby league also engaged him internationally and won him state level awards.
Bill has always enjoyed seeing students learning and engaging. His love of water sports and community service came together in his involvement in surf club. St John's was once acknowledged as the country school with the most students trained to be surf life savers as a result of the in-school program he organised.
Bill’s dedication went far beyond the sporting arena. He was present at so many extracurricular events. He even appeared as a cameo role in a school production one year.
Bill also has a strong commitment to his faith and willingly shared this with our community from teaching Religious Education to being involved in Liturgies.
We wish Bill the best in his retirement.
Ms Pauline Banting
Pauline has been a long term member of St John’s and has contributed to the school in many leadership positions. She has been a year coordinator, English Coordinator and the Chisholm house patron. Pauline has always had a passion for social justice and has led many initiatives in the school to assist those less fortunate. She worked with the Chisholm house each year to raise substantial funds with the ‘What’s in the box’ stall. As English coordinator she had a strong focus on ensuring that all students met their potential and was creative in her planning and programing to challenge the gifted and provided support to those that needed it. Pauline was also very committed to her faith and a great role model for Faith in Action in our school.
We wish Pauline the best in her retirement.
Mrs Sue Valente
We wish Sue the best in her retirement.
Mrs Mary Allison
We wish Mary the best in her retirement.
Fr Duane
As you are aware Fr Duane has moved to West Wollongong Parish. We farewelled Fr Duane at the school assembly last Thursday. He was gifted with a new black jacket from the school. Embossed on the pocket was our motto and peace dove in memory of St John’s.

Uniform
All students must wear the winter uniform from Monday Day 1 Term 2. All students must wear their blazers to school and into PALS and then again from last lesson home.
For girls: stockings replace socks with skirts. Withdrawals will apply from day 1. You may need to get your blazer cleaned over the holidays.
Piercings
Coming up to the holidays, it may be a temptation for your son and daughter to get
an additional piercing, however, as it take approximately 6 weeks to heal, we would
suggest that this is avoided. Students are not permitted to have additional piercings
to those listed in the School Diary. If students do have noticeable additional
piercings, they will be asked to remove them and placed on uniform withdrawal.
Safe Holidays
As we come to the end of Term 1, I would sincerely like to say thank all of the staff,
students and parents for another wonderful Term. SJE is a unique community full of
wonderful people all striving toward the same purpose - the care, wellbeing and
education of your sons, daughters and people in your care.
I would also like to wish everyone a well deserved, safe and enjoyable break over the
next two weeks and hope you have a peaceful Easter. I look forward to seeing you
again for another amazing Term on Monday 29 April.
challenges for parents and students who are experiencing hardship, as such, I have
attached a great support resource that we use as a school community to highlight

Young Koori Womens Group
Last week of Term One, Gooroon had a great time with the team from Waminda, Young Koori Women's Group. They talked about services provided in our community and preparing for their lives after Year 12. The girls enjoyed various activities including creating a Visual Inspirational Board to set goals and build on their future aspirations. This was a wonderful experience for the girls and a great opportunity for Waminda to showcase their services.
Ms Debbie Millington
GOOROON Support
It was with great pleasure that I was team captain for the SJE 2019 Relay For Life team for this inspiring community event. Our 35 participants were wonderful ambassadors for our school and got into the spirit of the Relay, even though the weather at times was against us, with the cold and strong winds. A particular mention to parents of Jade Hall, Lorna and Steve Hall, who helped keep our tent safe by holding onto the beam of the shelter whenever a gust of wind hit, enabling the rest of us to walk and build up our lap tally (and keep warm). The team walked and ran over 1300 laps, approximately 5500km. A special mention to Jessica Kelly who individually, in only a few hours, had run and walked 130 laps; Paige Clarke who completed 100 laps and to Lucian D’Hudson, who ran many laps but didn’t record on the tally sheet. Twelve of our senior students braved the cold conditions staying overnight and participated in Relay activities such as midnight onesie run, the 1:00am trivia, the 2:00am scavenger hunt and a couple even participated in the 3:00am yoga session.
Many thanks to all the SJE staff and parents who came along during the day and evening to support the team and the Relay.
I hope the photos attached capture the spirit of our SJE Relay For Life team of 2019 and this inspirational community event, Relay For Life.

Diocesan Tennis
On Thursday 28March, Patrick Muller, Sean Donald, Jiah King and Christian Muller participated in the Wollongong Diocesan Tennis Teams Event at Beaton Park. In perfect playing conditions our boys were eager to get off to a good start against Corpus Christi. Patrick played a nearly flawless game winning 6-1 to get the team off to a flying start. Sean got an early break to lead 2-0, but his opponent broke back and held his next three service games to force Sean to serve for the match at 5-4. Some great serving and powerful shots from the baseline saw Sean take the match 6-4. Jiah and Christian both had easy wins both defeating their opponents 6-0 giving St John’s the overall win 4 matches to 0.
Next opponent was St Benedict’s. Our boys were too good for them winning all matches 6-0 setting up a match with Mt Carmel for a spot in the final. With the top doubles pairing of Patrick and Sean accounting for their opponents it was left to Jiah and Christian to consolidate a 2-0 advantage heading into the singles matches. In a tough and difficult encounter, the boys triumphed 6-3 meaning we had to only win 2 of the next 4 matches to proceed to the final. Our number 1 and 2 seated players (Patrick and Sean), got on top of their opponents early and never looked back ensuring that we got through to the final.
In a highly anticipated final the boys were looking to give their best in a daring attempt to produce an upset against the formidable Holy Spirit. A spirited conclusion was capped off with magnificent display of athletic prowess from both teams. The doubles matches were quite an entertaining affair with both St John’s teams victorious giving us a 2-0 lead heading into the singles matches against our more favoured opponents. The singles 1 match was very entertaining with both players holding serve and playing some outstanding tennis it wasn’t until a superbly placed lob shot followed by a crafty cross court forehand allowed Patrick to break his opponents serve and hold on for a 6-4 win. In the singles 2, Sean came up against a big serving left hander who proved to be a quite difficult match up. After dropping his first service game, Sean immediately broke back to level at 1-1. Despite playing some great tennis and at times seeming in control of the match, Sean lost 6-4 meaning our singles 3 and 4 needed to win to secure victory.
After devouring what Jiah said was “the biggest and best chicken schnitzel burger ever” he hit the court running and quickly hit the lead in his match. His ability to mix up his game and shot selection proved to be too much for his opponent with Jiah taking out the match 6-1. Meanwhile on court 3, Christian was battling magnificently in his match. Despite hurting his hand and needing treatment, Christian continued to hit winner after winner and took the match out 6-1 giving St John’s the boys main draw championship.
Well done boys on a great result on what was a very entertaining day of tennis. A special thanks to the parents who attended and supported the team.
Open Boys and Girls Futsal
On Friday 15 March, the Boys and Girls Open Futsal teams went to the Illawarra Sports Stadium. The Girls team were drawn in pool 2, playing Illawarra Christian school, Erindale High, Dapto High and Lake Ginninderra (Canberra). The girls started the day on a good note in the first game of the day against Lake Ginninderra B team winning 5-2. In round two the girls put in another solid performance winning 5-0 against Illawarra Christian School.
The boys then stepped in to start their day playing the reigning champions and came up against a very good WHSPA team, within a few minutes were 2-0 down. They boys then rallied themselves admirably to finish 3-0. Smiths Hill High were the next obstacle and in a tight game we prevailed to take the 3 points. The boys now needed only a point from their final pool game to make the finals, but a determined performance from Keira High saw the boys miss out on a quarter final place by a goal difference of one.
The girls competition resumed with a 0-0 draw with Erindale, the the final pool game against Dapto High finishing 5-0 to take them unbeaten into the Quarter finals. That is where they versed a very sharp Lake Ginninderra A team, unfortunately losing 3-0. Both opens teams played some excellent futsal and were great ambassadors for the school representative sport program. A number of students from Years 9 and 10 impressing to make the team.
Girls Team: Skyla Kowe, Jasmine Tan, Taniesha Angelkovski, Jessie Abbott, Zali Everingham, Casey Johnson, Tara Bailey and Zoe Anderson.
Boys Team: Liam Coulson-Knight, Rocky Lavalle, Campbell Richardson-Thornton, Riley Jarrett, Lachlan Bryce, Alexander Priest, Aidan Moroney, Lawson Moore, Sebastian Young and Lucas Johnson.
Under 13’s Boys Touch Football
With two wins, one draw and four loses throughout the day we finished in 6th position overall. It proved to be a day where fitness and decision making skills were tested and it was pleasing to see these areas improve dramatically throughout the competition. Whilst all players contributed to the team’s success, the following contributions should be acknowledged: Macklin Berry for his creative play in the link which led to many of our tries been scored, Cooper Barrett for his fitness and ability to play all positions, Campbell Bramley for his communication and organisation in defense and Lachlan Heywood for his speed and try scoring ability. It was a pleasure coaching this group of boys and I look forward to watching their touch football skills develop as they progress through their time here at St John’s.

The New NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy
Food and Drink Benchmark
Term 1 2019 there will be a few changes to the canteen menu, to comply with the new NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy, which replaces the old Traffic Light criteria of food and drinks that can be sold in school canteens. This means three quarters of the menu is everyday food from the five food groups and one quarter of the menu is occasional foods with a 3.5 or higher food star rating. Some food items high in sugar, salt and/or saturated fats that do not reach a 3.5 food star rating will be removed from the menu, eg. iced tea, Ovaltinis, cough lollies, JJ's Jumpies and some ice creams, so not too many changes. The canteen staff are working hard sourcing new and nutritious snacks and ice creams to add to the menu, eg. dip & nibbles packs, cheese dip & biscuits, fruit pikelets & scones, house made pasta dishes & salads, frozen juice cups and coconut juice ice blocks. There will be lots of new items to choose from. If you have any questions, ideas or a few hours spare to volunteer in the canteen, please contact the Canteen Manager on 4423 1359.
The school offers the convenience of online lunch orders for all students. If you wish to order online please click on the school lunch online image on the website to register.
Close off for orders is 8.30am daily, a 25c transaction fee applies. If there are any discrepancies with your order, please contact 1300 787 939.

Volunteers please note: Sign in at the School Office on the computerised system before you commence your shift. Please wear enclosed shoes, long hair tied back, no excessive jewellery (i.e. rings, bracelets).
